Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has become an established tool to investigate brain function and is, due to its portability and resistance to electromagnetic noise, an interesting modality for brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). BMIs have been successfully realized using the decoding of movement kinematics from intra-cortical recordings in monkey and human. Recently, it has been shown that hemodynamic brain responses as measured by fMRI are modulated by the direction of hand movements. However, quantitative data on the decoding of movement direction from hemodynamic responses is still lacking and it remains unclear whether this can be achieved with fNIRS, which records signals at a lower spatial resolution but with the advantage of being portable. Here, we recorded brain activity with fNIRS above different cortical areas while subjects performed hand movements in two different directions. We found that hemodynamic signals in contralateral sensorimotor areas vary with the direction of movements, though only weakly. Using these signals, movement direction could be inferred on a single-trial basis with an accuracy of ∼65% on average across subjects. The temporal evolution of decoding accuracy resembled that of typical hemodynamic responses observed in motor experiments. Simultaneous recordings with a head tracking system showed that head movements, at least up to some extent, do not influence the decoding of fNIRS signals. Due to the low accuracy, fNIRS is not a viable alternative for BMIs utilizing decoding of movement direction. However, due to its relative resistance to head movements, it is promising for studies investigating brain activity during motor experiments.  相似文献

The well known circulatory, including hemopoetic, and respiratory adjustments to high altitude often serve as classic examples of adaptation to specific environmental conditions. Less extensively studied are the contributions of the nervous and endocrine systems to such adaptive mechanisms even though their involvement in humans and animals is indisputed. Observations from our and other laboratories have identified in the rat a number of neurologic and endocrine responses to acute and prolonged exposure to high altitude attributable primarily to its hypoxic component. These responses include general retardation in maturation and function of the central nervous system as manifested by alterations in spontaneous and evoked electrical activity particularly in the limbic structures and involving selectively the synapse and are associated with impairment of brain protein and lipid metabolism, myelinogenesis and neurotransmission. Together with these neurologic disturbances, endocrine dysfunctions lead to alterations in growth, fertility and metabolism. Thus hypoxia, even of moderate severity, would affect profoundly the biochemical and functional maturation and activity of the brain and endocrines, and, reciprocally, prevention and treatment of these neuroendocrine imbalances might strengthen the adaptive competence of the individual.

Afferent signals from the otolith organs can produce compensatory eye position and velocity signals which has been described as linear vestibulo-ocular reflex (LVOR). The afferent otolith signals carry information about head orientation and changes of head orientation relative to gravity. A head orientation (tilt) related position signal can be obtained from population vector coding of tonic otolith afferent signals during static or dynamic head tilts, which in turn could produce compensatory eye position signals in the LVOR. On the other hand, eye angular velocity signals may be extracted, as proposed in this study, from the population response of tilt-velocity sensitive otolith afferents. Such afferents are shown to encode instantaneous head orientation relative to gravity at onset of a head movement and, as the movement continues, the projection of head angular velocity onto the earth-horizontal plane, indicating the instantaneous direction of movement relative to gravity. Angular velocity components along the earth-vertical direction which are not directly encoded by otolith afferents can be detected by central signal processing. Central reconstruction of 3D head angular velocity allows to obtain information about absolute head orientation in space even in the absence of semicircular canal related information. Such information is important for generating compensatory eye movements as well as for dynamic control of posture.  相似文献

It is known that proprioceptive signals modify the spatial organization of the postural reflexes, thus leading to body stability. The neurophysiological basis of this phenomenon are at present unknown. The present report documents that, in decerebrate cat, body-to-head rotation in the horizontal plane modified the preferred response direction to labyrinthine stimulation of the forelimb extensor triceps brachii. Such direction resulted always perpendicular to the longitudinal body axis of the animal, whatever its relative position with respect to the head could be. The rotation of the preferred response direction of the triceps was greatly reduced by functional inactivation of the ipsilateral cerebellar vermis. On the other hand, following body-to-head displacement, the preferred response directions of the corresponding P-cells tended, on the average, to rotate in the same direction and by the same angle as the body. We propose that the neck input finely tunes parallel vestibular channels, endowed with different spatial and temporal properties, impinging upon P-cells, thus modifying their responses to animal tilt and, as a consequence, the spatial properties of VS reflexes. It is possible that, by a similar mechanism, the cerebellum may contribute to the changes in reference frame occurring in sensorimotor transformations of reflex and voluntary nature.  相似文献

For prey animals to negotiate successfully the fundamental trade-off between predation and starvation, a realistic assessment of predation risk is vital. Prey responses to conspicuous indicators of risk (such as looming predators or fleeing conspecifics) are well documented, but there should also be strong selection for the detection of more subtle cues. A predator's head orientation and eye-gaze direction are good candidates for subtle but useful indicators of risk, since many predators orient their head and eyes towards their prey as they attack. We describe the first explicit demonstration of a bird responding to a live predator's eye-gaze direction. We present wild-caught European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) with human 'predators' whose frontal appearance and gaze direction are manipulated independently, and show that starlings are sensitive to the predator's orientation, the presence of eyes and the direction of eye-gaze. Starlings respond in a functionally significant manner: when the predator's gaze was averted, starlings resumed feeding earlier, at a higher rate and consumed more food overall. By correctly assessing lower risk and returning to feeding activity earlier (as in this study), the animal gains a competitive advantage over conspecifics that do not respond to the subtle predator cue in this way.  相似文献

Behavioral responses of an animal vary even when they are elicited by the same stimulus. This variability is due to stochastic processes within the nervous system and to the changing internal states of the animal. To what extent does the variability of neuronal responses account for the overall variability at the behavioral level? To address this question we evaluate the neuronal variability at the output stage of the blowfly''s (Calliphora vicina) visual system by recording from motion-sensitive interneurons mediating head optomotor responses. By means of a simple modelling approach representing the sensory-motor transformation, we predict head movements on the basis of the recorded responses of motion-sensitive neurons and compare the variability of the predicted head movements with that of the observed ones. Large gain changes of optomotor head movements have previously been shown to go along with changes in the animals'' activity state. Our modelling approach substantiates that these gain changes are imposed downstream of the motion-sensitive neurons of the visual system. Moreover, since predicted head movements are clearly more reliable than those actually observed, we conclude that substantial variability is introduced downstream of the visual system.  相似文献

The shaping of the vertebrate head results from highly dynamic integrated processes involving the growth and exchange of signals between the ectoderm, the endoderm, the mesoderm and Cephalic Neural Crest Cells (CNCCs). During embryonic development, these tissues change their shape and relative position rapidly and come transiently in contact with each other. Molecular signals exchanged in restricted regions of tissue interaction are crucial in providing positional identity to the mesenchymes which will form the different skeletal and muscular components of the head. Slight spatio-temporal modifications of these signalling maps can result in profound changes in craniofacial development and might have contributed to the evolution of facial diversity. Abnormal signalling patterns could also be at the origin of congenital craniofacial malformations. This review brings into perspective recent work on spatial and temporal aspects of facial morphogenesis with particular focus on the molecular mechanisms of jaw specification.  相似文献

Hatchling Xenopus laevis embryos usually swim when the skin is touched with a fine hair. Less common are small, local V-flexions and more general C-flexions. Simple flexions or the initial flexion at the start of swimming occur predominantly on the opposite side to the stimulus to direct the animal away from the stimulus. Strokes to the midline lead to random sidedness of responses.
The reliability of the sidedness of flexions and the first flexions of swimming decreases the more rostrally the stimuli are given. The range of directions of swimming paths are larger with more rostral stimuli so responses to head stimuli are unpredictable in direction.
In animals immobilized in α-bungarotoxin, strokes to the skin produce electrically recorded motor output which corresponds to: V-flexions, C-flexions and swimming. Fictive activity generally starts on the side opposite to the stimulus. The fictive responses suggest that the three basic behaviour patterns observed can be generated entirely within the central nervous system without any sensory feedback.
We discuss possible mechanisms for the generation of 'protean' responses to head stimulation which are unpredictable in direction.  相似文献

Induction of the otic placode, the rudiment of the inner ear, is believed to depend on signals derived from surrounding tissues, the head mesoderm and the prospective hindbrain. Here we report the first attempt to define the specific contribution of the neuroectoderm to this inductive process in Xenopus. To this end we tested the ability of segments of the neural plate (NP), isolated from different axial levels, to induce the otic marker Pax8 when recombined with blastula stage animal caps. We found that one single domain of the NP, corresponding to the prospective anterior hindbrain, had Pax8-inducing activity in this assay. Surprisingly, more than half of these recombinants formed otic vesicle-like structures. Lineage tracing experiments indicate that these vesicle-like structures are entirely derived from the animal cap and express several pan-otic markers. Pax8 activation in these recombinants requires active Fgf and canonical Wnt signaling, as interference with either pathway blocks Pax8 induction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Fgf and canonical Wnt signaling cooperate to activate Pax8 expression in isolated animal caps. We propose that in the absence of mesoderm cues the combined activity of hindbrain-derived Wnt and Fgf signals specifies the otic placode in Xenopus, and promotes its morphogenesis into an otocyst.  相似文献

Insect head shapes are remarkably variable, but the influences of these changes on biomechanical performance are unclear. Among ‘basal’ winged insects, such as dragonflies, mayflies, earwigs and stoneflies, some of the most prominent anatomical changes are the general mouthpart orientation, eye size and the connection of the endoskeleton to the head. Here, we assess these variations as well as differing ridge and sclerite configurations using modern engineering methods including multibody dynamics modelling and finite element analysis in order to quantify and compare the influence of anatomical changes on strain in particular head regions and the whole head. We show that a range of peculiar structures such as the genal/subgenal, epistomal and circumocular areas are consistently highly loaded in all species, despite drastically differing morphologies in species with forward‐projecting (prognathous) and downward‐projecting (orthognathous) mouthparts. Sensitivity analyses show that the presence of eyes has a negligible influence on head capsule strain if a circumocular ridge is present. In contrast, the connection of the dorsal endoskeletal arms to the head capsule especially affects overall head loading in species with downward‐projecting mouthparts. Analysis of the relative strains between species for each head region reveals that concerted changes in head substructures such as the subgenal area, the endoskeleton and the epistomal area lead to a consistent relative loading for the whole head capsule and vulnerable structures such as the eyes. It appears that biting‐chewing loads are managed by a system of strengthening ridges on the head capsule irrespective of the general mouthpart and head orientation. Concerted changes in ridge and endoskeleton configuration might allow for more radical anatomical changes such as the general mouthpart orientation, which could be an explanation for the variability of this trait among insects. In an evolutionary context, many‐to‐one mapping of strain patterns onto a relatively similar overall head loading indeed could have fostered the dynamic diversification processes seen in insects.  相似文献

Voluntary physical activity and exercise training can favorably influence brain plasticity by facilitating neurogenerative, neuroadaptive, and neuroprotective processes. At least some of the processes are mediated by neurotrophic factors. Motor skill training and regular exercise enhance executive functions of cognition and some types of learning, including motor learning in the spinal cord. These adaptations in the central nervous system have implications for the prevention and treatment of obesity, cancer, depression, the decline in cognition associated with aging, and neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's dementia, ischemic stroke, and head and spinal cord injury. Chronic voluntary physical activity also attenuates neural responses to stress in brain circuits responsible for regulating peripheral sympathetic activity, suggesting constraint on sympathetic responses to stress that could plausibly contribute to reductions in clinical disorders such as hypertension, heart failure, oxidative stress, and suppression of immunity. Mechanisms explaining these adaptations are not as yet known, but metabolic and neurochemical pathways among skeletal muscle, the spinal cord, and the brain offer plausible, testable mechanisms that might help explain effects of physical activity and exercise on the central nervous system.  相似文献

Previous studies in humans showed that genioglossal muscle activity is higher when individuals are supine than when they are upright, and prior experiments in anesthetized or decerebrate animals suggested that vestibular inputs might participate in triggering these alterations in muscle firing. The present study determined the effects of whole body tilts in the pitch (nose-up) plane on genioglossal activity in a conscious feline model and compared these responses with those generated by roll (ear-down) tilts. We also ascertained the effects of a bilateral vestibular neurectomy on the alterations in genioglossal activity elicited by changes in body position. Both pitch and roll body tilts produced modifications in muscle firing that were dependent on the amplitude of the rotation; however, the relative effects of ear-down and nose-up tilts on genioglossal activity were variable from animal to animal. The response variability observed might reflect the fact that genioglossus has a complex organization and participates in a variety of tongue movements; in each animal, electromyographic recordings presumably sampled the firing of different proportions of fibers in the various compartments and subcompartments of the muscle. Furthermore, removal of labyrinthine inputs resulted in alterations in genioglossal responses to postural changes that persisted until recordings were discontinued approximately 1 mo later, demonstrating that the vestibular system participates in regulating the muscle's activity. Peripheral vestibular lesions were subsequently demonstrated to be complete through the postmortem inspection of temporal bone sections or by observing that vestibular nucleus neurons did not respond to rotations in vertical planes.  相似文献

Motivated by experimental observations of the head direction system, we study a three population network model that operates as a continuous attractor network. This network is able to store in a short-term memory an angular variable (the head direction) as a spatial profile of activity across neurons in the absence of selective external inputs, and to accurately update this variable on the basis of angular velocity inputs. The network is composed of one excitatory population and two inhibitory populations, with inter-connections between populations but no connections within the neurons of a same population. In particular, there are no excitatory-to-excitatory connections. Angular velocity signals are represented as inputs in one inhibitory population (clockwise turns) or the other (counterclockwise turns). The system is studied using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. Analysis of a simplified model composed of threshold-linear neurons gives the conditions on the connectivity for (i) the emergence of the spatially selective profile, (ii) reliable integration of angular velocity inputs, and (iii) the range of angular velocities that can be accurately integrated by the model. Numerical simulations allow us to study the proposed scenario in a large network of spiking neurons and compare their dynamics with that of head direction cells recorded in the rat limbic system. In particular, we show that the directional representation encoded by the attractor network can be rapidly updated by external cues, consistent with the very short update latencies observed experimentally by Zugaro et al. (2003) in thalamic head direction cells.  相似文献

Echinoderm early developmental stages might supply a good tool for toxicity testing in different fields, ranging from environment to food contamination, and in full respect of the 3Rs objectives (reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal experiments) that will eventually lead to the replacement of high vertebrate animal testing in toxicology. Sea urchin is one of the few organismic models considered by the European Agency for Alternative models. Actually, sea urchin embryonic development has been studied for over a century, and the complex nets of intercellular communications leading to the different events are well known, as well the possibility for environmental molecules and their residuals to interfere with such communications, causing developmental anomalies. In particular, the main goal of toxicologists since several years has been to establish a correlation between the cell-to-cell communications occurring during different developmental events and the signals occurring during neurogenesis, with the aim to pursue a mechanistic understanding of these processes and their deviations caused by stressors from different sources.  相似文献

The role of consciousness in learning has been debated for nearly 50 years. Recent studies suggest that conscious awareness is needed to bridge the gap when learning about two events that are separated in time, as is true for trace fear conditioning. This has been repeatedly shown and seems to apply to other forms of classical conditioning as well. In contrast to these findings, we show that individuals can learn to associate a face with the later occurrence of a shock, even if they are unable to perceive the face. We used a novel application of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to non-invasively record neural activity from the amygdala, which is known to be important for fear learning. We demonstrate rapid (∼170–200 ms) amygdala responses during the stimulus free period between the face and the shock. These results suggest that unperceived faces can serve as signals for impending threat, and that rapid, automatic activation of the amygdala contributes to this process. In addition, we describe a methodology that can be applied in the future to study neural activity with MEG in other subcortical structures.  相似文献
