Non-indigenous species may be the most severe environmental threat the world now faces. Fishes, in particular, have been intentionally introduced worldwide and have commonly caused the local extinction of native fish. Despite their importance, the impact of introduced fishes on threatened populations of Pacific salmon has never been systemically examined. Here, we take advantage of several unique datasets from the Columbia River Basin to address the impact of non-indigenous brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, on threatened spring/summer-run chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. More than 41 000 juvenile chinook were individually marked, and their survival in streams without brook trout was nearly double the survival in streams with brook trout. Furthermore, when brook trout were absent, habitat quality was positively associated with chinook survival, but when brook trout were present no relationship between chinook survival and habitat quality was evident. The difference in juvenile chinook survival between sites with, and without, brook trout would increase population growth rate (lambda) by ca. 2.5%. This increase in lambda would be sufficient to reverse the negative population growth observed in many chinook populations. Because many of the populations we investigated occur in wilderness areas, their habitat has been considered pristine; however, our results emphasize that non-indigenous species are present and may have a dramatic impact, even in remote regions that otherwise appear pristine.  相似文献

Summary In order to describe precisely the fixed action patterns of salmon sexual behavior, we recorded the electromyographic (EMG) activities of trunk and jaw muscles from freely behaving male and female Himé salmon (landlocked sockeye salmon,Oncorhynchus nerka). A series of action patterns (quivering and spawning act in males, digging, covering, prespawning act and spawning act in females, and the swimming and turning movements in both sexes) were characterized by rhythmic activities of the trunk muscles. Each of these activity patterns is quantitatively distinct from the others in such parameters as frequency, bout duration, duty value, intersegmental phase delay, and spatial distribution of rhythmic activities. However, all of these rhythms share a qualitatively homologous pattern with the forward swimming movement: rhythmic activities alternate on both sides of the body (bilateral coupling) and are posteriorly propagated (intersegmental coupling). In addition, a 31 intersegmental phase coupling occurs in the most anterior trunk muscles during the spawning act in some males. Based on these observations, we discussed the biomechanics for these motor patterns (oviposition, ejaculation, body vibration, and mouth opening), and the neural mechanisms for the pattern generation. A possibility was pointed out that the locomotor pattern generator in the spinal cord may be modulated by descending supraspinal signals and recruited to generate such diverse forms of action patterns in sexual behavior.Abbreviations CPG central pattern generator - EMG electromyography - AC adductor mandibulae (cephalic portion) - AM adductor mandibulae (mandibular portion) - DO dilator operculi - GH geniohyoideus - LAP levator arcus palatitni - LPe musculus lateralis profundus (epaxial portion) - LPh musculus lateralis profundus (hypaxial portion) - LS musculus lateralis superficialis - PD protractor dorsalis - PI protractor ischii - RD retractor dorsalis - RI retractor ischii  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization may occur in situations of recent contact between a colonizer and a resident species, being more intense in the colonization front. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout S. trutta have been sympatric species since their origin and they share spatial and temporal spawning niches, exhibiting low levels of bidirectional interspecific hybridization and introgression throughout their distribution range. Different causes have been identified for increased hybridization, from escapes or deliberate releases of domesticated fish to sneaking male behavior. We have examined hybridization rates and direction in different situations of advance of one of these species into a territory formerly inhabited by the other (247 samples were analyzed in northern Spain and 487 in Kerguelen Islands). In all cases, hybrids found in the colonization front were offspring of colonizer females and resident males. We hypothesize that these findings are the result of adaptive relaxed mate choice of colonizing females, regardless of the relative abundance of each species.  相似文献

Characteristic vibrational signals are suggested to be exchanged between the sexes during the spawning behavior in the himé salmon (landlocked red salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka). To check whether the lateral line is used to detect and process these vibrational signals, we examined how Co2+, which is known to block the mechano-electrical transduction in the lateral line detector, affects both the spawning behavior and lateral line response of the male himé salmon. The results showed that Co2+ blocked both the spawning behavior towards the vibrating model (Fig. 2) and the lateral line response to the vibrational stimuli (Figs. 5, 6), if the fish were forced to swim in the water containing 1.0 mM Co2+ for 1 to 1.5 h or longer in the presence of 0.25 mM Ca2+. 0.1 mM Co2+ had similar but weaker effects. These results indicate that the vibrational signals from the vibrating model are detected and processed by the lateral line system to elicit the spawning behavior. These are the first experimental evidences that the lateral line sense is involved in the communicational behavior of the fish.  相似文献

The risk of infanticide may alter foraging decisions made by females, which otherwise would have been based on nutritional requirements and forage quality and availability. In systems where meat resources are spatially aggregated in late summer and fall, female brown bears ( Ursus arctos) would be faced with a trade-off situation. The need of reproductive females to accumulate adequate fat stores would likely result in a decision to frequent salmon streams and consume the protein- and lipid-rich spawning salmon. In contrast, aggregations of bears along salmon streams would create conditions of high risk of infanticide. We investigated consumption of salmon by brown bears on Admiralty and Chichagof Islands in Southeast Alaska from 1982 to 2000 using stable isotope analysis and radiotelemetry. While nearly all males (22 of 23) consumed relatively large amounts of salmon (i.e., >10% relative contribution to seasonal diet), not all females ( n =56) did so. Five of 26 females for which we had reproductive data, occupied home ranges that had no access to salmon and thus did not consume salmon when they were mated or accompanied by young. Of females that had access to salmon streams ( n =21), all mated individuals ( n =16) had 15N values indicative of salmon consumption. In contrast, 4 out of 16 females with cubs avoided consuming salmon altogether, and of the other 12, 3 consumed less salmon than they did when they were mated. For 11 of 21 females with access to salmon streams we had data encompassing both reproductive states. Five of those altered foraging strategies and exhibited significantly lower values of 15N when accompanied by young than when mated, while 6 did not. Radiotelemetry data indicated that females with spring cubs were found, on average, further away from streams during the spawning season compared with females with no young, but both did not differ from males and females with yearlings and 2-year-olds. Females with young that avoided salmon streams were significantly lighter indicating that female choice to avoid consumption of salmon carries a cost that may translate to lower female or cub survivorship. The role of the social hierarchy of males and females, mating history, and paternity in affecting the risk of infanticide and foraging decisions of female brown bears merit further investigation.  相似文献

Antiserum raised against the β-subunit of wheat (Triticum aestivum) chloroplast ATPase cross-reacts with a 51000 protein located in the membrane fraction of Escherichia coli. The differential solubility of this polypeptide after chloroform treatment of unc+ and uncD409 strains indicates that this cross-reacting polypeptide is the bacterial β-subunit of ATPase. Thus a high degree of conservation of antigenic determinant sites exists between a bacterial β-subunit and the β-subunit of a monocot. This conservation also seems to extend to the β-subunit of mitochondrial ATPase of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).  相似文献

Himé salmon (landlocked red salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka) have an elaborate communication system, which ensures synchronous spawning by both sexes and successful fertilization. Both the vibrational and visual signals have been suggested to be involved in this communication system. To characterize these signals, vibrating or stationary three-dimensional models of various types were presented to the male, and male behavior elicited was examined. The results showed that the vibrating model mimicking certain aspects of the female behavior (prespawning act) elicits the spawning in the male (Figs. 2, 3, 5). Furthermore, it was found that (1) the presence of both the vibrational and visual cues (Figs. 6, 7), and (2) spatial coincidence of these two cues (Fig. 8) are necessary for eliciting this behavior. Based on these results it was supposed that the vibrational and visual informations converge at the central nervous system where they are integrated to elicit the spawning.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon are typically anadromous, spending the majority of their lifetime in oceans and returning to fresh water to breed. This diversity of environments likely results in strong selective forces shaping their genome. In this paper, we present the first genomics approach to detect positive selection operating on the Salmo salar (salmon) lineage, an important aquaculture species. We identify a panel of candidate genes that may have been subject to adaptive evolution in this species. In particular, we identify a robust signature of positive selection operating on the salmon CD3γδ gene, which encodes one of the protein chains essential for formation of the T-cell receptor complex and for T-cell activation. Furthermore, we identified the particular codon sites that have been subject to positive selection in fish and highlight two sites flanking an important N-glycosylation site in this molecule. Lake Wyara receives most of its water from Werewilka Creek, with the area between the two forming Werewilka Inlet which is highly variable in area, and salinity and has high habitat heterogeneity. Over 12 years, 84 species of macroinvertebrate were found in the inlet, but only 34 in the lake. Halobiont and halophilic species were the same in each, but there were many fewer salt-tolerant species in the lake and no freshwater species. The latter were excluded by salinity, but habitat homogeneity due to strong wave action in the lake seems to limit many salt-tolerant species to the inlet. Species richness in large saline lakes in inland Australia is limited by salinity, poor speciation opportunities engendered by their episodic nature, and habitat homogeneity.  相似文献

Although still in relatively good condition, the Gala´pagos Archipelago suffers from increasing human pressures. Apart from direct actions like hunting and logging, endemic plants and animals are threatened by introduced species, and in many cases the present status of the populations is not known. The conservation status of eight plant species considered endangered was studied from literature and field surveys and the main threats were determined. Each of the eight species is endemic to only one island but in some cases is also present on nearby islets. Of these eight species, one is considered extinct, one critically endangered, and the others suffer various levels of threat. As in all island systems of the world, the main threats are introduced organisms, both plants and animals. The extinct species probably disappeared owing to invasion by Lantana camara, one of the most aggressively invasive plants of the islands, and the most endangered species is threatened by goats. The remaining species seem to be regenerating well and we can expect positive results from protection efforts. Today, only one of the eight species benefits from a direct protection action.  相似文献

Sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol and lactitol were used as the acceptors of galactosyl radicals, in the process of transgalactosylation accompanying the hydrolysis of lactose, conducted with -galactosidase (4.0 ml Lactozym 3000 was added to 430 ml 1.45 M lactose with 0.95 M polyhydroxyalcohols). The following concentrations of galactosyl derivatives of polyols were obtained after hydrolysis for 4 h at 40°C: 0.31 M Gal-erythritol, 0.22 M Gal-xylitol, 0.18 M Gal-sorbitol and 0.14 M Gal-lactitol. A quadruple increase of xylitol content in dry matter of a solution (from 11.5% (w/w) to 44.5% (w/w) brought about a 2.3-fold increase of the product content in the solution (15.2% (w/w) of dry matter).  相似文献

In vertebrates, CD3 complex and CD4 and CD8 co-receptors are essential for signal transduction during T cell activation. In the present study, we report the mRNA spliced variants of the Atlantic salmon CD3ε, CD4 and CD8β and the effect of pathogen encounter on the expression of these variants. CD3ε is alternatively spliced in thymus, head kidney, spleen and gills to give rise to the complete mRNA sequence and to an alternative product that lacks the transmembrane exon. CD4 is also alternatively spliced in the thymus, head kidney, spleen and gills to form two variants, although the alternative product is barely detectable. The alternative product lacks the exon 1B encoding the D1 domain, which is essential for binding to MHC class II proteins. Two amplicons were also found for the CD8β gene; sequencing analysis revealed that the main PCR product corresponds to the previously reported CD8β sequence, whereas the variant sequence encodes a potential protein that lacks the Ig-like domain. The expression of CD3, CD4, CD8β genes also analyzed in head kidney of LPS-treated and IPNV infected salmon and different patterns of expression were observed. The presence and balance of the different variants of T cell co-receptors could be related to the ability of fish to induce a particular type of immune response, as well as, the ability of the pathogen to modify the fish immune response.  相似文献

The theoretical framework for the field of cancer research is based on two main principles. The first is that cancer advances in a stepwise manner, with each alteration driving cells further toward a malignant state. Second, to cure cancer we must target only cancer-specific properties. Here, we analyze the birth and propagation of the cancer research paradigm. We believe the current paradigm is immersed in crisis and that the field would benefit from integrating theories within and outside the normal modes of research to compile a new framework, with the hope of faster progress and significantly fewer cancer-related deaths.  相似文献

The timing of river entry in the Atlantic salmon is known to depend on genetic, demographic and environmental factors, but little is known about the relative magnitude of among population and among year variation and covariation in this respect in natural state Atlantic salmon rives. To investigate this, variability in the timing of river entry in three historical Finnish Atlantic salmon populations were analyzed using salmon trap data collected during 1870- 1902. The analyses reveled that 1 ) the timing of river entry differed substantially and consistently among the rivers, and that 2) variation among the rivers was much larger than variation among years. Annual variations were not explained by regional environmental conditions, whereas in one river the timing of the local flood peak was a significant predictor of the timing of river entry. Differences in the timing of salmon entry to geographically closely situated rivers suggests that a regionally fixed opening date for coastal fisheries might not be the best management strategy as it may lead to uneven exploitation of salmon populations from different rivers [ Current Zoology 55 (5) : 342 - 349, 2009] .  相似文献

The male of Brumptomyia angelae, sp. nov., a new species of Phlebotominae (Diptera, Psychodidae) of the Atlantic forest of the state of Paraná, Brazil, is described and illustrated. This new taxon is closely related to Brumptomyia ortizi Martins, Silva & Falc?o 1971, Brumptomyia nitzulescui (Costa Lima, 1932), and Brumptomyia troglodytes (Lutz, 1922). The male genitalia of these three latter species have also been drawn.  相似文献
