Capture-recapture data on the fish of La Cuarentena Lagoon (Carabajal Island) 31° 42 15 S – 60° 37 30 W are given. Prochilodus platensis Holmberg (sábalo') represented 90% of the 1287 fish tagged. By means of the Schumacher & Eschemeyer formula (1943), it was estimated that 6681 (6657–6706) individuals were present. Total biomass of the species was calculated at 87094 kg, representing 66.18 kg ha–1. Results are compared with data from different water bodies of the Paraná River.  相似文献

A simple method for characterizing temperature-sensitive DNA synthesis mutants is described. The method uses density transfer and transformation techniques and is based on expected theoretical behavior of the chromosome population. A direct proof of inhibition of initiation of DNA replication is provided. The mutant dna-1, showing quick inhibition of initiation, is further characterized and mapped. An independent method for mapping genetic markers close to the origin, based on their transfer behavior after inhibition of initiation, is presented.  相似文献

Abstract. The population dynamics of two monocarpic bamboos, Sasa kurilensis and S. tsuboiana, were studied for more than 10 years after establishment following mass flowering. Both species show vigorous rhizomatous vegetative reproduction after growing up to maturity, but horizontal expansion in the seedling stage was much more vigorous in S. tsuboiana than in S. kurilensis. The pattern of changes in culm density in the two species was strikingly similar: culm densities of both species increased until they reached full-density states, after which they decreased in accordance with seedling growth. However, the mode of regulation in culm density was different. S. kurilensis seedlings were composed of only a few culms and scarcely extended their rhizomes during the observation period. Such poor lateral expansion resulted in asymmetric competition as observed in many non-clonal plants, and consequently their culm density decreased as a result of the mortality of genets due to self-thinning. In S. tsuboiana seedlings, the number of culms per genet increased considerably by frequent tillering and sprouting from rhizomes. However, after reaching full density state, the Bud Utility Ratio (BUR), (the proportion of the rhizome nodes with culms to the total number of rhizome nodes), decreased drastically. In this manner, S. tsuboiana regulated culm density intraclonally as is observed in the stable states of many clonal plants. Hence it is important for the understanding of the regeneration process in clonal species to clarify when and how their seedlings extend rhizomes during their growth.  相似文献

Questing adult blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say) abundance declined markedly three years after the 1999 removal of white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann) from Monhegan Island, ME. Since 2000, subadult ticks have not been found on Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout); questing nymphs have not been found since 2002. This suggested I. scapularis was reintroduced annually via bird importation of subadult ticks, but unable to complete its two‐year life cycle on the island due to lack of deer. To investigate this, we used uncertainty analysis to estimate 1) questing adult ticks/ha that would result from avian importation of nymphs, and 2) questing adult ticks/ha on Monhegan Island, using bird capture and tick burden data from Appledore Island, ME, flagged tick data from Monhegan Island, and ten uncertain parameters. During the deer‐fed period (1990–2001), estimated tick density on Monhegan Island was 18 times greater than that of imported ticks. During the post‐deer‐fed period (2002–2008), Monhegan Island tick density was equivalent to imported tick density. This supported the premise that all I. scapularis ticks on Monhegan Island have been bird‐derived since 2002.  相似文献

The jaguar (Panthera onca) plays an important role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological processes. We evaluated the status of a jaguar population in one of the last stronghold habitats for its conservation in the Atlantic Forest, the Rio Doce State Park (RDSP). We used a random survey design from 2016/17 to estimate jaguar abundance and density as well as its occupancy and detection probabilities in the entire Park''s area. To monitor for temporal fluctuations in density and abundance, we used a systematic survey design in the southern portion of the Park where jaguars were more recorded when using the random approach. We then conducted two surveys in 2017/18 and 2020. Our 2016/17 random survey revealed that jaguar density (0.11 ± SE 0.28 individuals/100 km2) was the lowest obtained for the species across the Atlantic Forest. We noticed that jaguar density increased three times from 2017/18 (0.55 ± SE 0.45 individuals/100 km2) to 2020 (1.61 ± SE 0.6 individuals/100 km2). Jaguar occupancy and detection probability were 0.40 and 0.08, respectively. The low jaguar occupancy probability was positively associated with smaller distances from lakes and records of potential prey. The detection probability was positively associated with prey detection, the rainy season, and smaller distances from lakes. Our work contributes to a growing awareness of the potential conservation value of a protected area in a human‐dominated landscape as one of the last strongholds for jaguars across the Atlantic Forest.  相似文献

The hindered rotations of acetone were studied density functional theory (B3LYP) and second order Møller-Plesset approaches using 6-31G** and 6-311G** basis sets. One of the CH3 groups of acetone with fixed heavy atoms was rotated from 0.0 to 120°, and CCH angles were scanned from 90.3 to 130.3° to cover the potential energy surface of interest; a circular valley was obtained with the deepest potential value at a CCH angle equal to 109.3°. Potential energy profiles were then calculated by assuming that the molecular geometry could relax during rotation (i.e., each value of the torsion angle of the molecular geometry was optimized). Next, the two methyl groups were both rotated clockwise, and then one was rotated clockwise and the other counterclockwise. Using the variation method, and utilizing the first 20 harmonic oscillator wave functions, the energy levels, relative transition moment and relative transition intensities of the component of the hindered rotation ν2 (125.16 cm?1) were computed in a one-dimensional Schrodinger equation. The first three energy levels were almost degenerate; the next three were opened up, and the seventh energy level appeared above the level where tunneling can occur.  相似文献

During exponential growth some cells of E. coli undergo senescence mediated by asymmetric segregation of damaged components, particularly protein aggregates. We showed previously that functional cell division asymmetry in E. coli was responsive to the nutritional environment. Short term exposure as well as long term selection in low calorie environments led to greater cell division symmetry and decreased frequency of senescent cells as compared to high calorie environments. We show here that long term selection in low nutrient environment decreased protein aggregation as revealed by fluorescence microscopy and proportion of insoluble proteins. Across selection lines protein aggregation was correlated significantly positively with the RNA content, presumably indicating metabolic rate. This suggests that the effects of caloric restriction on cell division symmetry and aging in E. coli may work via altered protein handling mechanisms. The demonstrable effects of long term selection on protein aggregation suggest that protein aggregation is an evolvable phenomenon rather than being a passive inevitable process. The aggregated proteins progressively disappeared on facing starvation indicating degradation and recycling demonstrating that protein aggregation is a reversible process in E. coli.  相似文献

In light of recent experiments suggesting high-spin (HS) Ni(II) species in the catalytic cycle of [NiFe] hydrogenase, a series of models of the Ni(II) forms Ni-SI(I,II), SI-CO and Ni-R(I,II,III) were examined in their high-spin states via density functional calculations. Because of its importance in the catalytic cycle, the Ni-C form was also included in this study. Unlike the Ni(II) forms in previous studies, in which a low-spin (LS) state was assumed and a square-planar structure found, the optimized geometries of these HS Ni(II) forms resemble those observed in the crystal structures: a distorted tetrahedral to distorted pyramidal coordination for the NiS4. This resemblance is particularly significant because the LS state is 20-30 kcal/mol less stable than the HS state for the geometry of the crystal structure. If these Ni(II) forms in the enzyme are not high spin, a large change in geometry at the active site is required during the catalytic cycle. Furthermore, only the HS state for the CO-inhibited form SI-CO has CO stretching frequencies that match the experimental results. As in the previous work, these new results show that the heterolytic cleavage reaction of dihydrogen (where H2 is cleaved with the metal acting as a hydride acceptor and a cysteine as the proton acceptor) has a lower energy barrier and is more exothermic when the active site is oxidized to Ni(III). The enzyme models described here are supported by a calibrated correlation of the calculated and measured CO stretching frequencies of the forms of the enzyme. The correlation coefficient for the final set of models of the forms of [NiFe] hydrogenase is 0.8.  相似文献

Populational parameters of primates in the remaining southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest have been estimated, but investigations are biased to coastal evergreen sites. In this study density of three primate species was assessed through line-transect surveys in four semi-deciduous forest fragments (240 to 1450 ha) in Fazenda Barreiro Rico, eastern range of central Plateau of São Paulo state, Brazil. A total of 274 km was surveyed from January to October 2000. I estimated densities via DISTANCE software. Two of the largest fragments contained five primate species while two of the smallest ones harboured, respectively, four and two species. Densities of Cebus apella (15.34–47.92 ind./km2), Alouatta guariba (8.32–34.61), and Brachyteles arachnoides (19.92–35.11) were considerable. Differently from C. apella and A. guariba, B. arachnoides presented a density higher than previously estimated for the largest patch. The hypothetical minimum total population of B. arachnoides (601) may be the largest in semi-deciduous sites. This reinforces the value of the area in terms of its relative contribution for conservation of this endangered species. The narrow spatial scale distribution of forest fragments at Barreiro Rico and its proximity to academic institutions make the site suitable for programs of forest connectivity, studies on conservation biology, and wildlife management endeavours.  相似文献

Top-predator (fourth-trophic-level) controlled trophic cascades are thought to be uncommon in terrestrial systems, but actual quantitative tests and comparisons of bottom-up and top-down forces in systems with more than three linear trophic levels are rare. Here, we describe the density patterns of the arthropod community associated with Piper ant-plants in Costa Rican wet forests. Consumers in this community comprise a complex, interacting web of herbivores, predaceous ants, and predators of ants. Although the hollow stems and petioles of the Piper plants provide some protection to resident ants from predation, specialized Dipoena spiders and Phyllobaenus beetles exploit Pheidole ants inhabiting Piper plants. We report abundance patterns of plants, ants and predators in four forests. These patterns of abundance are consistent with predictions of top-down cascades across four trophic levels when the top predators are effective (beetles). We discuss how top-down and bottom-up forces may interact in systems with less effective top predators (spiders).  相似文献

The results of seal counts performed during the summer–autumn period of the years 1999–2001 in Pil'tun Bay from onboard Zodiak motor boats and Mi-8 and Mi-8MTV helicopters have been analyzed. The information is presented on the density of seals in the bay. The heterogeneous distribution pattern of seals in the bay and the presence of intermittent migrations provide favorable conditions for foraging in young animals.  相似文献

The presence of density dependence of clutch size is tested in 57 long-term population studies of 10 passerine bird species. In about half of the studies of tit species Parus spp. density dependence of clutch size was found, while none was found in studies of two flycatcher species Ficedula spp. One hypothesis explaining this difference is that migrants are less able to predict the final competitor density, because new pairs are still settling when the first females start laying eggs. Such unpredictability is only a problem for early laying females. If this explanation is true, the commonly observed negative correlation between clutch size and laying date should be stronger in high-density years. I tested this prediction in three populations of Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca , and compared the results with three populations of Great Tit Parus major . In none of the six populations was there a significant correlation between the strength of the seasonal decline in clutch size and population density. Thus the lack of density dependence of clutch size in Pied Flycatchers was not consistent with the idea that this is caused by the unpredictability of final density at the time of egg-laying of the earliest females in the population. Furthermore, density does not have any adverse effect on reproductive output of Pied Flycatchers, and therefore they do not adjust clutch size to density.  相似文献

The principle of the DARC approach of hierarchical organization is applied to a molecular electron density representation of functional groups, designed to represent some of the large-scale features of biomolecules, especially macromolecules important in biotechnology and bioinformatics. The proposed representation of the hierarchical structure of the interrelations among functional groups and other, chemically identifiable molecular moieties within a molecule, and a weighting scheme assigned to these local molecular components are justified by the internal structures of the actual fuzzy electron density distributions associated with these molecular moieties. These hierarchical relations serve as a basis for the organization of a functional group database, providing a tool for synthesis design and molecular engineering.  相似文献

The density of some species and total density of fishes have been estimated in river channel parts of the Ivankovo Reservoir in 2012–2015. The significant differences in the total abundance of fishes in 2012–2013 and 2014–2015 have been revealed. The increase in the number of tyulka (Clupeonella cultriventris (Nordmann, 1840)) in the Black and Azov seas in 2014–2015 was determined by their periodic fluctuations typical for any species with a short life cycle. Changes in the abundance of bream and silver bream in the reservoir pelagial relate to their vertical redistribution under the effect of environment factors.  相似文献

Abstract

We propose that the angular unfolding of atomic density distributions exposes some main features of liquid structure. Examples are the mass and the angular location of major maxima. Such structural features constitute a useful starting point for the analysis of liquid structure. To demonstrate this we have analyzed a molecular dynamics trajectory of an equimolar water-acetonitrile mixture. A new method to characterize the extrema of density distributions is used for the analysis. Using this method we draw some conclusions about different types of hydrogen bonds, their lifetimes, and their associated transition probabilities. We also draw some conclusions about recurrent molecular pair configurations.  相似文献

Over-expression of recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli triggers a metabolic stress response which causes a sharp decline in both growth and product formation rates post induction. We identified a key down-regulated substrate utilization gene, glycerol kinase (glpK), whose up-regulation could help alleviate this stress response. In a proof of principal study conducted in shake flask cultures, the glpK gene under the “ara” promoter in a pPROLar.A122 vector was co-transformed along with the recombinant interferon-β (rhIFN-β) gene in a pET22b vector into E. coli BL-21(DE3) cells. Co-expression of glpK improved the expression levels of rhIFN-β in glycerol containing medium, while no such gain was observed in medium without glycerol. This study was extended to high cell density fed-batch cultures where exponential feeding of complex substrates was done to increase biomass and hence product titers. For this we first constructed a modified E. coli strain BL-21(glpK +) where the glpK gene was inserted downstream of the ibpA promoter in the host chromosome. There was a significant improvement in growth as well as expression levels of rhIFN-β in this modified strain when the feed medium contained high glycerol. A final product concentration of 4.8 g/l of rhIFN-β was obtained with the modified strain which was 35 % higher than the control.  相似文献

Curdlan gel shrinks even in water caused syneresis. This syneresis is repressed almost completely by the addition of starch to curdlan before heating, but not repressed by the addition of different sugar compounds even of 10% concentration. Estimating population densities of key species is crucial for many conservation programs. Density estimates provide baseline data and enable monitoring of population size. Several different survey methods are available, and the choice of method depends on the species and study aims. Few studies have compared the accuracy and efficiency of different survey methods for large mammals, particularly for primates. Here we compare estimates of density and abundance of Kloss’ gibbons (Hylobates klossii) using two of the most common survey methods: line transect distance sampling and triangulation. Line transect surveys (survey effort: 155.5 km) produced a total of 101 auditory and visual encounters and a density estimate of 5.5 gibbon clusters (groups or subgroups of primate social units)/km2. Triangulation conducted from 12 listening posts during the same period revealed a similar density estimate of 5.0 clusters/km2. Coefficients of variation of cluster density estimates were slightly higher from triangulation (0.24) than from line transects (0.17), resulting in a lack of precision in detecting changes in cluster densities of <66 % for triangulation and <47 % for line transect surveys at the 5 % significance level with a statistical power of 50 %. This case study shows that both methods may provide estimates with similar accuracy but that line transects can result in more precise estimates and allow assessment of other primate species. For a rapid assessment of gibbon density under time and financial constraints, the triangulation method also may be appropriate.  相似文献
