The long necks of gigantic sauropod dinosaurs are commonly assumed to have been used for high browsing to obtain enough food. However, this analysis questions whether such a posture was reasonable from the standpoint of energetics. The energy cost of circulating the blood can be estimated accurately from two physiological axioms that relate metabolic rate, blood flow rate and arterial blood pressure: (i) metabolic rate is proportional to blood flow rate and (ii) cardiac work rate is proportional to the product of blood flow rate and blood pressure. The analysis shows that it would have required the animal to expend approximately half of its energy intake just to circulate the blood, primarily because a vertical neck would have required a high systemic arterial blood pressure. It is therefore energetically more feasible to have used a more or less horizontal neck to enable wide browsing while keeping blood pressure low.  相似文献

Siegwarth, J.D., Smith, C.N. & Redman, P.D. 2010: An alternative sauropod physiology and cardiovascular system that eliminates high blood pressures. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 46–57. The long neck of an adult sauropod has been found structurally unsuitable for high browsing while standing on all four feet. Some juveniles might have used a tripodal stance, but an analysis of the motion of the centre of mass shows a large adult sauropod could not. We propose here that sauropods could have browsed high by sitting, squatting or even kneeling on their hind legs to elevate their heads without a sharp bend at the base of the neck. A large sauropod needs a way to deal with very high blood pressure when high browsing. Arterial pumping is suggested here as a means of avoiding the need for high blood pressure. □Blood pressure, browsing posture, cardiovascular system, form vis‐à‐vis function, neck length, physiology, sauropods, tripodal stance.  相似文献

A very long neck that is apparently suitable for feeding at great heights is a characteristic feature of most sauropod dinosaurs. Yet, it remains controversial whether any sauropods actually raised their necks high. Recently, strong physiological arguments have been put forward against the idea of high-browsing sauropods, because of the very high blood pressure that appears to be inevitable when the head is located several metres above the heart. For the sauropod Euhelopus zdanskyi, however, biomechanical evidence clearly indicates high browsing. Energy expenditure owing to high browsing is compared with energy costs for walking a distance. It is demonstrated for Euhelopus as well as for the much larger Brachiosaurus that despite an increase in the metabolic rate, high browsing was worthwhile for a sauropod if resources were far apart.  相似文献

The herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods were the largest terrestrial animals ever, surpassing the largest herbivorous mammals by an order of magnitude in body mass. Several evolutionary lineages among Sauropoda produced giants with body masses in excess of 50 metric tonnes by conservative estimates. With body mass increase driven by the selective advantages of large body size, animal lineages will increase in body size until they reach the limit determined by the interplay of bauplan, biology, and resource availability. There is no evidence, however, that resource availability and global physicochemical parameters were different enough in the Mesozoic to have led to sauropod gigantism. We review the biology of sauropod dinosaurs in detail and posit that sauropod gigantism was made possible by a specific combination of plesiomorphic characters (phylogenetic heritage) and evolutionary innovations at different levels which triggered a remarkable evolutionary cascade. Of these key innovations, the most important probably was the very long neck, the most conspicuous feature of the sauropod bauplan. Compared to other herbivores, the long neck allowed more efficient food uptake than in other large herbivores by covering a much larger feeding envelope and making food accessible that was out of the reach of other herbivores. Sauropods thus must have been able to take up more energy from their environment than other herbivores. The long neck, in turn, could only evolve because of the small head and the extensive pneumatization of the sauropod axial skeleton, lightening the neck. The small head was possible because food was ingested without mastication. Both mastication and a gastric mill would have limited food uptake rate. Scaling relationships between gastrointestinal tract size and basal metabolic rate (BMR) suggest that sauropods compensated for the lack of particle reduction with long retention times, even at high uptake rates. The extensive pneumatization of the axial skeleton resulted from the evolution of an avian‐style respiratory system, presumably at the base of Saurischia. An avian‐style respiratory system would also have lowered the cost of breathing, reduced specific gravity, and may have been important in removing excess body heat. Another crucial innovation inherited from basal dinosaurs was a high BMR. This is required for fueling the high growth rate necessary for a multi‐tonne animal to survive to reproductive maturity. The retention of the plesiomorphic oviparous mode of reproduction appears to have been critical as well, allowing much faster population recovery than in megaherbivore mammals. Sauropods produced numerous but small offspring each season while land mammals show a negative correlation of reproductive output to body size. This permitted lower population densities in sauropods than in megaherbivore mammals but larger individuals. Our work on sauropod dinosaurs thus informs us about evolutionary limits to body size in other groups of herbivorous terrestrial tetrapods. Ectothermic reptiles are strongly limited by their low BMR, remaining small. Mammals are limited by their extensive mastication and their vivipary, while ornithsichian dinosaurs were only limited by their extensive mastication, having greater average body sizes than mammals.  相似文献

The right ventricles of pig heart were perfused with hypoxic blood and the left ventricles were perfused with normally ventilated arterial blood. Free carnitine and short-chain acylcarnitines in hypoxic ventricles were lower than in perfused controls, and much lower than in non-perfused heart. Acetylcarnitine levels decreased and the branched-chain acylcarnitines and propionylcarnitine were elevated in the hypoxic perfused ventricles. These data indicate that both hypoxia and anaesthesia caused loss of carnitine and short-chain acylcarnitines from the heart and hypoxia also changed the distribution of short-chain acylcarnitines in the heart.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle has long been used in the field of cardiac surgery. Its use has progressed from providing myocardial reinforcement to assisting the heart by actively pumping blood. Early experiments revealed that skeletal muscle assistance could augment pressures and blood flow; however, the results were short-lived due to muscle fatigue. It was later shown that skeletal muscle can be conditioned electrically to be fatigue resistant and therefore may be useful for performing cardiac-type work. Once the details were formed of how to stimulate and manipulate the muscle to assist the heart, several configurations were devised. Cardiomyoplasty and aortomyoplasty refer to wrapping skeletal muscle around the heart or aorta, respectively. These techniques have been applied in humans; however, the effectiveness is controversial. Although most patients improve clinically, the hemodynamic parameters have not shown consistent improvements, and survival data are unknown. Skeletal muscle ventricles offer a promising alternative to both cardiomyoplasty and aortomyoplasty. These are completely separate pumping chambers constructed from skeletal muscle and connected to the circulation in a variety of configurations. Although these have not been tried in humans, the animal data appear quite convincing. The skeletal muscle ventricles have shown the greatest improvements on hemodynamic parameters with great stability over time.  相似文献

Although blood pressure rises markedly after acute sinoaortic denervation, animals with chronic sinoaortic denervation have normal or only slightly elevated mean arterial pressures. The present study was performed to determine whether reflexes from cardiac receptors exert antihypertensive effects and thereby lower blood pressure in animals with chronic sinoaortic denervation. We made multiple measurements of blood pressures in dogs with chronic sinoaortic denervation before and after their hearts were denervated surgically. Mean arterial pressure after cardiac denervation (100.3 +/- 4.2 mm Hg) was not significantly different from the mean pressures recorded before cardiac denervation in these sinoaortic-denervated dogs (104.8 +/- 3.1 mm Hg). Also, mean heart rate after cardiac denervation (107.4 +/- 5.5 beats/min) did not differ significantly from the mean heart rate recorded before cardiac denervation (107.2 +/- 5.9 beats/min). Cardiac denervation did, however, appear to reduce the lability of both blood pressure and heart rate in sinoaortic-denervated dogs. We conclude that cardiac receptors are not responsible for maintaining arterial pressure within essentially normal limits in animals with chronic sinoaortic denervation.  相似文献

An increased hematocrit could enhance peripheral O2 transport during exercise by improving arterial O2 content. Conversely, it could reduce maximal delivery of O2 by limiting cardiac output during exercise or by limiting the distribution of blood flow to peripheral capillaries with high O2 extractions. We studied O2 transport at rest and during graded treadmill exercise in splenectomized tracheostomized dogs at normal hematocrit (38 +/- 3%), and 48 h after transfusion of type-matched donor cells. This procedure increased hematocrit (60 +/- 3%) but also increased blood volume (P less than 0.05). Following transfusion, resting cardiac output (QT) and heart rate were not different. During exercise, QT was significantly lower at each level of O2 consumption (VO2) at high hematocrit (P less than 0.01). A reduction in QT was also seen during polycythemic exercise with hypoxemia produced by breathing 12 or 10% O2 in N2. Despite the reduction in QT, mixed venous PO2 was not lower at high hematocrit, and the increase in base deficit with VO2 was not different from control measurements. O2 delivery (QT X arterial content) was similar at each level of VO2 at both levels of hematocrit, during both normoxic and hypoxic studies. Both systemic and pulmonary arterial pressures were increased at rest after transfusion (P less than 0.05). However, pulmonary and systemic pressures were not higher than control during exercise at high hematocrit. We conclude that a hematocrit of 60% with increased blood volume is not associated with a cardiac limitation of O2 delivery, nor does it interfere with peripheral O2 extraction during exercise in the dog.  相似文献

The flexibility and posture of the neck in sauropod dinosaurs has long been contentious. Improved constraints on sauropod neck function will have major implications for what we know of their foraging strategies, ecology and overall biology. Several hypotheses have been proposed, based primarily on osteological data, suggesting different degrees of neck flexibility. This study attempts to assess the effects of reconstructed soft tissues on sauropod neck flexibility through systematic removal of muscle groups and measures of flexibility of the neck in a living analogue, the ostrich (Struthio camelus). The possible effect of cartilage on flexibility is also examined, as this was previously overlooked in osteological estimates of sauropod neck function. These comparisons show that soft tissues are likely to have limited the flexibility of the neck beyond the limits suggested by osteology alone. In addition, the inferred presence of cartilage, and varying the inter-vertebral spacing within the synovial capsule, also affect neck flexibility. One hypothesis proposed that flexibility is constrained by requiring a minimum overlap between successive zygapophyses equivalent to 50% of zygapophyseal articular surface length (ONP50). This assumption is tested by comparing the maximum flexibility of the articulated cervical column in ONP50 and the flexibility of the complete neck with all tissues intact. It is found that this model does not adequately convey the pattern of flexibility in the ostrich neck, suggesting that the ONP50 model may not be useful in determining neck function if considered in isolation from myological and other soft tissue data.  相似文献

The effects of resistance training on arterial blood pressure and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) at rest have not been established. Although endurance training is commonly recommended to lower arterial blood pressure, it is not known whether similar adaptations occur with resistance training. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that whole body resistance training reduces arterial blood pressure at rest, with concomitant reductions in MSNA. Twelve young [21 +/- 0.3 (SE) yr] subjects underwent a program of whole body resistance training 3 days/wk for 8 wk. Resting arterial blood pressure (n = 12; automated sphygmomanometer) and MSNA (n = 8; peroneal nerve microneurography) were measured during a 5-min period of supine rest before and after exercise training. Thirteen additional young (21 +/- 0.8 yr) subjects served as controls. Resistance training significantly increased one-repetition maximum values in all trained muscle groups (P < 0.001), and it significantly decreased systolic (130 +/- 3 to 121 +/- 2 mmHg; P = 0.01), diastolic (69 +/- 3 to 61 +/- 2 mmHg; P = 0.04), and mean (89 +/- 2 to 81 +/- 2 mmHg; P = 0.01) arterial blood pressures at rest. Resistance training did not affect MSNA or heart rate. Arterial blood pressures and MSNA were unchanged, but heart rate increased after 8 wk of relative inactivity for subjects in the control group (61 +/- 2 to 67 +/- 3 beats/min; P = 0.01). These results indicate that whole body resistance exercise training might decrease the risk for development of cardiovascular disease by lowering arterial blood pressure but that reductions of pressure are not coupled to resistance exercise-induced decreases of sympathetic tone.  相似文献

The objective of this publication is to report on the feasibility of using a tether system for obtaining data on blood pressure and heart rates of socially housed primates and to evaluate the extent to which housing environment alters cardiovascular responses (mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate). Blood pressure and heart rates of adult male baboons (Papio cynocephalus hamadryas) were evaluated over a 6 week period under three different housing conditions: social companion, individual, and socially unfamiliar. Social environment was manipulated in a specially designed cage that incorporated removable panels of either woven wire or solid sheet metal. The design of the cage permitted nonhuman primates to engage in species-typical social behaviors such as grooming and aggression. Using a tether and catheter system, we monitored cardiovascular physiology. We tested the hypothesis that individual housing, housing with social companions, and housing with social strangers would produce different mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate responses. Individual housing and housing with strangers produced resting mean arterial blood pressures that were elevated relative to blood pressure responses with social companions. Individual housing and housing with social strangers produced different patterns of cardiovascular response. Individual housing resulted in lowered heart rates and elevated blood pressures relative to the social companion condition. Housing with social strangers resulted in both elevated blood pressure and elevated heart rate, relative to the social companion condition. Responses observed during this study demonstrated the sensitivity of blood pressure and heart rates to differences in social environment.  相似文献

The cerebral blood flow of newborn lambs at reduced and elevated arterial blood pressures, induced by intravenous infusion of sodium nitroprusside and phenylephrine hydrochloride as well as blood withdrawal and reinfusion, were compared. Both blood withdrawal and sodium nitroprusside infusion reduced mean arterial pressure from 83 to 60 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133 Pa). Reinfusion of blood increased arterial pressure to 94 mmHg. Phenylephrine hydrochloride infusion increased arterial pressure to 102 mmHg. The cerebral blood flows at corresponding arterial pressures were similar (coefficient of correlation = 0.88, P less than 0.01). Cerebral blood flow before and after infusion of phenylephrine hydrochloride and sodium nitroprusside into the brain via the carotid artery did not change. The results indicate that blood-borne phenylephrine hydrochloride and sodium nitroprusside, in concentrations that would alter arterial blood pressure significantly from its resting level, do not change cerebral blood flow directly.  相似文献

Two equations have been developed that describe the interrelationship of the clinically measurable variables of the human systemic arterial system. An approximation method is given for their simultaneous solution for systolic and diastolic pressures in terms of heart rate, cardiac output, total peripheral resistance, and aortic distensibility. In this way, blood pressures were calculated for various clinically important and didactically useful situations. The effects on systolic and diastolic pressures due to changing either cardiac output or peripheral resistance or heart rate or aortic distensibility alone are shown. The effects on pulse pressure of varying cardiac output and peripheral resistance while holding mean arterial pressure constant are demonstrated. Compensatory mechanisms in hypertension and exercise are explored. Opinions and conclusions contained in this report are those of the author. They are not to be construed as necessarily reflecting the views or the endorsement of the Navy Department.  相似文献

Three-dimensional digital models of 16 different sauropods were used to examine the scaling relationship between metabolism and surface areas of the whole body, the neck, and the tail in an attempt to see if the necks could have functioned as radiators for the elimination of excess body heat. The sauropod taxa sample ranged in body mass from a 639 kg juvenile Camarasaurus to a 25 t adult Brachiosaurus. Metabolism was assumed to be directly proportional to body mass raised to the ¾ power, and estimates of body mass accounted for the presence of lungs and systems of air sacs in the trunk and neck. Surface areas were determined by decomposing the model surfaces into triangles and their areas being computed by vector methods. It was found that total body surface area was almost isometric with body mass, and that it showed negative allometry when plotted against metabolic rate. In contrast, neck area showed positive allometry when plotted against metabolic rate. Tail area show negative allometry with respect to metabolic rate. The many uncertainties about the biology of sauropods, and the variety of environmental conditions that different species experienced during the groups 150 million years of existence, make it difficult to be absolutely certain about the function of the neck as a radiator. However, the functional combination of the allometric increase of neck area, the systems of air sacs in the neck and trunk, the active control of blood flow between the core and surface of the body, changing skin color, and strategic orientation of the neck with respect to wind, make it plausible that the neck could have functioned as a radiator to avoid over-heating.  相似文献

It has recently been argued that the probable high cost of travel for sauropod dinosaurs would have made exploiting high forage energetically attractive, if this reduced the need to travel between food patches. This argument was supported by simple calculations. Here, we take a similar approach to evaluate the energetics of foraging close to the ground. We predict that small extensions of the neck beyond the minimum required for the mouth to reach the ground bring substantial energetic savings. Each increment of length brings a further saving, but the sizes of such benefits decrease with increasing neck length. However, the observed neck length of around 9 m for Brachiosaurus (for example) is predicted to reduce the overall cost of foraging by 80 per cent, compared with a minimally necked individual. We argue that the long neck of the sauropods may have been under positive selection for low foraging (instead of, or as well as, exploitation of high foraging), if this long neck allowed a greater area of food to be exploited from a given position and thus reduced the energetically expensive movement of the whole animal.  相似文献

Stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) with a local anesthetic increases muscle sympathetic nerve activity in the tibial nerve in humans. However, whether this sympathetic excitation in the tibial nerve is due to a sympathetic blockade in the neck itself, or due to infiltration of a local anesthetic to adjacent nerves including the vagus nerve remains unknown. To rule out one mechanism, we examined the effects of cervical sympathetic trunk transection on renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in anesthetized rats. Seven rats were anesthetized with intraperitoneal urethane. RSNA together with arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded for 15 min before and 30 min after left cervical sympathetic trunk transection. The baroreceptor unloading RSNA obtained by decreasing arterial blood pressure with administration of sodium nitroprusside was also measured. Left cervical sympathetic trunk transection did not have any significant effects on RSNA, baroreceptor unloading RSNA, arterial blood pressure, and heart rate. These data suggest that there was no compensatory increase in RSNA when cervical sympathetic trunk was transected and that the increase in sympathetic nerve activity in the tibial nerve during SGB in humans may result from infiltration of a local anesthetic to adjacent nerves rather than a sympathetic blockade in the neck itself.  相似文献

The cardiovascular effects of bolus doses of methionine-enkephalin (Met5-ENK) (1 to 100 micrograms/kg) were studied in 9 subjects in whom, at cardiac catheterization for evaluation of chest pain, patent coronary arteries were found. Met5-ENK produced a simultaneous increase in blood pressure and heart rate beginning within 20 sec, reaching maximal values between 30 and 40 sec, and then terminating by 60 sec. Heart rate, systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures increased significantly (p less than 0.0005); pulse pressure remained unchanged. Positive dose-effect relationships were observed for heart rate (p less than 0.002), systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures (p less than 0.05). Naloxone (0.5 mg/kg), given to 4 subjects, prevented the heart rate and blood pressure changes associated with Met5-ENK administration, demonstrating that the cardiovascular changes were mediated by opiate receptors. Subjects also described cutaneous paresthesias which were not prevented by naloxone pretreatment. These data suggest a role for peripheral enkephalins in cardiovascular regulation.  相似文献

An effect of peptide released by the heart atria of mammals and called the atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) on blood pressure and heart contractions was studied in rats with genetically determined arterial hypertension (SHR) and in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Nine male SHR rats and 11 male WKY rats, aged between 12 and 16 weeks, were given normal saline infusion for 30 minutes through implanted catheters to both ulnar vein and artery. Then, an infusion of ANF at the rate of 0.3 microgram/kg per hour followed for 35 minutes. An infusion of ANF produces significant decrease in the mean arterial blood pressure, systolic and diastolic pressures without significant effect on pulse pressure and heart contractions. AFN infusion with the same rate did not produce any significant differences in the arterial blood pressure and heart contractions in Wistar-Kyoto rats. The obtained results suggest that ANF may play a role in pathogenesis of the arterial blood hypertension.  相似文献

Some data of intact rabbits' cardiovascular system (arterial blood pressure, data of real and maximum function of heart ventricles) were investigated in different seasons of the year. It was revealed, that in winter the cardiovascular system functions with definite degree of overstrain, and in summer these data are on the lower level of the norm. Correlative analysis showed that in summer the degree of synchronization of the function of cardiovascular system drops and this can open wide possibilities for it's adaptation to variable conditions.  相似文献

Following a survey of headaches, in which questionnaires were sent to a random sample of the general population, groups of individuals with headache, unilateral headache, or migraine, and a fourth group who had not had a headache in the previous year were examined. Measurements of arterial blood pressure on 414 individuals gave no evidence of any differences between these groups for either systolic or diastolic pressure. The number of individuals that could be regarded as hypertensive in this community-based study was small, but it is concluded that most individuals with headache, and with migraine, have blood pressures similar to those who do not have headaches.  相似文献
