Differences in the morphology of Stylonychia vorax Stokes, 1885 and S. pustulata (Müller, 1786) Ehrenberg, 1838 recognizable in vivo are the shape, the ventral cirral pattern, the caudal cirri, and the mode of moving. The dorsal-bristle complexes are distinguishable by the length of dorsal kinety four and the spaces among the pairs of basal bodies. When the ranges of variation of different populations and clones are compared by biometric analyses, S. vorax shows a relatively stable cortical pattern whereas in S. pustulata the cortical elements are regulated depending on the size of the body and the number of adoral membranelles. In S. vorax morphogenesis begins with a proliferation of basal bodies close to the transverse cirri. In contrast, in S. pustulata, the oral primordium appears de novo between the left marginal row and the postoral cirri. All other morphogenetic events are the same for both species. In proters and opisthes the six anlagen of the frontal-ventral-transverse cirri are of different origin and evolve independently. Three anlagen of the opisthe separate from the oral primordium, two originate from the right, and one from the left postoral cirrus. Three anlagen of the proter evolve from the posteriormost cirrus in the frontal area, one from the parental undulating membranes, one from the buccal cirrus, and one from the cirrus below the buccal cirrus. The anlagen one to six generate one, three, three, three, four, and four cirri. The characteristic arrangement of the undulating membranes and the participation of only two postoral cirri in the formation of primordia provide features that distinguish between the often confused genera Oxytricha and Stylonychia.  相似文献

The morphology, ontogenesis, encystment, and 18S rRNA gene sequence of a new soil hypotrich ciliate, Kahliella matisi, were studied. Main characteristics of K. matisi are: (1) two short and six longitudinal cirral rows right of the adoral zone of membranelles and four longitudinal rows left of it; (2) three dorsal kineties, of which kinety 1 extends along the left cell margin, kinety 2 runs in a slightly sigmoidal line, and kinety 3 is distinctly shortened posteriorly. Ontogenesis is similar to that in congeners, especially in the development of the marginal rows and long dorsal kineties, the preservation of some old cirral rows after division, and the direction of the neokinetal wave. However, there are some peculiarities: (1) reorganization of the proximal parental adoral membranelles; (2) splitting of opisthe's anlage II into the cirral streak II and III; and (3) formation of the parental cirral row R3 from anlagen IV and V. During encystment, the body diminishes and becomes globular, the nuclear apparatus is reorganized, and the ciliature is resorbed. In our molecular phylogenies, the family Kahliellidae is polyphyletic and the position of K. matisi is rather poorly resolved, indicating a relationship with oxytrichids.  相似文献

The morphogenesis of the stichotrichous ciliate, Neokeronopsis spectabilis, collected from a freshwater pond near Harbin, north China, was observed following protargol impregnation. The overall morphogenetic events are characterized by: (1) the new oral primordium originates in association with the transverse cirri; (2) the proter's undulating membrane anlage is formed following the dedifferentiation of the parental endoral and paroral membranes, while the old adoral zone of membranelles is retained; (3) the fronto-ventral-transverse cirral anlagen originate independently on the right of the proter's undulating membrane anlage; (4) the left and right marginal cirri are derived from new anlagen that originate within the old marginal rows; (5) the generation of the dorsal kineties is of the "two-group-mode" with fragmentation and hence an oxytrichid pattern; and (6) similar to that in oxytrichids, the caudal cirri are formed at the posterior ends of the rightmost and two leftmost kineties of the group 1. Some new morphological data for N. spectabilis are also presented and the systematic position of the genus Neokeronopsis is briefly discussed. We conclude that its position among the urostylids is peripheral and that it very likely represents an intermediate form between the oxytrichids and urostylids.  相似文献

Oxytricha granulifera sp.n. differs from other members of the genus by its subpellicular granules and the strongly shortened dorsal kinety 4. The overall pattern of the morphogenetic events is similar to that known from other Oxytrichidae. However, the oral primordium evolves de novo between the left marginal cirral row and the postoral cirri. The six anlagen of the frontoventral cirri are of different origin. Two anlagen of the proter evolve from parental frontal cirri, two from the opisthe, and one includes basal bodies of the proter and opisthe. Two anlagen of the opisthe evolve from the oral primordium, and three primordia originate from the postoral cirri. Frontal cirrus 1 evolves from the paroral membrane in the proter, and from the oral primordium and the anlagen of the frontoventral cirri in the opisthe. The genus Oxytricha can be subdivided into several groups with regard to the origin of its oral primordium and the development of the frontoventral cirri. The morphogenesis of the dorsal kineties in the Hypotrichida is reviewed. Seven different modes of origin are distinguished. We conclude that morphogenetic features cannot be used in the classification of the Hypotrichida at the generic level, because we have too little information to decide whether special morphogenetic features are important at the generic or species level.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Classification of hypotrich ciliates is bewildering, possibly due to many unrecognized convergencies and the lack of detailed ontogenetic data in most species. A puzzling case are hypotrichs which have an obliquely extending "median cirral row" on the ventral surface between the right and left marginal cirral row. Such species are often assigned to the poorly defined family Amphisiellidae. However, we show by a comparative analysis of the divisional morphogenesis of three amphisiellid morphotypes and by a reevaluation of literature data that a median cirral row can be formed by at least four non-homologous processes. These data are used to define the "amphisiellid median cirral row/'(a row containing all or most cirri from at least two rightmost anlagen, arranged one behind the other during cytokinesis), to redefine the Amphisiellidae (Euhypotrichina with an amphisiellid median cirral row of which the anterior segment is formed by cirri of the rightmost ventral anlage and the posterior segment by cirri of the second ventral anlage from right; a middle segment may be formed by neighboring anlagen), and to improve the diagnoses of the seven genera assigned by us to this family. Attempts to reconstruct the evolution within the Amphisiellidae failed, in spite of the detailed morphological and ontogenetic data available. We thus conclude that such data, although highly valuable, are insufficient to light up the supergeneric phylogeny of hypotrich ciliates. For this, molecular markers and investigations of the morphogenetic processes at electron microscopic level appear indispensable.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Oxytricha fallax and Stylonychia pustulata possess 6 rows of dorsal bristle units. Each dorsal bristle unit consists of a pair of kinetosomes; the anterior kinetosome has a cilium and the posterior kinetosome a ciliary stub. The kinetosome pair, located at the bottom of a cortical pit surrounding the cilium and ciliary stub, is surrounded by an asymmetrical fibrillar mass. Future rows 1-4 are formed from 2 sets of primordia originating within mature dorsal rows 1-3. Rows 5 and 6 originate from the anterior regions of both right marginal cirral primordia. Old dorsal bristle units utilized in formation of primordia are presumably maintained in the new rows of the proter and opisthe; those outside the primordia are resorbed. The morphogenetic pattern of the Oxytrichidae is similar to those of the Urostylidae and Holostichidae, but quite different from that of the Euplotidae.  相似文献

The morphology and morphogenesis of a marine ciliate, Epiclintes auricularis rarisetus nov. sspec., collected from Qingdao, northern China were studied on live and protargol-impregnated specimens. This isolate can be recognized by its elongate, contractile and tripartite body with a size of 200-400×20-40 μm in vivo, about 30 ventrally located adoral membranelles, short undulating membranes, 2-3 frontal and 10-18 transverse cirri as well as 8-9 fronto-midventral rows, 22-31 left and 35-54 right marginal cirri, but no caudal cirri, invariably 3 dorsal kineties, of which kineties 1 and 3 link together anteriorly, 24-70 macronuclear nodules, marine habitat, and contribution of almost all frontal-midventral transverse cirral anlagen (FVT anlagen) to the formation of fronto-midventral rows. In its divisional morphogenesis, this species demonstrates some features rarely if ever found in any other urostyloids, e.g. partial replacement of the old adoral zone of membranelles, de novo formation of the oral primordium and the anlagen for marginal rows and dorsal kineties, contribution of almost all FVT anlagen to the transverse cirri, lack of frontoterminal cirri. In addition, its morphogenesis appears to differ in detail from that of E. auricularis auricularis nov. stat., based on published data. These remarkable morphogenetic traits of Epiclintes suggests a questionable systematic position for this genus in the Urostyloidea, therefore, further researches are urgently needed.  相似文献

Morphogenesis in Kyaroikeus cetarius, a large phyllopharyngean parasite of odontocete Cetacea, begins with the midventral proliferation of four short rows of kinetosomes immediately to the left of four pre-existing, somatic kinetofragments. The resulting field of eight short kineties is located within a shallow depression that gradually elongates and deepens to form the oral cavity of the opisthe. The four right-most of these kineties sink into the developing oral cavity and divide transversely, producing three distinct sets of kinetofragments. The anterior and posterior sets each consist of four small fragments and ultimately produce the mid-ventral, somatic kinetofragments of the proter and the opisthe, respectively. In addition, some kinetosomes from the anterior set give rise to the secretory organelle complex of the proter. The central group consists of two long and one short kinetofragment, which represent anlagen for the opisthe circumoral and preoral kineties, respectively. These anlagen migrate progressively anteriad while undergoing a pronounced counterclockwise rotation that eventually inverts the developing oral kineties. Simultaneously, two broad sheets of microtubules, one beneath each circumoral anlage, extend deep into the cytoplasm and unite to line the cytopharynx of the opisthe. Meanwhile, the remainder of the eight original kinetofragments move laterally out of the ventral depression to produce the left ciliary field of the opisthe. Morphogenetic events observed in K. cetarius are typical of cyrtophorid Phyllopharyngia and support inclusion of this genus within suborder Dysteriina.  相似文献

The morphology and main ontogenetic traits of a new stichotrich ciliate, Saudithrix terricola Foissner, AL-Rasheid and Berger n. gen., n. sp., from a terrestrial habitat in Saudi Arabia were investigated using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy. Saudithrix terricola is characterized by a large (200-350 x 70-150 microm), flexible body; an adoral zone formed like a three-quarter circle; a sickle-shaped buccal lip with a widened paroral forming a cyrtohymenid pattern with the endoral; 11 frontal and frontal-ventral cirral rows (including right marginal rows) and one left marginal row covering the ventral side; two buccal cirri; six to nine transverse cirri; three dorsal kineties; and two macronuclear nodules. The resting cyst is about 85 microm across, has a smooth wall, and a fluffy mucous layer. Most cirral anlagen originate within the parental rows and are arranged side by side, the proximal portion of the adoral zone of membranelles is reorganized, and some parental dorsal bristles are maintained. Neither the morphological nor the ontogenetic data reveal the systematic position of Saudithrix within the stichotrichs. The term multicorona is introduced and describes a frontal ciliature composed of four or more cirral bows.  相似文献

Ciliated protists represent a morphologically and genetically distinct group of single-celled eukaryotes which can reproduce asexually and sexually. Morphogenesis occurs in both asexual and sexual modes of reproduction which is of interest for researchers investigating cell differentiation, regeneration, systematics and evolution. However, studies of morphogenesis have concentrated almost entirely on the asexual mode. Here we use protargol staining to investigate the morphogenetic processes during sexual reproduction in the model species Euplotes vannus (Müller). The major events include: (1) two rounds of morphogenesis occur during sexual reproduction, i.e., conjugational and postconjugational reorganization; (2) in both processes the oral primordium is generated de novo in a pouch beneath the cortex; (3) the frontoventral-transverse cirri anlagen are formed de novo and fragment in a 3:3:3:3:2 pattern; (4) the leftmost cirrus and the paroral membrane do not change during conjugational morphogenesis, but reorganize de novo during postconjugational morphogenesis; (5) marginal cirral anlagen are formed de novo in both morphogenetic processes; (6) two or three caudal cirri are formed at the ends of the rightmost two or three old dorsal kineties; (7) the dorsal kineties are retained entirely. These results can serve as reference to investigate the morphogenetic events in the different stages of sexual reproduction.  相似文献

Cotterillia bromelicola nov. gen., nov. spec. was discovered in the tanks of the Mexican bromeliad Tillandsia heterophylla. Its morphology, ontogenesis, and 18S rDNA were studied with standard methods. Cotterillia has many cirral rows on both sides of the body. Uniquely, and thus used to diagnose the new genus Cotterillia, it has dorsal kineties originating de novo, producing neokinetal waves where the parental dorsal kineties reorganize to “combined rows”, consisting of dorsal bristles anteriorly and of cirri posteriorly. Thus, up to four generations of bristles and cirri occur on the dorsal body surface. Cotterillia bromelicola has a gonostomatid body and adoral zone of membranelles, while the dense ciliature and the neokinetal waves resemble kahliellid hypotrichs. However, the de novo origin of anlage 1 and the molecular analyses show convincingly that Cotterillia belongs to the GonostomatidaeSmall and Lynn, 1985, for which an improved diagnosis is provided. Thus, neokinetal waves originated several times independently. The molecular differences between Trachelostyla, Gonostomum, and Cotterillia are small (≤5%) compared to their distinct morphologies and ontogeneses, suggesting that the 18S rDNA underestimates generic diversity. Our study emphasizes the need of combined morphological, ontogenetic, and molecular investigations to unravel the complex phylogeny and evolution of hypotrich ciliates.  相似文献

A soil hypotrich ciliate, Afrokahliella paramacrostoma n. sp., was discovered in China. Its morphology, morphogenesis and molecular phylogeny were investigated using standard methods. The new species is characterized as follows: body about 140–180 × 60–70 μm in vivo, cortical granules absent, contractile vacuole positioned about 40% down length of body, 5–9 macronuclear nodules, 34–49 adoral membranelles, 3–5 buccal and 3–6 parabuccal cirri, usually two frontoventral rows, three or four left and two or three right marginal rows, three dorsal kineties and one dorsomarginal kinety; 1–3 and one or two caudal cirri located at the ends of dorsal kineties 1 and 2, respectively. The ontogenetic process is characterized by: (1) the marginal anlagen on each side develop in the outer right and the inner left marginal rows, respectively; (2) five frontoventral-transverse cirral anlagen, anlagen II–IV develop in secondary mode; (3) dorsal morphogenesis follows a typical Urosomoida-pattern, no parental dorsal kineties are retained; (4) caudal cirri are generated at the ends of dorsal kineties 1 and 2. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequence data reveals that Afrokahliella paramacrostoma n. sp. is closely related to Parakahliella macrostoma and Hemiurosomoida longa.  相似文献

A new hypotrichous ciliate, Schmidtiella ultrahalophila gen. nov., spec. nov., was isolated from a solar saltern on the island of Sal, Cape Verde. The possession of only one short dorsal kinety clearly distinguishes S. ultrahalophila from other known hypotrichous genera and species. Further diagnostic characters include: a flexible and slender body, an average size of 85 × 15 μm in vivo; a bipartite adoral zone with two hypertrophied frontal adoral membranelles and nine to twelve ventral adoral membranelles; three frontal, one parabuccal, two frontoventral, two or three postoral ventral, and two or three frontoterminal cirri; and marginal cirral rows variable in number, usually one on each side. Ontogenetic data indicate the following: the frontal‐ventral cirri originate from six or five anlagen; the proter inherits the parental adoral zone; the frontal and ventral cirri originate from five or six anlagen; and the marginal cirral rows and the dorsal kinety tend to originate intrakinetally. Additional marginal rows are rarely derived from de novo anlagen. Based on its morphology, morphogenesis and its SSU rRNA phylogenetic placement, the new species should be assigned to the order Sporadotrichida Fauré‐Fremiet, 1961. Due to low taxon sampling, however, its exact position in this order remains enigmatic.  相似文献

Morphology, cirral pattern, and morphogenesis of the new saline soil hypotrich, Gonostomum sinicum nov. spec. collected from Longfeng Wetland in Daqing, north China, were studied, using detailed live observations and protargol‐stained specimens. The new species is characterized as follows: (i) a size in vivo of 100–125 × 30–40 μm, (ii) colorless cortical granules, 0.5 μm across, arranged in short rows, (iii) an adoral zone composed of 28–33 membranelles, (iv) three or four frontoventral rows, one of which extends onto the postoral area, (v) left and right marginal rows composed of 18–27 and 21–35, cirri, respectively, and (vi) usually two transverse cirri. Morphogenesis is as usual for the genus Gonostomum, i.e. the cirral primordia II–VI are primary primordia which split into two sets for proter and opisthe in division middle stages, except for anlage I which develops independently. However, the number of frontoventral transverse anlagen is either five or six not only in different individuals but even in proter and opisthe of the same divider. The phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences showed that the genus Gonostomum is nonmonophyletic, indicating that the patterns of cirri and dorsal kineties are homoplasious characters. The new species G. sinicum nov. spec. is perhaps closely related to Cotterillia bromelicola and two congeners.  相似文献

A terrestrial oxytrichid ciliate Paraparentocirrus sibillinensis n. gen., n. sp., which was found in soil samples of a beech forest stand within the National Park of Sibillini Mountains, Italy, was investigated using live observation and protargol impregnation. The morphology of interphase, morphogenesis, and molecular phylogeny inferred from SSU rDNA sequences of this ciliate were studied. Paraparentocirrus n. gen., is mainly characterized by a semirigid body, an undulating membrane in the Oxytricha pattern, six fronto‐ventral (FV) rows, the absence of transverse cirri, one right and one left row of marginal cirri, four dorsal kineties, two dorsomarginal rows, and caudal cirri at the end of dorsal kinety 4. During morphogenesis, oral primordia develop through the proliferation of basal bodies from some cirri of FV rows 4 and 5, and FV row 6 takes part in the anlagen formation of the proter. The dorsal morphogenesis was typical of oxytrichids, with simple fragmentation of dorsal kinety 3, and the dorsomarginal rows developed from the right marginal row. Phylogenetic analyses based on the SSU rDNA sequences support the classification of this new genus in the stylonychines.  相似文献

Two hypotrichous ciliates from China were investigated. The common oxytrichid species Tetmemena pustulata (Müller, 1786) Eigner, 1999, isolated from the estuary of the Pearl River in southern China, was investigated with emphasis on its living morphology and infraciliature. Tetmemena pustulata is characterized as follows: body elliptical to obovoid in shape; 75–115 × 40–60 μm in vivo; two macronuclear nodules and two micronuclei; one contractile vacuole left of midline and somewhat ahead of midbody positioned; three frontal, four frontoventral, one buccal, three postoral ventral, two pretransverse ventral and five transverse cirri; cirrus III/2 ahead of level of cirrus IV/3; cirrus IV/2 arranged more anteriorly than cirrus V/4; transverse cirri not forming two distinct groups; three prolonged and widely separated caudal cirri; six dorsal kineties in Oxytricha-pattern with dorsal kineties 3 and 4 bipolar. The marine urostylid species Metaurostylopsis salina Li et al., 2005, isolated from an aquarium in Qingdao, northern China, was investigated with emphasis on its morphogenesis which is characterized by the de novo formation of the oral primordium in the proter and the development of the marginal rows from two anlagen that form within each parental structure separately in both dividers.  相似文献

Morphogenetic events during the division of the marine spirotrichous ciliate, Apokeronopsis crassa (Claparède & Lachmann 1858) n. comb. were investigated. Compared with members of the well-known genera Thigmokeronopsis, Uroleptopsis, and Pseudokeronopsis, A. crassa has one row of buccal cirri, high number of transverse cirri, clearly separated midventral rows, lacks thigmotactic cirri and a gap in adoral zone, its undulating membranes (UMs) anlage forms one cirrus and marginal rows and dorsal kineties form apokinetally during division. All these characteristics indicate that this organism represents a new taxon at the generic level, and hence a new genus is suggested, Apokeronopsis n. g. It is defined as thus: Pseudokeronopsidae with Pseudokeronopsis-like bicorona of frontal cirri and one marginal row on each side; one row of two or more buccal cirri in ordinary position; two midventral rows distinctly separated, hence of cirri that are not in a typical zig-zag pattern; high number of transverse cirri, caudal cirri absent, and frontoterminal cirri present; thigmotactic cirri absent, many macronuclear nodules fuse into many masses as well as marginal and dorsal kineties form apokinetally during morphogenesis. At the same time, the genus ThigmokeronopsisWicklow, 1981 is redefined, and one new combination, Apokeronopsis antarctica (Petz, 1995) n. comb. is proposed. The morphogenetic events of A. crassa are characterized as follows: (1) In the proter, the adoral zone of membranelles and UMs are completely renewed by the oral primordium. The UM anlage is formed apokinetally on the dorsal wall of the buccal cavity and is hence clearly separated from the frontoventral-transverse (FVT) cirral anlagen in the proter. (2) Frontoventral-transverse cirral anlagen are generated de novo in the outermost region of the cortex to the right of the old UMs. (3) A row of buccal cirri arises from FVT cirral streak I. (4) The marginal rows and dorsal kineties originate de novo in both dividers; no caudal cirri are formed. (5) The last FVT-streak contributes two frontoterminal cirri. (6) The many macronuclear nodules fuse into many masses (about 50 segments) during division, unlike a singular or branched mass as described in other urostylids.  相似文献

Chen, X., Huang, J. & Song, W. (2010). Ontogeny and phylogeny of Metaurostylopsis cheni sp. n. (Protozoa, Ciliophora), with estimating the systematic position of Metaurostylopsis. —Zoologica Scripta, 40, 99–111. The ciliate genus Metaurostylopsis seems to be a highly divergent marine‐habiting group, of which neither systematic position nor the variation of their ontogeny has been critically checked. In the present work, the morphology and morphogenesis during asexual division of a new form, Metaurostylopsis cheni sp. n., isolated from the Yellow Sea, China, were investigated and comparison among known congeners was performed. The new species has two types of cortical granules, the larger ones of which are flattened and oval or circular in outline with a longitudinal groove, yellow–green in colour, and arranged along the cirral rows and dorsal kineties, whereas the smaller ones are colourless or grayish and sparsely distributed. The main morphogenetic features are: (i) the entire parental ciliature, including the old oral apparatus, is renewed, (ii) the oral primordium of the proter originates de novo and beneath the surface of the buccal cavity, that is, sub‐apokinetally, (iii) the anlagen of the marginal rows and of the dorsal kineties are formed intrakinetally and (iv) fusion of the macronuclear nodules results in an irregular mass with only few branches. The small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene of M. cheni was sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis based on SSU rRNA gene sequence data shows that M. cheni clusters with all other Metaurostylopsis spp. sequenced to date indicating that the genus is monophyletic and is probably closely related to the Apokeronopsis–Thigmokeronopsis‐group, within the order Urostylida.  相似文献

The morphology, morphogenesis, and molecular phylogeny of Bakuella (Pseudobakuella) guangdongica n. sp., isolated from southern China, were investigated. The new species is characterized by a body length of 150–225 μm in vivo; 35–42 adoral membranelles; 3–5 buccal, two frontoterminal, 7–12 transverse and two pretransverse ventral cirri; midventral complex comprised of 10–20 pairs and two rows extending to transverse cirri; posterior part of marginal rows slightly overlapping; colorless cortical granules about 1 μm across, arranged in small groups; soil habitat. Its main ontogenetic features are: (1) in the proter, the parental adoral zone of membranelles is completely renewed by new structures; (2) in the opisthe, the oral primordium originates apokinetally, some old midventral cirri join the formation of frontoventral-transverse cirral anlagen; (3) the anlagen for marginal rows and dorsal kineties develop intrakinetally; and (4) the numerous macronuclear nodules fuse into a single mass before dividing. Phylogenetic analyses based on the SSU rDNA sequence suggest the non-monophyly of the genus Bakuella.  相似文献
