? Premise of the study: Viola hondoensis is a perennial herb that inhabits the understory of temperate, deciduous forests. It is an evergreen plant with a leaf life span that is shorter than a year. Its summer leaves are produced in spring and shed in autumn; winter leaves are produced in autumn and shed in spring. Here we asked why the plant sheds its winter leaves in spring, though climate conditions improve from spring to summer. We proposed four hypotheses for the cause of shedding: (1) changes in seasonal environment such as day length or air temperature, (2) shading by canopy deciduous trees, (3) self-shading by taller summer leaves, and (4) competition for nutrients between summer and winter leaves. ? Methods: To test these hypotheses, we manipulated the environment of winter leaves: (1) plants were transplanted to the open site where there was no shading by canopy trees. (2) Petioles of summer leaves were anchored to the soil surface to avoid shading of winter leaves. (3) Sink organs were removed to eliminate nutrient competition. ? Key results: Longevity of winter leaves was extended when shading by summer leaves was eliminated and when sink organs were removed, but not when plants were transplanted to the open site. ? Conclusion: We conclude that the relative difference in light availability between summer and winter leaves is a critical factor for regulation of leaf shedding, consistent with the theory of maximization of the whole-plant photosynthesis. 相似文献

The coffee plant is native to shaded environments and its seedlings are often produced in shaded nurseries. However, some nursery managers, in an effort to improve the acclimation of seedlings to field conditions after transplantation, produce seedlings in full sun exposure. In this study, the morphological and physiological parameters of arabica coffee ( Coffea arabica) seedlings produced in full sun (T1) and in shade (T2) were examined. The biomass accumulation and relative growth rate of T1 and T2 seedlings were similar. The T1 seedlings had less biomass allocation to shoots, a lower leaf mass ratio and a lower leaf area ratio; however, they had a greater net assimilation rate (rate of increase in plant mass per unit leaf area), which was associated with a greater net photosynthetic rate. There were no alterations in the concentrations of total chlorophylls or in the chlorophyll a/b ratio when comparing T1 and T2 seedlings. No indications of photoinhibition or photooxidative damage were observed in the T1 plants, which were shown to have a more robust antioxidant system than the T2 plants. Seedlings transferred from shade to full sun (T3) were not capable of utilising the incident extra light to fix CO 2. These seedlings showed a remarkable nocturnal retention of zeaxanthin and a significantly increased deepoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle, even at predawn, but the activity of antioxidant enzymes was lower than in the T1 and T2 plants. Despite the acclimation capacity of T3 seedlings to the new light environment, they exhibited chronic photoinhibition and considerable photooxidative damage throughout the seven days following the transfer to full sun exposure. We further discuss the practical implications of producing coffee seedlings in full sunlight and under shade. 相似文献

Cloud forests (CF) are disappearing due to anthropogenic causes such as cultivation. A characteristic feature of the CF is that a high proportion of its biomass occurs in the form of epiphytes, which are vital microhabitats to canopy dwelling arthropods. Coffee plantations overlap with CF and replace them. Epiphytes are abundant in shade coffee (SC) plantations and therefore these plants are an appropriate background for comparing the diversity between these systems. Spiders are understudied in canopies, and since they are major predators and their communities are highly sensitive to environmental changes, they can be used to test the similarity between habitats. We conducted a diversity assay of spiders living in epiphytes in cloud forest fragments and SC plantations, to test the hypothesis that SC plantations function as refugia. We manually sampled epiphytes within the canopy of two coffee plantations and two fragments of cloud forest in central Veracruz, Mexico. Our results show that SC plantations account for higher spider abundance and species richness than cloud forest fragments, there is little overlap between the species found in both systems, and the range of distribution and the guild structure of the spider assemblages between both systems is similar. As there were no significant differences between cloud forest fragments and SC plantations in terms of spider species assemblages, species distribution and guild structure the epiphytes from the SC plantations can be consider a refuge for the spider fauna from the surrounding cloud forest fragments. Epiphyte load and tree height are important factors driving the differentiation at community level, between sites and habitats. Bromeliads harbored more spiders than the other types of epiphytes, and since these plants are frequently removed by farmers or extracted for commercial and religious purposes, we suggest that preserving epiphytes in coffee plantations and cloud forest fragments could aid in the conservation of spiders. 相似文献

Screening cocktails of candidate genes for induction of pluripotency and self-renewal in nonstem cells has identified a surprising new embryonic stem cell regulator, the myc proto-oncogene. Here the possible mechanisms by which myc controls self-renewal and pluripotency are discussed. 相似文献

Key message The root shape and the angle between roots play an important role to prevent windthrow occurrence. Abstract Partial cutting is frequently applied to increase the volume growth of residual stems. However, the opening of the forest increases the wind speed within the site, and consequently, the risk of windthrow. In the case of black spruce, uprooted trees are normally characterized by a lifting of the root plate. This research was conducted to compare the root systems of standing and uprooted black spruces, after commercial thinning, by looking at root architecture, volume and radial growth. For this purpose, data from a pool of 18 standing and 18 uprooted trees from three study areas were analyzed. The distribution of roots around the stump was compared between both types of trees, standing and uprooted. The radial growth was measured at 30 cm in the stem, 10 cm and 60 cm in the roots. The shape (I and T-beam) and volume were recorded for each root system. The structure of the roots was also mapped to obtain a spatial overview of the angle between roots. The root shape (at 10 and 60 cm) and the angle between roots combined with the diameter of the stem at stump height seem to determine the vulnerability of black spruce to windthrow. Uprooted trees developed fewer roots, with a large sector around the stump without lateral roots which suggests its major implication in the resistance to windthrow. 相似文献

In this study, we have compared photosynthetic performance of barley leaves ( Hordeum vulgare L.) grown under sun and shade light regimes during their entire growth period, under field conditions. Analyses were based on measurements of both slow and fast chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence kinetics, gas exchange, pigment composition; and of light incident on leaves during their growth. Both the shade and the sun barley leaves had similar Chl a/ b and Chl/carotenoid ratios. The fluorescence induction analyses uncovered major functional differences between the sun and the shade leaves: lower connectivity among Photosystem II (PSII), decreased number of electron carriers, and limitations in electron transport between PSII and PSI in the shade leaves; but only low differences in the size of PSII antenna. We discuss the possible protective role of low connectivity between PSII units in shade leaves in keeping the excitation pressure at a lower, physiologically more acceptable level under high light conditions. 相似文献

Aim To assess the hypotheses that compound leaves of trees in the Amazon forest are an adaptation to drought and/or rapid growth. Location Amazon rain forest, South America. Methods Genera from 137 permanent forest plots spread across Amazonia were classified into those with compound leaves and those with simple leaves. Metrics of compound leaf prevalence were then calculated for each plot and regression models that accounted for spatial autocorrelation were used to identify associations between climate variables and compound leaf structure. We also tested for associations between compound leaf structure and a variety of ecological variables related to life history and growth strategies, including wood density, annual increase in diameter and maximum height. Results One plant family, Fabaceae, accounts for 53% of compound‐leaved individuals in the dataset, and has a geographical distribution strongly centred on north‐east Amazonia. On exclusion of Fabaceae from the analysis we found no significant support for the seasonal drought hypothesis. However, we found evidence supporting the rapid growth hypothesis, with possession of compound leaves being associated with faster diameter growth rates and lower wood densities. Main conclusion This study provides evidence that possession of compound leaves constitutes one of a suite of traits and life‐history strategies that promote rapid growth in rain forest trees. Our findings highlight the importance of carefully considering the geographical distribution of dominant taxa and spatial clustering of data points when inferring ecological causation from environment–trait associations. 相似文献

Climate change models predict a strong reduction of average precipitation, especially of the summer rainfall, and an increase in intensity and frequency of drought events in the Mediterranean region. The research aim was to understand how four dominant grass species (Arrhenatherum elatius, Cynosurus cristatus, Elymus repens, and Lolium perenne) in sub-Mediterranean meadows (central Apennines, Italy) modulate their resource acquisition and conservation strategies to short-term variation of the pattern of summer water supply. During summer 2016, using a randomized block design, we tested the effect of three patterns of summer water supply, differing in water amount and watering frequency, on leaf area, leaf dry mass, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf senescence, and plant height. Our results showed that dominant grass species can modulate their strategies to variation of the pattern of summer water supply, but the response of leaf traits and plant height is mediated by the set of functional characteristics of the species. E. repens and A. elatius, with summer green leaves, lower SLA, later flowering period, and deeper roots, were less influenced by changes in water amount. C. cristatus and L. perenne, which display acquisitive strategies (persistent leaves, higher SLA values), earlier flowering, and shallower roots were more influenced by changes in the pattern of summer water supply. Our results suggest that a short-term decrease in water availability might affect primarily species with trait syndromes less adapted to face summer drought. 相似文献

PurposeIndividual dosimetry is undoubtedly one of the best methods of assessing the exposure of personnel to ionizing radiation, however in case of nuclear medicine, the method applied to measure the dose does not always present a picture of the worker’s actual exposure. The highly non-homogeneous dose distribution on the hand means that the ring dosimeter, routinely used to measure the H p(0.07), provides only approximate dose values received by fingertips, the body part most exposed to ionizing radiation. This paper is an attempt to answer the question whether the wrist dosimeter used as a replacement for the ring dosimeter is able to provide information on doses for the most exposed fragments of the hand of an employee during handling procedures with the use of radiopharmaceuticals. MaterialsThroughout measurements performed in five nuclear medicine facilities, high-sensitivity thermoluminescent detectors were used. ResultsCorrection coefficients have been determined, which constitute an amendment to be made to move from the dose recorded by the wrist dosimeter to the doses received by the most exposed hand fragments. The fingertips received on average 25 times higher doses, compared to the values recorded by the wrist dosimeter. ConclusionsA wrist dosimeter can be used to measure the H p(0.07) in nuclear medicine, including as a gauge of the most exposed parts of the hand – the fingertips. However, the applicability of correction coefficients makes it necessary to ensure a stable position of the wrist dosimeter during routine procedures. 相似文献

Birds are major predators of many eared insects including moths, butterflies, crickets and cicadas. We provide evidence supporting the hypothesis that insect ears can function as ‘bird detectors’. First, we show that birds produce flight sounds while foraging. Eastern phoebes ( Sayornis phoebe) and chickadees ( Poecile atricapillus) generate broadband sounds composed of distinct repetitive elements (approx. 18 and 20 Hz, respectively) that correspond to cyclic wing beating. We estimate that insects can detect an approaching bird from distances of at least 2.5 m, based on insect hearing thresholds and sound level measurements of bird flight. Second, we show that insects with both high and low frequency hearing can hear bird flight sounds. Auditory nerve cells of noctuid moths ( Trichoplusia ni) and nymphalid butterflies ( Morpho peleides) responded in a bursting pattern to playbacks of an attacking bird. This is the first study to demonstrate that foraging birds generate flight sound cues that are detectable by eared insects. Whether insects exploit these sound cues, and alternatively, if birds have evolved sound-reducing foraging tactics to render them acoustically ‘cryptic’ to their prey, are tantalizing questions worthy of further investigation. 相似文献

Although the alternative oxidase, AOX, was known to be widespread in the animal kingdom by 2004, its exact physiological role in animals remains poorly understood. Here we present what evidence has accumulated thus far, indicating that it may play a role in enabling animals to resist various kinds of stress, including toxins, abnormal oxygen or nutrient levels, protein unfolding, dessication and pathogen attack. Much of our knowledge comes from studies in model organisms, where any benefits from exogenously expressed AOX may be masked by its unregulated expression, which may itself be stressful. The further question arises as to why AOX has been lost from some major crown groups, namely vertebrates, insects and cephalopods, if it plays important roles favouring the survival of other animals. We conclude by presenting some speculative ideas addressing this question, and an outline of how it might be approached experimentally. 相似文献

The changes observed photosystem I activity of lettuce plants exposed to iron deficiency were investigated. Photooxidation/reduction kinetics of P700 monitored as Δ A820 in the presence and absence of electron transport inhibitors and acceptors demonstrated that deprivation in iron decreased the population of active photo-oxidizable P700. In the complete absence of iron, the addition of plant inhibitors (DCMU and MV) could not recover the full PSI activity owing to the abolition of a part of P700 centers. In leaves with total iron deprivation (0 μM Fe), only 15% of photo-oxidizable P700 remained. In addition, iron deficiency appeared to affect the pool size of NADP + as shown by the decline in the magnitude of the first phase of the photooxidation kinetics of P700 by FR-light. Concomitantly, chlorophyll content gradually declined with the iron concentration added to culture medium. In addition, pronounced changes were found in chlorophyll fluorescence spectra. Also, the global fluorescence intensity was affected. The above changes led to an increased rate of cyclic electron transport around PSI mainly supported by stromal reductants. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine which factor is the most likely one to have stimulated the mineralization process in the in vitro experiments of Klein-Nulend et al. (Arth. Rheum., 29, 1002-1009, 1986), in which fetal cartilaginous metatarsals were externally loaded with an intermittent hydrostatic pressure, by compressing the gas phase above the culture medium. Analytical calculations excluded the possibility that the tissue was stimulated by changes in dissolved gas concentration, pH or temperature of the culture medium through compression of the gas phase. The organ culture experiments were also mechanically analyzed using a poroelastic finite element (FE) model of a partly mineralized metatarsal with compressible solid and fluid constituents. The results showed that distortional strains occurred in the region where mineralization proceeded. The value of this strain was, however, very sensitive to the value of the intrinsic compressibility modulus of the solid matrix (Ks). For realistic values of Ks the distortional strain was probably too small (about 2 microstrain) to have stimulated the mineralization. If the distortional strain was not the factor to have enhanced the mineralization process, then the only candidate variable left is the hydrostatic pressure itself. We hypothesize that the pressure may have created the physical environment enhancing the mineralization process. When hydrostatic pressure is applied, the balance of the chemical potential of water across cell membranes may be disturbed, and restored again by diffusion of ions until equilibrium is reached again. The diffusion of ions may have contributed to the mineralization process. 相似文献

The Nature Conservancy’s wetland restoration at the Emiquon Preserve has been a success to date, but there are warning signs of undesirable change if left unmanaged. A water control structure built in 2016 will increase management capabilities, but periodic connection to the river, which has experienced human alterations typical of rivers in eastern North America and Europe, also introduces risks. The Conservancy’s planning process has identified (1) management targets (e.g., diverse native fish populations); (2) Key Ecological Attributes (KEAs) that maintain the targets (e.g., relatively deep over-wintering habitats for fishes); (3) measurable indicators for the KEAs (e.g., depth in winter); and (4) desirable ranges for the indicators (e.g., 10% of the aquatic area has depths of 2–3 m and dissolved oxygen levels of 4–6 mg/l). Assessments and experiments completed to date have focused on documenting the restoration, evaluating effects of the record flood of 2013, and predicting outcomes of management actions. Simulation models of hydrology, hydraulics, and vegetation response developed during the planning process allayed some concerns of stakeholders, but not all outcomes are predictable from either current theory or management experience. Therefore, each action can be considered not only as an adaptive management experiment focused on sustaining targets, but also contributing to ecological theory and restoration practice on a broader scale. 相似文献
