Continuing study on the Chinese species of Phygasia Chevrolat, 1836 revealed 10 specimens collected from Taiwan that were distinctly different from other described species within this genus. The new species is similar to P. ornata Baly, 1876 and P. pseudornata Wang et Yang, 2008, but can be distinguished from them by the color and position of elytra markings as well as the shape of male genitalia: the black markings on the elytra only covered the humeral area and the sub-apical area of elytra, and genitalia of male pointed and short with big basal opening. A new species, Phygasia taiwanensis sp. n., is described herein.

A new species of Cattiena Hunt & Spiridonov, 2001 from a diplopod (Spirobolida: Pseudospirobolellidae Brolemann) collected near Sa Pa, Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, is described. Females of Cattiena fansipanis n. sp. are closely related to females of two other known species of the genus, C. trachelomegali Hunt & Spiridonov, 2001 and C. trigoniuli Hunt & Spiridonov, 2001, but can be distinguished by the distinctly more anterior position of the vulva, abrupt constriction of the body at the vulval level, presence of two swollen portions of the oviducts, and longer body and tail. Males of new species differ by having a rounded cephalic region followed by 13–14 annules which are larger than those which follow them, a different size and shape of the spicules and gubernaculum, and body and tail length. Three size groups of juveniles were found in the host gut lumen, presumably representing second, third and fourth juvenile stages. The morphology of the juvenile stages is described.

Paraliparis adustus sp. nov., a snailfish species from the Bering Sea near the Aleutian Island Archipelago, Alaska, is described based on a single mesopelagic specimen. This new species is clearly distinguished by a combination of several morphological features and meristic counts, including long pointed gill rakers with 0–3 spinules at or near the tip, anus positioned forward near the pectoral symphysis, and color uniform brown. Paraliparis bullacephalus sp. nov. from Shelikof Strait, Gulf of Alaska, is also described. This new species is very similar in meristic characters and general body shape and size to P. holomelas Gilbert, but differs primarily in morphological features of the head, particularly in the shape of the dorsal contour of the head, snout, and opercular flap, mouth size, and eye position.

A new species of Leymus section Racemosus, L. pluriflorus L.B.Cai & T.L.Zhang, is described and illustrated. It grows in the eastern part of Qinghai Province and the southern part of Gansu Province, China. It most closely resembles L. crassiusculus L.B.Cai, from which it differs in having longer rachis internodes, some pedicellate spikelets, more florets per spikelet, glabrous lemmas, shorter paleas and shorter anthers. It differs from all other Chinese species taxa in Leymus with regard to the large number (8–12) of florets in its spikelets, and from all species of Leymus in adjacent countries in having three to four spikelets per node. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 343–348.

Ischnura species (Odonata) are among the most common damselflies in the world, which often exhibit female color polymorphisms. One morph, called androchrome, is similar to males in its color pattern, whereas the other morphs, generally referred to as gynochromes, exhibit female‐specific colors. In several Ischnura species, the female polymorphism is heritable, although molecular and genetic mechanisms remain largely unknown. The dominant‐recessive patterns of the female color morphs may differ between species. For example, androchromic females are dominant to gynochromic females in Ischnura elegans, whereas androchromic females are recessive in Ischnura senegalensis. Here we report a case of interspecific hybridization between a gynochrome female of I. elegans and a male of I. senegalensis in the laboratory. We obtained 61 hybrid adult offspring, of which all 31 females were of gynochrome morph. DNA analyses of the hybrids confirmed that nuclear DNA sequences were derived from both parent species, whereas mitochondrial DNA sequences were maternally inherited. In the hybrids, the postocular spots of female heads, the shape of male appendages, and the color of female's cerci resembled those of I. elegans, whereas the size of abdominal blue spots was similar to that of I. senegalensis. The shape of prothorax and basal abdominal markings were intermediate in females. The larval developmental traits and the morphological changes in the final larval instar of the hybrids were similar to those of I. senegalensis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of hybrids between two damselfly species with different dominant‐recessive patterns of female color morphs.

The genus Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) comprises important pathogens, endophytes or saprobes with diverse host associations and worldwide distribution. Phomopsis theae is the first and hitherto the only recorded Diaporthe species on Camellia in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the Diaporthe species associated with symptomatic and asymptomatic tissues of Camellia spp. from several provinces in China. Eighty-three strains were isolated in the present study. Based on the multi-locus (ITS, HIS, TEF1, TUB) phylogenetic analyses and phenotypic characters, four novel species (D. apiculata Y.H. Gao & L. Cai, D. compacta Y.H. Gao & L. Cai, D. oraccinii Y.H. Gao & L. Cai, D. penetriteum Y.H. Gao & L. Cai), and three known species (D. discoidispora, D. hongkongensis, D. ueckerae) were identified. Five strains were assigned to D. amygdali species complex and 17 strains to D. eres species complex respectively, but they could not be further identified to species level using current multi-locus phylogenetic analysis and morphological characters. Of the identified species, D. compacta and D. discoidispora are only known as endophytes. Diaporthe hongkongensis is the dominant species on Camellia, accounting for 53.3% of the frequency of occurrence. Diaporthe lithocarpus is synonymized with D. hongkongensis; D. miriciae is synonymized with D. ueckerae. Our study revealed a high diversity of undescribed Diaporthe species on Camellia.
