Due to the close association between parasites and their hosts, many ‘generalist’ parasites have a high potential to become specialized on different host species. We investigated this hypothesis for a common ectoparasite of seabirds, the tick Ixodes uriae that is often found in mixed host sites. We examined patterns of neutral genetic variation between ticks collected from Black‐legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica) in sympatry. To control for a potential distance effect, values were compared to differences among ticks from the same host in nearby monospecific sites. As predicted, there was higher genetic differentiation between ticks from different sympatric host species than between ticks from nearby allopatric populations of the same host species. Patterns suggesting isolation by distance were found among tick populations of each host group, but no such patterns existed between tick populations of different hosts. Overall, results suggest that host‐related selection pressures have led to the specialization of I. uriae and that host race formation may be an important diversifying mechanism in parasites.  相似文献

The responsiveness of Ixodes rubicundus ticks on questing substrates and the success of their attachment to non-living substrates were investigated. The purpose of this study was to relate responsiveness to conditions of temperature and humidity, to compare the efficacy of flagging and dragging methods to estimate the size of populations of adult I. rubicundus in the field, and to determine the possible influence of host odour on the efficacy of these methods. Responsiveness was tested under varying conditions of temperature and humidity under field conditions, and the same ticks were used to determine the duration of attachment to a flannel cloth, either impregnated with host odour from sheep wool or without it. Flagging and dragging methods were compared under laboratory conditions with cloths either treated with host odour or not. Within the range of ambient temperatures recorded during this study (7–25°C) most of the ticks (86%) were responsive. No obvious relationship between temperature, relative humidity and responsiveness of ticks was evident. Ticks remained on average 32.9 seconds (n=64) on cloth treated with host odour compared to 9.1 seconds (n=54) on untreated cloth. Flagging was 1.5–1.7 times as effective as dragging and treatment of the cloths with host odour increased the efficacy 2.4 (dragging) to 2.8 (flagging) times. The reactions of ticks to external stimuli should, therefore, be taken into account to maximize field sampling success.  相似文献

Seasonality of the epidemic and epizootic processes of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) depend on the period of activity of ixodid ticks Ixodes persulcatus Schulze and I. ricinus Linnaeus, which are the main reservoirs and vectors of TBE virus, and also on the process of their activation. The period of activity is the period during which the ticks occur in the active state. Activation is the transition into this state of ticks that moulted from the preceding stage and completed post-moulting development. For I. persulcatus, the first adult ticks generally emerge between April 10 and May 9. Under a variety of natural conditions, activation of adult I. persulcatus after wintering lasts for 45–86 days and this period may be even longer in certain areas of the Far East. The period during which one-half of the entire tick population becomes activated (AT50) comprises no more than 10–20 days. In adult I. ricinus ticks the activation period may last even longer than in I. persulcatus. The data on duration of the period of activity and on activation of larval and nymphal stages of both tick species were considered. Ticks exhausting their nutrient reserves and failing to find a host die quickly. The period during which 50% of the entire tick population die under natural conditions is designated LT50. The main types of I. persulcatus and I. ricinus seasonal activity within their species ranges were reviewed. Data on the relationship between TBE virus reproduction in a natural focus and physiological age, pattern of activation, and seasonal changes in age structure of the tick population were analyzed. Seasonal changes in the prevalence of infection among active unfed adult ticks in a natural population are determined by virus content in individual ticks at the moment of their activation and also by the duration of subsequent virus persistence (the rate of virus loss) in ticks. Apparently, the opportunity and frequency of horizontal TBE virus transmission under natural conditions, change during the season of tick activity.  相似文献

We review the findings of a longitudinal study of transmission of the intracellular tick-borne bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum from sheep to Ixodes ricinus ticks under natural conditions of tick attachment in the UK. In this study, sheep-to-tick transmission efficiency varied in a quadratic relationship with the number of adult ticks that were feeding on the sheep. We raise the hypothesis that this relationship may be due to conflicting effects of the density of ticks on bacterial survival and target cell (neutrophil) fluxes at the tick-host interface: in the same sheep at the same time, resistance to ticks was progressively inhibited with increasing number of feeding adult ticks, and investigation of serological responses to tick antigens suggesting loss of resistance may be associated with polarisation of host Th1 to Th2 type responses to ticks. We also raise the hypothesis that these properties, with superimposed effects on tick survival, may mean that variation in tick density is an important causal factor of observed variations in the force of A. phagocytophilum infection amongst different geographic foci. Under controlled test conditions, unfed male and female Hyalomma truncatum ticks exhibited a positive scototaxis to stationary, two-dimensional targets. Upright-positioned rectangles were the most attractive targets. The attractiveness of these targets increased with their size. Significantly more ticks responded scototactically positively to the targets under a luminance contrast ratio of 5:1, as compared with other luminance contrast ratios. Targets with an elevation angle of 13° were occupied more frequently than objects with higher elevation angles. Scototaxis was the same towards a stationary and a sinusoid oscillating target. When an upright-positioned rectangle was combined with a CO2 gradient, the number of ticks that migrated into the CO2 gradient and contacted the target did not increase significantly. The interval between exposure and first locomotion of the ticks, however, was significantly shorter under the influence of a CO2 gradient than in all other experiments without a CO2 gradient. A temperature gradient simulating a natural host (cattle) did not alter the scototaxis. The results of these investigations suggest that the positive scototaxis exhibited by adult H. truncatum ticks is not likely to be part of their appetence behaviour but rather searching behaviour to find adequate protection from harsh climatic conditions.  相似文献

Ticks are gorging-fasting organisms; their life cycle is characterized by alternate off-host (starvation) and on-host (meal) conditions. Their generation time is estimated in several years and many ticks spend more than 95% of their life off the host. They seem to have a unique strategy to endure the off-host state for a long period. Thus, we focused on autophagy, which is induced by starvation and is essential for extension of the lifespan, and hypothesized that ticks also have a system of autophagy to overcome the starved condition. Recently, we showed the existence of a homologue of an ATG gene, ATG12, and its expression pattern from nymphal to adult stages in a three-host tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis. The expression level of HlATG12 was downregulated at the beginning of feeding and was highest at 3 months after engorgement. In addition, the HlAtg12 protein was localized to the region around granule-like structures within midgut cells of unfed adults. These results indicate that HlATG12 functions during unfed stages. Here, a potential role of autophagy in unfed ticks is discussed with regard to reports in other animals, such as yeast, mammal, and fruit fly.

Desert ants of the genus Cataglyphis perform large-scale foraging excursions from which they return to their nest by path integration. They do so by integrating courses steered and the distances travelled into a continually updated home vector. While it is known that the angular orientation is based on skylight cues, it still is largely enigmatic how the ants measure distances travelled. We extended the ants' task into the third dimension by training them to walk within an array of uphill and downhill channels, and later testing them on flat terrain, or vice versa. In these tests the ants indicated homing distances that did not correspond to the distances actually travelled, but to the ground distances; that is, to the sum of the horizontal projections of the uphill and downhill segments of the ants' paths. These results suggest a much more sophisticated mechanism of distance estimation than hitherto thought. The ants must be able to measure the slopes of undulating terrain and to integrate this information into their "odometer" for the distance estimation process.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that influence patterns of ectoparasite infestation within wildlife populations involves knowledge of the mechanisms that influence host infestation. For ectoparasitic ticks, knowing where ticks might occur in the off-host environment and how they locate their hosts is essential to understanding patterns of ectoparasite infestation. The tuatara tick (Amblyomma sphenodonti) parasitises the tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) on Stephens Island, New?Zealand. We completed a series of laboratory microcosm experiments to examine daily activity patterns, microhabitat preferences and host-seeking behaviour by Amblyomma sphenodonti. Firstly, to determine the diel activity pattern of ticks, we observed the behaviour of ticks every 2?h over a 48-h period. We then tested the preferences of ticks for soil moisture, soil texture and shade by offering different pairs of substrate conditions. Last, to determine what cues ticks used to locate their hosts, we tested the response of ticks to filter paper infused with host scent or excrement. Ticks were most active at night. They also showed a significant preference for moister, coarser and shaded substrates 12 h after the start of the experiment. Ticks did not show an immediate response to either of the two host stimuli, but after 12 h showed a significant preference for host scent and avoided host excreta. We suggest that the microhabitat preferences of ticks reflect conditions within host refuges (burrows), and that the delayed response to host odour suggests ticks could use host scent to identify substrates frequented by hosts.  相似文献

We report biological data of two generations of Amblyomma triste in laboratory and compared the suitability of different host species. Infestations by larval and nymphal stages were performed on guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), chickens (Gallus gallus), rats (Rattus norvegicus), rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), wild mice (Calomys callosus), dogs (Canis familiaris) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Infestations by adult ticks were performed on dogs, capybaras and rabbits. Tick developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27 °C and RH 90%. Guinea pigs were the most suitable hosts for larvae and nymphs, followed by chickens. The remaining host species were less suitable for immature ticks as fewer engorged ticks were recovered from them. Mean larval feeding periods varied from 3.8 to 4.7 d between different host species. Mean larval premolt periods ranged from 8.9 to 10.4 d. Nymphal mean feeding periods varied from 4.2 to 6.2 d for ticks fed on different host species. Premolt period of male nymphs (mean: 15.4 d) was significantly longer than that of female nymphs (14.7 d). Female nymphs were significantly heavier than male nymphs. The overall sex ratio of the adult ticks emerged from nymphs was 0.9:1 (M:F). Capybaras were the most suitable host for the tick adult stage as significantly more engorged females were recovered from them and these females were significantly heavier than those recovered from dogs or rabbits. The life cycle of A. triste in laboratory could be completed in an average period of 155 d. The potential role of guinea pigs, birds and capybaras, as hosts for A. triste in nature, is discussed. A major question for understanding the ecology of parasite infections and diseases in wildlife populations concerns the transmission pathways among hosts. Network models are increasingly used to model the transmission of infections among hosts – however, few studies have integrated host behaviour and genetic relatedness of the parasites transmitted between hosts. In a study of the Australian sleepy lizard Tiliqua rugosa and its three‐host ixodid tick (Bothriocroton hydrosauri), we asked if patterns of genetic relatedness among ticks were best explained by spatial proximity or the host transmission network. Using synchronous GPS locations of over 50 adult lizards at 10 min intervals across the three‐month activity period, over 2 years, we developed two alternative parasite transmission networks. One alternative was based on the spatial proximity of lizards (at the centre of their home ranges), and the other was based on the frequency of asynchronous shared refuge use between pairs of lizards. In each year, adult ticks were removed from lizards and their genotypes were determined at four polymorphic microsatellite loci. Adult ticks collected from the same host were more related to each other than ticks from different hosts. Similarly, adult ticks collected from different lizards had a higher relatedness if those lizards had a shorter path length connecting them on each of the two networks we explored. The predictors of tick relatedness differed between years. In the first year, the asynchronous shared refuges network was the stronger predictor of tick relatedness, whereas in year two, the spatial proximity‐based network was the stronger predictor of tick relatedness. We speculate on how changing environmental conditions might change the relative importance of alternative processes driving the transmission of parasites.  相似文献

Abstract

Feral goats and hares were commonly infested by immature stages of the New Zealand cattle tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis. No explanation could be found for the low prevalence of adult ticks on these hosts. The ears of both host species were almost the exclusive feeding site of the ticks and this may be a consequence of grooming behaviour. Another potential host, the rabbit, was examined but few were found to be infested.

The less restricted range of non-domesticated hosts, together with feeding habits that differ from domestic stock, make them an important additional source of information on the ecology and seasonal pattern of activity of H. longicornis. Also, they are a source of contamination for tick-free pasture, and could possibly maintain the tick population in the absence of sheep and cattle. It is important that their role as alternative hosts be understood and considered in tick-control programmes.  相似文献

The slender filefish is a master of adaptive camouflage and can change its appearance within 1–3 s. Videos and photographs of this animal's cryptic body patterning and behavior were collected in situ under natural light on a Caribbean coral reef. We present an ethogram of body patterning components that includes large‐ and small‐scale spots, stripes and bars that confer a variety of cryptic patterns amidst a range of complex backgrounds. Field images were analyzed to investigate two aspects of camouflage effectiveness: (1) the degree of colour resemblance between animals and their nearby visual stimuli; and (2) the visibility of each fish's actual body outline vs. its illusory outline. Most animals more closely matched the colour of nearby visual stimuli than that of the surrounding background. Three‐dimensional dermal flaps complement the melanophore skin patterns by enhancing the complexity of the fish's physical skin texture to disguise its actual body shape, and the morphology of these structures was studied. The results suggest that the body patterns, skin texture, postures and swimming orientations putatively hinder both the detection and recognition of the fish by potential visual predators. Overall, the rapid speed of change of multiple patterns, colour blending with nearby backgrounds, and the physically complicated edge produced by dermal flaps effectively camouflage this animal among soft corals and macroalgae in the Caribbean Sea.  相似文献

1. Biparental care is stabilised if parents perform different tasks during care. Specialised parental roles may require different time and energy budgets that in turn are expected to influence the activity and space use of sexes. 2. Here we investigate movement patterns of the biparental Lethrus apterus beetle using a grid of pitfall traps in their natural habitat. 3. Sexes of the burrow building L. apterus perform different roles during caregiving, as females collect most of the leaves, which serve as food for the offspring while paired males stay mostly in the burrow. We hypothesised that sex differences in mate search and parental activities are reflected in movement patterns. 4. We found that females frequently travelled short distances, whereas males were detected less often but when detected, they travelled significantly longer distances than females. 5. Our results are consistent with the notion that efficient parental food provisioning requires more localised movement and activity patterns. Furthermore, the long distance movements of some males may indicate active mate searching behaviour.  相似文献

The attachment sites of female Karoo paralysis ticks (Ixodes rubicundus) and equations to assess tick burdens on domestic (sheep and goats) and natural (mountain reedbuck) hosts were determined. No intraspecific differences in attachment sites for Merino sheep and Angora goats could be observed, but interspecific differences were evident.Ixodes rubicundus in general attaches on the ventral aspects of the host. More than 50% of these ticks attached to the fron quarters of the body of the domestic host, and 60% to the hindquarters of the natural host. The length of Merino sheep wool had no affect on either the attachment site or number of attached ticks. In general, more ticks were found attached to the woollen than non-woollen body areas. Equations are provided which can estimate tick burdens on hosts by counting the ticks on two or three selected body areas of the host. To facilitate sampling procedures, approximate sample sizes for the various hosts needed to estimate average tick burdens have been provided. Depending on the level of precision required (with bounds on the error of estimation equal to 1, 2 or 5 ticks), the number of animals in a flock of 200 Angora goats that must be examined varied from 26 to 85.  相似文献

The parasitic wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri parasitizes hard ticks and is therefore considered as a potential candidate for biological control of ticks. However, there are still considerable gaps of knowledge about the biology of I. hookeri, especially for European populations. Thus, the present study was performed to assess important life‐history parameters of the parasitoid in Germany. Field studies accomplished in three successive years revealed that unfed Ixodes ricinus nymphs are infested by the parasitoid at a low but constant rate of 1.9–3.8% and that adult wasps are present only during a short period in late summer. The mean developmental time of wasps in I. ricinus nymphs ranged from 28 to 70 days under constant laboratory conditions and was prolonged in the second half of the year. Bioassays on parasitization and host preference behaviour showed that unfed nymphs of the host species I. ricinus are significantly preferred in experiments, in which unfed and engorged larvae as well as fully engorged nymphs were offered as alternatives. The marsh tick Dermacentor reticulatus was not accepted as an alternative host. Our data show that the investigated I. hookeri populations differ markedly from populations in other regions of the world in many aspects. The adaptation of different strains to local conditions explains the limited success of imported strains in earlier biological control attempts and highlights the importance of doing research to enhance the control potential of native strains.  相似文献

There is a public perception that the white‐tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) is the main reservoir supporting the maintenance and spread of the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. This study examines the pathogen prevalence rate of Borrelia in adult Ixodes scapularis (Ixodida: Ixodidae), the black‐legged tick, collected from white‐tailed deer and compares it with pathogen prevalence rates in adult ticks gathered by dragging vegetation in two contiguous counties west of the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. In both Broome and Chenango Counties, attached and unattached ticks harvested from white‐tailed deer had significantly lower prevalences of B. burgdorferi than those collected from vegetation. No attached ticks on deer (n = 148) in either county, and only 2.4 and 7.3% of unattached ticks (n = 389) in Broome and Chenango Counties, respectively, were harbouring the pathogen. This contrasts with the finding that 40.8% of ticks in Broome County and 46.8% of ticks in Chenango County collected from vegetation harboured the pathogen. These data suggest that a mechanism in white‐tailed deer may aid in clearing the pathogen from attached deer ticks, although white‐tailed deer do contribute to the spatial distribution of deer tick populations and also serve as deadend host breeding sites for ticks.  相似文献

The behavior of 4 tick species in the presence of their dominant host species was examined. Nymphs and adult ticks could locate a host from greater distances than the larvae. Adult Aponomma concolor were able to locate their mammalian host (echidna) from distances greater than 3 reptile-infesting species could locate their hosts. The results suggested that all 4 tick species detect hosts passively, which may be related to the relative scarcity of hosts and their irregular use of refuge sites.  相似文献

Radio-telemetry was used to study the late autumn and winter movements of twenty adult signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (32.9–63.8 mm carapace length) an introduced exotic crayfish species, in the upland River Wharfe, northern England. The distances moved during the study varied greatly between individuals (0–328 m). Movements were generally sporadic; crayfish would remain in one position for several weeks and make occasional movements to new locations. Total distances travelled, linear range and ranging area did not differ significantly between males and females. The distance travelled in upstream and downstream directions did not differ significantly and there was no correlation between distance travelled and crayfish size. Several high flow events occurred during the study, but these did not cause any mortality or apparent displacement of crayfish downstream, suggesting that this is not a significant factor in downstream dispersal or mortality of adults of this invasive crayfish species in winter. A marked reduction in large-scale movements occurred in mid-December which coincided with a decline in water temperature. There was a less distinct pattern in local activity which was strongly correlated with water temperature and varied before and after mid-December.  相似文献

The effect of feeding immature Karoo paralysis ticks (Ixodes rubicundus) on the resting metabolic rate (RMR) of their principal natural host, the rock elephant shrew (Elephantulus myurus), was investigated under laboratory conditions. The elephant shrews were artificially infested with numbers of ticks simulating natural burdens. The RMR of the elephant shrews was quantified by measuring the oxygen consumption in an open through-flow system. The RMR of hosts infested only with larvae did not differ from that of the control group. Those infested with nymphs, or nymphs and larvae, had significantly lower RMR's compared to the control animals. There were no signs of paralysis in any of the infested hosts.  相似文献

Biological control efficiency can be improved by developing effective mass‐rearing systems to produce large numbers of high‐quality parasitoids. This study explored an alternative host for rearing Sclerodermus brevicornis (Kieffer) (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), a potential biocontrol agent for the suppression of exotic and invasive wood‐boring longhorn beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) populations in the European agroforestry ecosystems. We tested larvae of the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), as host for the parasitoid. We quantified the probability and timing of host attack and parasitism as well as reproductive success, offspring production, and the characteristics of adult offspring. As S. brevicornis is a quasi‐social species (multiple females, communally produced offspring broods), we also explored the effects of varying the number of females to which individual hosts were presented, with the aim of determining the optimal female‐to‐host ratio. As time to host attack can be a limiting factor in S. brevicornis rearing protocols, we tested the use of adult females of another bethylid species, Goniozus legneri Gordh, to paralyse C. cephalonica larvae prior to presentation. We identified the conditions within our experiment that maximized offspring production per host and offspring production per adult female parasitoid. We found that C. cephalonica is suitable as a factitious host and, as it is considerably more straightforward for laboratory rearing than cerambycid species, it is a good candidate for adoption by future S. brevicornis mass‐rearing and release programmes.  相似文献
