The following article was awarded the second-place Reston Prize 1989, sponsored by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the National Association of Schools of Dance, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

In this article, the author explores music education counterforces, examining whether and how (a) federal and state education policies can better address the in-service needs of special area teachers, particularly music teachers, in the school setting; and (b) policy organizations in the music education profession (i.e., The National Association for Music Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, the College Music Society, the Society for Music Teacher Education, and the Music Education Research Council) might also address the inherent tensions between music education and schooling.     

Pedometer-determined physical activity levels of healthy children and children with Down’s syndrome

Purpose: Children with Down’s syndrome (DS) are considered sedentary and less engaged in recommended physical activity (PA) levels. This study compared the PA levels between children with DS and healthy children in Saudi Arabia.

Methods: The study included 85 children divided into two groups. The DS group comprised 37 children with DS aged 8–12?years recruited from the Down Syndrome Charitable Association and Al-Nahda Schools for DS. The healthy group comprised 41 healthy children aged 8–12?years recruited from regular schools in the same region. PA levels were measured over 7?days using a pedometer.

Results: The healthy group was more active than the DS group (p?p?p?Conclusions: The DS group had a high body mass index and physical inactivity compared with the second group. Obesity and physical inactivity among Saudi Arabian children with and without DS are major health concerns. Therefore, concerted efforts are needed to combat childhood obesity, promote PA, improve patient quality of life, and reduce the sedentary lifestyle among Saudi children and adolescents.     

Diez recomendaciones para mejorar la enseñanza de la Geriatría en el pregrado

IntroductionPopulation ageing and scientific progress have made specific training in Geriatrics essential for any medical students. There are different international recommendations on the teaching of Geriatric Medicine at undergraduate level, but they are still far from being offered systematically. The aim of this work was to develop a National list of recommendations in order to improve training in Geriatric Medicine at the undergraduate level.Material and methodsA list of 10 recommendations was produced by reflecting on the Geriatric training situation in Spain in 2016/2017 and international recommendations. Consensus was reached among the members of the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SEGG) working group on «Geriatric training at undergraduate level» through 2 meetings and online discussions.ResultsA list of 10 of recommendations on Geriatric training in Spanish Medical Schools is proposed, including areas such as, the status of the discipline in the curriculum, length, contents, practical training, lecturers, teaching methods, and innovation.ConclusionsThese recommendations are intended to improve Geriatrics training. They can be used by different Medical Schools either to adapt their programs or to start training in Geriatric Medicine.

Encuesta sobre innovación en la docencia de Geriatría en las Facultades de Medicina españolas

ObjectiveTo identify the innovations in teaching of Geriatrics at the Spanish Medical Schools.MethodologyInterviews with those responsible for Geriatrics teaching at the Spanish Medical Schools through a short online survey. Existing Geriatrics curricula and responsible professors were identified by reviewing the curricula of the different Medical Schools.Results35 of the 42 Medical Schools incorporated teaching in Geriatrics in 2019 with an answer rate of 94.3%. Regarding Geriatrics training it stand out classic methods (master classes, clinical rotations, and theoretical seminars), followed by innovation of teaching programs (clinical simulation and use of new technologies). While OSCE and portfolio stand out among the innovative evaluation tools of Geriatrics teaching. Of the 33 Medical Schools with Geriatrics teaching surveyed, 60.6% of them included the use of at least one innovative teaching or evaluation methodology.ConclusionsAlthough the classical model predominates as a teaching methodology in Geriatrics, different innovations are also used in the undergraduate teaching in Spain. It is necessary to continue working in this area that may help a better level of skills in Geriatrics for our students.

Polymorphisms in the MTHFR and MTR genes and the risk of varicose veins in ethnical Russians

Objectives: The objective of this study was to study the association of polymorphisms MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) and MTR A2756G (rs1805087) with the risk of varicose veins in ethnical Russians.

Methods: We genotyped 475 patients with varicose veins, 168 individual without chronic venous disease, and the population-based group of 896 subjects. Association was studied using logistic regression analysis adopting co-dominant, additive, recessive, and dominant models of inheritance.

Results: None of the polymorphisms showed a statistically significant association with the risk of varicose veins.

Conclusions: Our results provide evidence that the studied polymorphisms do not contribute to genetic susceptibility to varicose veins in ethnical Russians.     

Two new Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes from humid tropic forest litter

Abstract

Two Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes, Beltraniella lyrata and Beltraniopsis fabularis, found on tropical forest litter in the Tai National Park in Ivory Coast are proposed as new species and described.     

Liver-specific lysosomal acid phosphatase deficiency (Apl) on mouse chromosome 17

Summary Apl, a gene involved in the processing of lysosomal acid phosphatase in mouse liver, has been mapped on Chromosome 17. The gene order and map distances in per cent recombination of the loci studied are T (20.6±3.4) Pgk-2 (7.4±2.2) Apl. Thus, Apl is at least 7 cM distal to H-2 on this chromosome. In addition, strain-specific allelic variants for Apl have been demonstrated on cellulose acetate gels, a quick and inexpensive method of electrophoresis.This work was supported by Contract NO1-ES42159 with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Grant 1–476 from the National Foundation, March of Dimes, and Grant GM 20919 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Why do extracurricular activities prevent dropout more effectively in some high schools than in others? A mixed-method examination of organizational dynamics

Abstract

This study describes policies and practices implemented in 12 high schools (Quebec, Canada) that more or less effectively leveraged extracurricular activities (ECA) to prevent dropout among vulnerable students. Following an explanatory sequential mixed design, three school profiles (Effective, Ineffective, and Mixed) were derived based on quantitative student-reported data. Qualitative interviews with frontline staff revealed that in Effective schools, ECA had a unique overarching goal: to support school engagement and perseverance among all students, including vulnerable ones. Moreover, in these schools staff had access to sufficient resources—human and material—and implemented inclusive practices. In Ineffective schools, ECA were used as a means to attract well-functioning students from middle-class families, and substantial resources were channeled toward these students, with few efforts to include vulnerable ones. Schools with a Mixed profile had both strengths and weakness. Recommendations for school-level policies that bolster ECA’s ability to support students’ perseverance are provided.     

Dos especies nuevas de <Emphasis Type="Italic">Borreria</Emphasis> (Rubiaceae), un nuevo registro de <Emphasis Type="Italic">Declieuxia</Emphasis> y observaciones taxonómicas

Two new species of Borreria are described: the first, Borreria johnwoodii from the Campo Cerrado area of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park; the second, Borreria siberiana from the cloud forest of the Yungas, between 2600 and 3100 m above sea level. Declieuxia cordigera is recorded for the first time from Bolivia. Borreria nectarifera is shown to be synonymous with B. eryngioides var. affinis.     

In vitro culture of tissue from the tunicateStyela clava

Summary Pharyngeal explants and circulatory hemocytes from the tunicateStyela clava were cultured in a medium containing tunicate plasma, artificial seawater, RPMI 1640, and antibiotics. Pharnngeal tissue remained viable and proliferated for up to 72 d in vitro. Proliferative activity maintained the pool of hemocytes within explants and facilitated the migration of pharyngeal hemocytes from explants into culture supernatants. The diversity of morphologically distinct cell types within the hemocyte pool of pharyngeal cultures indicated that cell division was followed by regulated differentiation. In contrast to pharyngeal cultures, suspensions of circulatory hemocytes did not survive for prolonged periods in vitro. Proliferative activity could not be detected in circulatory hemocyte cultures. These results are discussed in terms of the differentiation state of hemocytes and the efficacy of culture conditions. Two new tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) from southern Ecuador

Two new species ofCyathea are described,C. obnoxia andC. plicata, from the vicinity of Podocarpus National Park in the Provinces Loja and Zamora-Chinchipe, Ecuador.     

Cross-linking/mass spectrometry as a new field and the proteomics information mountain of tomorrow

The European Proteomics Association (EuPA) 2012 Scientific Congress ‘New Horizons and Applications for Proteomics’, hosted by the British Society for Proteome Research (BSPR)

Cross-linking/mass spectrometry ended decades of method developments and entered the era of applications at this year’s European Proteomics Association meeting. The train has started moving, with successful applications of this tool by multiple pioneering laboratories addressing biological and structural problems. Proteomics, on the other side, sees ever increasing data volumes, leading to questions as to how to store the data mountain publically, use it and convert it into testable hypotheses. The European Proteomics Association meeting has been complementary to the American Society for Mass Spectrometry meeting in many ways, also thanks to its more manageable size and the vision of the organizers in inviting some of Europe’s best emerging minds.
