We tested the hypothesis that the age-related decline in maximal aerobic capacity, as measured by maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2 max)), is greater in Hispanic than in Caucasian women. We studied 146 healthy sedentary women aged 20-75 yr: 53 Hispanic (primarily of Mexican descent) and 93 Caucasian (non-Hispanic white). The groups did not differ in mean age, body mass, percent body fat, estimated physical activity-related energy expenditure, or education-based socioeconomic status (SES). During maximal exercise, respiratory exchange ratio, rating of perceived exertion, and percent predicted maximal heart rate were similar across age and ethnicity, suggesting equivalent maximum voluntary efforts in all subjects. VO(2 max) (ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) was inversely related to age (P < 0.01) in Caucasian (r =-0.68) and Hispanic (r = -0.61) women. The absolute rate of decline in VO(2 max) with age was the same in the two groups (-0.31 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) x yr(-1)). The relative rate of decline (% from age 25 yr) also was similar in the Caucasian (-9.0%) and Hispanic (-9.2%) women. When subjects of all ages were pooled, mean levels of VO(2 max) were similar in the two groups (approximately 28 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)). These results, the first to our knowledge in Hispanics, indicate that mean levels of VO(2 max), as well as the rate of decline in VO(2 max) with age, are similar in healthy sedentary Hispanic and Caucasian women of similar SES. Thus it does not appear that Hispanic ethnicity per se modulates maximal aerobic capacity in this population.  相似文献

Fifty-five male runners aged between 30 to 80 years were examined to determine the relative roles of various cardiovascular parameters which may account for the decrease in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) with aging. All subjects had similar body fat composition and trained for a similar mileage each week. The parameters tested were VO2max, maximal heart rate (HRmax), cardiac output (Q), and arteriovenous difference in oxygen concentration (Ca-Cv)O2 during graded, maximal treadmill running. Average body fat and training mileage were roughly 12% and 50 km.week-1, respectively. The average 10-km run-time slowed significantly by 6.0%.decade-1 [( 10-km run-time (min) = 0.323 x age (years) + 24.4] (n = 49, r = 0.692, p less than 0.001]. A strong correlation was found between age and VO2max [( VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1) = -0.439 x age + 76.5] (n = 55, r = -0.768, p less than 0.001]. Thus, VO2max decreased by 6.9%.decade-1 along with reductions of HRmax (3.2%.decade-1, p less than 0.001) and Q (5.8%.decade-1, p less than 0.001), while no significant change with age was observed in estimated (Ca-Cv)O2. It was concluded that the decline of VO2max with aging in runners was mainly explained by the central factors (represented by the decline of HR and Q in this study), rather than by the peripheral factor (represented by (Ca-Cv)O2).  相似文献

Despite many reports of long-lasting elevation of metabolism after exercise, little is known regarding the effects of exercise intensity and duration on this phenomenon. This study examined the effect of a constant duration (30 min) of cycle ergometer exercise at varied intensity levels [50 and 70% of maximal O2 consumption (VO2max)] on 3-h recovery of oxygen uptake (VO2). VO2 and respiratory exchange ratios were measured by open-circuit spirometry in five trained female cyclists (age 25 +/- 1.7 yr) and five untrained females (age 27 +/- 0.8 yr). Postexercise VO2 measured at intervals for 3 h after exercise was greater (P less than 0.01) after exercise at 50% VO2max in trained (0.40 +/- 0.01 l/min) and untrained subjects (0.39 +/- 0.01 l/min) than after 70% VO2max in (0.31 +/- 0.02 l/min) and untrained subjects (0.29 +/- 0.02 l/min). The lower respiratory exchange ratio values (P less than 0.01) after 50% VO2max in trained (0.78 +/- 0.01) and untrained subjects (0.80 +/- 0.01) compared with 70% VO2max in trained (0.81 +/- 0.01) and untrained subjects (0.83 +/- 0.01) suggest that an increase in fat metabolism may be implicated in the long-term elevation of metabolism after exercise. This was supported by the greater estimated fatty acid oxidation (P less than 0.05) after 50% VO2max in trained (147 +/- 4 mg/min) and untrained subjects (133 +/- 9 mg/min) compared with 70% VO2max in trained (101 +/- 6 mg/min) and untrained subjects (85 +/- 7 mg/min).  相似文献

Effect of prior exercise on maximal short-term power output in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of prior exercise (PE) on subsequent maximal short-term power output (STPO) was examined during cycling exercise on an isokinetic ergometer. In the first series of experiments the duration of PE at a power output equivalent to 98% maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) was varied between 0.5 and 6 min before measurement of maximal STPO. As PE duration increased subsequent STPO fell to approximately 70% of control values after 3-6 min. In series ii the effect of varying the intensity of PE of fixed 6-min duration was studied in five subjects. After PE less than 60% VO2max there was an increase of 12% in STPO, but after greater than 60% VO2max there was a progressive fall in STPO as PE intensity increased, indicating a reduction of approximately 35% at 100% VO2max compared with control values. In series iii we examined the effect on STPO of allowing a recovery period after a fixed intensity (mean = 87% VO2max) of 6 min PE before measurement of STPO. This indicated a rapid recovery of dynamic function with a half time of approximately 32 s, which is similar to the kinetics of PC resynthesis and taken with the other findings suggests the dominant role that PC exerts on the STPO under these conditions.  相似文献

In two experiments maximal aerobic power (VO2max) calculated from maximal mechanical power (Wmax) was evaluated in 39 children aged 9-11 years. A maximal multi-stage cycle ergometer exercise test was used with an increase in work load every 3 min. In the first experiment oxygen consumption was measured in 18 children during each of the prescribed work loads and a correction factor was calculated to estimate VO2max using the equation VO2max = 12.Wmax + 5.weight. An appropriate increase in work rate based on height was determined for boys (0.16 W.cm-1) and girls (0.15 W.cm-1) respectively. In the second experiment 21 children performed a maximal cycle ergometer exercise test twice. In addition to the procedure in the first experiment a similar exercise test was performed, but without measurement of oxygen uptake. Calculated VO2max correlated significantly (p less than 0.01) with those values measured in both boys (r = 0.90) and girls (r = 0.95) respectively, and the standard error of estimation for VO2max (calculated) on VO2max (measured) was less than 3.2%. Two expressions of relative work load (%VO2max and %Wmax) were established and found to be closely correlated. The relative work load in %VO2max could be predicted from the relative work load in %Wmax with an average standard error of 3.8%. The data demonstrate that calculated VO2max based on a maximal multi-stage exercise test provides an accurate and valid estimate of VO2max.  相似文献

To determine the cardiorespiratory response to maximal exercise before, during and after the pubescent growth spurt, thirty boys were tested at yearly intervals over a period of six consecutive years. For each individual, peak height velocity (PHV) was determined. The age at PHV (X = 13.6 years) was taken as a standard of maturation. The results from all subjects at 1.5 and 0.5 years before and 0.5 and 1.5 years after PHV are presented. The highest oxygen uptake (VO2) obtained during an incremental bicycle ergometer test to voluntary exhaustion was taken as peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak). Across each of the four years studied, mean VO2 peak (min = 49.6; max = 52.5 ml.kg-1.min-1) and mean heart rate (HR) at VO2 peak (min = 190; max = 192) did not change significantly as a function of PHV. On the other hand, the respiratory quotient at VO2 peak increased considerably from mean minima and maxima of 0.99 and 1.01 before PHV to 1.07 and 1.10 after PHV. Ventilatory equivalent for VO2 (VE/VO2), taken as an indicator of ventilatory economy, seemed to be unaffected by the maturation process. The steepest increase in circumpubertal oxygen pulse was found one year after PHV. Average stability coefficients (r), calculated from the inter-years correlations were high for height (r = 0.95), weight (r = 0.92), HR at VO2 peak (r = 0.74), VO2 peak in 1/min (r = 0.71), oxygen pulse (r = 0.68) and tidal volume (r = 0.64).  相似文献

The maximal oxygen uptake (Vo2 max) and ergometer load at a heart rate of 170 beats/min (PWC170) were determined in mentally retarded children (74 boys and 53 girls) of ages 12-15, whose IQ ranged from 36 to 91, and the results were compared with those for normal children. Mentally retarded boys and girls showed significantly inferior body height and weight, but no significant difference was found in skinfold thickness. The mean value of PWC170 for boys and girls was 14.34 kpm/kg/min and 11.31 kpm/kg/min, respectively, significantly less than that of the normal group. The mentally retarded boys had mean VO2 max per unit body weight of 42.4 ml/kg/min, which was significantly less than the 51.2 ml/kg/min of normal boys. The mentally retarded girls had a mean of 33.1 ml/kg/min which was also less than the 41.3 ml/kg/min of normal girls. The correlation coefficient between body weight and PWC170 (kpm/min) was 0.711 and 0.720 for boys and girls, respectively, while that between body weight and VO2 max (liter/min) was 0.641 for boys and 0.656 for girls. No significant correlation was found between IQ and PWC170 (kpm/kg/min) nor between IQ and VO2 max (ml/kg/min) both for boys and for girls. Similarly, no significant correlation was found between mental age and the VO2 max value (ml/kg/min).  相似文献

A statistically significant 10% increase (p less than 0.005) in mean red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) concentration, concomitantly with a mean 16% increase (p less than 0.001) in the predicted maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was observed in 29 recruits, who were studied during 6 months of physical training in military service. The increase in 2,3-DPG was higher, the lower the initial 2,3-DPG and VO2max levels. The mean initial 2,3-DPG level was higher in the subjects with a higher initial VO2max. A strenuous but highly aerobic 21-km marching exercise elicited a mean 9% increase (p less than 0.005) in red cell 2,3-DPG concentration. A significantly greater response of 2,3-DPG to marching exercise was observed in subjects with a lower pre-test VO2max than in those with a higher pre-test VO2max. During another more competitive march 2,3-DPG remained almost unchanged and was associated with a tendency towards a negative correlation with the acccompanying lactate response (r = -0.60, p less than 0.05). Red cell 2,3-DPG response to a standardized exercise is considered to be a suitable indicator for evaluating the effect of training on an individual.  相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to assess the validity of the Cosmed Fitmate (FM) for the prediction of maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2)max). In addition, this study examined whether measuring submaximal VO(2), rather than predicting it, can improve upon the prediction of VO(2)max. Participants for the study were 48 young to middle-age adults (32 men, 16 women), with a mean age of 31 yr. Each participant completed a submaximal and maximal treadmill test on 2 separate occasions. During the submaximal test, VO(2)max was predicted using the FM. This device extrapolates the linear regression relating heart rate (HR) and measured VO(2) at submaximal work rates to age-predicted maximum HR (HR = 220 - age). The criterion measure was obtained using a graded, maximal treadmill test, with VO(2) measured by the Douglas bag (DB) method. There was no significant difference between VO(2)max predicted by the FM and VO(2)max measured by the DB method. The results of this study showed that a strong positive correlation (r = 0.897) existed between VO(2)max predicted by the FM and VO(2)max measured by the DB method, with a standard error of the estimate (SEE) = 3.97 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1). There was a significant difference in VO(2)max predicted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) metabolic equations and VO(2)max measured by the DB method (p = 0.01). The correlation between these variables was r = 0.758 (SEE = 5.26 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)). These findings indicate that a small, portable, and easy-to-use metabolic system provides valid estimates of VO(2)max, and improves upon predictive accuracy, compared to using generalized ACSM metabolic equations.  相似文献

Endurance training of older men: responses to submaximal exercise.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The purpose of this study was to quantify the exercise response of older subjects on a time-to-fatigue (TTF) submaximal performance test before and after a training program. Eight older men (67.4 +/- 4.8 yr) performed two maximal treadmill tests to determine maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and ventilation threshold (TVE) and a constant-load submaximal exercise treadmill test that required an oxygen uptake (VO2) between TVE and VO2max. The submaximal test, performed at the same absolute work rate before and after the training program, was performed to volitional fatigue to measure endurance time. The men trained under supervision at an individualized pace representing approximately 70% of VO2max (80% maximum heart rate) for 1 h, four times per week for 9 wk. Significant increases were demonstrated for VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1; 10.6%); maximal ventilation (VE, l/min; 11.6%), and TVE (l/min; 9.8%). Weight decreased 2.1%. Performance time on the TTF test increased by 180% (7.3 +/- 3.0 to 20.4 +/- 13.5 min). The similar end points for VO2, VE, and heart rate during the TTF and maximal treadmill tests established that the TTF test was stopped because of physiological limitations. The increase in performance time among the subjects was significantly correlated with improvements in VO2max and TVE, with the submaximal work rate representing a VO2 above TVE by 88% of the difference between TVE and VO2max pretraining and 73% of this difference on posttraining values.  相似文献

Six trained male cyclists and six untrained but physically active men participated in this study to test the hypothesis that the use of percentage maximal oxygen consumption (%VO2max) as a normalising independent variable is valid despite significant differences in the absolute VO2max of trained and untrained subjects. The subjects underwent an exercise test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer to determine VO2max and lactate threshold. The subjects were grouped as trained (T) if their VO2max exceeded 60 ml.kg-1.min-1, and untrained (UT) if their VO2max was less than 50 ml.kg-1.min-1. The subjects were required to exercise on the ergometer for up to 40 min at power outputs that corresponded to approximately 50% and 70% VO2max. The allocation of each exercise session (50% or 70% VO2max) was random and each session was separated by at least 5 days. During these tests venous blood was taken 10 min before exercise (- 10 min), just prior to the commencement of exercise (0 min), after 20 min of exercise (20 min), at the end of exercise and 10 min postexercise (+ 10 min) and analysed for concentrations of cortisol, [Na+], [K+], [Cl-], glucose, free fatty acid, lactate [la-], [NH3], haemoglobin [Hb] and for packed cell volume. The oxygen consumption (VO2) and related variables were measured at two time intervals (14-15 and 34-35 min) during the prolonged exercise tests. Rectal temperature was measured throughout both exercise sessions. There was a significant interaction effect between the level of training and exercise time at 50% VO2max for heart rate (fc) and venous [la-].(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Familial resemblance in maximal heart rate, blood lactate and aerobic power   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are considerable interindividual differences in maximal oxygen uptake per kilogram of body weight (VO2 max/kg), maximal heart rate (max HR) and maximal blood lactate (max blood La) measured during a progressive exercise test. The aim of the study was to quantify the familial relationships for these variables. Parents and children of 38 families of French-Canadian descent were submitted to a modified Balke treadmill test. VO2 max/kg and max HR were the highest values reached during the test for 1 min. Max blood La was obtained from a blood sample taken 2 min after the test. The effects of age and sex were significant for max blood La and VO2 max/kg in each generation. Scores were thus adjusted through multiple regression procedures (age + sex + age X sex + age2), yielding residuals which were submitted to further analysis. Intraclass correlations (ri) were significant in pairs of sibs for max blood La and max HR, i.e. 0.28 (p less than 0.01) and 0.43 (p less than 0.05), respectively. For VO2 max/kg, pairs of spouses and sibs were about similarly correlated (ri = 0.20 and 0.15; p less than 0.05). Data suggested that children were more related to their mother than to their father for VO2 max/kg, VO2 max/kg of fat-free weight, and particularly for max HR. It was concluded that familial resemblance and heritability estimates for maximal aerobic power, max HR and max blood La were quite low and generally nonsignificant. Correlations between biological sibs were, however, consistently significant for max HR and max blood La. The suggestion of a maternal effect in maximal aerobic power should be further investigated.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the cardiorespiratory capacity of Thai male and female blue-collar workers in different age and occupational categories. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) of 70 men and 56 women was assessed using a submaximal bicycle-ergometer test supplemented with ventilatory gas analyses. The age of the subjects varied from 16 to 55 years. They worked in construction, manual materials handling and metal jobs. For the male subjects the VO2 max ranged from 1.43 to 3.50 l/min and from 21.3 to 66.3 ml/min/kg. The corresponding values for the female subjects were 0.97-2.97 l/min and 16.2-42.4 ml/min/kg. According to the European fitness classifications the mean age related VO2max of the male and female subjects can be considered moderate or poor. When compared to the European data heart rate of the subjects was 25-30% higher at submaximal levels of oxygen uptake, confirming earlier results. The low cardiorespiratory capacity of many Thai workers may be a limiting or even risk factor in physically demanding jobs.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the lactate threshold (Tlac) during incremental exercise could be increased significantly during the first 3 wk of endurance training without any concomitant change in the ventilatory threshold (Tvent). Tvent is defined as O2 uptake (VO2) at which ventilatory equivalent for O2 [expired ventilation per VO2 (VE/VO2)] increased without a simultaneous increase in the ventilatory equivalent for CO2 (VE/VCO2). Weekly measurements of ventilatory gas exchange and blood lactate responses during incremental and steady-rate exercise were performed on six subjects (4 male; 2 female) who exercised 6 days/wk, 30 min/session at 70-80% of pretraining VO2max for 3 wk. Pretraining Tlac and Tvent were not significantly different. After 3 wk of training, significant increases (P less than 0.05) occurred for mean (+/- SE) VO2max (392 +/- 103 ml/min) and Tlac (482 +/- 135 ml/min). Tvent did not change during the 3 wk of training, despite significant (P less than 0.05) reductions in VE responses to both incremental and steady-rate exercise. Thus ventilatory adaptations to exercise during the first 3 wk of exercise training were not accompanied by a detectable alteration in the ventilatory "threshold" during a 1-min incremental exercise protocol. The mean absolute difference between pairs of Tlac and Tvent posttraining was 499 ml/min. Despite the significant training-induced dissociation between Tlac and Tvent a high correlation between the two parameters was obtained posttraining (r = 0.86, P less than 0.05). These results indicate a coincidental rather than causal relationship.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study determined whether marked hyperthermia alone or in combination with dehydration reduces the initial rate of rise in O(2) consumption (VO(2) on-kinetics) and the maximal rate of O(2) uptake (VO(2 max)) during intense cycling exercise. Six endurance-trained male cyclists completed four maximal cycle ergometer exercise tests (402 +/- 4 W) when euhydrated or dehydrated (4% body wt) with normal (starting esophageal temperature, 37.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C; mean skin temperature, approximately 31 degrees C) or elevated (+1 and +6 degrees C, respectively) thermal strain. In the euhydrated and normal condition, subjects reached VO(2 max) (4.7 +/- 0.2 l/min) in 228 +/- 34 s, with a mean response time of 42 +/- 2 s, and fatigued after 353 +/- 39 s. Hyperthermia alone or in combination with dehydration reduced mean response time (17-23%), VO(2 max) (16%), and performance time (51-53%) (all P < 0.01) but did not alter the absolute response time (i.e., the time to reach 63% response in the control trial, 3.2 +/- 0.1 l/min, 42 s). Reduction in VO(2 max) was accompanied by proportional decline in O(2) pulse and significantly elevated maximal heart rate (195 vs. 190 beats/min for hyperthermia vs. normal). Preventing hyperthermia in dehydrated subjects restored VO(2 max) and performance time by 65 and 50%, respectively. These results demonstrate that impaired high-intensity exercise performance with marked skin and internal body hyperthermia alone or in combination with dehydration is not associated with a diminished rate of rise in VO(2) but decreased VO(2 max).  相似文献

Aerobic performance of female marathon and male ultramarathon athletes.   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The aerobic performance of thirteen male ultramarathon and nine female marathon runners were studied in the laboratory and their results were related to their times in events ranging in distance from 5 km to 84.64 km. The mean maximal aerobic power output (VO2 max) of the men was 72.5 ml/kg . min compared with 58.2 ml/kg . min (p less than 0.001) in the women but the O2 cost (VO2) for a given speed or distance of running was the same in both sexes. The 5 km time of the male athletes was closely related to their VO2 max (r = -0.85) during uphill running but was independent of relative power output (%VO2 max). However, with increasing distance the association of VO2 max with male athletic performance diminished (but nevertheless remained significant even at 84.64 km), and the relationship between %VO2 max and time increased. Thus, using multiple regression analysis of the form: 42.2 km (marathon) time (h) = 7.445 - 0.0338 VO2 max (ml/kg . min) - 0.0303% VO2 max (r = 0.993) and 84.64 km (London-Brighton) time (h) = 16.998 - 0.0735 VO2 max (ml/kg . min) - 0.0844% VO2 max (r = 0.996) approximately 98% of the total variance of performance times could be accounted for in the marathon and ultramarathon events. This suggests that other factors such as footwear, clothing, and running technique (Costill, 1972) play a relatively minor role in this group of male distance runners. In the female athletes the intermediate times were not available and they did not compete beyond 42.2 km (marathon) distance but for this event a similar association though less in magnitude was found with VO2 max (r = -0.43) and %VO2 max (= -0.49). The male athletes were able to sustain 82% VO2 max (range 80--87%) in 42.2 km and 67% VO2 max (range 53--76%) in 84.64 km event. The comparable figure for the firls in the marathon was 79% VO2 max (ranges 68--86%). Our data suggests that success at the marathon and ultramarathon distances is crucially and (possibly) solely dependent on the development and utilisation of a large VO2 max.  相似文献

Six trained male cyclists and six untrained sedentary men were studied to determine whether the plasma lactate threshold (PLT) and ventilation threshold (VT) occur at the same work rate in both fit and unfit populations. The PLT was determined from a marked increase in plasma lactate concentration ([La]) and VT from a nonlinear increase in expired minute ventilation (VE) during incremental leg-cycling tests; work rate was increased 30 W every 2 min until volitional exhaustion. The trained subjects' mean VO2 max (63.8 ml O2 X kg-1 X min-1) and VT (65.8% VO2 max) were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than the untrained subjects' mean VO2max (35.5 ml O2 X kg-1 X min-1) and VT (51.4% VO2 max). The trained subjects' mean PLT (68.8% VO2 max) and VT did not differ significantly, but the untrained subjects' mean PLT (61.6% VO2 max) was significantly higher than their VT. The trained subjects' mean peak [La] (10.5 mmol X l-1) did not differ significantly from the untrained subjects' mean peak [La] (11.5 mmol X l-1). However, the time of appearance of the peak [La] during passive recovery was inversely related to VO2 max. These results suggest that variance in lactate diffusion and/or removal processes between the trained and untrained subjects may account in part for the different relationships between the VT and PLT in each population.  相似文献
