Sexual expression in hermaphroditic plants is often a function of environmental factors affecting individuals before or during flowering. I tested for the effects of floral herbivory and lack of pollination in early umbels on the relative proportions of hermaphroditic and staminate (male) flowers produced on later umbels by Sanicula arctopoides, a monocarpic, andromonoecious perennial. Neither floral herbivory or lack of early pollination had a significant effect on the ratio of the two floral morphs, but the probability of producing staminate flowers on late umbels was strongly and positively related to plant size measured just prior to floral initiation and prior to herbivory. Plant size was also negatively correlated with flowering date. I suggest that producing staminate flowers on late umbels should benefit large early-blooming plants more than small late-blooming plants because more mating opportunities occur during the period when these flowers release pollen. Although herbivory did not cause labile changes of sex, whole plant phenotypic gender was still strongly affected by various forms of treatment. Sex-biased herbivory or lack of pollination rendered plants more or less phenotypically male, depending on which tissues were affected. Deer and pollen-feeding mites preferentially remove male tissues while hymenopteran seed predators preferentially remove female tissues. I conclude that combinations of herbivores could have counteracting or compounding effects on plant gender, and these effects may change the rankings of male and female reproductive success within populations. Summary Populations of Lomatium grayi (Umbelliferae), an andromonoecious, perennial herb, differe in growth rates, flowering frequency, and survivorship. Effects of these different life histories on the ontogeny of sex expression were analyzed for plants from two populations grown from seedlings in a common garden and monitored for six years. Plants from Smoot Hill, Washington grew faster, had a higher probability of flowering at each age and size after the first year of growth, and a higher probability of flowering repeatedly among years than did plants from Clarkston, Washington. The proportion of plants producing some hermaphroditic flowers increased with plant size in both populations. Smoot Hill plants, however, were more likely to begin flowering as small, staminate plants than Clarkston plants. Clarkston plants did not begin flowering until they were older and larger, and most of these plants produced some hermaphroditic flowers when they began reproduction. The positive association between production of hermaphroditic flowers and both plant size and age was consistent with the hypothesis that hermaphroditic flowers are more costly to produce than staminate flowers.Although the populations did not differ in the total number of flowers per plant produced at any age or size, Smoot Hill plants consistently produced a lower percentage of hermaphroditic flowers than Clarkston plants at larger sizes and later ages. Consequently, selection for faster growth rates and higher flowering frequency at small sizes and early ages may have favored the more staminate-biased sex ratios in the Smoot Hill population.  相似文献

The evolution of large floral displays in hermaphroditic flowering plants has been attributed to natural selection acting to enhance male, rather than female, reproductive success. Proponents of the “pollen-donation hypothesis” have assumed that maternal resources, rather than levels of effective pollination, limit fruit set. We investigated the pollen-donation hypothesis in an experimental population of poke milkweed, Asclepias exaltata, where effective pollination did not limit fruit set. Specifically, we examined the effects of flower number per plant, and flower number per umbel on male reproductive success (number of fruits sired) and female reproductive success (number of fruits matured). In 1990, a paternity analysis was performed on fruits collected from 53 plants whose inflorescences were not manipulated. Flower number per plant was significantly correlated with male success, but not with plant gender. Flower number per plant was also significantly correlated with female success, but umbel number and stem number per plant together explained more than half (58%) the variation in female success. The percentage of fruit set was not significantly correlated with flower number per plant. Plants with large floral displays did not disproportionately increase in male reproductive success, relative to female success, as predicted by the pollen-donation hypothesis. In 1991, the effect of flower number per umbel on male and female reproductive success was investigated. Flower number per umbel was manipulated on four umbels per plant by removing flowers to leave 6, 12, or 18 flowers in each umbel. Plants with the largest umbels effectively pollinated twice as many flowers on other plants, but produced only 1.35 times as many fruits as plants with 6 and 12 flowers per umbel. Relative maleness of plants with large umbels was nearly twice that of small and medium umbels. Although these observations are consistent with the pollen-donation hypothesis at the level of umbels, they are problematic, because much of the variation in flower number per umbel exists within, rather than among, plants in natural populations. Thus, plants consist of both reproductively male (large) and female (small) inflorescences, which act to increase total reproductive success. It is therefore inappropriate to explain the evolution of large floral displays in milkweeds solely in terms of potential male reproductive success.  相似文献

We examined the effects of self-pollination and resource addition to maternal plants of Wild Lupine on seed production in the field, and on offspring performance in the greenhouse. Although 24% of flowers set fruits when open-pollinated, only 11% of flowers set fruits when self-pollinated. Self-pollination significantly reduced fruit and seed production per inflorescence and increased aborted seeds per fruit. Resource addition to maternal plants significantly increased fruit and seed number in the field. Moreover, selfed plants exhibited greater variability in seed production in the absence of resource addition to the maternal plant. We planted a total of 1,306 of the seeds from this experiment in the greenhouse. While self-pollination did not affect the proportion of seeds emerging, it slowed seedling emergence by 5–10%, and reduced offspring biomass by 25–35%. Interestingly, resource addition to the maternal plants significantly decreased proportion of seedlings surviving after 5 months. Moreover, offspring from maternal plants with resource addition expressed more inbreeding depression in the seedling stage compared to offspring from maternal plants without resource addition, for which more inbreeding depression occurred during seed maturation and emergence. These results indicate that conservation efforts using benign environments to increase number of seeds or offspring may face compensating reductions in survivorship at other life stages.  相似文献

Summary The ability of the biennial herb, Pastinaca sativa L. (wild parsnip), to respond to and compensate for destruction of primary umbel seeds by the larvae of Depressaria pastinacella (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae) was analyzed by comparing umbel and seed production of damaged and undamaged plants collected from five populations. Plants with a basal stem diameter smaller than 8 mm suffer a reduction in seed set of about 50% when the primary umbel is destroyed but larger plants are able to compensate for loss of primary umbel seeds by increased seed set of tertiary umbels. Depending on plant size, this is due to either an increase in the number of tertiary umbels that reach maturity or an increase in the number of seeds per tertiary umbel. Although seeds of tertiary umbels are significantly smaller than those of primary or secondary umbels, their viability is equivalent to that of secondary seeds and may be greater than that of primary seeds. Characteristics of P. sativa's reproduction, such as the long flowering period and the initiation of more umbels than the plant is normally able to bring to maturity, are important to P. sativa's ability to compensate for the effects of herbivore damage.  相似文献

Summary We experimentally examined factors limiting seed production in two populations of the perennial woodland herb Geranium maculatum in central Illinois, USA. To test the pollinator-limitation hypothesis, we compared the seed production of plants whose flowers were supplementarily pollinated with outcross pollen to that of control plants receiving natural pollination only. To test if fruit production by early flowers suppresses fruit and seed formation by late flowers, a third group of plants was prevented from producing seed from the first 50% of the flowers to open (stigmas were excised at flower opening). Finally, to test if seed maturation and flower initiation are correlated with photosynthetic capacity, we performed a defoliation experiment in which either the stem leaves within the inflorescence, the stem leaves below the inflorescence, or the rosette leaves were removed during late flowering. Plants that reccived supplemental pollination produced 1.5–1.6 times more seeds than control plants. We found no difference between hand-pollinated plants and controls in mortality, flowering frequency or number of flowers produced in the year following the experiment. In both control and hand-pollinated plants, the fruit set and total seed production of early flowers were more than twice as high as those of late flowers. In one of the two populations, plants whose early flowers were prevented from setting seed produced significantly more seeds from their late flowers than did control plants. Seed predation was low and did not differ between early and late flowers. Leaf removal did not affect seed number or size in the year of defoliation, nor did it reduce survival or flower production in the subsequent year. This suggests that the plants were able to compensate for a partial defoliation by using stored resources or by increasing photosynthetic rates in the remaining leaves. Taken together, the results demonstrate that both pollinator activity and resource levels influence patterns of seed production in G. maculatum. While seed production was pollinatorlimited in both populations, a seasonal decline in resource availability was apparently responsible for the low seed production by late flowers.  相似文献

The phenology, major floral characteristics, fruiting levels, and breeding system ofCistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae), a common western Mediterranean shrub species, were studied in a southern Spanish population. The white, large (64 mm in diameter) flowers of this shrub appear during spring (March–May) and produce abundant pollen and nectar. In the year of study, flowers lasted up to three days, during which they were visited by a diverse array of insects including beetles, flies, and bees. Hand-pollinations revealed that flowers do not set any seed unless cross pollen is applied to the stigma. Microscopical observations indicate that self pollen tubes grow down the stigma but invariably fail to induce fruit maturation. At the plant level, all estimates of fecundity investigated (number of seeds per capsule, proportion of ovules developing into seed, and proportion of flowers setting fruit) were highly dependent on nearest neighbour distance, with isolated plants setting as little as 0% fruit. In contrast, plants within a clump often transformed into fruit as much as 90% of the flowers. At the population level, seed output was estimated to range between 3,000 and 270,000 seeds per plant during 1991.  相似文献

The ability of weeds to form a seed bank is important for their population dynamics and management because it provides a refuge enabling reinvasion after established target plants have died. However, knowledge of the differential seed behaviour of individual species over multiple years and varying environmental conditions is surprisingly rare but necessary for effective control of diverse weed populations. We established a seed burial experiment in alpine habitats differing in management regime (i.e., forest, hay meadow and pasture) to determine whether seeds of the unpalatable perennial weeds, Veratrum album (white hellebore) and Gentiana lutea (yellow gentian) were able to delay germination and remain viable over 3 years. Our study shows that both species formed a short-term persistent seed bank; in the third-year, the soil seed banks of both species were nearly depleted, having declined to <5% of their original size. Both species had strikingly different germination strategies: G. lutea seeds mainly germinated in their first-year, whilst the majority of V. album seeds germinated in their second-year. The fraction of dormant G. lutea seeds increased with seed age, indicating that seeds remained viable after forgoing germination in the previous year. Habitat-specific differences in seed germination increased with seed age, with germination fractions being lowest in moist hay meadows. This suggests that the negative effects of anoxic conditions became more pronounced as seeds aged in hay meadows. Conversely, seed dormancy was equal among habitats. The absence of a long-term persistent seed bank has important implications for the management of both nuisance and endangered-plant populations. In the case of V. album and G. lutea, re-colonization of habitats from the seed bank is unlikely after established plants have been removed.  相似文献

Summary Under conditions where resources are limited, there are often negative correlations between components of maternal yield, or between fruit and flower production. Pollination, in turn, may vary among individuals and influence total maternal expenditure. We examined the impact of variation in pollination thoroughness upon yield components and overall plant growth in wild radish (R. raphanistrum) plants grown in the greenhouse. Plants received different pollination treatments in which 0% to 100% of all flowers produced were hand-pollinated. Fruit set was increased by hand-pollination, but rarely exceeded 30%, even when more than 50% of the flowers were pollinated. Plants receiving more thorough pollination or having greater proportion fruit set produced significantly smaller seeds. Seed number per fruit was not influenced by pollination treatment. Mean values of yield components and interactions between components often varied among plants from different maternal families. Increasing pollination thoroughness also resulted in dramatic decreases in flower production. If male fitness is related to flower number, there may be a tradeoff between maternal fecundity and successful pollen export operating at the whole-plant level in this species.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to elucidate the sources of seed size variation in Hydrophyllum appendiculatum, an outcrossing, biennial plant. The genetic basis of seed size variation was examined with a diallel breeding design. The analysis did not reveal any evidence for additive genetic variance, suggesting that seed size could not evolve in response to natural selection. A series of greenhouse experiments was conducted to determine the sensitivity of seed weight to a number of ecological variables. Seed weight was affected by inbreeding depression: seeds produced by self-pollinations were significantly lighter that outcrossed seeds. Maternal plants did not differentially provision seeds that were the result of crosses between subpopulations (separated by 300 m) or between populations (separated by 1.7 km). Mean seed size was independent of the number of outcrossed pollen donors (one vs. many) that sired seeds on an inflorescence; however, the variance was greater on inflorescences pollinated by multiple donors. Direct manipulations of the abiotic environment showed that seed size was greater on plants growing under full sunlight compared to shaded plants. Seed size was unaffected by soil type, fertilizer addition, or defoliation. Finally, I determined the effect of varying pollination intensity at the level of a single inflorescence, and at the whole plant level. Seed weight was greatest on plants that had only 1 and 5 inflorescences pollinated, and least on those that had 10 and 20 pollinated. At the inflorescence level, seed weights were greatest on those where all flowers were pollinated, compared to inflorescences where only half of the flowers were pollinated. Perhaps the greatest contributor to variance in seed size in this species was the temporal decline within plants through the flowering season. These results indicate that maternal plants are not capable of producing uniform seed crops. Rather, the final distribution of seed size produced by plants within a population will necessarily vary and be the result of pollination effects, heterogeneity in the abiotic environment, and developmental constraints.  相似文献

Maximum carrot seed dry weight and maximum endosperm volumewere reached about 35 d after anthesis, although at this timethe endosperm was still soft, the pericarp green and less than50% of the seeds were viable. Fully viable, ripe seeds werenot produced until 44 d later. Seventy per cent of the increasein endosperm volume was due to an increase in cell number, whichceased 35 d after anthesis. The increase in embryo volume wasslower and was due to an increase in both cell number and cellvolume which continued until 49 d after anthesis. At maturitythe embryo was the equivalent of between 2% and 3% of the endospermvolume. The relationship between embryo length and cell number per embryowas unaffected by seed crop plant density, seed crop harvestdate and position of the seed on the mother plant but it wasaffected by the year of seed production, possibly due to differencesin temperature during the period of seed growth. Through immature seed culture and subsequent embryo culture, aneuploid plants were derived from various crosses among 184 different triploid hybrid grape vines. In self-pollinations of the 184 vines, 0 to 1.6% of flowers produced immature seeds. In 16 reciprocal crosses between diploid and triploid and between tetraploid and triploid grapes, 0 to 23.0% of flowers produced immature seeds. The immature seeds excised 30–50 days after pollination were cultured for three months on Nitsch and Nitsch medium supplemented with L-glutamine, L-serine, L-cysteine and casein hydrolysate. Embryos developed within the cultured immature seeds were subcultured onto germination medium consisting of MS medium with 1 μM BA. Thirty-four of 137 embryos from 458 immature seeds germinated. Five of the 34 embryos grew normally. The five recovered plants were aneuploids with chromosome numbers from 51 to 59. The rates of embryo and plant recovery were different in different crosses with triploid grapes. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A comparative study of the reproductive biology of male-sterile and hermaphroditic plants in a gynodioecious population of Iris douglasiana Herb. (Iridaceae) was conducted at the University of California's Marine Laboratory at Bodega Bay, California, between 1976–1979. Each year of the study, there were 11.1% male-sterile plants in the population, some of which began blooming at the same time as the earliest blooming hermaphrodites. Male-sterile flowers made up between 7–21% of the flowers produced during the male-sterile flowering period. Male-sterile flowers had smaller sepals and petals than hermaphrodites, there were fewer of them per square meter, and they had fewer pollinated stigmas than did hermaphroditic flowers. In a test to determine pollinator preference, intact hermaphroditic flowers tended to have more pollinated stigmas than did hermaphrodites with their stamens removed or those flowers with shortened sepals made to resemble the smaller male-sterile flowers. Floral phenology and nectar-flow patterns were similar in both types of flowers as were the kinds of amino acids and sugar rewards in the nectar. Male-sterile flowers, however, produced much less nectar per flower. There were no significant differences in the number of ovules per flower or the number of seeds produced per capsule between the two flower types, but the loss of seeds through larval predation was much greater in capsules from hermaphroditic flowers. Early flowering and setting of seed by plants with male-sterile flowers could give them a reproductive advantage over plants with hermaphroditic flowers which experience higher levels of larval predation later in the growing season.  相似文献

Astragalus australis var. olympicus is an endemic plant of the Olympic Mountains, Washington. It is considered a Species of Concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This study focused on the reproductive biology of the plant from flower production through seed germination to identify possible weak points that might contribute to its rarity and impede its conservation. Most plants produced a large mean number of flowers and ovules (314.8 and 4106, respectively), but relatively few of these formed fruits and seeds (25.8 and 3.8%, respectively). In decreasing importance, ovules in fruits were lost to predation, seed abortion, and lack of fertilization. The percentages of these fates differed among sites and years. Excluding pollinators by bagging flowers reduced fruit set by ∼50%, but seed set per fruit and seed mass were unaffected. Germination was affected by scarification, temperature, and moisture availability. About 11% of seeds damaged by predispersal seed predators (weevil larvae) remained viable and were released from dormancy. I hypothesize that predispersal seed predation (over 80% at one site) has a negative effect on population growth. Conservation of this species could benefit from improved fruit set and decreased seed predation.  相似文献

Abstract For hermaphroditic plant species whose fruit production is limited by maternal resources, the "pollen donation hypothesis" views large floral displays as an adaptation to enhance the probability of fathering seeds on other plants. This hypothesis has frequently been used to describe the evolution of large floral displays in milkweeds ( Asclepias ). Most tests of the pollen donation hypothesis, however, have used indirect measures, such as flower production or pollen removal, to estimate male reproductive success. To test the pollen donation hypothesis directly, we performed a paternity analysis and determined the number of seeds sired by individual genotypes in a natural population of poke milkweed, A. exaltata , in southwestern Virginia. Seeds sired (male success) and seeds produced (female success) were significantly correlated with flower number per plant (for male success: r = 0.32, P < 0.05; for female success: r = 0.66, P < 0.0001). Functional gender of plants that reproduced both as males and females (N = 17) was not correlated with flower number per plant ( r = 0.35, P>0.05), indicating that plants with large floral displays did not reproduce primarily as males. Percent fruit-set and seed number per fruit were higher in 1986, when levels of pollinarium removal also were higher. Furthermore, several umbels that experienced high pollinator activity selectively matured fruits that contained many seeds. We argue that the evolution of large floral displays in milkweeds is the result of selection to increase overall reproductive success rather than male reproductive success alone.  相似文献

Carrot seed weight, over the range 0·37 to 3·77 mg, and endosperm volume were closely and linearly related to endosperm cell number, the relationships accounting for 77–85% and 84–94% of the variance in seed weight and endosperm volume, respectively. The relationships were similar for seeds of cvs Chantenay and Amsterdam, and for seeds from primary and secondary umbels but were affected by season of seed production through differences in cell volume.  相似文献
