 A species of the gobiid genus Cristatogobius from northeastern Australia is described as new. This species is distinguishable from other species of the genus in having a higher number of scales in a longitudinal row and in a transverse row and a rounded caudal fin. In addition, there are differences in coloration such as brown reticulation on the upper anterior part of body and a red pectoral fin. A species of Cristatogobius reported from S. At Heron Island reef, Great Barrier Reef Australia, biomass densities and mean wet mass of Ward's damselfish Pomacentrus wardi and the jewelled blenny Salarias fasciatus were not significantly different at 2·37 v . 2·95 g m−2 and 8·7 v . 7·9 g, respectively. Whereas S. fasciatus significantly exceeded P. wardi in (1) total number of bites per day (3427 v . 1155), (2) the mass of epilithic algal community consumed per bite (2·19 v . 0·14 mg) and (3) total organic carbon consumed per day (487·31 v . 35·46 mg C m−2 day−1). Territorial behaviour differed also between the two species. Pomacentrus wardi chased from their territories a smaller proportion of blennies than roving grazers ( i.e . scarids, acanthurids, siganids and pomacentrids) relative to S. fasciatus . Salarias fasciatus chased c . 90% of other blennies from their territories, while chasing only c . 20% of all damsels that entered. Both P. wardi and S. fasciatus rarely chased non‐grazers. The chasing behaviour of S. fasciatus was size dependent, with resident fish chasing only individuals of its own family ( i.e . Blenniidae) that were the same or smaller size. Pomacentrus wardi may have tolerated S. fasciatus grazing within its territory, as it contributes to territory defence from other blennies. The possibility that the interaction between the two species is facilitative, rather than competitive, is discussed. It was concluded that salariine blennies play an important, and previously underestimated role in coral reef trophodynamics.  相似文献

The highest densities of gobiid larvae along the Finnish Baltic coast from 1974 to 1996 were found in the Åland Islands and the Archipelago Sea. The annual variation in gobiid densities was three-fold (from 1· 1 to 3·3 larvae m−2) with peak densities in the years 1977 and 1992 and the lowest density in 1987. No long-term trends in the density were found. The earliest gobiids were caught in the first half of May and the occurrence of larvae peaked at the end of June to early July.Within breeding seasons there was a positive correlation between water temperature at a depth of 1 m and the density of larvae. The density of larvae, however, did not correlate with mean summer temperature or the mean temperature of the previous summer. Instead larvae production was negatively affected by the severity of the previous winter as indicated by the maximum ice cover in the Baltic. The density of larvae was independent of larval density of the previous year suggesting that gobiid production primarily depends on the spawning stock size and may hence be regulated by density-independent factors.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the taxonomic status of the Fejervarya limnocharis complex relative to Malaysia and Japan populations, morphological observations and molecular phylogenetic analysis were carried out using three populations from Indonesia (type locality), Malaysia, and Japan. In addition, we conducted histological and spermatogenic observations using hybrids among these populations. Principal component and cluster analyses demonstrated that these populations could be clearly separated from one another. Abnormal testes were found in the hybrids between the Japan and Indonesia populations and between the Japan and Malaysia populations, but testes of the controls and hybrids between the Malaysia and Indonesia populations were quite normal. The mean number of univalents per cell was 5.42, 4.58, and 0.20 in hybrids between the Indonesia and Japan populations, Malaysia and Japan populations, and Indonesia and Malaysia populations, respectively. Sequence divergences in 16S rRNA and Cyt b genes were 0-0.4% (xbar=0.2%) and 0.3-1.5% (xbar=1.0%), respectively, between the Malaysia and Indonesia populations, and 2.4-2.6% (xbar=2.5%) and 11.0-12.0% (xbar=11.5%) between the Japan population and F. limnocharis complex, including the Malaysia and Indonesia populations and F. multistriata from China. This study indicated that the Malaysia population and F. multistriata from China should be designated as a subspecies of topotypic F. limnocharis, and that the Japan population should be regarded as a distinct species.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal dynamics of fish in tidepools on tidal mudflats in the Tama River estuary, Japan. A total of 1,156 individuals of 8 gobiid species were collected from May 2008 to April 2009. The total abundance of fishes peaked in September and October. Of three dominant species, Acanthogobius flavimanus was found only in spring and early summer, whereas Pseudogobius masago and Mugilogobius abei occurred in all seasons. The utilization patterns of tidepools with/without cobbles were different among the latter two species.  相似文献

We describe a new ancyrocephalid monogenean, Haliotrema cupensis n. sp., from a marine gobiid, Gobius cobitis (Pallas) from the Mediterranean Sea. This species differs from the other members of the genus by the morphology of the penis and accessory piece, the haptoral ornamentation and by possessing a larger testis. This is the first report of an ancyrocephalid on a marine gobiid and of a Haliotrema species in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Adults of three amphidromous gobiid fishes, Tridentiger brevispinis, Rhinogobius similis, and Gymnogobius petschiliensis, are euryhaline and generally found in both freshwater (FW) and brackish water (BW) areas. The determining factors for their choice of habitat with different salinity have never been explored. In this study, a salinity-choice experiment was conducted using the above species captured in the FW region of the Isazu River, northern Kyoto Prefecture. For comparison, the fluvial goby Rhinogobius flumineus and BW-acclimated G. petschiliensis were also tested. We found that the three euryhaline species, including BW-acclimated G. petschiliensis, preferred BW to FW, whereas R. flumineus preferred FW. These results suggest that salinity preference did not determine habitat in these euryhaline gobiids, which were found in FW. Surveys were also conducted focusing on competitors and predators in their potential habitats. Thus, net sampling captured many other gobiid species, and an environmental DNA method detected Japanese temperate bass, a voracious predator, in the estuarine areas, suggesting that biotic factors are major determinants in the distribution of euryhaline species.  相似文献

This resembles the alarm response found in ostariophysan fishes, darters, and at least one other gobiid. A new gobiid species,Acanthogobius insularis, is described from 88 specimens collected from Amami-oshima Island and Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan. Activity patterns of intertidal gobiid fish,Chasmichthys gulosus, collected from different tidal localities, were recorded in a constant environment. Gobies collected from a rocky shore with a large tidal range and a regular tidal regime displayed a ca. 12 hour rhythm in their activity pattern. Gobies from a rocky shore with a small tidal range and an irregular tidal regime, however, did not clearly display any such rhythm. The ecological implications of such activity rhythms are discussed from the viewpoints of feeding and avoidance of predators.  相似文献

The gobiid fish Trimma okinawae changes its sex bi-directionally according to its social status. Morphological changes in the urinogenital papillae (UGP) of this fish have been reported during sex change. However, there have been no detailed observations of such changes. Here, we histologically examined the UGP structure of male- and female-phase fish. UGPs of fish in female and male phase contained both oviducts and sperm ducts. Both ducts were coalesced into one duct within the posterior region of the UGP. Female-phase fish had many longitudinal folds in the hypertrophied tunica mucosa of the oviduct, which was found to be responsible for the transport of eggs and the removal of follicular cells from the oocyte. In contrast, male-phase fish had an immature oviduct and a mature sperm duct in the UGP. In the male-phase fish, the co-existence of spermatozoa and fibrillar secretions was observed in the sperm duct during spermiation.  相似文献

An illustrated identification key is provided to 49 species of Thysanoptera, Terebrantia that have been found in association with cultivated plants in Java. This is the first published identification system to this group of insects from Indonesia, and includes 15 species not previously recorded from Indonesia, and a further three species not previously recorded from Java. The biology of elasmobranchs makes them very vulnerable to fishing pressure and there is increasing international concern over their exploitation. In northern Australia the stocks of some species may be shared with those in southern Indonesia. Indonesia has the highest landings of elasmobranchs worldwide (>100,000 t p.a.) and millions of Indonesian artisanal fishers rely heavily on elasmobranchs taken in target fisheries. They are also taken by industrial trawlers and as bycatch in pelagic tuna fisheries. This paper, resulting from a collaborative project between Australia and Indonesia, summarises the elasmobranch fisheries; the characteristics of the fisheries are outlined, the status of the stocks are assessed, and management options described and discussed. The project focussed on representative markets and fish landing sites in southern Indonesia from 2001 to 2005. Data were from market surveys, the records of the Indonesian Directorate General of Capture Fisheries, and from research cruises. Data from the ongoing tuna monitoring programme showed that shark bycatch from the tuna fleets forms about 11% of shark landings in Indonesia. Yield per recruit and related analyses were used to integrate biological information to indicate the productivity of each species to allow for management policy options and constraints. Research cruise data show that catch rates of elasmobranchs in the Java Sea declined by at least one order of magnitude between 1976 and 1997. The results indicate strongly that many of the shark and ray species in Indonesia are overfished and that the most effective management strategy may need to involve capacity control, such as licencing, gear restrictions and catch limits, together with controls on the fin trade.  相似文献
