The inhibitory activity of five plant extracts viz. Artemisia absinthium L., Rumex obtusifolius L., Taraxacum officinale Weber ex Wiggers, Plantago lanceolata L. and Malva sylvestris L. were evaluated against the mycelial growth of three fungi Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler, Penicillium expansum Link ex Thom. and Mucor piriformis Fisher that cause rot diseases in fruits and vegetables resulting in low yield and quality of fruits and vegetables. Results revealed that all the concentrations of plant extracts brought about significant inhibition in the mycelial growth of these pathogenic fungi. However, the highest concentration caused maximum inhibition in the mycelial growth followed by lower concentrations of plant extracts. The extract of A. absinthium leaves at highest concentration (S) proved highly effective in inhibiting the mycelial growth of all these pathogenic fungi followed by other plant extracts. These plants thus may have potential as the new natural fungicide for management of fungal rot diseases.  相似文献

The leaf extracts of Piper guinensis, Ocimum sanctum, O. gratissimum and Cymbopogon citratus were effective in reducing the radial growth of Rhizoctonia solani in vitro and in checking the spread of the disease caused by the pathogen in the field. P. guinensis was the best in checking the spread of the pathogen both in vitro and in vivo. This was followed by C. citratus, O. sanctum and O. gratissimum. Citrus limon reduced the radial growth of the pathogen in vitro but failed to check the spread of the disease effectively in the field. Alcohol extracts were more effective than water extracts.  相似文献

Plant extracts obtained from Feronia limonia (leaves) Xanthium strumarium (flowering twigs) and Glossocardia bosvellia (leaves) were tested for their antimicrobial properties against certain bacterial species. Feronia leaf extract was ineffective on Bacillus pumilus and X. campestris, Vibrio cholerae was found quite sensitive to this extract. The extract of X. strumarium showed an abnormality with V. cholerae, where the inhibition exceeded the control with established antibiotics. Similarly, G. bosvellia caused maximum inhibition in Bacillus mycoides.  相似文献

Abstract

Aqueous extracts of 46 plants belonging to 32 different families of the plant kingdom were screened for antifungal activity against eight important species of Fusarium viz., Fusarium equiseti, F. moniliforme, F. semitectum, F. graminearum, F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum, F. solani and F. lateritium. The test fungi were isolated from maize, paddy and sorghum seeds collected from Mysore district, Mysore, India. Among the several plants screened only 12 plants have recorded significant antifungal activity. The antifungal activity of aqueous extracts varied among the test pathogens and was compared with that of the synthetic fungicides Blitox, Captan, Dithane M-45 and Thiram. F. proliferatum, which showed high susceptibility for the aqueous extracts, was tested using different solvent extracts viz., petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, methanol and ethanol extracts of all the 12 plants. The results revealed that these plants could be exploited for ecofriendly management of the diseases caused by the test fungal pathogens and seed biodeterioration during storage.  相似文献

The hydroalcoholic extracts of Calendula officinalis, Hypericum perforatum, Plantago lanceolata and Glycyrrhiza glabra which exhibited different anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated for the possible mode of action by studying their antioxidant potential. In the present study we investigated if standardized hydroalcoholic extracts of plants such as Calendula officinalis, Hypericum perforatum, Plantago lanceolata and Glycyrrhiza glabra produced by Hofigal Stock Company could modulate the respiratory burst of human activated neutrophils, as a consequence of their antioxidant capacity. Their antioxidant properties were measured using a colorimetric assay (Total Antioxidant Status kit). We demonstrated that Hypericum perforatum and Calendula officinalis hydroalcoholic extracts possessed a significant antioxidant activity while Plantago lanceolata and Glycyrrhiza glabra hydroalcoholic extracts had a minor antioxidant status. Using reactive oxygen species-generating systems (OZ-activated human PMN neutrophils), Calendula officinalis and Hypericum perforatum extracts showed strong reactive oxygen species scavenging property, Hypericum perforatum extract exhibing the highest scavenging activity. These results confirm the potential of Calendula officinalis and Hypericum perforatum investigated hydroalcoholic extracts as medicinal remedies to be used in different inflammatory/allergic diseases. These extracts could be a useful tool for obtaining new antioxidant/anti-inflammatory agents.  相似文献

Recent efforts to discover phytochemicals that could substitute for petroleumderived fuels and industrial feedstocks have not given much attention to the potential of these same phytochemicals to provide sources of biologically active compounds. The suitability of extraction products made to assess specific plants as potential botanochemical sources has been evaluated for use in screening procedures for evidence of biologically active compounds. Screening procedures for antibacterial, antifungal and toxic properties are discussed. Screening results are presented for extracts of nearly 80 species of plants from the southeastern United States and southern Great Plains that had previously been evaluated as sources of botanochemicals.  相似文献

The effect of rock salts, NaCI, propionic acid, NCP.75, plant products — asafoetida, turmeric powder and aqueous leaf extracts ofAzadirachta indica, Lawsonia alba, Pongamia glabra andTridax procumbens on seed colonization and aflatoxin production byAspergillus flavus (NRRL-3000) was studied in two Spanish bunch groundnut varieties (J-11 and JL-24). All these treatments inhibited seed colonization and aflatoxin production to varying degrees. Inhibition of seed colonization with chemicals, plant products and aqueous leaf extracts was observed to range between 17 to 96%, 27 to 100%, and 8 to 75% while inhibition of aflatoxin production ranged from 14 to 74%, 42 to 71%, and 6 to 64%, respectively. In general, salts (20g/L), propionic acid (10mL/L), asafoetida (pure Ig/L and impure 20g/L), andAzadirachta indica aqueous leaf extract (20 g/L) are better in preventing aflatoxin contamination in both the groundnut varieties.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of chelating ligands on iron movement in growth medium, iron bioavailability, and growth of radish sprouts (Raphanus sativus) were investigated. Iron is an important nutrient for plant growth, yet the insoluble state of iron hydroxides in alkaline conditions decreases its bioavailability. Iron chelates increase iron uptake and have been used in agriculture to correct iron chlorosis. While previous studies have reported the effects of chelating ligands on iron solubility and bioavailability, the present study elucidates the pattern of iron movement by chelating ligands in plant growth medium. The apparent mobility of iron in growth medium was calculated using a ‘4-box’ model. Ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) and hydroxy-iminodisuccinic acid (HIDS) produced the highest apparent mobility of iron from the bottom layer of the medium (initially 10−4 M Fe(III)) to the upper layer (no iron), followed by glutamatediacetic acid (GLDA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA), and iminodisuccinic acid (IDS). Iron movement in the growth medium was influenced by the chelating ligand species, pH, and ligand exposure time. The iron uptake and growth of radish sprouts were related to the iron mobility produced by the chelating ligands. These results suggest that, in alkaline media, chelating ligands dissolve the hardly soluble iron hydroxide species, thus increasing iron mobility, iron uptake, and plant growth. HIDS, which is biodegradable, was one of the most effective ligands studied; therefore, this compound would be a good alternative to other environmentally persistent chelating ligands.  相似文献

As Alepidea amatymbica is commonly used and accepted as medicinal plant in South Africa for various indications, the scientific basis of its anecdotally described, putative anti-HIV properties was investigated. To this aim, we used an accelerated extraction–purification approach; extracts and therein sub-fractions of A. amatymbica were assessed in a cell-based assay targeting the replication of prototypic CXCR4-tropic (NL4-3) or CCR5-tropic (NL-AD87) HIV-1 strains.Sub-fractions of the extracts were generated through semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fractionation into triplicates of 96-well microtitre plates; they were then separately subjected to biological analysis and ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) time-of-flight (TOF) analysis. A correlation plot was generated between the biological and chemical data to identify the biologically active compounds in those fractions that showed significant selective anti-HIV activity. The results indicated that rosmarinic acid was present in the wells that showed promising anti-HIV activity in vitro indicating that this compound is at least in part responsible for the antiviral properties of the A. amatymbica extracts. However, compared to standard retroviral inhibitor the anti-HIV activity of the pure compound was found to be only quite moderate. Nevertheless, the accelerated approach described herein increases the efficiency of screens towards identifying drug candidates much earlier in the discovery stage.  相似文献

Previous works have demonstrated that stem bark extracts of Cola nitida (Sterculiaceae), Afrormosia laxiflora and Pterocarpus erinaceus (Fabaceae) provoked a blockade of female rat ovulation and estrous cycle by inhibiting pituitary LH release in vivo. In addition, these plant extracts exerted an inhibitory effect on LH release of rat pituitary cells. Therefore, these data could explain inhibitory effects of plant extracts on LH release in vivo. The present study was undertaken to examine the mechanisms by which these plants exert their antigonadotropic activities. So, we studied the biological activities of these plant extracts on pituitary cells in culture. Data show that C. nitida, A. laxiflora and P. erinaceus extracts only inhibit LH release and have no effect on FSH release. In fact, A. laxiflora, P. erinaceus and C. nitida extracts diminish LH release in culture medium without acting on rat pituitary cell content. Plant extracts form complexes with basic glycoproteins (but not with acid glycoproteins) and prevent them from entering the cells.  相似文献

We have screened 356 libraries of Korean herbal plant extracts to find potential anti-obesity drugs. We employed the recently developed fluorescence polarization high throughput screening (FP HTS) assays of human neuropeptide FF (NPFF) receptors in 384-well microtiter plates. The primary hits were cherry-picked from the libraries and further analyzed by secondary displacement curve assays, in vitro GTPgammaS binding assays and cell-based CRE luciferase reporter assays. Agonists of NPFF receptors showed biphasic affinity curves while the antagonist, BIBP 3226, gave a monophasic affinity curve in competitive binding assays. We isolated and characterized two agonists of human NPFF2 receptor, PC 314 with K(i) of 1.42 microM, and PC 315 with K(i) of 2.17 microM from Schizandra chinensis. PC 314 and PC 315 have been characterized as benzoylgomisin Q (M.W. 552) and gomisin G (M.W. 536). We report that PC 314 and PC 315 are the first non-peptide, natural compounds, which bind to human NPFF2 receptors with good affinity. PC 314 and PC 315 inhibit forskolin-stimulated luciferase expression when CHO cells are co-transfected with NPFF2 receptor and CRE reporter vector. They possess the pharmacological and functional profiles of full agonists. The FP HTS system provides a specific, sensitive and reproducible methodology for studying and screening NPFF receptor ligands.  相似文献

An interpretation of some whole plant water transport phenomena   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文
A treatment of water flow into and through plants to the evaporating surface of the leaves is presented. The model is driven by evaporation from the cell wall matrix of the leaves. The adsorptive and pressure components of the cell wall matric potential are analyzed and the continuity between the pressure component and the liquid tension in the xylem established. Continuity of these potential components allows linking of a root transport function, driven by the tension in the xylem, to the leaf water potential. The root component of the overall model allows for the solvent-solute interactions characteristic of a membrane-bound system and discussion of the interactions of environmental variables such as root temperature and soil water potentials. A partition function is developed from data in the literature which describes how water absorbed by the plant might be divided between transpiration and leaf growth over a range of leaf water potentials.

Relationships between the overall system conductance and the conductance coefficients of the various plant parts (roots, xylem, leaf matrix) are established and the influence of each of these discussed.

The whole plant flow model coupled to the partition function is used to simulate several possible relationships between leaf water potential and transpiration rate. The effects of changing some of the partition function coefficients, as well as the root medium water potential on these simulations is illustrated.

In addition to the general usefulness of the model and its ability to describe a wide range of situations, we conclude that the relationships used, dealing with bulk fluid flow, diffusion, and solute transport, are adequate to describe the system and that analogically based theoretical systems, such as the Ohm's law analogy, probably ought to be abandoned for this purpose.

Saprolegnosis of fresh water fishes caused by Saprolegnia diclina often results in serious economic losses to fish hatcheries. Despite the proven efficiency of malachite green as a potential fungicide in prevention and control of fish saprolegnosis, there is a strong debate about its safety aspects in use since it was documented to be responsible for many carcinogenic and teratogenic attributes. Bioactivity of four ethanolic plant extracts were assessed to attain a natural alternative to the traditional fungicide currently used in saprolegnosis control. Ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum and Thymus vulgaris exhibited a potential efficacy in suppressing mycelial growth of S. diclina at concentration of 0.5 mg/ml while extracts of Nigella sativa and Zingiber officinales were not effective respectively. The extract of pomegranate showed the highest antifungal potency with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 200 ppm while thyme extract was less effective and recorded MIC of 400 ppm against S. diclina. The acute fish toxicity of the plant extracts indicated the low toxicity of P. granatum and T. vulgaris extracts as no fish mortalities were detected at aquaria containing 200, 400 and 800 ppm of plant extracts respectively. Considering the low toxicity of these plant extracts, it may be concluded that 200 and 400 ppm of pomegranate and thyme extracts which suppressed the mycelial growth of the S. diclina could be safely used for saprolegniasis control. Both of pomegranate and thyme extracts which proved to possess a potential antifungal activity can be considered as a natural alternative fungicides to control saprolegniasis avoiding carcinogenic malachite green application.  相似文献

Abstract

The inhibitory effect of water extract of seed, leaf and bark of five plants, viz., Tamarindus indica, Cassia siamea, Isoberlinia doka, Dolnix regia and Cassia sieberiana was evaluated on larval hatch of Meloidogyne incognita in the laboratory. All the plant parts inhibited larval hatch of M. incoginta Percentage inhibition was higher in the seeds followed by the leaves and bark. Degree of inhibition observed, was directly related to the concentration of the extract. The standard suspensions inhibited hatching by about 97% while dilutions of S/100 inhibited larval hatch by 3%. Nematicidal activity of the plant parts of the five plants showed that C. siamea was the most effective followed by C. sieberiana, I. doka, T. indica and D. regia.  相似文献

The extracts obtained from 14 plants of the Mexican medicinal flora were assessed for anti-inflammatory activity by carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. The i.p. administration of the extracts at a dose of 400 mg/kg produced a high reduction of edema with 70% of the plant extracts. Oenothera rosea methanol extract, Sphaeralcea angustifolia chloroform extract, Acaciafarnesiana, Larrea tridentata and Rubus coriifolius methanol extracts as well as the aqueous extract of Chamaedora tepejilote were demonstrated to be particularly active against the induced hind-paw edema. Moderate inhibition of edema formation was also demonstrated with the methanol extracts of Astianthus viminalis, Brickellia paniculata, C. tepejilote and Justicia spicigera.  相似文献

Membrane-associated aggregates of filamentous virus particles were found occasionally in sap from plants infected with each of five distinct viruses of the potato Y group. The aggregates measured up to 960 × 700 nm and contained from four to twenty-four virus particles. Their occurrence is apparently specifically associated with potato Y and allied viruses, observations suggesting that they may be either fragments of virus-containing cytoplasmic strands or groups of particles enveloped during cellular disruption by pieces of tonoplast with which they are associated in vivo.  相似文献

Prevention of food spoilage and food poisoning pathogens is usually achieved by use of chemical preservatives which have negative impacts including: human health hazards of the chemical applications, chemical residues in food & feed chains and acquisition of microbial resistance to the used chemicals. Because of such concerns, the necessity to find a potentially effective, healthy safer and natural alternative preservatives is increased. Within these texts, Plant extracts have been used to control food poisoning diseases and preserve foodstuff. Antimicrobial activity of five plant extracts were investigated against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi using agar disc diffusion technique. Ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum, Syzygium aromaticum, Zingiber officinales and Thymus vulgaris were potentially effective with variable efficiency against the tested bacterial strains at concentration of 10 mg/ml while extract of Cuminum cyminum was only effective against S. aureus respectively. P. granatum and S. aromaticum ethanolic extracts were the most effective plant extracts and showed bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against the highly susceptible strains of food borne pathogenic bacteria (S. aureus and P. aeruginosa) with MIC's ranged from 2.5 to 5.0 mg/ml and MBC of 5.0 and 10 mg/ml except P. aeruginosa which was less sensitive and its MBC reached to 12.5 mg/ml of S. aromaticum respectively. These plant extracts which proved to be potentially effective can be used as natural alternative preventives to control food poisoning diseases and preserve food stuff avoiding healthy hazards of chemically antimicrobial agent applications.  相似文献
