The Schizothoracine fishes are widely distributed in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) area and its peripheral regions, which provide a prime example of adaptation in highland aquatic environments. Recent progresses have revealed various genetic adaptations of these fishes by comparing to distantly related lowerland species, however, comparative studies on closely-related species of different altitudes are still lacking. In this study, we sequenced and annotated a primitive Schizothoracine fish Schizothorax nukiangensis Tsao and a highly specialized one Gymnocypris dobula. We performed evolutionary analyses to investigate the candidate genes and signaling pathways involved QTP highland adaptation in both Schizothoracine fishes. Analysis of the 11,007 one-copy orthologs to the primitive cyprinid species, Danio rerio, revealed that both G. dobula and S. nukiangensis showed elevated evolutionary rates. A large number of genes related to hypoxia, including genes involved metabolic processes and cardiovascular system development, exhibited signatures of positive selection in both Schizothoracine fishes, but very few positively selected genes were found overlapping among these Schizothoracines. Our results indicated divergent genetic adaptation to highland environment for aquatic species living in QTP.  相似文献

Hemoglobin (Hb) plays an important role in oxygen transfer from lung to tissues. Possession of a Hb with high oxygen affinity helps highland animals to adapt to high altitude, has been studied profoundly. Plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae), a native species living at 3,000-5,000 m above sea level on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is a typical hypoxia and low temperature tolerant mammal. To investigate the possible mechanisms of plateau pika Hb in adaptation to high altitude, the complete cDNA and amino acid sequences of plateau pika hemoglobin alpha and beta chains have been described. Compared with human Hb, alterations in important regions can be noted: alpha111 Ala-->Asn, beta35 Tyr-->Phe, beta112 Cys-->Val, beta115 Ala-->Ser, and beta125 Pro-->Gln. Phylogenetic analysis of alpha and beta chains shows that plateau pika is closer to rabbit than to other species. This study provides essential information for elucidating the possible roles of hemoglobin in adaptation to extremely high altitude in plateau pika.

Theory on condition‐dependent risk‐taking indicates that when prey are in poor condition, their anti‐predator responses should be weak. However, variation in responses resulting from differences in condition is generally considered an incidental by‐product of organisms living in a heterogeneous environment. Using Leptinotarsa decemlineata beetles and stinkbug (Podisus maculiventris) predators, we hypothesised that in response to predation risk, parents improve larval nutritional condition and expression of anti‐predator responses by promoting intraclutch cannibalism. We showed that mothers experiencing predation risk increase production of unviable trophic eggs, which assures provisioning of an egg meal to the newly hatched offspring. Next, we experimentally demonstrated that egg cannibalism reduces L. decemlineata vulnerability to predation by improving larval nutritional condition and expression of anti‐predator responses. Intraclutch cannibalism in herbivorous insects might be a ubiquitous strategy, aimed to overcome the dual challenge of feeding on protein‐limited diets while living under constant predation threat.  相似文献

The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) comprises a platform (sometimes called the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau sensu stricto), the Himalayas, and Hengduan Mountains (Liang et al.,2018; Mao et al.,2021). The latter two parts and adjacent highlands are also called the Pan-Himalaya. Numerous plants are distributed there with many endemic species, probably because of the high diverse landscapes created by continuous geological and climatic activities (Favre et al.,2015; Mao et al.,2021). As the well known biodiversity hotspot of the alpine plants in the world (Sun et al.,2017), many studies have been conducted on evolutionary origin and ecological adaptation of those species occurring in the QTP (e.g., Wen et al.,2014, 2019; Zhang et al.,2019). In the present special issue, we collected 15 related papers on this topic. Among them, two are invited reviews. Mao et al. (2021) provide a comprehensive review of evolutionary origin of species diversity on the QTP. Especially, they outlined major disputes and likely causes in this research topic, including circumscribing and naming the QTP, the QTP uplifts, dating of molecular phylogenetic trees, non-causal correlations between QTP uplifts and species diversification and the unified ice sheet. The authors also summarized genomic advancements related to high-altitude adaptation of both plants and animals. Tong et al. (2021) reviewed the reproductive strategies of animal-pollinated alpine plants on the QTP, involving pollination system, pollen limitation, self-pollination, and sexual system. In this region, 95.4% of animal-pollinated plants are pollinated by insects (i.e., bees, moths, butterflies, and flies) with only 4% by vertebrates (i.e., bats and birds). Self-pollination through self-compatibility shift from outcrossing has become an effective reproductive strategy to overcome pollen limitation in alpine plants. The other 13 research papers aimed to address origin and adaptation of alpine flora involving three major lines of evidence: genomics, ecology, and paleobotany. We hope that the collection of these papers will increase our understanding of the origin, speciation, and adaptation of alpine species on the QTP.  相似文献
