Small and isolated populations face threats from genetic drift and inbreeding. To rescue populations from these threats, conservation biologists can augment gene flow into small populations to increase variation and reduce inbreeding depression. Spectacular success stories include greater prairie chickens in Illinois (Westermeier et al. 1998 ), adders in Sweden (Madsen et al. 1999 ) and panthers in Florida (Johnson et al. 2010 ). However, we also know that performing such crosses risks introducing genes that may be poorly adapted to local conditions or genetic backgrounds. A classic example of such ‘outbreeding depression’ occurred when different subspecies of ibex from Turkey and the Sinai were introduced to assist recovery of an ibex population in Czechoslovakia (Templeton 1986 ). Despite being fertile, the hybrids birthed calves too early, causing the whole population to disappear. In the face of uncertainty, conservation biologists have tended to respect genetic identity, shying away from routinely crossing populations. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Frankham ( 2015 ) compiles empirical data from experimental studies to assess the costs and benefits of between‐population crosses (Fig. 1 ). Crosses screened to exclude those involving highly divergent populations or distinct habitats show large heterosis with few apparent risks of outbreeding depression. This leads Frankham to advocate for using assisted gene flow more widely. But do the studies analysed in this meta‐analysis adequately test for latent outcrossing depression? 相似文献

Why can alien species succeed in environments to which they have had no opportunity to adapt and even become more abundant than many native species? Ecological theory suggests two main possible answers for this paradox: competitive superiority of exotic species over native species and opportunistic use of ecological opportunities derived from human activities. We tested these hypotheses in birds combining field observations and experiments along gradients of urbanization in New South Wales (Australia). Five exotic species attained densities in the study area comparable to those of the most abundant native species, and hence provided a case for the invasion paradox. The success of these alien birds was not primarily associated with a competitive superiority over native species: the most successful invaders were smaller and less aggressive than their main native competitors, and were generally excluded from artificially created food patches where competition was high. More importantly, exotic birds were primarily restricted to urban environments, where the diversity and abundance of native species were low. This finding agrees with previous studies and indicates that exotic and native species rarely interact in nature. Observations and experiments in the field revealed that the few native species that exploit the most urbanized environments tended to be opportunistic foragers, adaptations that should facilitate survival in places where disturbances by humans are frequent and natural vegetation has been replaced by man-made structures. Successful invaders also shared these features, suggesting that their success is not a paradox but can be explained by their capacity to exploit ecological opportunities that most native species rarely use. 相似文献

The woolly flying squirrelEupetaurus cinereus! Thomas, 1888 is the longest sciurid and most massive mammalian glider in the world. Because of this, there has been some question about the squirrel’s gliding ability. I document three glide events performed by this species. These glide events, coupled with comparisons of glide ratios, ponderal ratios, and a log-log plot of head + body length versus body mass with other flying squirrels, demonstrates that the woolly flying squirrel, despite its size, is a capable glider and is no more robust than other flying squirrels. Predation attempts that were observed during glide events are discussed within an evolutionary context. 相似文献

Motor endplates in fast and slow skeletal muscles have different functional and morphological characteristics, and for brevity, are termed fast and slow respectively. We have examined the terminal arborization patterns of fast fibular and slow soleus axons 3-4 and 6 months after they reinnervated old preformed endplates or formed new ectopic endplates with denervated rat soleus muscles. Ectopic endplates formed by transplanted fibular and soleus nerves were fast and slow in appearance respectively. Both the fibular and the soleus nerves formed endplates of slow appearance when they reinnervated the original endplates. The fast appearance of ectopic fibular nerve endplates was unaffected by reinnervation of the original endplates by the slow soleus nerve. Dually innervated fibres had intermediate contraction speed compared to the fast fibres reinnervated only by the fibular nerve and the slow fibres reinnervated only by the soleus nerve. Continuous stimulation of the transplanted fibular nerve at 10 Hz for 3-4 months, starting just before the onset of ectopic endplate formation, prevented the increase in contraction speed seen without stimulation. The ectopic endplates of the stimulated axons were much smaller than usual and showed some signs of fast to slow transformation, but the transformation was incomplete and varied in degree between preparations. Transplanted soleus axons were less prone to growing along foreign pathways and to forming ectopic endplates than fibular axons.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Floods accompanied by high flow and high water turbidity are usually believed to cause problems to fish-eating birds and mammals searching visually for their prey. In the present study the diets of breeding kingfishers were studied during the normal river situation and during a long-lasting flood event with respect to diet composition, size of fish prey and food diversity index. During the normal situation (flow 1.75 m3 s?1, Secchi disc depth 0.5–1 m), the diet of a kingfisher was dominated by benthic fish species (52.9% by numbers, 63.9% by weight), the average size of fish taken was 6.5 cm L T and 3.0 g and the food diversity index reached its lowest value (1.57). In contrast, during the long-lasting flood event (flow 5–28 m3 s?1, Secchi disc depth 0.03–0.4 m) the diet of the kingfisher was dominated by sub-surface fish species (72.4% by numbers, 76.1% by weight) and both the average size of fish taken (7.4 cm L T and 3.7 g) and the food diversity index (1.83) increased significantly. The birds provided their nestlings with lower numbers of fish of larger sizes, which resulted in very similar weights of the young birds prior to fledging when the flood and normal situations were compared. This study provides evidence that in different foraging conditions the kingfishers adopt different foraging strategies to maintain their high breeding success. 相似文献

Chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) is a major pathway of lysosomal proteolysis essential for the control of intermediary metabolism. So far, the absence of any identifiable LAMP2A – a necessary and limiting protein for CMA – outside of the tetrapod clade, led to the paradigm that this cellular function was (presumably) restricted to mammals and birds. However, after we identified expressed sequences displaying high sequence homology with the mammalian LAMP2A in several fish species, our findings challenge that view and suggest that CMA likely appeared much earlier during evolution than initially thought. Hence, our results do not only shed an entirely new light on the evolution of CMA, but also bring new perspectives on the possible use of complementary genetic models, such as zebrafish or medaka for studying CMA function from a comparative angle/view. 相似文献

It is a basis of darwinian evolution that the microevolutionary mechanisms that can be studied in the present are sufficient to account for macroevolution. However, this idea needs to be tested explicitly, as highlighted here by the example of the superceding of dinosaurs and pterosaurs by birds and placental mammals that occurred near the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary approximately 65 million years ago. A major problem for testing the sufficiency of microevolutionary processes is that independent ideas (such as the existence of an extraterrestrial impact, and the extinction of dinosaurs) were linked without the evidence for each idea being evaluated separately. Here, we suggest and discuss five testable models for the times and divergences of modern mammals and birds. Determination of the model that best represents these events will enable the role of microevolutionary mechanisms to be evaluated. The question of the sufficiency of microevolutionary processes for macroevolution is solvable, and available evidence supports an important role for biological processes in the initial decline of dinosaurs and pterosaurs. 相似文献

Birds are anosmic or at best microsmatic… This misbelief persisted until very recently and has strongly influenced the outcome
of communication studies in birds, with olfaction remaining neglected as compared to acoustic and visual channels. However,
there is now clear empirical evidence showing that olfaction is perfectly functional in birds and birds use olfactory information
in a variety of ethological contexts. Although the existence of pheromones has never been formally demonstrated in this vertebrate
class, different groups of birds, such as petrels, auklets and ducks have been shown to produce specific scents that could
play a significant role in within-species social interactions. Behavioral experiments have indeed demonstrated that these
odors influence the behavior of conspecifics. Additionally, in quail, deprivation of olfactory inputs decreases neuronal activation
induced by sexual interactions with a female. It seems therefore well established that birds enjoy a functional sense of smell
and a fast growing body of experimental evidence suggests that they use this channel of olfactory communication to control
their social life. The unequivocal identification of an avian pheromone is, however, still ahead of us but there are now many

Development within a population is known to vary with abiotic and biotic factors. However, instances of slow and fast development, i.e. different development rates within the same egg batch or cohort, have not yet been rigorously investigated in many organisms. The present study was undertaken to assess the influence of an exogenous cue, temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C), on slow and fast development and its effect on reproductive attributes in two ladybird species, Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius) and Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). A clear bimodal pattern of distribution with two peaks was found at each temperature where the first peak represented the fast developers and the second peak slow developers. Variation in ratio and development of slow and fast developers within a cohort at different temperatures was observed to ascertain whether the phenomenon has a purely genetic basis or is environmentally influenced. The ratio of slow and fast developers in a cohort differed with temperature but not with species. Slow developers showed a female biased sex ratio and low body mass. Fast developing females laid higher numbers of eggs with higher egg viability than slow developing ones. More slow developers were found at low temperature (15 and 20 °C), equal numbers at medium temperature (25 °C) and less at higher temperature (30 and 35 °C). Results of the study are indicative of stability of the slow and fast development in the egg batch and the likelihood that the variation observed at emergence was owing to exogenous cues influenced differential rates of mortality. 相似文献

A century has passed since the discovery of the paratympanic organ (PTO), a mechanoreceptive sense organ in the middle ear of birds and other tetrapods. This luminal organ contains a sensory epithelium with typical mechanosensory hair cells and may function as a barometer and altimeter. The organ is arguably the most neglected sense organ in living tetrapods. The PTO is believed to be homologous to a lateral line sense organ, the spiracular sense organ of nonteleostean fishes. Our review summarizes the current state of knowledge of the PTO and draws attention to the astounding lack of information about the unique and largely unexplored sensory modality of barometric perception. 相似文献

Feather mites (suborder Astigmata, superfamilies Analgoidea, Pterolichoidea and Freyaniidae) are among the commonest ectosymbionts of birds. Most researchers have assumed they are parasites, having negative effects on hosts. Here we present evidence that suggests that feather mites may not be parasites. We develop a framework for considering conditional outcomes in these interspecific associations, dealing with different kinds of relationships between symbionts. The non-parasitic status of feather mites is supported by a literature review as well as by preliminary data on mites' food. We illustrate symbiotic relationships with a graphical model showing different scenarios in which hosts' cost-benefit relations are determined by the interactions among their symbionts. 相似文献

Age estimation of juvenile European hake Merluccius merluccius based on otolith microstructure analysis: a slow or fast growth pattern? 下载免费PDF全文
The main goal of this study was to examine otolith microstructure and to estimate the age and growth of European hake Merluccius merluccius from the eastern Mediterranean Sea. One hundred and twenty‐nine specimens ranging from 102 to 438 mm in total length (LT) were used. Age estimations were based on the study of the otolith microstructure, which was revealed after grinding both frontal sides of otoliths. The enumerations of the daily growth increments (DGI) as well as their width (WDGI) measurements were made on calibrated digital images. The number of DGI in otoliths ranged between 163 and 717. Four phases in the WDGI evolution were distinguished: (1) larval–juvenile pelagic phase, with an increasing trend in WDGI up to the 60th DGI, (2) settlement phase, with a short‐term deceleration in WDGI between the 61st and 150th DGI, (3) juvenile demersal phase, characterized by a stabilization of WDGI from 151st to 400th DGI and (4) adult phase, with a decreasing trend in WDGI after the 400th DGI. Age, sex and month of formation were found to affect the WDGI in all phases, with the exception of age at the juvenile demersal phase. The power curve with intercept model described best the relationship of M. merluccius LT with age (TDGI), according to Akaike criteria, revealing differences in growth between females [LT = 65 · 36(TDGI)0 · 40 ? 388 · 55] and males [LT = 69 · 32(TDGI)0 · 37 ? 352 · 88] for the sizes examined. The mean daily growth rates were 0·61 mm day?1 for females and 0·52 mm day?1 for males, resulting in an LT of 283 and 265 mm at the end of their first year of life. In comparison with previous studies on the Mediterranean Sea, the results of this study showed a greater growth rate, similar to results from tagging experiments and otolith microstructure analyses for M. merluccius in other geographic areas. 相似文献

The objective of this article is to review genotoxicologic and carcinogenic profile of the artificial sweetener aspartame. Aspartame is a synthetic dipeptide, nearly 180–200 times sweeter than sucrose. It is the most widely used artificial sweetener especially in carbonated and powdered soft drinks, beverages, drugs and hygiene products. There is a discussion ongoing for many years whether aspartame posses genotoxic and carcinogenic risk for humans. This question led to many studies to specify the adverse effects of aspartame. Therefore, we aimed to review the oldest to latest works published in major indices to gather information within this article. With respect to published data, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity of aspartame is still confusing. So, consumers should be aware of the potential side effects of aspartame before they consume it. 相似文献

From the late Pliocene to now, blooms of toxic algae are associated with mortalities of marine birds. Given the long historical presence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) worldwide and the numbers of seabirds that feed on filter-feeding fish and shellfish, it is surprising that relatively few incidents of seabird deaths as a result of toxic algae have been reported. The limited information available tends to come from major events, whereas the rare events are missed and hence not reported. Much is anecdotal and still more probably is not published. We suspect that factors working in concert may lead to deaths and wrecks that might not occur as a result of anyone factor working independently, e.g. starvation tends to render birds more vulnerable to stress.“Seabird wrecks”, very much larger than usual concentration of seabird corpses washed ashore over a short period of time, often provide evidence of deleterious conditions in offshore populations, e.g. weather, food, pollution, fishing activities, and parasites. It is noted in the literature that wrecks caused by natural toxins such as botulism and algal toxins are apparently less common; however, this perception may be due to a combination of factors including the bird species involved, size of populations, location, and chance of discovery. Wrecks involving near-shore species probably provide a more accurate estimate of total mortality for any given event than offshore species.A survey of available data on the impacts of toxic algae on seabirds revealed an array of responses ranging from reduced feeding activity, inability to lay eggs, and loss of motor coordination to death. Severe impacts on recruitment have been noted in some populations. There are few experimental studies; however, evidence has been provided for the ability of some species to ‘learn’ to avoid toxic food sources. We present a summary of available data on seabird/toxic algal interactions and suggestions of how impacts on seabirds during future blooms of harmful algae be recorded. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although some manufacturers have optimistically described instruments with prices in the 40,000 US dollars range as "personal cytometers", analogy with the personal computer suggests that the target price for a true "personal" cytometer should be under 5,000 US dollars. Since such an apparatus could find a wide range of applications in cytomics in both developing and developed countries, it seemed desirable to consider its technical and economic feasibility. METHODS: Using resolution targets and a variety of fluorescent bead standards immobilized on filters and/or slides, we evaluated high-intensity LEDs as fluorescence excitation sources, relatively inexpensive CCD cameras as detectors, and 35 mm camera lenses and plastic low-power microscope optics for light collection in a simple, inexpensive low-resolution imaging cytometer. RESULTS: The components tested could be combined toproduce an instrument capable of detecting fewer than 10,000 molecules of cell-associated fluorescent label, and thus applicable to a broad range of cytometric tasks. CONCLUSIONS: Given the requirements for light sources, detectors, optics, mechanics, electronics and data analysis hardware and software, and the components presently available, it should be easier to reach the desired 5,000 US dollars price point with an image cytometer than with a flow cytometer. 相似文献
