Sub-Antarctic Marion Island has had a permanent research station for 50 years and the islands Wandering Albatrosses have been intensively studied for 20 years. The reactions of breeding birds to approaches by a human on foot were recorded. Three response variables were calculated: intensity of vocal reaction (IVR), intensity of non-vocal reaction (INR) and overall response index (ORI). At 5 m from the nest, twice as many birds stood and/or vocalised as at 15 m. Nearest neighbour distance, age and gender did not explain individual variability of responses. Study colony birds had higher IVR scores than non-study colony birds; birds at colonies closest to the station had the highest ORI scores. A better breeding record was associated with lower IVR and ORI scores, but a causative relationship remains to be demonstrated. A minimum viewing distance of 25 m is recommended for breeding Wandering Albatrosses.

A key point in the analysis of dynamical models of biological systems is to handle systems of relatively high dimensions.
In the present paper we propose a method to hierarchically organize a certain type of piecewise affine (PWA) differential
systems. This specific class of systems has been extensively studied for the past few years, as it provides a good framework
to model gene regulatory networks. The method, shown on several examples, allows a qualitative analysis of the asymptotic
behavior of a PWA system, decomposing it into several smaller subsystems. This technique, based on the well-known strongly
connected components decomposition, is not new. However, its adaptation to the non-smooth PWA differential equations turns
out to be quite relevant because of the strong discrete structure underlying these equations. Its biological relevance is
shown on a 7-dimensional PWA system modeling the gene network responsible for the carbon starvation response in Escherichia coli.

Methanogens growing on C-1 substrates synthesize 2-carbon acetyl groups in the form of acetyl-CoA for carbon assimilation
using the multienzyme complex acetyl-CoA decarbonylase/synthase (ACDS) which contains five different subunits encoded within
an operon. In species growing on acetate ACDS also functions to cleave the acetate C-C bond for energy production by methanogenesis.
A number of species of Methanosarcina that are capable of growth on either C-1 compounds or acetate contain two separate ACDS operons, and questions have been
raised about whether or not these operons play separate roles in acetate synthesis and cleavage. Methanosarcina thermophila genomic DNA was analyzed for the presence of two ACDS operons by PCR amplifications with different primer pairs, restriction
enzyme analyses, DNA sequencing and Southern blot analyses. A single ACDS operon was identified and characterized, with no
evidence for more than one. MALDI mass spectrometric analyses were carried out on ACDS preparations from methanol- and acetate-grown
cells. Peptide fragmentation patterns showed that the same ACDS subunits were present regardless of growth conditions. The
evidence indicates that a single form of ACDS is used both for acetate cleavage during growth on acetate and for acetate synthesis
during growth on C-1 substrates.

Decreased HRV has been consistently associated with increased cardiac mortality and morbidity in HF patients. The aim of this
study is to determine if a 6-week course of heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback and breathing retraining could increase
exercise tolerance, HRV, and quality of life in patients with New York Heart Association Class I-III heart failure (HF). Participants
(N = 29) were randomly assigned to either the treatment group consisting of six sessions of breathing retraining, HRV biofeedback
and daily practice, or the comparison group consisting of six sessions of quasi-false alpha-theta biofeedback and daily practice.
Exercise tolerance, measured by the 6-min walk test (6MWT), HRV, measured by the standard deviation of normal of normal beats
(SDNN), and quality of life, measured by the Minnesota Living with Congestive Heart Failure Questionnaire, were measured baseline
(week 0), post (week 6), and follow-up (week 18). Cardiorespiratory biofeedback significantly increased exercise tolerance
(p = .05) for the treatment group in the high (≥31%) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) category between baseline and
follow-up. Neither a significant difference in SDNN (p = .09) nor quality of life (p = .08), was found between baseline and follow-up. A combination of HRV biofeedback and breathing retraining may improve exercise
tolerance in patients with HF with an LVEF of 31% or higher. Because exercise tolerance is considered a strong prognostic
indicator, cardiorespiratory biofeedback has the potential to improve cardiac mortality and morbidity in HF patients.

The etiological tinnitus models propose that suffering can be caused and aggravated by heightened physiological arousal. Therefore
psychophysiological treatments are applied. Stability of the measured parameters is essential for the use of biofeedback as
well as to permit the attribution of changes to the administered treatment. The aim of our study was to investigate the 3-month
reproducibility of psychophysiological parameters in 60 tinnitus patients. Using a repeated-measures design, the activity
of these parameters was assessed twice during various stress and relaxation trials. The results showed that the measurements
of frontalis, masseter and trapezius muscles were stable, while for the sternocleidomastoid, the skin conductance level (SCL)
and the skin temperature retest-stability could not be evidenced. For all parameters, test–retest stability was weak for the
relative scores. In conclusion, our study has important implications for applied psychophysiology research: (1) the measurement
of EMG assessed in a clinical sample is stable over a 3-month interval; (2) in contrast, the measurements of SCL and skin
temperature as well as all relative scores are less stable; and (3) the stability of EMG-parameters in our sample gives first
hints that physiological changes can be attributed to an administered biofeedback treatment but further research is required.

An interferometer that measures the refractive index changes due to bacterial metabolism is described. The apparatus permits
simultaneous and real time measurement of bacterial growth in several samples of slowly growing mycobacteria. The error sources
are discussed and the sensitivity of the apparatus is tested. For the species Mycobacterium bovis BCG and M. smegmatis, a relation between refractive index change and bacterial concentration is determined experimentally and the time constant
of bacterial growth is measured.

We propose a new retina simulation software, called Virtual Retina, which transforms a video into spike trains. Our goal is twofold: Allow large scale simulations (up to 100,000 neurons) in
reasonable processing times and keep a strong biological plausibility, taking into account implementation constraints. The
underlying model includes a linear model of filtering in the Outer Plexiform Layer, a shunting feedback at the level of bipolar
cells accounting for rapid contrast gain control, and a spike generation process modeling ganglion cells. We prove the pertinence
of our software by reproducing several experimental measurements from single ganglion cells such as cat X and Y cells. This
software will be an evolutionary tool for neuroscientists that need realistic large-scale input spike trains in subsequent
treatments, and for educational purposes.

To our knowledge, this paper is the first record/report of a juvenile light-coloured Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) at Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island in January 1998, determining that it was an albino individual. Based on available literature,
three cases of albino seals have been reported exclusively for Harbour seal pups, and no albino has been reported for Antarctic
pagophilic true seals. Therefore, this is the first confirmed case of albinism in Antarctic pagophilic true seals species,
indicating that this phenomenon is indeed of a rare occurrence.

There is a continuing controversy over Native American fishing and hunting rights. We show that Native American (Menominee)
and European American fish experts have a common knowledge base and share values and attitudes associated with fishing practices
(though organized around different ethical principles). Nonetheless, perceived group differences are dramatic (especially European American perceptions of Native Americans). Cultural differences in models
of nature and associated inference processes appear to mediate these stereotypes and may hold the key to reducing intergroup
conflict over resources.

The sexual pattern and sexual development of the leopard grouper, Mycteroperca rosacea, were investigated from 483 specimens collected from the Gulf of California, Mexico. Histological and population data indicated
a gonochoric sexual pattern. Some juveniles passed through an immature bisexual phase of gonadal development, but no evidence
of post-maturational sex change was found. The immature bisexual phase is believed to be associated only with male development.
The size distribution and size at sexual maturity were similar for both males and females. In accordance with predictions
of the size-advantage model, the gonochoric sexual pattern of M. rosacea is likely influenced by its group-spawning mating system.
