The prevailing general theory of entrainment of endogenous circadian rhythms explains variation in the timing of activity with season, latitude and weather conditions on the basis of the dependence of spontaneous frequency of the rhythm on the intensity of constant illumination. In an experiment designed to test the validity of this theory, Greenfinches and chaffinches were exposed to the natural light-dark cycle alternately in full illumination and in reduced daylight. Contrary to prediction by current hypotheses for these species, in which the spontaneous frequency decreases with decreasing light intensity, their midpoint of daily activity shifted forward when the intensity of natural daylight was reduced. This result refutes the hypothesis that light affects the timing of activity in nature in a manner predictable from its effect in constant conditions.
Both species of finches have a bimodal daily distribution of perch-hopping activity. The morning peak and evening peak of activity are of about equal strength in winter, but the morning peak increases sharply in the reproductive season. The possibility that the two peaks represent two pacemaker systems, under differential endocrine control, is discussed.
The precision in the timing of daily onset and end of activity is positively correlated with the estimated average rate of change of light intensity at these times of day. Thus, day-to-day variations are markedly increased in reduced daylight when activity begins late after sunrise and terminates well before sunset.  相似文献

Pyramimonas mucifera sp. nov., a punctate species of the genus, is unusual both behaviorally and at the fine structural level. It forms two distinct populations in culture, one benthic and one planktonic. Planktonic forms are more conventional for the genus, but benthic forms are found in loosely packed mucilage, have flagellar rather than ciliary beating of the flagella, and display a higher degree of metaboly. Ultrastructurally this species is unusual in that it has a unique scale complement and the cells contain numerous muciferous vesicles, leaving only small pockets of cytoplasm containing the usual organelles. This species has a 3–1 type flagellar apparatus but has an additional fibrillar band, a 4–3-2–3 microtubular root system and a flexible synistosome. The discovery of a mucilage-producing species of Pyramimonas draws attention to possible links with other prasinophytes (Halosphaera) and green algae of questionable affiliation (Oltmannsiellopsis and Hafniomonas). It also provides a model of the primitive pyramimonad.  相似文献

During daytime low tides, sediment-inhabiting populations of Euglena proxima Dangeard migrate to the surface of intertidal sand flats to form large monospecific green patches near the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. The effect of incident irradiance on the upward migration of E. proxima was studied by shading the sediment surface in the field with neutral density filters to 2, 20, 55, and 100% incident irradiance. The results of these in situ experiments revealed that E. proxima 's upward migration, as measured by population density or chl a concentration, was stimulated by decreasing incident irradiance: population densities and chl a concentrations on the sediment surface at 2% incident irradiance were greater statistically than at 100% full sunlight. In situ measurements of photosynthesis were performed by incubating 3-mL aliquots of a cell suspension in scintillation vials containing 14C inorganic carbon beneath neutral density filters. These experiments revealed that E. proxima exhibited photoinhibition at 100% full sunlight, but this depression in photosynthetic performance at high light was absent when the cells were incubated in vials containing acid-cleaned sediment. This amelioration of photoinhibition in vials containing sediment is most likely due to the downward migration of the population away from photoinhibitory light levels. These results cannot be interpreted as strictly photic effects because the temperature of the vials varied with the light treatment. The results of this study suggest that the vertical migration behavior of E. proxima and its photosynthetic physiology are intimately linked. Vertical migration provides a mechanism to deal with short-term changes in irradiance and avoid photoinhibitory light levels.  相似文献

Petiolar, bracteolar, and stipular glands from two varieties of Passiflora foetida were studied by both light and electron microscopy. These glands have previously been called nectaries. They do resemble the sugar-secreting glands of other Passiflora species with respect to their location and morphology. However, cytological studies together with chemical tests of the exudate support the view that the glands in the varieties studied actually secrete a resin-like substance which possibly functions as an anti-herbivore mechanism.  相似文献

Nephroselmis spinosa Suda sp. nov. is described based on LM and EM observations. Two strains of N. spinosa (S222 and SD959‐3) were isolated from sand samples collected from the northwest coast of western Australia. The cells were remarkably right–left flattened and appeared ellipse or bean‐shaped when viewed from their right or left side. A single, parietal, crescent chloroplast was pale green to yellowish green and contained one conspicuous eyespot in its anterior ventral edge near the base of the short flagellum. A pyrenoid with three starch plates was located at the dorsal of the chloroplast. The cells divided by transverse binary cell division, as is common in other species of this genus. This alga possessed four types of body scales, and three scale types were similar to N. olivacea Stein and N. astigmatica Inouye & Pienaar. However, the fourth and outermost scale type was distinctive because although it was a spiny stellate scale with nine spines, one of them extended about 1 μm and was slightly curved with a hook at the end. This scale morphology, an important taxonomic characteristic, has never been described for the genus Nephroselmis. The cell's morphology, pyrenoid structure, hair scales, and cell size were distinctive from previously described Nephroselmis species, and its unique scale characteristic led me to name this newly proposed species “spinosa,” meaning spiny.  相似文献

The effects of different temperatures and light intensities on growth, pigments, sugars, lipids, and proteins, as well as on some antioxidant and proteolytic enzymes of Trachydiscus minutus (Bourr.) H. Ettl, were investigated. The optimum growth temperature and light intensity were 25°C and 2 × 132 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, respectively. Under these conditions, proteins were the main biomass components (33.45% dry weight [dwt]), with high levels of carbohydrates (29% dwt) and lipids (21.77% dwt). T. minutus tolerated temperatures between 20°C and 32°C, with only moderate changes in cell growth and biochemical composition. Extremely low (15°C) and high (40°C) temperatures decreased chl and RUBISCO contents and inhibited cell growth. The biochemical response of the alga to both unfavorable conditions was an increase in lipid content (up to 35.19% dwt) and a decrease in carbohydrates (down to 13.64% dwt) with much less of a change in total protein content (in the range of 30.51%–38.13% dwt). At the same time, the defense system of T. minutus was regulated differently in response to heat or cold treatments. Generally, at 40°C, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and proteases were drastically elevated, and three polypeptides were overexpressed, whereas the glutathione reductase (GR) and peroxidase (POD) activities were reduced. In contrast, at 15°C, all these enzymes except GR were suppressed. The effect of light was to enhance or decrease the temperature stress responses, depending on intensity. Our studies demonstrate the broad temperature adaptability of T. minutus as well as the potential for the production of valuable algal biomass.  相似文献

The acclimation of the photosynthetic apparatus of Palmaria palmata (L.) to light intensity was examined in the field and under laboratory conditions. Algae from 3 different shore levels and from laboratory cultures adapted to 6 different photon flux densities were compared. This was done on the basis of light doses, which were delivered by different light regimes in the field and in the laboratory. Laboratory samples were adjusted to constant photon flux densities between 7 and 569 μmol photons·m ? 2·s ? 1 in a 16:8 light:dark photoperiod. Under field conditions the daily amplitudes reached up to approximately 2000 μmol photons·m ? 2·s ? 1 within a natural daily light course. Over the course of 14 days the light doses resulting from those different regimes are similar for both treatments. An increasing growth rate per day with increasing light doses was observed in the laboratory. Growth was saturated at 113 mol photons·m ? 2·14 d ? 1. Light saturation points (Ek) of photosynthesis increased with increasing light doses for both field and laboratory samples, and all Ek values were significantly related to the growth light dose. A correlation between fresh weight‐related lutein content and growth light dose was found for laboratory samples only, whereas the lutein:chlorophyll a (chl a) ratio was strongly correlated with Ek for laboratory and field samples. The content of chl a and phycoerythrin (PE) per fresh weight decreased significantly with increasing light doses under field conditions. Simultaneously, the PE:chl a ratio increased, whereas this ratio was not influenced by laboratory treatments. The correspondence of Ek values for field and laboratory treatments indicated that they were affected mainly by light dose. However, the variability in pigmentation was mainly dependent on temporal variability in light intensity (the amplitude of variations in incident light).  相似文献

The coccolithophore Algirosphaera robusta (Lohmann) R. E. Norris was isolated into laboratory culture for the first time. This species is of particular interest as the first deep photic coccolithophore to be cultured, the only member of the Rhabdosphaeraceae to have been successfully isolated, and the first coccolithophore with a coccolith structure including a complex disjunct central area to have been studied in detail. Observations on the culture strain supported the previous inference that the commonly recognized species A. robusta, A. oryza Schlauder, and A. quadricornu (J. Schiller) R. E. Norris are conspecific. However, A. meteora (Müller) R. E. Norris and A. cucullata (Lecal‐Schlauder) J. R. Young, Probert et Kleijne were recognized as discrete species. Coccolith rim formation in A. robusta follows the pattern of biomineralization documented in other heterococcoliths and was suggested to be universal. However, the prominent central hood had a unique ultrastructure and appeared to be formed by a distinctively different biomineralization mode. We suggest that this can provide a key to reinterpreting homology in coccolith structure and that this species is a promising target for comparative biochemical and genomic studies of biomineralization. In terms of cell ultrastructure, A. robusta exhibited marked similarities to Syracosphaera pulchra Lohmann, and a close evolutionary relationship between the families Rhabdosphaeraceae and Syracosphaeraceae is suggested.  相似文献

Calcifying and a noncalcifying strains of Emiliania huxleyi were cultured in nutrient replete turbidostats under a photon flux density (PFD) gradient from 50 to 600 μmol E·m?2·s?1. For both strains, growth was PFD‐saturated at 300 μmol E·m?2·s?1. The strains, although with clearly different physiological properties due to the presence or absence of calcification, showed the same trends and magnitude of change in their pigment compliment as a function of PFD. Light‐controlled pigment composition and the trends of change in pigment composition were identical in both strains. Fucoxanthin (Fuco) was the major carotenoid in the calcifying strain, while in the noncalcifying strain this role was assumed by 19′ hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (19 Hex). The photoprotective pigments and 19 Hex, normalized to chl a, increased with increasing light, while chl a content per cell and chl c's and Fuco, normalized to chl a, decreased with increasing PFD. The sum of all carotenoids normalized to chl a was remarkably similar in all PFDs used. Collectively, our results suggest that 19 Hex was synthesized from Fuco with light as a modulating factor and that the total amount of carotenoids is strain‐specific and synthesized/catabolized in tandem with chl a to a genetically predefined level independent of PFD.  相似文献

Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis (Nordstedt) Geitler cells grown under mixotrophic conditions exhibit a modified response to light. The maximal photosynthetic rate and the light saturation value of mixotrophic cultures were higher than those of the photoautotrophic cultures. Dark respiration and light compensation point were also significantly higher in the mixotrophically grown cells. As expected, the mixotrophic cultures grew faster and achieved a higher biomass concentration than the photoautotrophic cultures. In contrast, the growth rate of the photoautotrophic cultures was more sensitive to light. The differences between the two cultures were also apparent in their responses to exposure to high photon flux density of 3000 μmol·m 2·s 1. The light-dependent O2 evolution rate and the maximal efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry declined more rapidly in photoautotrophically grown than in mixotrophically grown cells as a result of exposure to high photon flux density. Although both cultures recovered from the high photon flux density stress, the mixotrophic culture recovered faster and to a higher extent. Based on the above results, growth of S. platensis with a fixed carbon source has a significant effect on photosynthetic activity.  相似文献

采用野外研究与室内研究相结合的方法研究了月光周期和光照对夜行性动物艾虎活动的影响。野外无线电遥测结果表明,艾虎的日活动时间不受月光周期的影响,雌雄艾虎在不同的季节及繁殖期和非繁殖期都有相对稳定的活动时间,其开始活动和结束活动的时间与月光周期和日出、日落都没有明显的相关性。室内模拟研究结果也表明,由于环境条件的变化,艾虎增加了白天的活动时间,但仍然以夜间活动为主,光照强弱对艾虎的活动格局和活动时间没有明显的影响。以上结果表明昼夜变换使艾虎形成了相对稳定的生物种节律,艾虎在取食过程中可能利用洞道等隐蔽场所降低明亮月光期的高捕食风险。  相似文献

Cryptomonas erosa Skuja, a planktonic alga, was grown in batch culture at different combinations of light intensity and temperature, under nutrient saturation. Growth was maximal (1.2 divisions · day?1) at 23.5 C and 0.043 ly · min?1, declining sharply with temperature (0.025 divisions-day?1 at 1 C). With decreasing temperature, the cells showed both light saturation and inhibition at much reduced light intensities. At the same time the compensation light intensity for growth declined towards a minimum of slightly above 0.4 × 10?4 ly · min?1 (~1 ft-c) at 1 C or <0.1 ly · day?1 (PAR). Cell division was more adversely affected by low temperature than carbon uptake, and the resulting excess production of photosynthate was both stored and excreted. Extreme storage of carbohydrates resulted in cell volumes and carbon content ca. 22 and 30 × greater, respectively, than the maxima observed for cells incubated in the dark, whereas, at growth inhibitory light levels, as much as 57% of the total assimilated carbon was excreted. A marked increase in cell pigment was observed at the lowest light levels (<10?3 ly · min?1), at high temperature. The growth response of C. erosa in culture provides insight into the abundance and distribution of cryptomonads and other small algal flagellates in nature.  相似文献

Impatiens pallida, a succulent annual herb of moist temperate forests, typically wilts on summer days after several minutes of direct sunlight. Time courses of gas exchange and leaf water potential were measured to determine if wilting resulted in substantially reduced photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, or leaf internal CO2 concentrations. Leaves quickly wilted with the onset of high-light, but photosynthesis and stomatal conductance increased markedly. Photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance declined slightly after several hours of high-light, and from morning to late afternoon shade conditions. Leaf internal CO2 declined with increased photosynthesis, but there was no evidence that stomatal conductance limited photosynthesis through the day. We propose that rapid wilting is an adaptation that facultatively limits heat loading and extreme water loss under high-light. Further whole plant studies in natural settings are needed to fully evaluate the quantitative significance of wilting in relation to water use and photosynthesis.  相似文献

 应用遥感技术可以建立光化学植被指数(Photochemical reflectance index, PRI)和光能利用效率(Light use efficiency, LUE)的关系,LUE可用来估算净初级生产力(Net primary productivity, NPP)。因而,用PRI估算植物的LUE,为估算NPP提供了新的方法,弥补了以往以经验模式通过温度和水分对最大LUE的胁迫来获取实际LUE的不足,进而可提高NPP的估算精度。研究表明:PRI和LUE在叶片、冠层和景观尺度上都有着很好的相关性,但是随着尺度的变化,很多因素会对这一关系产生干扰,如水分、氮元素含量、叶面积指数和太阳高度角等,从而削弱了PRI和LUE的关系。该文对建立PRI和LUE的关系过程中的影响因素进行了分析,并指出今后这一研究领域中可能改进的方面,主要包括526 nm 和545 nm 处的反射率对531 nm 处的反射率的作用机制、PRI随LUE的饱和现象、PRI和LUE关系的时间效应以及利用PRI估算LUE的尺度效应。  相似文献

The light-harvesting complex (LHC) of Giraudyopsis stellifer Dangeard was isolated on a sucrose density gradient after digitonin treatment, and the pigment composition was analyzed by reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. The LHC is a chlorophyll (Chl) a/c/ fucoxanthin/violaxanthin complex, depleted of β-carotene, comparable to the LHC of Fucophyceae. The excitation transfer from Chl c and fucoxanthin to Chl a is efficient in whole cells. Immunological reactions indicate a close relationship between Chrysophyceae and Fucophyceae. The immunocytochemical labeling confirms the lack of segregation of the LHC in the appressed membranes of the three associated thylakoids and its localization in the intrapyrenoid thylakoid. The violaxanthin-antheraxanthin-zeaxanthin cycle is operative in the cells and efficiently protects photosystem II reaction centers against photoinhibition.  相似文献

The light-saturated rate of photosynthesis in blue light was 50-100% higher than that in red light for young sporophytes of Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lamour., although photosynthetic rates were slightly higher in red than in blue light at low irradiances. Short exposures to low irradiances (e.g. 2 min at 20 μmol · m?2· s?1) of blue light also stimulated the subsequent photosynthesis of Laminaria sporophytes in saturating irradiances of red light but had little effect on photosynthesis in low irradiances of red light. The full stimulatory effect of short exposures to blue light was observed within 5 min of the blue treatment and persisted for at least 15 min in red light or in darkness. Thereafter, the effect began to decline, but some stimulation was still detectable 45 min after the blue treatment. The degree of stimulation was proportional to the logarithm of the photon exposure to blue light over the range 0.15-2.4 mmol · m?2, and the effectiveness of an exposure to 0.6 mmol · m?2at different wavelengths was high at 402-475 nm (with a peak at 460-475 nm) but declined sharply at 475-497 nm and was minimal at 544-701 nm. Blue light appears, therefore, to exert a direct effect on the dark reaction of photosynthesis in brown algae, possibly by activating carbon-fixing enzymes or by stimulating the uptake or transport of inorganic carbon in the plants.  相似文献
