A total of 298 Ixodes ricinus (L.) ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) feeding on humans in the Czech Republic were tested for borreliae (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) by darkfield microscopy between 1997 and 2003. A majority (68%) of the supplied I. ricinus ticks were nymphs, 25% were females and 7% were larvae. Overall, 20% of 74 examined females and 9% of 203 examined nymphs (but none of 21 examined larvae) were infected with borreliae. The proportion of ticks with a high infection load (>100 spirochetes) was 4% in females and 2% in nymphal I. ricinus. During the year, the highest numbers and proportions of infected nymphal and female ticks were taken from humans in June. Detection of borreliae in the ticks feeding on humans might be helpful in the prophylaxis of Lyme borreliosis.  相似文献

Abstract. Four species of ticks found to infest 1391 American mink (Mustela vison) in Britain in five years were, in declining order of frequency, Ixodes hexagonus, Ixodes canisuga, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes acuminatus. Ixodes hexagonus and I.canisuga occurred on 40% and 2.5% of mink respectively. Infestation rates (the proportion of infested mink) of adult females, nymphs and larvae were similar and tended to be lower in summer. The distribution of infestation size (the number of ticks per host) for adult females describes a negative binomial. The mean infestation size of nymphs varied with the sex of the host and was 5.2 for males and 4.2 for females. Mink are competent hosts for /. hexagonus.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the infection level of adult forms and larvae of ticks and mosquitoes with Borrelia burgdorferi in the forested areas of Szczecin. A total of 1699 ticks Ixodes ricinus, including 1422 nymphs, 277 adult forms and 2862 mosquito females representing the genera Aedes (89.6%) and Culex (10.4%) were collected between the years 2004 and 2005. A further 3746 larvae and 1596 pupae of Culex pipiens pipiens were colleted from water bodies. Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. was detected in the arthropods by the method of indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). A positive immunological reaction was detected in 16.6% of the adult forms and in 16.5% of the nymphs of Ixodes ricinus. Spirochetes were also detected in 1.7% of mosquito females, 3.2% of larvae and in 1.6% of pupae of Culex pipiens pipiens. The results of the present study confirm that contact with ticks constitutes the main risk of contracting Lyme disease, although mosquitoes play a role as vectors as well.  相似文献

A total of 2647 ticks of the genus Ixodes was sampled by flagging the vegetation in thirty-one sites in eastern Jutland, Denmark. All ticks were identified as Ixodes ricinus Linnaeus. A total of 317 ticks (202 nymphs and 115 adults) from three different sites were examined for the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson et al. by indirect fluorescent antibody staining; the frequency of infection varied from 7% to 22%. It is concluded that I. ricinus, known to be the most common tick in Denmark, is the vector largely responsible for the transmission of B. burgdorferi in this country.  相似文献

To determine whether replete subadult Ixodes ticks detach more frequently from resting than from active hosts, diverse rodents and lizards were caged in an apparatus designed to record the ticks' sites of detachment relative to the resting site of the host. Replete larval Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes dammini accumulated mainly beneath the resting places of the mice (Apodemus agrarius and Peromyscus leucopus) most frequently parasitized in nature. Although nymphal I. ricinus similarly detached where these mice rested, nymphal I. dammini detached more randomly. When lizards were used as hosts, both subadult stages of I. ricinus tended to detach away from their main resting sites; these ticks detached from squirrels more randomly. Detachment ratios for other rodent hosts, that are abundantly infested by the larvae of these ticks in nature (Apodemus flavicollis and Clethrionomys glareolus), could not be derived because nymphs generally failed to attach. Our observations are consistent with reports that both subadult stages of I. dammini, but not the adult, feed on the same kind of nest-dwelling hosts and that the host range of I. ricinus is less focused. Detachment of mouse-feeding larvae from resting mice promotes subsequent nymphal attachment to conspecific hosts, and the absence of such behavior among nymphs facilitates access of the resulting adults to deer.  相似文献

Infestation by Ixodes ricinus ticks on rodents, hares and cervids was examined at Bogesund, 10 km north of Stockholm, in south-central Sweden during 1991-1994 and on varying hares (Lepus timidus) at Stora Karlso and Gotska Sandon in the Baltic Sea during 1992-1993. At Bogesund, there were great differences between two consecutive years in the number of I. ricinus larvae infesting bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus). The seasonal pattern of infestation by I. ricinus larvae and nymphs on bank voles was unimodal in 1991, with peaks in June-July and bimodal in 1992, with peaks in June and August. Male bank voles, compared to females and older voles, compared to young voles, harboured greater numbers of I. ricinus ticks. Apodemus mice, compared to bank voles, harboured greater numbers of I. ricinus ticks. Ixodes ricinus larvae engorged on Apodemus mice were heavier than larvae engorged on bank voles and resulted in larger nymphs. However, there was no difference in the proportions of viable nymphs resulting from larvae engorged on mice or voles. The ranges in the numbers of I. ricinus ticks infesting individual hosts were 1-451 for rodents, 16-2374 for hares and 428-2072 for roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). These ranges of tick numbers are estimated to represent potential blood losses from individual hosts of approximately 0.2-65% for rodents, 0.2-13% for hares and 0.3-9.0% for roe deer. Within the populations of all host species examined, the distributions of all stages of I. ricinus were clumped, with most host individuals harbouring few ticks and only a few individuals harbouring many ticks. The data suggest that, even though a small proportion of tick hosts may be severely affected, the direct effects of feeding by I. ricinus are unlikely to play an important role on mammal population dynamics.  相似文献

SUMMARY The mainstream forestry policy in many European countries is to convert coniferous plantations into (semi-natural) deciduous woodlands. However, woodlands are the main habitat for Ixodes ricinus ticks. Therefore, assessing to what extent tick abundance and infection with Borrelia spirochetes are affected by forest composition and structure is a prerequisite for effective prevention of Lyme borreliosis. We selected a total of 25 pine and oak stands, both with and without an abundant shrub layer, in northern Belgium and estimated tick abundance between April and October 2008-2010. Additionally, the presence of deer beds was used as an indicator of relative deer habitat use. Borrelia infections in questing nymphs were determined by polymerase chain reactions. The abundance of larvae, nymphs, and adults was higher in oak stands compared to pine stands and increased with increasing shrub cover, most likely due to differences in habitat use by the ticks' main hosts. Whereas tick abundance was markedly higher in structure-rich oak stands compared to homogeneous pine stands, the Borrelia infection rates in nymphs did not differ significantly. Our results indicate that conversion towards structure-rich deciduous forests might create more suitable tick habitats, but we were unable to detect an effect on the infection rate.  相似文献

Due to the high Lyme borreliosis incidence in Alsace, in northeastern France, we investigated in 2003-2004 three cantons in this region in order to determine the density of Ixodes ricinus ticks infected by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasmataceae. The peak density of nymphs infected by B. burgdorferi sensu lato at Munster and Guebwiller, where the disease incidence was high, was among the highest reported in Europe (105 and 114 per 100 m(2), respectively). In contrast, the peak density of infected nymphs was low in the canton of Dannemarie (5/100 m(2)), where the disease incidence was low. The two main species detected in ticks were Borrelia afzelii, more frequent in nymphs, and Borrelia garinii, more frequent in adult ticks. The rates of tick infection by Anaplasma phagocytophilum were 0.4% and 1.2% in nymphs and adults, respectively.  相似文献

Host-seeking Ixodes ricinus (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) were monitored for borreliae (Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.) using dark-field microscopy in South Moravia (Czech Republic) each May from 1991 to 2001 (150 nymphs, 100 females and 100 males each year). This survey revealed a mean annual percentage of infected ticks of 16.8% (range, 11.7-24.2) in nymphs, 24.9% (range, 16.5-33.6) in females and 26.1% (range, 17.1-37.3) in males. Annual incidence of Lyme borreliosis in humans of the area in the same period (range, 8.7-41.7 per 100,000) correlated significantly with the frequency (number of ticks per flag per hour) of nymphs infected with >50 borreliae or all nymphal ticks, but not with the frequency of females, infected females or the infection rate (% of ticks infected) of either nymphal or female ticks. A prediction of the annual incidence of Lyme borreliosis, based on the frequency of heavily infected or all nymphal I. ricinus ticks, is feasible. The infection rate in I. ricinus correlated significantly with the North Atlantic Oscillation winter index of the last year (in nymphs) or of the year before last (in adults).  相似文献

The present study was carried out in a protected wooded area, which is part of the Parco Regionale Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, one of the most important ecological reserves in southern Italy. From April 2010 to April 2011, 212 birds, comprising 22 species from 12 families, were captured and examined for ticks. A total of 75 (35.4?%) birds were found infested by ticks, with 451 ticks being collected. All ticks were identified as Ixodes ricinus, of which 241 (53.4?%) were larvae and 210 nymphs (46.6?%). The highest intensity of infestation was found in April 2010, when 117 ticks were retrieved on 25 birds. No ticks were found on birds (n?=?5) netted in December 2010. High infestation rates were recorded on blackbirds (Turdus merula) (90 %; 29 birds examined) and on mistle thrushes (Turdus viscivorus) (100?%; 2 birds examined). The highest intensity of infestation by larvae was found on wrens (5.6 larvae/bird) and by nymphs on mistle thrushes (11.5 nymphs/bird). Temperature and number of hours of light showed to influence the activity of larvae and nymphs. These data support the notion that birds may be responsible for the heterogeneous distribution of I. ricinus in Europe, thus playing a role in the epidemiology of certain tick-borne pathogens.  相似文献

Ixodes ricinus L. (Acari: Ixodida) were sampled during 1996-99 in southern Scotland, on vegetation using cloth drags, on humans by removal from clothing and on roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) by searching legs of culled deer. Developmental microclimate was recorded by automatic recorders and questing microclimate by portable instruments during tick collections. Ticks and deer were examined for infection with Ehrlichia phagocytophila bacteria (Rickettsiales) using microscopy and polymerase chain reaction. This pathogen causes tick-borne fever of sheep in Europe and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis in North America, but in Europe human clinical ehrlichiosis due to E. phagocytophila has not been recorded despite serological evidence of exposure. Among three types of habitat, coniferous woodland was most infested with questing ticks (560 ticks/km of drag; mean numbers collected on long trousers: 24.3 larvae, 13.5 nymphs and 0.8 adult ticks/km walked), deciduous woodland had slightly lower infestation (426 ticks/km drag) and upland sheep pasture had much lower infestation (220 ticks/km drag). Of the three main vegetation types, bracken was least infested (360 ticks/km drag), ericas most (430 ticks/km drag) and grassland had intermediate infestation density (413 ticks/km drag). Questing and developmental microclimates were poor predictors of exposure within these habitats, except lower infestation of pastures was attributed to greater illumination there. Collectors who walked a total of 300 km through all habitats (taking 360 h in all seasons), wearing cotton trousers hanging outside rubber boots, were bitten by only four nymphs and 11 larvae of I. ricinus (but no adult ticks). There was a negative correlation between densities of deer and ticks collected, although presence of deer remains a major indicator of exposure. The proportion of infected ticks was fairly uniform at four sites studied. Overall prevalence of E. phagocytophila in I. ricinus was 3.3% in nymphs (40/1203) but only approximately 1.5% in adults of both sexes (although males do not bite). It was estimated that nymphs of I. ricinus gave 4.4% probability of one infected bite/person/year (for occupational exposure during this research) due to presence in all seasons and habitats, their human biting rate of 0.011 nymphs/h or 0.013 nymphs/km and widespread infection with E. phagocytophila. The frequency distribution of intensity of infection in ticks was approximately normal (mean 98 morulae/nymph infected), thus there is a high risk of receiving a high dose from any one infected tick bite.  相似文献

Five calves were given an intraruminal bolus orally, designed to release ivermectin for 120 days at the rate of 8 mg/day. This is equivalent to a dose of 40 micrograms/kg/day for a calf expected to weigh 200 kg at the end of the delivery period. Five control calves were given a placebo bolus. On days 7 and 36 after treatment ten nymphs and ten adult female Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus 1758) were placed in ear bags on the calves. The engorgement rates were monitored for 10 days and subsequent egg production and hatching percentages determined. There were no significant differences between treatment groups for female mortality. However, ivermectin treatment significantly reduced the numbers and weights of engorged females, females laying eggs, and the number of larvae produced on the treated calves was reduced to 3% of that of the control group. The effects on nymphs, although similar, were less consistent than on adults.  相似文献

In Europe, Borrelia burgdorferi genospecies causing Lyme borreliosis are mainly transmitted by the tick Ixodes ricinus. Since its discovery, B. burgdorferi has been the subject of many epidemiological studies to determine its prevalence and the distribution of the different genospecies in ticks. In the current study we systematically reviewed the literature on epidemiological studies of I. ricinus ticks infected with B. burgdorferi sensu lato. A total of 1,186 abstracts in English published from 1984 to 2003 were identified by a PubMed keyword search and from the compiled article references. A multistep filter process was used to select relevant articles; 110 articles from 24 countries contained data on the rates of infection of I. ricinus with Borrelia in Europe (112,579 ticks), and 44 articles from 21 countries included species-specific analyses (3,273 positive ticks). These data were used to evaluate the overall rate of infection of I. ricinus with Borrelia genospecies, regional distributions within Europe, and changes over time, as well as the influence of different detection methods on the infection rate. While the infection rate was significantly higher in adults (18.6%) than in nymphs (10.1%), no effect of detection method, tick gender, or collection period (1986 to 1993 versus 1994 to 2002) was found. The highest rates of infection of I. ricinus were found in countries in central Europe. B. afzelii and B. garinii are the most common Borrelia species, but the distribution of genospecies seems to vary in different regions in Europe. The most frequent coinfection by Borrelia species was found for B. garinii and B. valaisiana.  相似文献

A total of 305 Ixodes ricinus ticks (243 nymphs and 62 adults) were collected from three different regions of Thuringia in Middle Germany which are known to be endemic for Borrelia burgdorferi. Our aim was to investigate the carrier rate of ticks for granulocytic Ehrlichia species. The presence of ehrlichial 16S ribosomal DNA was investigated by polymerase chain reaction. Using primers specific for the Ehrlichia phagocytophila group PCR fragments of 151 bp and 943 bp, respectively, were produced in positive samples. Adult ticks showed a significantly higher infection rate (4/62; 6.5%) compared to nymphs (3/243; 1.2%). Prevalence rates varied between 0 and 3.8% regarding the different areas under investigation. The nucleotide sequences showed high similarity (between 97.5% and 99% identity) to the known sequences of the three E. phagocytophila group members HGE agent, E. phagocytophila and Ehrlichia equi. The sequence data did not allow a final classification to a particular member of this group.  相似文献

Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected by random collections from western and central Slovakia during the years 1996-98. The midgut content of 240 ticks was examined by dark-field microscopy and submitted for cultivation for the presence of borrelias. Spirochetes were found in 21 unfed and host-seeking adults and nymphs (8.8%). By the analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) one sample from unfed I. ricinus male from western Slovakia was identified as a triple infection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii and B. afzelii. The simultaneous presence of different B. burgdorferi genospecies in one midgut sample (triple infection in the tick) could be observed only after the multipart amplification of denaturated DNA and subsequent pooling of the products for further analysis.  相似文献

Environmental factors may drive tick ecology and therefore tick-borne pathogen (TBP) epidemiology, which determines the risk to animals and humans of becoming infected by TBPs. For this reason, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of environmental factors on the abundance of immature-stage Ixodes ricinus ticks and on the prevalence of two zoonotic I. ricinus-borne pathogens in natural foci of endemicity. I. ricinus abundance was measured at nine sites in the northern Iberian Peninsula by dragging the vegetation with a cotton flannelette, and ungulate abundance was measured by means of dung counts. In addition to ungulate abundance, data on variables related to spatial location, climate, and soil were gathered from the study sites. I. ricinus adults, nymphs, and larvae were collected from the vegetation, and a representative subsample of I. ricinus nymphs from each study site was analyzed by PCR for the detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA. Mean prevalences of these pathogens were 4.0% ± 1.8% and 20.5% ± 3.7%, respectively. Statistical analyses confirmed the influence of spatial factors, climate, and ungulate abundance on I. ricinus larva abundance, while nymph abundance was related only to climate. Interestingly, cattle abundance rather than deer abundance was the main driver of B. burgdorferi sensu lato and A. phagocytophilum prevalence in I. ricinus nymphs in the study sites, where both domestic and wild ungulates coexist. The increasing abundance of cattle seems to increase the risk of other hosts becoming infected by A. phagocytophilum, while reducing the risk of being infected by B. burgdorferi sensu lato. Controlling ticks in cattle in areas where they coexist with wild ungulates would be more effective for TBP control than reducing ungulate abundance.  相似文献

The Rambouillet Forest, a Lyme disease-endemic area near Paris, France, was surveyed from September 1994 to October 1995 to determine the risk periods and zones for humans. Firstly, during the period of Ixodes ricinus activity, abundance of nymphs is greater in spring than in autumn. Secondly, we observed significant variation in nymphal abundance between zones according to the density of cervids. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in 461 unfed nymphs. DNA was detected in 38 nymphs (8.2%). By genospecific PCR based on the OspA gene, we detected the three pathogenic spirochetes with occurrences of 10.3, 31.1 and 58.6 for B. burgdorferi s.s., Borrelia garinii and Borrelia afzelii, respectively, indicating that B. afzelii is probably the main Borrelia species in the Rambouillet Forest. Finally, 11.5% of positive nymphs exhibited a double infection. Infection rates of I. ricinus nymphs by B. burgdorferi s.l. were not significantly different throughout the year for a given area, indicating that the risk periods of acquiring Lyme disease are mainly linked to nymph activity and correspond to spring and autumn. Likewise infection rates of nymphs were not significantly different between zones with a high density of deer (more than 100 animals per 100 ha) and zones with lower deer density (less than 20 animals per 100 ha). Ixodid tick abundance was investigated in the Basque region in Spain in two 1-year longitudinal studies, in 1992-1993 and 2003-2004. Forty zones were visited monthly and 162 672 ticks (87% larvae, 12% nymphs and 1% adults) were collected by blanket dragging. Eleven tick species belonging to the genera Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, Rhipicephalus and Dermacentor were identified including Haemaphysalis concinna Koch, which had not previously been reported in Spain. Tick species abundance differed between zones, studies and seasons. In 1992-1993, Haemaphysalis punctata Canestrini & Fanzago was the predominant species and distinct spring-summer and autumn-early winter peaks of activity were observed. In 2003-2004, Ixodes ricinus (Linneaus) was the most common species and was active throughout the winter. Larval and nymph seasonal activity patterns coincided in both 1993 and 2003 and this could facilitate co-feeding transmission of pathogens. Higher tick abundance was associated with increased livestock abundance in 1992-1993 and milder winter temperatures in 2003-2004. Tick collection rates in areas with moderate and high tick density were positively associated with the interaction between ambient temperature at sampling and rainfall 7 days prior to sampling. Collection rates were also significantly higher at medium rather than higher altitude, in forested areas than in open grasslands and lower in recreational areas frequented by people and with wet vegetation at sampling.  相似文献

Contrary to current opinion, fully engorged and detached larvae and nymphs of some ixodid ticks consistently take up substantial amounts of atmospheric water vapour and thereby display their regulative capacity for maintaining water balance in subsaturated air. Net uptake of vapour generally begins some days after detachment and the capability persists until shortly after initiation of apolysis, a period which in diapausing specimens may extend up to several months. This was shown forIxodes ricinus, Haemaphysalis punctata, and the North AmericanI. dammini. Apparently, some other engorged ixodid immatures fail to exhibit net vapour uptake, as was shown for both larvae and nymphs ofDermacentor marginatus and nymphs ofHyalomma anatolicum excavatum. But there is some evidence for engorged nymphs ofD. marginatus that active uptake of vapour does occur, masked by spiracular transpiration. Net uptake of vapour is apparently not possible during the pharate phases. InI. ricinus both teneral nymphs and adults are capable of achieving net water gains by active vapour uptake on the first day following ecdysis. There is new evidence from fully engorgedI. ricinus immatures for the decisive role of agranular alveoli in the production of the salivary secretion involved in vapour uptake.  相似文献

Simultaneous but separate feeding of ticks on nonviremic animal (guinea pig) has shown that Amblyomminae ticks are practically unable to transmit distantly tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) to the specimens of their own subfamily and to Ixodinae as well. Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus displayed their ability as donors and recipients of TBEV (adults and nymphs) not only for their own subfamily representatives but also as donors for recipients of Amblyomminae subfamily (nymphs and adults of Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus and nymphs of Haemaphysalis). Experimental and literature data analysis permits the authors to conclude that the very important role of TBEV circulation in nature belongs to the distant virus transmission. The absence of such type of virus exchange among Amblyomminae excludes this group of ticks from active virus circulation in TBEV foci.  相似文献
