The arrangement of plants within revegetated sites is rarely considered an important characteristic of these communities. However, in natural systems, plant spatial arrangements can influence a range of ecological processes, including pollination and seed set. Pollinators tend to preferentially visit larger and/or more closely spaced populations, with plants in these populations generally receiving more outcrossed pollen, resulting in increased seed set and better quality seed. Similar trends may occur in revegetated populations, but little is known about the influence of planting arrangement on seed production in restored systems. Here, we quantified the effect of plant abundance (number of conspecifics within 100 m) and distance to nearest reproductive conspecific on the level of seed set for six eucalypt species (n = 422 trees in total) in 1 year and for one of these species (Eucalyptus leucoxylon), across three additional years. Seed number per fruit was highly variable both between individuals and within individuals across years. Despite this variability, there was a consistent trend of higher seed production (seed number per fruit) when another reproductive conspecific was within 20 m. In contrast, plant abundance had little influence on seed production. Further investigation of nearest neighbor arrangements found the distance to either the first, second, third, or fourth reproductive neighbors were the key predictors of seed production. Therefore, revegetation designs that consider plant spacing and aggregation, rather than only planting to overall density criteria (i.e. trees/ha), at least for the eucalypts studied here, has the potential to improve seed production in revegetated populations.  相似文献

The structure and dynamics of approximately 64 ha of undisturbed gallery forest were studied over six years. Trees from 31 cm gbh (c. 10 cm dbh) were measured every three years from 1985. They were in 151 (10×20 m) permanent plots in the Gama forest in the Federal District of Brazil. Natural regeneration (individuals under 31 cm gbh) was measured in subplots (of 2×2 m, 5×5 m and 10×10 m) within the 200 m2 plots. The total tree flora (gbh31 cm) consisted of 93 species, 81 genera and 44 families in 1985. The Leguminosae, Myrtaceae and Rubiaceae were the families richest in number of species. Most individuals and species were under 45 cm diameter and 20 m high while the maximum diameter per species ranged from 30 to 95 cm. The density structure of trees and natural regeneration was similar, in which the densities of c. 80% of the species represented less than 1% of the total density. The periodic mean annual diameter increment for trees from 10 cm dbh, was c. 0.25 cm/year. Variability was high with coefficients of variation c. 100% or more. The Gama community may maintain tree diversity and structure in undisturbed conditions. Regeneration of c. 80% of the species was found in the establishing phase (poles); the diameter structure was typical of native forests with the number of individuals decreasing with increasing size classes and showing little change over the six years; recruitment compensated for the mortality of most of the abundant species. The soils in Gama gallery forest were dystrophic with high aluminium content. Multivariate analysis suggested the stream, natural gaps and edges as the main causes of floristic differentiation at the community level.  相似文献

A typical feature of the populations of small mammals in different areas of the Saratov Trans-Volga region is the long-term and constantly increasing abundance of Sylvaemus uralensis and its wide distribution in a variety of habitats. The maximal abundance of S. uralensis is 72.0 individuals per 100 trap-days, and its share in catches is 73.0%. The abundance of Microtus arvalis tends to increase. It was shown that Lagurus lagurus has been found again in the steppe zone, on fallow lands and fields, after a prolonged depression in 2012–2013, the average density of species being 4.0 individuals per 100 trap-days. A high abundance of other typical steppe inhabitants (Allocricetulus eversmanni and Ellobius talpinus) was noted as well. The highest indices of species diversity (H = 1.18) are typical of fallow lands.  相似文献

Fifteen sites on nine second- and third-order streams in the Mount Cameroon area, with varying degrees of human disturbance, were sampled during wet and dry seasons over 21 months in 2003–2005 to estimate their potential for sustainable exploitation of ornamental fishes. In total, 35 species of fish representing 22 genera and 14 families were captured. By biotope, fish populations per 20 m averaged 528 ± 318.5 fish (8.0 ± 3.02 species) in runs, 86 ± 60.9 fish (2.4 ± 1.06 species) in riffles and 819 ± 480.0 fish (7.8 ± 3.15 species) in pools. Riffles contained significantly fewer individuals and species than either runs or pools. Shannon's index was similar for runs and pools, averaging 1.646 ± 0.429 and 1.548 ± 0.345, respectively, but differed significantly for riffles, averaging 0.652 ± 0.473. There were no significant differences in number of individual fish, number of species or Shannon's index among stream order or season, reflecting the stability of these ecosystems throughout the year. Regression of number of fish per 20 linear m of stream, number of species and Shannon's index against a subjective scale related to stream degradation was significant. In particular, the polluted Limbe River sites had significantly fewer individual fish, fewer species and a lower Shannon index across all biotopes than other sites. Fishing efficiency of local gears was estimated at 27% for easily captured species and 14% for the more difficult ones, and could be used to make relative estimates of fish abundance as a means of monitoring changes in fish abundance. Although species diversity in south-western Cameroon was high, typical of tropical streams globally, total abundance was low, and therefore it is unlikely that a profitable ornamental fish trade could be sustained on the basis of fish captured exclusively from the wild.  相似文献

Fitness traits that determine the reproductive ability of individuals and the persistence of populations are affected by drought stress. Medicago truncatula that commonly encounters drought stress in its natural area, and for which large natural diversity and genetic tools are available, is a suitable species to investigate genetic determinism of fitness traits under stress. In a common garden, three successive cycles of short drought stress were applied after flowering, during the reproductive stage that is the most susceptible to drought for that species. Ten genotypes derived from natural populations and a mapping population were used to investigate the genetic determinism of vegetative and reproductive traits as components of fitness. A large genetic variation was observed and transgressive genotypes (more resistant or more susceptible than the parental genotypes) were found in the mapping population. Fitness traits were reduced by 5–74% in drought condition compared to well-watered condition. The most affected characters were total pod number per plant and total pod weight per plant. A total of 49 QTL, explaining between 6 and 38% of phenotypic variation for vegetative and reproductive fitness traits, were detected on all chromosomes except chromosome 6. A major QTL for flowering date (R 2 of 19 and 38%) that co-located with QTL for reproductive fitness traits were found on chromosome 7. In this study, no major QTL specific to drought-stressed or well-watered conditions were detected. We, thus, showed that QTL explaining fitness traits were numerous with small effects, in accordance with the genetic determinism of a complex trait.  相似文献

The species richness and seasonal development of planktonic ciliates were studied and compared in two shallow mesotrophic lakes, one covered with dense submerged macrophytes, the other macrophyte poor. Considerable differences in ciliate species composition, dominant taxa, abundance and biomass were observed. Ciliates were much more species rich in the macrophyte-rich lake, while they were more abundant numerically in the macrophyte-poor lake. Altogether, 96 species, included in 53 genera, 14 orders were identified. Among them, 80 species (included in 45 genera, 14 orders) observed from the macrophyte-rich lake, against 49 species (36 genera, 12 orders) were from the macrophyte-poor lake. In the macrophyte-rich lake, the mean abundance and biomass were 13.5 cells ml-1 and 547.10 g l-1 f.w.; abundance and biomass were higher in spring and winter; naked oligotrichs dominated total ciliate abundance and Peritrichida dominated the biomass. In the macrophyte-poor lake, ciliate mean abundance and biomass were 35.5 cells ml-1 and 953.39 g l-1 f.w.; abundances peaked in autumn; Scuticociliates dominated the abundance and Tintinnids dominated the biomass. We investigated the effects of different land use types and environmental parameters on the number and abundance of native and introduced land snail species in East Java. 2919 specimens were sampled and assigned to 55 species of which 8 are introduced. Whereas species richness was highest in primary forest, the highest number of introduced species was found in agroforest. The snail assemblages in different habitat types differ much clearer in composition than in total species richness. Plantations and agroforest are dominated by introduced pulmonates with regard to number of individuals, while primary forest is dominated by native prosobranchs. The habitat requirements of the introduced pulmonates differ from those of the native species. In the study area, the abundance of native as well as introduced pulmonate species increased with increasing human impact. However, the abundance of introduced pulmonate species decreased with increasing density of the canopy cover, whereas the abundance of native pulmonate species increased with increasing canopy cover. The abundance of native prosobranch land snails also tends to increase with increasing canopy cover and with the availability of deadwood, but decreased with increasing human impact. Improving the canopy cover and retaining deadwood in plantations and agroforests might help to control the populations of introduced species or even prevent their establishment in these habitats. Land snails are good indicators for the long-term stability of natural habitats, because several species are restricted to undisturbed natural habitats and because of their low dispersal abilities. However, complete inventories of land snail species are costly. Therefore we propose two indices that can be scored with much less effort, namely the percentage of prosobranch individuals and the percentage of individuals of introduced species. Both indices are significantly correlated with the number of native species. Dense plantations and agroforests bordering primary forests may protect the latter from introduced species and help to conserve the native fauna by reducing desiccation and buffering the human impact on the primary forests.  相似文献

Within many animal taxa there is a trend for the species of larger body size to eat food of lower caloric value. For example, most large extant lizards are herbivorous. Reasonable arguments based on energetic considerations are often invoked to explain this trend, yet, while these factors set limits to feasible body size, they do not in themselves mathematically produce optimum body sizes. A simple optimization model is developed here which considers food search, capture, and eating rates and the metabolic cost of these activities for animals of different sizes. The optimization criterion is defined as the net caloric gain a consumer accrues per day. This model does produce an optimum intermediate body size which increases with food quality - not the reverse. This discrepancy is accounted for, however, because the model also predicts that body size should be even more sensitive to increases in food abundance. In nature, many poor quality foods are also relatively abundant foods, hence the consumers eating them may maximize their daily energetic profit by evolving a relatively large body size. Optimum consumer body size also decreases with increases in consumer metabolic rate and prey speed.  相似文献

The Brazilian Atlantic Forest suffered a severe geographic contraction along the last five centuries that reduced drastically most vascular epiphyte populations. Among the range of man-made matrixes, tree monocultures have the potential to contribute positively to the maintenance of the regional epiphyte diversity. Here, we test the similarity in abundance, richness, and species composition between vascular epiphytic communities established in managed monocultures of exotic and native species with natural communities occurring in neighboring native Araucaria Forest patches. In the São Francisco de Paula National Forest (Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil), we recorded 62 epiphyte species from 300 phorophytes occurring in 12, one-hectare plots of Araucaria Forest and managed plantations of Pinus, Eucalyptus and Araucaria. Species richness, rarefied richness and abundance were significantly higher in Araucaria Forest in comparison to the exotic stands. Species composition was also substantially differentiated as Araucaria Forest patches harbored a greater number of zoochorous species than those of the exotic stands. Additionally, plantations of Araucaria angustifolia, a native species, sustained more individuals and more species than the exotic plantations. Neither tree height nor DBH explained epiphyte richness; however, both phorophyte diversity and stand age together accounted for 92% of the among-site variation in epiphytic species richness. We conclude that substrate heterogeneity in combination with time available for colonization contribute significantly to beta-diversity of epiphytes in Araucaria forests. However, demographic experimental studies are necessary in order to disentangle the role of substrate quality from metapopulation processes, such as dispersal limitation, at both temporal and spatial scales.  相似文献

Southern Patagonia’s landscape hosts several semi-natural habitats, traditionally used for sheep production, such as Mulguraea tridens and Lepidophyllum cupressiforme scrublands. Mulguraea scrublands are managed via mechanical shredding to remove shrubs and increase grass availability, alternating with structural-retention strips. We analyzed the influence of structural-retention management (with cut and retention strips) in Mulguraea scrublands with regards to above-ground arthropod community structure, as well as differences between the two natural scrubland types. We worked in Santa Cruz Province (Argentina) with pitfall traps during two summers in the first 2 years after mechanical shredding. Richness, abundance, occurrence frequency, Shannon–Wiener diversity and Pielou evenness indices, and similarity among assemblages were evaluated using univariate and multivariate statistical tests. Complementarily, we described vegetation ground cover and microclimate. We collected 3279 individuals from 38 species belonging to Insecta and Arachnida Classes. Shannon–Wiener diversity and Pielou evenness indices, as well as the overall assemblages, differed significantly between managed cut strips and natural Mulguraea scrublands, mainly due to the loss and introduction of species from surrounding environments; abundance also differed in the first sampling year compared to the second year. Likewise, managed retention strips allowed the partial maintenance of arthropod community structure and had a microclimate that was similar to natural Mulguraea scrublands, although assemblages in managed cut and retention strips became more similar among themselves in the second sampling year. On the other hand, richness, abundance and assemblage of both natural scrubland types differed significantly, with 87?% more indicator species in Mulguraea than in Lepidophyllum scrublands. Greater dissimilarity occurred between both natural scrubland types in dryer years, which could be related with an El Niño Southern Oscillation event. If arthropod community structure changes prove stable over time, mechanical shredding with structural-retention management would allow for an increase in the sheep carrying capacity, while reducing impacts to the arthropod community, thus providing a viable compromise between productivity and conservation in a fragile arid environment. More studies are necessary to evaluate long term changes in above-ground arthropod community structure of scrublands in arid zones of southern Patagonia.  相似文献

Species diversity, population structure, abundance and dispersion patterns of all woody plants 10cm gbh were inventoried in two 1-ha plots of tropical dry evergreen (sacred grove or temple) forests at Kuzhanthaikuppam (KK) and Thirumanikkuzhi (TM) on the Coromandel coast of south India. Site KK is a stunted forest (average tree height ca 6 m) and TM a tall forest (average tree height ca 10 m). A total of 54 species (in 47 genera and 31 families) were recorded. Species richness and stand density were 42 and 38 species and 1367 and 974 individuals ha–1 respectively for the sites KK and TM. About 50% of the total species were common to both the sites. Site TM is twofold more voluminous (basal area 29.48 m2 ha–1) than KK (basal area 15.44 m2 ha–1). Nearly one third of the individuals are multi-stemmed in the low-statured site KK whereas one fourth of the tree density is multi-stemmed in TM. Species abundance pattern varied between the two sites. The abundance of three species in KK and two species in TM is pronounced. Memecylon umbellatum, the most abundant species contributing to one third of total stand density in KK, is least represented in TM. Species richness, density and diversity indices decreased with increasing girth threshold. Most species exhibited clumped dispersion of individuals both at 0.25 and 1-ha scales. Population structure for girth frequency is an expanding one for both the sites, except for basal area distribution in KK. Variations in plant diversity and abundance are related to site attributes and human impacts. In the light of habitat uniqueness, species richness and sacred grove status, the need for conservation is emphasized.  相似文献

Sepia (eyed) D. melanogaster females were allowed to enter bottle populations of wildtype D. melanogaster flies at rare, sporadic intervals. The frequency of sepia-eyed individuals in these populations was determined much more by selective forces than by numbers of immigrant individuals. Populations with no sepia individuals averaged nearly 3 immigrant individuals; those with more than 25% (homozygous) sepia flies averaged about 6 immigrants. After 34 generations, the average frequency of the sepia gene is about 0.28; this may represent the average frequency of any allele introduced into the wildtype populations by these migrant flies.  相似文献

The abundance, species diversity, and spatial distribution of small mammals were studied in two localities in southern Vietnam: the Cat Tien National Park and the Binh Chau Nature Reserve. Rodents were trapped on the ground and in the tropical forest canopy (2–12 m above the ground), marked, and released on the spot. Species diversity of small mammals in undisturbed tropical forest (9 species) was higher than in disturbed tropical forest (14 species). The rat Maxomys surifer and the squirrel Callosciurus flavimanus were dominant. In undisturbed forest, the frequencies of rodent occurrence on the ground and in the canopy were of the same order; in disturbed forest, rodents occurred in the canopy an order of magnitude less frequently than on the ground.  相似文献

We analyzed the relationship between population abundance and variability of western scrub-jays Aphelocoma californica based on 48 yr of Audubon Christmas Bird Counts and the resources on which they depend as indexed by the diversity and abundance of mast-producing oaks and pines and, for California, estimates of acorn production based on a statewide survey. In general, populations of A. c. californica along the Pacific coast were related to oaks, with populations being more abundant and more stable in areas with more oak species and greater oak abundance. In contrast, populations of A. c. woodhouseii in the Great Basin were correlated with pines/conifers, again with higher abundance and greater stability with increased number of pine species and greater abundance of pines/conifers. The presumed driver of these patterns is increased resource abundance with greater habitat abundance and increased resource stability with increasing species diversity due to asynchrony in seed production among different species of trees. Asynchrony in acorn production is particularly high among oaks that require different number of years to produce acorns, but we failed to confirm that populations with access to both types were more stable than those with access to only one type after controlling for oak diversity. However, we did find a strong positive correlation between overall mean scrub-jay abundance in California and overall acorn production one year earlier, suggesting that acorns benefit scrub-jay populations primarily by increasing reproductive success the following year. These patterns demonstrate the strong dependence between population dynamics and resource stability as well as how different these relationships can be within closely related taxa.  相似文献

The existence of additive genetic variance in developmental stability has important implications for our understanding of morphological variation. The heritability of individual fluctuating asymmetry and other measures of developmental stability have frequently been estimated from parent-offspring regressions, sib analyses, or from selection experiments. Here we review by meta-analysis published estimates of the heritability of developmental stability, mainly the degree of individual fluctuating asymmetry in morphological characters. The overall mean effect size of heritabilities of individual fluctuating asymmetry was 0.19 from 34 studies of 17 species differing highly significantly from zero (P < 0.0001). The mean heritability for 14 species was 0.27. This indicates that there is a significant additive genetic component to developmental stability. Effect size was larger for selection experiments than for studies based on parent-offspring regression or sib analyses, implying that genetic estimates were unbiased by maternal or common environment effects. Additive genetic coefficients of variation for individual fluctuating asymmetry were considerably higher than those for character size per se. Developmental stability may be significantly heritable either because of strong directional selection, or fluctuating selection regimes which prevent populations from achieving a high degree of developmental stability to current environmental and genetic conditions.  相似文献

Using fluctuating bilateral asymmetry as a measure of developmental stability, we tested the hypothesis that genomic coadaptation mediates developmental stability in natural populations. Hybrid populations were more asymmetrical than populations of the parental species, and ranks of overall developmental instability were positively correlated with ranks of mean heterozygosity in these populations. The failure to find increased asymmetry in previous studies of natural hybrid populations (Jackson, 1973a, 1973b; Felley, 1980) suggests that such populations may have re-evolved coadapted genomes. Increased asymmetry in hybrid Enneacanthus populations may reflect the youthfulness of these populations.  相似文献

Many systems are prone to both exotic plant invasion and frequent natural disturbances. Native species richness can buffer the effects of invasion or disturbance when imposed in isolation, but it is largely unknown whether richness provides substantial resistance against invader impact in the face of disturbance. We experimentally examined how disturbance (drought/burning) influenced the impact of three exotic invaders (Centaurea stoebe, Linaria dalmatica, or Potentilla recta) on native abundance across a gradient of species richness, using previously constructed grassland assemblages. We found that invaders had higher cover in experimentally disturbed plots than in undisturbed plots across all levels of native species richness. Although exotic species varied in cover, all three invaders had significant impacts on native cover in disturbed plots. Regardless of disturbance, however, invader cover diminished with increasing richness. Invader impacts on native cover also diminished at higher richness levels, but only in undisturbed plots. In disturbed plots, invaders strongly impacted native cover across all richness levels, as disturbance favoured invaders over native species. By examining these ecological processes concurrently, we found that disturbance exacerbated invader impacts on native abundance. Although diversity provided a buffering effect against invader impact without disturbance, the combination of invasion and disturbance markedly depressed native abundance, even in high richness assemblages.  相似文献

The population dynamics of soil-dwelling springtails in a spruce forest (Piceetum oxalidosum) and a dry meadow with young planted spruce trees was analyzed based on an eight-year sampling in Moscow Region. Fluctuations of population densities of the most species are less than 10 fold. The seasonal dynamics (the number and position of peaks) is more constant in surface-dwelling species than in hemi-and euedaphic ones. The occurrence of the density peaks in specific seasons is merely a tendency. Two types of the size structure of populations are revealed: the “left-sided” type with prevalence of small immature individuals and the “symmetrical” one with prevalence of medium-sized individuals. Synchronization of reproduction in the species studied is possible only under the effect of external climatic factors. The seasonal density dynamics of most abundant species is related to the temperature and, to a lesser extent, precipitation. The mean density of some species in the following year can be predicted based on the mean temperature and/or sum of precipitation in the current year. In the forest, the density-dependent regulation of springtail abundance is probable. The springtail populations do not respond to overgrowing of the meadow with spruce trees at least at the beginning of this process.  相似文献

In this communication results of an ecological study of soil Oribatida from Northern Tripura, India have been incorporated. Soil samples were collected fortnightly from two sites over a period of one year (July 2016 to June 2017). An attempt has been made to determine the extent to which macro vegetation, edaphic variables and local microclimatic conditions influence the community structure of Oribatida. Among the 14 species under 12 genera identified, species of the genera Scheloribates, Protoribates and Galumna were the major contributors representing 34.27%, 16.93% and 7.58% of the total population, respectively. Species of Scheloribates and Protoribates were common and dominated in both sites. The oribatid abundance exhibited an irregular and significant trend of fluctuation with a maximum in winter and a minimum in the monsoon period. Out of four edaphic variables analyzed, only the organic matter content and pH showed a positive and significant correlation with oribatid abundance, while temperature and moisture revealed a significant negative correlation. It was interesting to note that although the study sites were close to each other and were more or less similar in topological, edaphological and climatological conditions, with a little variation in distance and vegetation cover they exhibited variations in both oribatid species abundance and diversity. The reason behind the seasonal variation and differences in abundance and species diversity in the studied sites was highlighted. Further extensive and comprehensive research on oribatids is needed in the region of Tripura.  相似文献

Background

Dioecy represents a source of variation in plant quality to herbivores due to sexual differences in intensity and timing of resource allocation to growth, defense and reproduction. Male plants have higher growth rates and should be more susceptible to herbivores than females, due to a lower investment in defense and reproduction.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We compared resource investment to growth and reproduction and its consequences to herbivore attack on three Baccharis species along one year (B. dracunculifolia, B. ramosissima, and B. concinna). Phenological patterns presented by the three species of Baccharis were quite different over time, but the number of fourth-level shoots and plant growth rate did not differ between sexes in any studied species. Intersexual difference in reproductive investment was only observed for B. concinna, with female individuals supporting higher inflorescence density than male individuals throughout the year. Gall abundance on the three Baccharis species was not influenced by plant sex. However, all plant traits evaluated here positively influenced the gall abundance on B. concinna, whereas only the number of fourth-level shoots positively influenced gall abundance on B. ramosissima and B. dracunculifolia.

Conclusions/Significance

The absence of differential reproductive allocation may have contributed to similar growth and shoot production between the sexes, with bottom-up effects resulting in gender similarities in gall abundance patterns. The number of fourth-level shoots, an indicator of meristem availability to herbivores, was the most important driver of the abundance of the galling insects regardless of host plant gender or species. Albeit the absence of intersexual variation in insect gall abundance is uncommon in the literature, the detailed study of the exceptions may bring more light to understand the mechanisms and processes behind such trend.  相似文献
