Paravelia anta sp. n. and P. hungerfordi (Drake and Harris) from South America (Heteroptera: Veliidae)

Paravelia anta sp.n. from Argentina and Paraguay is described and compared with its close relative P. hungerfordi (Drake & Harris) from Brasil, which is redescribed. In addition, characteristics to separate these two from the remaining species of Paravelia are given.     

Gill monogenea of Rastrelliger spp. (Scombridae)

The following gill monogeneans are described, based on a survey of 240 Rastrelliger kanagurta, 12 R. faughni and 185 R. brachysoma (Scombridae) from many geographical areas: Eyelavera typica from R. kanagurta, R. faughni and R. brachysoma, Indomazocraes jagannath from R. kanagurta and R. faughni, Kuhnia sprostonae from R. kanagurta and R. brachysoma, and Kuhnia scombercolias from R. kanagurta and R. brachysoma. Eyelavera parukhini Lebedev, 1980 is synonymised with E. typica, Scomberocotyle eyela Unnithan, 1964 with Indomazocraes jagannath, Kuhnia microlepidotusi Gupta & Krishna, 1977 and K. kanagurta Mamaev & Parukhin, 1986 with K. sprostonae, K. arabica Mamaev & Parukhin, 1986 with K. scombercolias Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983. It is emphasized that populations of Monogenea from the same host species or genus in different geographical areas are likely to be conspecific, and should not be described as different species, if they differ only slightly from each other. Monogenea that differ from insufficiently described species in minor detail should not be described as new species unless material of the original species has been examined.     

Pogostemon nudus sp. nov. (Lamiaceae) from Thailand

A new species of Pogostemon Desf., P. nudus Bongcheewin & Pramali, is described, illustrated and compared with the similar P. menthoides from Thailand. Morphological characters, especially the micromorphology of nutlets and leaf epidermis, and conservation status in accordance with the IUCN red list categories and criteria are described and discussed. In addition, a key to all species of P. sect. Pogostemon known from Thailand is presented.     

Potentilla jiaozishanensis sp. nov. (sect. Leptostylae,Rosaceae) from southwest China

Potentilla jiaozishanensis, a distinct new species of Rosaceae from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, it is closely related to P. stenophylla var. stenophylla but clearly differs from the latter by its bidentate leaflets, lanceolate epicalyx‐segments that are longer than the sepals, villose ovaries and achenes. Moreover, the pollen grains of P. jiaozishanensis are markedly different from those of P. stenophylla var. stenophylla in size and shape. The newly described species is endemic to the Jiaozishan Mountains, southwest China.     

Campylocentrum guarinae sp. nov. (Vandeae,Orchidaceae) from Colombia

A new species of Campylocentrum from the Colombian Andes, C. guarinae, is described, illustrated and placed within a key to Colombian species of the genus. The new species resembles C. lansbergii from which it differs in vegetative and floral characters. The main differences between these species are described and illustrated.     

Scrophularia attariae and S. maharluica spp. nov. (Scrophulariaceae) from south Iran

Two new species of Scrophularia L. sect. Tomiophyllum Benth., S. attariae Ranjbar & Rahchamani and S. maharluica Ranjbar & Rahchamani, are described and illustrated from Fars Province, south Iran. The diagnostic morphological characters of these species and closely related taxa are discussed. The distribution, ecology and conservation status of the new species are also described. The value and utility of stem indumentum and leaf stomata is evaluated as an additional source of information for their taxonomy. Finally, an identification key and distribution map for the new taxa and related species are presented.     

Moina oryzae n. sp. (Cladocera,Moinidae) from Tamil Nadu (South India)

Moina oryzae n. sp., from a rice field in South India, is described. The species is related toMoina reticulata Daday, 1905, and toMoina minuta Hansen, 1899. The parthenogenetic and sexual females and male are described. A differential diagnosis is given.     

Carnoya kermarreci n.sp. (Rhigonematidae: Nematoda) from Anadenobolus politus (Porat) (Rhinocricidae: Diplopoda) from Guadeloupe

Summary Carnoya kermarreci n.sp. (Rhigonematidae; Nematoda) is described from Anadenobolus politus (Porat) (Rhinocricidae; Diplopoda) from Guadeloupe. The new species most closely resembles C. martiniquensis Adamson, 1984 from A. politus in Martinique and C. venezuelensis Adamson, 1984 from Rhinocricus flavocinctus from Venezuela in that the lips in the male are broad and the arrangement of caudal papillae is almost identical in the three species. Males of C. kermarreci are easily distinguished by the absence of spines, by the form of the cuticular projections at the base of the buccal cavity and by the fact that the most anterior pair of caudal papillae are located very close together. Females are distinguished by the presence of three pairs of somatic papillae near the level of the vulva. The nematode fauna of A. politus includes species from two distinct orders and presumably reflects the fact that diplopods are among the most ancient hosts of nematodes.     

Lysimachia vietnamensis and L. verbascifolia spp. nov. (Primulaceae) from Vietnam

Two new species of Lysimachia (Primulaceae), L. vietnamensis L. K. Phan & C. M. Hu and L. verbascifolia C. M. Hu & K. L. Phan from Vietnam are described and illustrated.     

Cricotopus (Cricotopus) nevadensis sp. n. (Diptera,Chironomidae) from Sierra Nevada (southern Spain)

Male and female imagines, and pupal exuviae of Cricotopus (C.) nevadensis sp. n. are described. A discussion on the systematic position, a differential diagnosis and notes on the ecology of this new species are given.     

1061. Lunaria annua subsp. pachyrrhiza (Borb as) Maire & Petitm.,: Cruciferae (Brassicaceae)

Lunaria annua is overviewed and its two subspecies, subsp. annua and subsp. pachyrrhiza, discussed, the latter described. Two cultivars of subsp. pachyrrhiza, ‘Corfu Blue’ and ‘Mistras’ are illustrated and described. Details of cultivation are also included.     

Capparis dongvanensis sp. nov. (Capparaceae) from Vietnam

Capparis dongvanensis (Capparaceae) is described as a new species and illustrated from Ha Giang Province of Vietnam. It is morphologically similar to C. lanceolaris and C. fengii, but differs in the number of flowers on peduncles, length of spine and petiole, apex of the leaf, type of inflorescence, petal color, cylindrical ovary without any beak, fruit shape and number of seeds per fruit. Diagnostic morphological characters along with pollen and seed SEM images of C. dongvanensis and allied species are provided. Its ecology, habitat and conservation status are also described.     

Lectotypification of Buxbaumia aphylla Hedw. and B. aphylla var. viridis DC. (Buxbaumiaceae)

Abstract

The two species of Buxbaumia Hedw. known to occur in Europe were both originally discovered on this continent and were the earliest in the genus (as presently delimited) to be described. Already widely known, Buxbaumia aphylla Hedw., was validated by Johannes Hedwig in 1801, whereas B. viridis (DC.) Moug. & Nestl. was initially described as a variety of B. aphylla by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in 1815. After two centuries in the bryological literature, these taxa are herein effectively typified. Lectotypes for the names B. aphylla and B. viridis are designated based on original herbarium sheets from the Hedwig-Schwägrichen and De Candolle collections in G.     

Spiradiclis coriaceifolia and S. tonglingensis spp. nov. (Rubiaceae,Ophiorrhizeae) from Guangxi,China

Two new species, Spiradiclis coriaceifolia R.‐J. Wang and S. tonglingensis R.‐J. Wang, from China, are described and illustrated. Their palynological characters are described based on SEM observations.     

Ardisia banaensis and A. sadirioides spp. nov. (Myrsinaceae) from Vietnam

Two new species of Ardisia (Myrsinaceae), A. banaensis C. M. Hu & L. K. Phan and A. sadirioides C. M. Hu & L. K. Phan, from Vietnam are described and illustrated. Their distribution, habitat, phenology and closely related species are discussed.     

Blackmania gen. nov. and the related genus Acaudella (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Aphidinae)

The aphid genus Blackmania gen. nov. is described. In the genus, B. eastopi sp. nov. associated with Polygonum equisetiforme (Polygonaceae) from Israel and Cyprus is described and illustrated. Morphologically, the new genus is similar to the genus Acaudella in respect to the lack of a cauda. Acaudella puchovi, associated with Atraphaxis caucasica (=A. buxifolia) and A. spinosa (Polygonaceae) from Uzbekistan and Israel, is re‐described and the apterous viviparous female is figured for the first time. The lectotype and paralectotypes of A. puchovi are also designated. An identification key to known species of the tribe Macrosiphini without cauda is provided. The morphological separation of B. eastopi gen. nov., sp. nov. from A. puchovi is visualized using principal component analysis.     

Haemoproteus gabaldoni n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Haemoproteidae) from the Muscovy duck Cairina moschata (Aves: Anatidae)

Haemoproteus gabaldoni n. sp. is described from the Muscovy duck Cairina moschata from Caracas, Venezuela and is compared to H. greineri and H. nettionis which have been described previously from the Anatidae. The highly amoeboid outline, volutin granules and small number of pigment granules of H. gabaldoni serve to readily separate this species from the other two.     

Vangueriopsis shimbaensis sp. nov. (Rubiaceae) from Kenya

A new species of Vangueriopsis from Kenya, V. shimbaensis, is described and illustrated. Notes on distribution, phenology and conservation are provided.
