Suspended matter in the Scheldt estuary   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Scheldt estuary is characterised by a specific energy pattern resulting from the interaction of wave energy, tidal energy and river energy. It divides the estuary into three parts and governs suspended matter transport and distribution pattern. Observation of suspended matter transport shows the existence of three estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM), a marine-dominated ETM in the lower estuary at the river mouth, a river-dominated ETM in the upper estuary with suspended matter concentration reaching up to 300 mg/l, and the most important tide-dominated ETM in the middle estuary with suspended matter concentrations from several hundred milligrams per litre up to a few grams per litre. Resuspension is the dominant phenomenon in this last ETM due to the tidal related bottom scour, which is initiated when a critical erosion velocity of 0.56 m/s is exceeded. An assessment of residual current along the axis of the estuary shows distinctive pattern between the surface water flow and the near bottom water flow. Also the local morphology of the river, natural or man-made, has a prominent effect on the orientation and strength of the residual currents flowing along either side of the river or river bend. Evaluation of suspended matter concentration in relation to the current flow shows no systematic correlation either because of phenomena as scour lag and settling lag mainly in the middle estuary, or because of the current independency character of uniform-suspension mainly in the upper and lower estuary. Quantification of suspended matter load exhibits a net downstream transport from the upper estuary, a near-equilibrium sustainable status in the middle estuary and a net upstream transport of suspended matter from the lower estuary. The characteristic of suspended matter is induced by and is a function of e.g. tidal phase, spring-neap tide, longitudinal and vertical distribution mechanisms, seasons, short and long terms of anthropogenic influence and/or estuarine maintenance. Suspended matter is dominated by complex and cohesive organo-mineral aggregates. It consists of a variable amount of an inorganic fraction (average of 89%) and an organic fraction and occurs largely as flocs, the size of which is remarkably larger in the upper estuary and smallest within the ETM in the middle estuary. Independent time series measurements (1990–2000) of suspended matter property show an increasing sand fraction, a decreasing organic matter content, a rise in 13C as well as a decrease in water transparency. These independent measurements exhibit coherent consequences of estuarine maintenance operations. Maintenance dredging of the shipping channel and harbours and dumping operation in the Scheldt strengthen marine influence further landward, resulting in a sustained tidal range increment and upstream flow and transport of suspended matter.  相似文献

In 1989, three years after the disaster at Chernobyl, the Cesium (Cs-137 and Cs-134) activity of water, sediments, suspended solids, algae, and crustaceans were studied in five sections of the Weser estuary covering the nontidal and tidal freshwater region down to the brackish area. The total water activities in the freshwater regions are similar, but there are differences in the Cs distribution between the dissolved and the particulate phase depending on the concentration of suspended solids and abiotic water parameters. The Cs activity derived from Chernobyl is only detectable in sediments and suspended solids. Specific differences in Cs accumulation were found for crustaceans but not for algae.  相似文献

Material transported by the Öre River in northern Sweden is all deposited within the estuary which means that resuspension is necessary for the transport of particles out of the estuary. Wave-induced sediment resuspension in the estuary was studied by monitoring the distribution of suspended particles during a resuspension-redeposition cycle. The particle concentration in the water mass was measured with a light scattering probe, calibrated by comparison with the amount of particles collected on a filter.After a long period with calm weather and a low river input less than 100 tonne of suspended particulate matter was present in the estuary. However, during a period with stormy conditions significant resuspension of sediment particles occurred within the estuary. Two days after the storm approximately 1125 tonne of suspended particulate matter was found in the estuary. Most (61%) of the suspended matter was found in the deepest third of the water column, although up to 17% was present in the top third of the water column. The total load of particulate matter in the water column remained constant until day four after the storm, but a significant redistribution of the particulate matter occurred both in the vertical and horizontal directions. Nine days after the storm, a significant amount of particles (c. 350 tonnes) was still in suspension.  相似文献

The distribution and quantitation of enteroviruses among water, suspended solids, and compact sediments in a polluted estuary are described. Samples were collected sequentially from water, suspended solids, fluffy sediments (uppermost layer of bottom sediments), and compact sediment. A total of 103 samples were examined of which 27 (26%) were positive for virus. Polioviruses were recovered most often, followed by coxsackie B viruses and echoviruses 7 and 29. Virus was found most often attached to suspended solids: 72% of these samples were positive, whereas only 14% of water samples without solids yielded virus. Fluffy sediments yielded virus in 47% of the samples, whereas only 5% of compact bottom-sediment samples were positive. When associated with solids, poliovirus and rotavirus retained their infectious quality for 19 days. The same viruses remained infectious for only 9 days when freely suspended in seawater. Collection of suspended solids at ambient water pH appears to be very useful for the detection of virus; it has advantages over collecting and processing large volumes of water, with accompanying pH adjustment and salt addition for processing.  相似文献

The flocculation mechanism dominates the fate of suspended matter in the estuarine environment. By modifying the texture of suspended matter, flocculation is one of the principle factors determining the transport and deposition of suspended matter in estuaries. Surveys of the seasonal variation of dispersed particle and non-dispersed particle characteristics, organic matter content as well as suspended matter deposition in two contrasting intertidal environments, one freshwater and one brackish water, in the Scheldt estuary were undertaken at fortnightly intervals for a year. The study of non-dispersed particle, i.e. floc, is mainly focused on floc size, shape, and microstructure, properties presumed to be significant in the suspended matter transport processes in the estuary. In this study, floc size as well as floc sphericity correlate positively with the change of organic matter content and reveal that floc grows in a three-dimensional way with increasing organic matter. It is observed that relatively condensed, small and elongated flocs appear in winter and spring periods, while loose, large and spherical flocs occur during the summer. The study also reveals that suspended matter transported as dense flocs with size range of ca. 105–250 m have a greater effect on its short-term deposition than loose flocs with size range of ca. 250–500 m. As the measured suspended matter deposition is much higher in winter–spring than in summer, it is deduced here that highly compact and relatively dense flocs contribute to deposition during winter and spring periods resulting in a stable layer, while loosely formed flocs likely lead to an easier erodible layer during the summer. This study concludes that floc structure-related density is a more significant parameter than floc size in the suspended matter deposition processes.  相似文献

Summary During a neap-spring-neap tidal cycle in the Humber estuary concentrations of suspended solids and oxygen depletion were greatest at spring tides. Most bacteria were attached to particles and attached bacteria (counted using epifluorescence microscopy) increased as solids increased. Concentrations of free bacteria however were unrelated to suspended solids. Heterotrophic activities of bacteria per unit volume of water (measured using 14C glucose uptake and Michaelis-Menton kinetics) varied irregularly and were not related to bacterial crops, suspended solids or oxygen depletion. Activity per bacterium however decreased as suspended solids increased.  相似文献

In lake Marken (Markermeer), a shallow lake in the Netherlands, sediment transport and suspended solids concentration are dominated by wind induced resuspension of sediment. The suspended solids concentration in the lake determines the attenuation of light. A 2-dimensional sediment transport model, STRESS-2d, was used to estimate the special distribution of the silt content for periods with different wind conditions. The model was calibrated using measured values of the fall velocity distributions of sediment, freshly deposited material and suspended solids. The specific light attenuation coefficient of the various sediment classes was also measured and used in the light attenuation model, CLEAR, together with simulation results from the STRESS-2d model, to simulate the light attenuation variations in time and space. By comparison of the simulation results for different scenarios, the influence of regional planning features on the sediment balance and the light attenuation can quantified. Concentrations and glucose mineralization potentials ( V max) of attached and free bacteria in waters from the Humber estuary were determined. The waters had high concentrations of suspended solids. Most bacteria were attached to suspended solids and V max of attached bacteria was greater than that of free bacteria. These observations suggest that breakdown of organic matter is carried out mainly by attached bacteria. Examination of samples from other estuaries which contained less suspended solids than the Humber suggested that in these estuaries free bacteria might be more abundant than attached bacteria.  相似文献

In Lake Volkerak, situated in the southwest of the Netherlands, downward settling fluxes are related to external inputs of suspended solids and wind action. The settling fluxes, measured using sediment traps, were 55 g (dw) m –2 d –1 on average. The ratio of metal concentration to scandium concentration was used to discriminate between external (polluted) suspended solids and internal (relatively clean) suspended solids. Generally, the contribution of the river suspended solids was small compared to that of resuspended material; the river-transported material was mainly deposited in the centre and to the east of the lake. The amount of material trapped increased substantially with increasing wind velocity.A simple model was used to interpretate the data. This model does not have a predictive capacity, but can be used to interpret and assess the significance of material retained in the sediment traps. Erosion was related to the wind velocity, using an empirical relationship between the orbital velocity of the wind-generated waves at the bottom and the wind velocity. The critical wind velocity for erosion to occur was estimated to be 5.5 m s–1. The extremely high amounts retained in the sediment traps in shallow areas during storms emphasised the importance of these wind conditions for the transport of fine sediments.  相似文献

通过对香溪河悬浮颗粒物粒度及浓度的实验分析,研究梯级水电站开发对河流悬浮颗粒物的影响,结果表明:(1)香溪河干流悬浮颗粒物粒径由上游到中游逐渐减小,并且在无水电站干扰时颗粒物粒径减小幅度较大;(2)从进水口至出水口河段,水电站悬浮颗粒物粒径总体变化不显著;(3)水电站从进水口河段至出水口河段,总悬浮颗粒物浓度(CTPM)在某些位置有所增加,有机颗粒物浓度(CPOM)无明显变化.悬浮颗粒物粒度及浓度的变化与水流流速及流量有着相当大关系.  相似文献

The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献

Sedimentation of river transported particles in the Öre Estuary was studied during spring flow (April–May, 1989). River input was calculated as the product of discharge and particle concentration in the river water. The concentration of suspended matter in the estuary water was determined with a light-scattering probe at 25 depth profiles throughout the estuary. The sedimentation was measured using sediment traps on 5 stations along a line from the river mouth to the mouth of the estuary. Sampling was carried out on four dates with different water discharge.The extension of the particle plume varied during the observation period mainly due to variation in river discharge. The maximum extension of the river plume occurred during the peak of the spring flow and covered approximately 70% of the estuary area. The sedimentation rates were generally high and the average retention time for a particle in the water column was less than 1 day which verifies that the river transported fine-grained particles are primary deposited within the estuary. The major part of the river input of suspended matter was deposited near the river mouth. There was a surplus of the total sedimentation compared to the river input which was due to wave-induced resuspension, especially in the eastern part of the estuary.  相似文献

To understand the nature of sediment-associated nutrient and contaminant transport dynamics in fluvial systems, a stormflow sampling program of suspended solids is reported for one water year in a representative rural diffuse source catchment of southeastern Ontario. Bulk samples of subsieve suspended solids were obtained using field-portable continuous-flow centrifuge apparatus. The physical and geochemical properties of suspended solids show no significant intersite differences over reaches of 1 500–2 000 m, yet display distinctive seasonal trends. Systematic seasonal changes in particle size, organic content, and Ca, P, Mn, Al, Ti, Fe, and K appear to reflect the changing role of partial area hydrology. Ca, P, and Mn are bioaccumulated by stream algae. Mineral signature is relatively constant over the year. This article first appeared in the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences. This work investigates the impact of structural parameters on the rheological behaviour of apple purees. Reconstructed apple purees from 0 g/100 g up to 2.32 g/100 g of insoluble solids content and varying in particle size were prepared. Three different particle size distributions were obtained by mechanical treatment only, to modify both size and morphology of the particles without modifying the intrinsic rigidity of the cell walls. Rheological measurements showed that the insoluble solids content have a first order effect on the rheological behaviour of the suspensions: three concentrations domains were observed in both dynamic and flow measurements. A model is proposed for each domain. The existence of a weak network between particles is clearly shown over a critical concentration of insoluble solids (cell walls) depending on particle size distribution (semi-diluted domain). In a concentrated domain, particles are on close packing conditions and their apparent volume begin to shrink. Particle size and shape also play an important role on the rheological behaviour of reconstructed apple puree. Due to their irregular shape, cell clusters clog the medium at lower concentration compared to individual cells.  相似文献

The mouth of the Seine River estuary (France) has undergone marked morphological evolution over several decades mainly due to engineering works aimed at improving access to Rouen and Le Havre harbours. The intertidal areas are decreasing in size and the lower estuary is accumulating sediment and prograding. In order to understand and better describe the major morphological behaviours of the estuary, a morphodynamic numerical model was developed within the Seine-Aval program. At the end of the 1st part of the research program, a validated fine sediment transport model (3D) was available (Le Hir et al., 2001b). As the present morphological study addresses medium-term issues (a few decades), and because of the need to investigate impacts of local structures or events, we chose to use the so-called “process-based approach” starting from the existing model. First, the existing model was upgraded to account for (suspended) sand transport, and to achieve coupling between morphological changes and sediment transport. Erodability of the sediment accounts for the respective proportions of mud and sand. Simulations starting from an arbitrary surficial sediment cover show that the model is able to reproduce realistic sediment patterns. For example, it is able to change the sediment nature on the intertidal flat near Le Havre from sand to mud. Observed structures of suspended sediment are also reproduced: fine particles mainly follow the turbidity maximum whereas significant concentrations of sand grains in suspension are found where the hydrodynamic stresses are intense. Concerning morphodynamics, simulations with real forcing over one year are discussed. The effect of waves on the bathymetric evolution of the mouth is shown and the sensitivity of morphodynamics to the coupling procedure is tested.  相似文献

The Rosetta estuary was partially separated from the Rosetta branch of the Nile by Edfina Barrage, which controls the Nile discharge into the Mediterranean Sea. The study area covers the Rosetta estuary (lotic environment) and the adjoining seawaters (lentic environment) to investigate the local and seasonal distribution of dissolved and particulate copper and zinc, as well as dissolved cadmium in this estuary and to illustrate its influence on the distribution of these metal forms in the inshore seawaters. Besides, emphasis on the removal of dissolved heavy metals from waters by their adsorption onto suspended matter (SM) was also considered. Contrary to particulate copper (PCu), the vertical values of dissolved copper (DCu) decreased generally with depth. Planktonic scavenging and regeneration processes might determine the vertical profiles of the copper forms. The copper data suggest that the surface sources of DCu exceeded the bottom sources, contrary to the sources of PCu. The markedly high and maximum seasonal averages of DCu in the estuary and inshore seawater in July inspite of the high uptake in summer possibly reflect higher amounts of humic materials. The lowest seasonal average value of DCu in the inshore seawater in January suggests removal of copper in presence of maximum value of SM during highest discharge. The highest regional average of DCu at the estuarine mouth coincided with desorption process during mixing of the fresh and salt waters. The vertical values of dissolved zinc (DZn) and particulate zinc (PZn) showed irregular variations and their high concentrations in the surface of the estuarine and inshore seawater indicate possible land-based sources. The high bottom DZn values, however, resulted from its contribution from the interstitial water of the sediments. The data suggest that the surface sources of DZn exceeded the bottom sources and PZn showed the opposite trend in the open sea area. In the estuary, the maximum seasonal average value of DZn accompanied by the lowest seasonal average of PZn in April inspite of the high uptake in spring suggest that desorption was the dominant process. The minimum regional averages of both zinc forms at the estuarine opening and the highest average of PZn near Edfina Barage are correlated with the amounts of SM, which decreased toward the estuarine mouth. The vertical values of dissolved cadmium (DCd) were much lower in the estuary than the other metals. They showed in both environments irregular variations with depth. The bottom maximum value of DCd can be attributed mainly to contamination from the sediments. There was a distinct seasonal variation of DCd. The minimum seasonal average value of DCd in the estuary in April seems to be caused by its specific binding to living plankton found in abundance. The minimum regional average of DCd value was found at the estuarine mouth. The decrease in Cd concentration due to removal from dissolved state is most pronounced in the early stage of mixing. The correlation coefficients of DCd were positive with salinity and negative with SM, indicating that Cd increased seaward. Statistical correlation between Cd and Zn concludes that the factors affecting their distribution are generally the same.  相似文献

Two surveys of Lamanea in South Wales rivers have given details of its distribution, seasonality and range of tolerance to various environmental parameters, with particular reference to temperature, current velocity and suspended solids.Temperature, current velocity and suspended solids had most effect. Such findings were confirmed by principal component and correlation coefficient analysis.These investigations also suggest that abundant growths of Lemanea may be used in a limited manner as indicative of oligotrophic and metal free waters especially during Spring.In addition, transplants of Lemanea from the upper to the lower reaches of the River Usk and vice versa were studied to clarify the effect of suspended solids in nature.Using the 14C technique for primary production proved to be a successful method with Lamanea for comparison with chlorophyll a extraction and phycoerythrin. The importance of the latter in energy transfer for photosynthesis was revealed for this genus. A combination of various simple and cheap methods for the extraction of the pigment phycoerythrin was used successfully for the first time in red algal studies.Procedures for estimating percentage cover, standing crop and the presence/absence of the plant are given and the statistical reliability of the methods is evaluated.  相似文献

Many estuaries of medium to high tidal range exhibit an accumulation of fine cohesive material in their upper reaches in the region of the limit of saline intrusion. Much, or all, of this material is suspended each tidal cycle and the entire region undergoes a seasonal variation which appears to depend on fluvial input. Two factors which are throught to influence the formation and maintenance of turbidity maxima are the differing magnitudes of the bed shear stress (τ0) on flood and ebb tides and the large vertical density gradient which developes on the ebb tide. Crucial to the importance of the first factor is that τ0 exceeds a critical value, at which erosion occurs, for a greater period on the flood than on the ebb. The effect of the density gradient is that upward propagation of bed generated eddies is inhibited and the sediment is not transported into the upper part of the flow where it will be most effectively transported. It is not clear which, if either, of these mechanisms is dominant. Data consisting of vertical profiles of velocity, salinity and suspended solids were collected at four stations in the Tamar estuary during a high range tidal cycle. One station, at which the depth mean salinity (S d ) varied from 0.0 to ∼ 12.0‰, was occupied permanently. The other stations were occupied such that data were collected asS d varied in the range 0.0 to ∼ 4.0‰. In this way each station was occupied for a period of time on the ebb and flood tide. Observations show that during the early ebb, when the flow is relatively deep and slow, stratification persist untilS d ∼ 0.0‰ and that no significant transport occurs while the flow is saline but that there is a rapid increase in suspended solids concentrations after this time. During the later ebb the shallower faster flow allowed the density gradient to be erode and significant transport was observed atS d ∼ 5.0‰. On the flood tide the flow in the low salinity region is well-mixed troughout. Computation of the fluxes and total transport per unit breath of estuary show that on the ebb tide the quantity of solid material being transported by the low salinity (0–3‰) region remains nearly constant as this region of the flow is advebted seaward. On the flood tide, however, as the same region is advected landward the quantity of material being transported increases. It is concluded that in the Tamar estuary the early ebb tide stratification contributed to the formation and maintenance of a turbidity maximum which is strongly associated with the low salinity region of the flow. It is also speculated that the differences in the ebb and flood tide transport are caused by differences in the availability of mobile material on the bed at different stages of the tidal cycle.  相似文献
