Performances of single-stage and two-stage sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems were investigated for treating dairy wastewater. A single-stage SBR system was tested with 10,000 mg/l chemical oxygen demand (COD) influent at three hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 1, 2, and 3 days and 20,000 mg/l COD influent at four HRTs of 1, 2, 3, and 4 days. A 1-day HRT was found sufficient for treating 10,000-mg/l COD wastewater, with the removal efficiency of 80.2% COD, 63.4% total solids, 66.2% volatile solids, 75% total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and 38.3% total nitrogen from the liquid effluent. Two-day HRT was believed sufficient for treating 20,000-mg/l COD dairy wastewater if complete ammonia oxidation is not desired. However, 4-day HRT needs to be used for achieving complete ammonia oxidation. A two-stage system consisting of an SBR and a complete-mix biofilm reactor was capable of achieving complete ammonia oxidation and comparable carbon, solids, and nitrogen removal while using at least 1/3 less HRT as compared to the single SBR system.  相似文献

Moving-bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) have been employed worldwide as an efficient technology for the treatment of a diverse set of wastewaters. Although the attached biomass represents the major fraction of solids in MBBR systems, there is still no standard for its reliable quantification. An extensive literature review indicated that several methods for attached biomass assessment are applied, hindering the comparability of results issued from different studies. Therefore, the most reported methods for biofilm quantification in the MBBR literature were compared using three different carriers. The results revealed that the performance of each method was biased depending on the carrier type and shape. Moreover, differences in total attached solids (TAS) concentrations varied from 13% up to more than 90%, depending on the employed method for a given carrier. Overall, direct weighing of the carrier containing the biofilm, accounting for the clean carrier weight, and manual extraction of the biofilm, preceded or not by sonication for at least 15 min, were the most suitable techniques for assessing TAS and the volatile/total solids ratio in non-porous medias, respectively. The results here presented may be used as a frame of reference for standardization of the methods for assessing the biofilm mass in MBBR carriers.

Respirometry was used for the characterization of active autotrophic and heterotrophic biomass in a pilot scale moving bed bioreactor (MBBR). For this purpose biofilm samples attached to the carrier elements of the MBBR were transferred to a static gas/static liquid type respirometer with intermittent aeration. Known amounts of ammonia nitrogen and acetate were added to the respirometer. The dissolved oxygen (DO) decrease during the non-aeration phase was measured and used to calculate the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of the active biomass. The resulting respirograms featured the typical endogenous and exogenous respiration phases and the shape of the respirogram was as expected from analogous respirometry with activated sludge. The OUR response was modelled with the activated sludge model ASM1 and the relevant kinetic parameter values for autotrophic and heterotrophic growth were adjusted. The adjusted parameter set and data originating from a 4-day long intensive measurement campaign were used for modelling and simulation of the pilot scale MBBR. The parameter estimation resulted in a good dynamic simulation of ammonia and nitrate variations in the effluent of the MBBR. Important MBBR properties including biofilm age, biofilm composition, and both attachment and detachment rate were extracted from the model.  相似文献

Anaerobic bioreactors supplemented with membrane technology have become quite popular, owing to their favorable energy recovery characteristics. In this study, a lab-scale anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) was assessed in experimental treatments of pre-settled dilute municipal wastewater obtained from a full-scaled wastewater treatment plant. The MBR system was operated in continuous flow mode for 440 days. To evaluate the performance of the AnMBR under various loading rates, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was reduced in a stepwise manner (from 2 to 0.5 days). Afterward, the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were reduced from 7,000 to 3,000 mg/L in increments of 1,000 mg/L, resulting in a decrease in solids retention time (SRT) at a constant HRT of 1.0 day. The soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentration in the feed varied between 38 and 131 mg/L, whereas the average permeate SCOD ranged between 18 and 37 mg/L, reflecting excellent effluent quality. The AnMBR performance in terms of COD removal proved stable, despite variations in influent characteristics and HRT and SRT changes. The concentration of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) was reduced with decreases in HRT from 42 to 22 mg VS/mg of MLSS, thereby indicating that the increased biomass concentration biodegraded the EPS at lower HRTs. AnMBR is, therefore, demonstrably a feasible option for the treatment of dilute wastewater with separate stage nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes.  相似文献

Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) incorporates benefits provided by both attached and suspended growth systems. It is an advanced high rate wastewater treatment technology with high treatment efficiency; low capital, operational, maintenance and replacement cost; single reliable and robust operation procedure. Moreover, this technology is applicable to wide range of wastewater flows ranging from 10,000 to 150,000 m3 day?1. The MBBR has proved to be effective in removing up to 90 % chemical oxygen demand and 95 % biochemical oxygen demand with nutrients from the effluent stream at optimum condition, provided there is sufficient retention time. It is a cost-effective way of upgrading existing wastewater treatment system as it is efficient, compact and easy to operate. This process can be provided for new sewage treatment works or for retrofitting existing wastewater treatment plants where a higher treated effluent standard is required without any running and capital cost. The performance of MBBR depends on the percent of media provided in the reactor, surface area of the biocarrier, dissolved oxygen and the organic loading. Various mathematical models are also described in this review paper which is generally used to calculate the reactor volume, effluent organic concentration and substrate removal rate.  相似文献

The use of membrane sequencing batch reactors, operated at HRT of 8, 16 and 24 h, was considered for the treatment of a synthetic petroleum wastewater. Increase in HRT resulted in statistically significant decrease in MLSS. Removal efficiencies higher than 97% were found for the three model hydrocarbon pollutants at all HRTs, with air stripping making a small contribution to overall removal. Particle size distribution (PSD) and microscopic analysis showed reduction in the protozoan populations in the activated sludge with decreasing HRT. PSD analysis also showed a higher proportion of larger and smaller sized particles at the lowest HRT. The rate of membrane fouling was found to increase with decreasing HRT; SMP, especially carbohydrate SMP, and mixed liquor apparent viscosity also showed a pronounced increase with decreasing HRT, whereas the concentration of EPS and its components decreased. FTIR analysis identified organic compounds as the main component of membrane pore fouling.  相似文献

AIMS: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the development of aerobically grown microbial granules. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five column-shaped sequential aerobic sludge blanket reactors (SASBRs) were seeded with aerobically grown microbial granules and operated in a cyclic mode at different HRTs. At the shortest HRT of 1 h, the strong hydraulic pressure triggered biomass washout and led to reactor failure. At the longest HRT of 24 h, which represented the weakest hydraulic selection in this study, aerobic granules were gradually substituted by bioflocs because of the lower frequency of volumetric exchange. Within the optimum range of HRTs from 2 to 12 h, however, aerobic granules became stabilized in the presence of adequate hydraulic selection in the reactors, with good mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) retention, high volumetric chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, low sludge volume index (SVI) values, good effluent quality, low sludge production rate, stronger and more compact structures, high cell hydrophobicity and high ratios of extracellular polysaccharides (PS) to extracellular proteins (PN). CONCLUSIONS: HRTs between 2 and 12 h provided the hydraulic selection pressures favourable for the formation and maintenance of stable aerobic granules with good settleability and activity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first systematic study on the effect of HRT on heterotrophic aerobic granules. The results of the investigation are useful in understanding how aerobic granules can be applied for wastewater treatment.  相似文献

A combined thermophilic-mesophilic wastewater treatment was studied using a laboratory-scale thermophilic activated sludge process (ASP) followed by mesophilic ASP or a thermophilic suspended carrier biofilm process (SCBP) followed by mesophilic ASP, both systems treating diluted molasses (dilution factor 1:500 corresponding GF/A-filtered COD (COD(filt)) of 1900+/-190 mgl(-1)). With hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12-18 h the thermophilic ASP and thermophilic SCBP removed 60+/-13% and 62+/-7% of COD(filt), respectively, with HRT of 8 h the removals were 48+/-1% and 69+/-4%. The sludge volume index (SVI) was notably lower in the thermophilic SCBP (measured from suspended sludge) than in the thermophilic ASP. Under the lowest HRT the mesophilic ASP gave better performance (as SVI, COD(filt), and COD(tot) removals) after the thermophilic SCBP than after the thermophilic ASP. Measured sludge yields were low (less than 0.1 kg suspended solids (SS) kg COD(filt removed)(-1)) in all processes. Both thermophilic treatments removed 80-85% of soluble COD (COD(sol)) whereas suspended COD (COD(susp)) and colloidal COD (COD(col)) were increased. Both mesophilic post-treatments removed all COD(col) and most of the COD(susp) from the thermophilic effluents. In conclusion, combined thermophilic-mesophilic treatment appeared to be easily operable and produced high effluent quality.  相似文献

Development of an improved reactor configuration of anaerobic filter was carried out for the elimination of clogging of filter media. The experiments over different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) indicated that the HRT of 12 h was the most appropriate one for the system studied while treating the municipal wastewater, which resulted 90% and 95% BOD and COD reduction, respectively. Reduction up to 95% in suspended solids concentration could be achieved without any pretreatment. The specific biogas yield obtained was 0.35 m(3) CH(4)/kgCODr with 70% of CH(4) content in the biogas generated from the system at the HRT of 12 h. Operational problems such as clogging of filter media were not observed throughout the period of study over 600 d.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to report on the physical characteristics of carrier material (perlite), biomass growth on the carrier material and the biogas production during an apparent steady state period in an inverse anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (IAFBR) for treating high strength organic wastewater. Before starting up the reactor, physical properties of the carrier material were determined. One millimeter diameter perlite particle is found to have a wet specific density of 295 kg/m(3) with specific surface area of 7.010 m(2)/g. This material has provided a good surface for biomass attachment and development. The biofilm concentration (in terms of attached volatile solids (AVS)) attached to carrier material was found to be 0.66 g(AVS)/g(solid). Most particles have been covered with a thin biofilm of uniform thickness. Once the inverse anaerobic fluidized bed system reached the steady state, the organic load was increased step wise by reducing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 2 days to 0.16 day, while maintaining the constant feed of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. This system has achieved 84% COD removal and reached the biogas production of 13.22 l/l/d at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 35 kgCOD/m(3)/d.  相似文献

A fixed-film (biofilm) reactor was designed and its performance was determined at various retention times. The goal was to find the optimal retention time for recycling plant nutrients in an advanced life support system, to minimize the size, mass, and volume (hold-up) of a production model. The prototype reactor was tested with aqueous leachate from wheat crop residue at 24, 12, 6, and 3 h hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrates and other plant nutrients, carbohydrates, total phenolics, and microbial counts were monitored to characterize reactor performance. BOD removal decreased significantly from 92% at the 24 h HRT to 73% at 3 h. Removal of phenolics was 62% at the 24 h retention time, but 37% at 3 h. Dissolved oxygen concentrations, nitric acid consumption, and calcium and magnesium removals were also affected by HRT. Carbohydrate removals, carbon dioxide (CO2) productions, denitrification, potassium concentrations, and microbial counts were not affected by different retention times. A 6 h HRT will be used in future studies to determine the suitability of the bioreactor effluent for hydroponic plant production.  相似文献

The performance of a laboratory-scale sewage treatment system composed of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) at a temperature of (22–35 °C) was evaluated. The entire treatment system was operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT’s) of 13.3, 10 and 5.0 h. An overall reduction of 80–86% for CODtotal; 51–73% for CODcolloidal and 20–55% for CODsoluble was found at a total HRT of 5–10 h, respectively. By prolonging the HRT to 13.3 h, the removal efficiencies of CODtotal, CODcolloidal and CODsoluble increased up to 92, 89 and 80%, respectively. However, the removal efficiency of CODsuspended in the combined system remained unaffected when increasing the total HRT from 5 to 10 h and from 10 to 13.3 h. This indicates that, the removal of CODsuspended was independent on the imposed HRT. Ammonia-nitrogen removal in MBBR treating UASB reactor effluent was significantly influenced by organic loading rate (OLR). 62% of ammonia was eliminated at OLR of 4.6 g COD m−2 day−1. The removal efficiency was decreased by a value of 34 and 43% at a higher OLR’s of 7.4 and 17.8 g COD m−2 day−1, respectively. The mean overall residual counts of faecal coliform in the final effluent were 8.9 × 104 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 13.3 h, 4.9 × 105 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 10 h and 9.4 × 105 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 5.0 h, corresponding to overall log10 reduction of 2.3, 1.4 and 0.7, respectively. The discharged sludge from UASB–MBBR exerts an excellent settling property. Moreover, the mean value of the net sludge yield was only 6% in UASB reactor and 7% in the MBBR of the total influent COD at a total HRT of 13.3 h. Accordingly, the use of the combined UASB–MBBR system for sewage treatment is recommended at a total HRT of 13.3 h.  相似文献

Wastewater from a food-manufacturing plant with a low concentration of organic matter below 100 mg/l TOC was first treated at 37°C in an anaerobic fluidized-bed reactor (AFBR) or in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB). The TOC removal efficiency in both reactors decreased from 85% to 65% as the influent TOC concentration decreased from 100 to 35 mg/l at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h. Treatment at an HRT of 4 h resulted in an effluent TOC concentration of 11 to 15 mg/l. The concentration of suspended solids in the effluent could be reduced to 20 mg/l, which corresponded to 7% of that of the influent. The effluent from both reactors was then treated anaerobically in a fixed-bed reactor system. The TOC concentration and optical density (OD) of the effluent from the aerobic treatment were reduced to 5 mg/l and 0.005, respectively, at an HRT of 2 h. When anaerobically or aerobically treated effluent was passed over an activated carbon column, the effluent TOC concentration was reduced to 2 to 3 mg/l. The conductivity of 1.3 mS/cm in raw wastewater, which was not removed through the above treatments, was reduced to 0.001 mS/cm on an ion-exchange resin column. An effluent quality corresponding to that of ultra-pure water for industrial use was finally attained by the treatment in this multi-step system.  相似文献

Mathematical models are useful tools for studying and exploring biological conversion processes as well as microbial competition in biological treatment processes. A single‐species biofilm model was used to describe biofilm reactor operation at three different hydraulic retention times (HRT). The single‐species biofilm model was calibrated with sparse experimental data using the Monte Carlo filtering method. This calibrated single‐species biofilm model was then extended to a multi‐species model considering 10 different heterotrophic bacteria. The aim was to study microbial diversity in bulk phase biomass and biofilm, as well as the competition between suspended and attached biomass. At steady state and independently of the HRT, Monte Carlo simulations resulted only in one unique dominating bacterial species for suspended and attached biomass. The dominating bacterial species was determined by the highest specific substrate affinity (ratio of µ/KS). At a short HRT of 20 min, the structure of the microbial community in the bulk liquid was determined by biomass detached from the biofilm. At a long HRT of 8 h, both biofilm detachment and microbial growth in the bulk liquid influenced the microbial community distribution. Biotechnol. The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sulfide toxicity on ethanol and acetate utilization were studied in a sulfate-reducing fluidized-bed reactor (FBR) treating acidic metal-containing wastewater. The effects of HRT were determined with continuous flow FBR experiments. The percentage of ethanol oxidation was 99.9% even at a HRT of 6.5 h (loading of 2.6 g ethanol L(-1) d(-1)), while acetate accumulated in the FBR with HRTs below 12 h (loading of 1.4 g ethanol L(-1) d(-1)). Partial acetate utilization was accompanied by decreased concentrations of dissolved sulfide (DS) and alkalinity in the effluent, and eventually resulted in process failure when HRT was decreased to 6.1 h (loading of 2.7 g ethanol L(-1) d(-1)). Zinc and iron precipitation rates increased to over 600 mg L(-1) d(-1) and 300 mg L(-1) d(-1), respectively, with decreasing HRT. At HRT of 6.5 h, percent metal precipitation was over 99.9%, and effluent metal concentrations remained below 0.08 mg L(-1). Under these conditions, the alkalinity produced by substrate utilization increased the wastewater pH from 3 to 7.9-8.0. The percentage of electron flow from ethanol to sulfate reduction averaged 76 +/- 10% and was not affected by the HRT. The lowest HRT did not result in significant biomass washout from the FBR. The effect of sulfide toxicity on the sulfate-reducing culture was studied with batch kinetic experiments in the FBR. Noncompetitive inhibition model described well the sulfide inhibition of the sulfate-reducing culture. (DS) inhibition constants (K(i)) for ethanol and acetate oxidation were 248 mg S L(-1) and 356 mg S L(-1), respectively, and the corresponding K(i) values for H(2)S were 84 mg S L(-1) and 124 mg S L(-1). In conclusion, ethanol oxidation was more inhibited by sulfide toxicity than the acetate oxidation.  相似文献

The performance of continuous flow intermittent decant type sequencing batch (CFID) reactor treating the effluent of an UASB reactor treating domestic wastewater and operated at 8 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) was investigated. The CFID was operated at three different HRTs (22, 8 and 6 h) and three different dissolved oxygen (DO) patterns (<0.5, 2.5–3.5 and 3.5–4.5 mg/L). The highest effluent quality was observed at the 8 h HRT and 2.5–3.5 mg/L DO concentration. At this operational condition, the average BOD, TSS, ammonia nitrogen and fecal coliform removal efficiencies were 83, 90, 74 and 99 %, respectively. The CFID is a promising post-treatment option for existing UASB systems, with a final effluent quality that comply with receiving water and effluent reuse criteria.  相似文献

Summary A high-strength baker's yeast effluent was anaerobically treated using a hybrid digester under mesophilic conditions. The digester was subjected to a substrate COD concentration of 21 767 mg/I at three different HRTs. At HRTs of 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0 d, the digester reduced the substrate COD by 76, 61 and 33%, respectively. Although the best COD removal was obtained at an OLR of 7.30 kg COD/m3.d, the highest COD removal rate (6.51 kg COD/M3-d) was found at 10.65 kg COD/m3.d at an HRT of 2.0 d. The low methane yield and VFA accumulation found in the digester effluent, indicated inhibition on methanogenic level and this was considered to be the rate-limiting step during the anaerobic treatment process. The overall efficiency of the digester indicated that this digester design and support medium was suitable for the treatment of a high-strength, sulfate-rich baker's yeast effluent.  相似文献

To estimate the bioleaching performance of chalcopyrite for various hydraulic residence times (HRTs), laboratory-scale bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate was carried out in a continuous bubble column reactor with three different HRTs of 120, 80 and 40 h, respectively. An extraction rate and ratio of 0.578 g Cu l−1 h−1 and 39.7%, respectively, were achieved for an HRT of 80 h at a solids concentration of 10% (w/v). Lower bioleaching performances than this were obtained for a longer HRT of 120 h and a shorter HRT of 40 h. In addition, there was obvious competition between Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to oxidize ferrous iron, causing large compositional differences between the microbial communitys obtained for the different HRTs. Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans were found to be the dominant microbes for the longer HRT (120 h). Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans became the dominant species when the HRT was decreased. The proportion of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans was comparatively constant in the microbial community throughout the three process stages.  相似文献

This work investigates the impact of structural parameters on the rheological behaviour of apple purees. Reconstructed apple purees from 0 g/100 g up to 2.32 g/100 g of insoluble solids content and varying in particle size were prepared. Three different particle size distributions were obtained by mechanical treatment only, to modify both size and morphology of the particles without modifying the intrinsic rigidity of the cell walls. Rheological measurements showed that the insoluble solids content have a first order effect on the rheological behaviour of the suspensions: three concentrations domains were observed in both dynamic and flow measurements. A model is proposed for each domain. The existence of a weak network between particles is clearly shown over a critical concentration of insoluble solids (cell walls) depending on particle size distribution (semi-diluted domain). In a concentrated domain, particles are on close packing conditions and their apparent volume begin to shrink. Particle size and shape also play an important role on the rheological behaviour of reconstructed apple puree. Due to their irregular shape, cell clusters clog the medium at lower concentration compared to individual cells.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been regarded as the rate limiting step of anaerobic sludge digestion. Therefore, in this study, the effect of ultrasound and hydraulic residence time during sludge hydrolysis was investigated with the goal of enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). WAS was ultrasonically disintegrated for hydrolysis, and it was semi-continuously fed to an anaerobic digesters at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The results of these experiments showed that the solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies when using ultrasonically disintegrated sludge were higher during AD than the control sludge. The longer the HRT, the higher the removal efficiencies of solids and COD, while methane production increased with lower HRT. Sludge with 30% hydrolysis produced 7 × more methane production than the control sludge. The highest methane yields were 0.350 m(3)/kg volatile solids (VS)(add) and 0.301 m(3)/kg COD(con) for 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge, respectively. In addition, we found that excess ultrasound irradiation may inhibit AD since the 50% hydrolyzed sludge produced lower methane yields than 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge.  相似文献
