Psychophysiological analysis of the relationship between the level of consciousness and the brain activation permitted an identification of three levels of consciousness at the transition from wakefulness to sleep. A change in the intensity and quality of involuntarily mental processes served as an index of the level of consciousness according to subjects' self-reports. It was found that a certain EEG profile corresponds to each level of consciousness under study. Data obtained showed that the lowest level of activation corresponds to a state in which a subject notes an inhibition of "internal speech", "failure of thoughts". At this case the dynamics of the EEG high frequency rhythm changes which is possibly related to the mechanism of transmission of cognitive information.  相似文献

Transition from wakefulness to drowsiness was used as a model of a gradual decrease in the consciousness level. Subjects' self-reported changes in the contents of consciousness, namely: the intensity and quality of involuntary mental processes, served as an indicator of the consciousness level. Each observed level of consciousness was shown to be characterised by a certain EEG profile. It was also shown that the state in which the subject signals of a slowdown of the "internal speech" or the "lapse of thoughts" corresponds to the lowest level of activation. In this case, the interhemisphere connections involving the main mechanism of cognitive information transmission, i.e. the EEG high-frequency rhythms, becomes suppressed.  相似文献

Asymmetry of different human EEG indices was studied at different levels of consciousness. Subjects' self-reported changes in the content of consciousness: the intensity and quality of involuntary mental processes served as indicator of the level of consciousness. It was shown that a certain profile of EEG asymmetry corresponded to each the observed level of consciousness. In active state of consciousness, the connections in the high-frequency bands: beta-2 and gamma, were more pronounced in the left hemisphere of the brain. At the same time, transition of the focus of coherent connections to the right hemisphere was characteristic of the state of inhibition of "internal speech". The interhemisphere dynamics of autospectra amplitude and foci of coherent connections supports the notion that the character of interhemisphere asymmetry of the brain bioelectrical activity depends on its functional state.  相似文献

In 70 Ss EEG coherence, amplitude and frequency characteristics as well as formal-dynamic (temperamental) properties were compared with the two dimensions of motivation involved in the choice of profession--its subjective "value" and the probability of its achievement ("accessability"). It was shown that the persons orienting themselves to the subjective value of the future profession tend to possess those features of temperament that testify to the stronger, more mobile and more labile nervous system as distinct from the subjects orienting themselves to the higher level of accessability. It was also shown that the persons with a higher level of the subjective value had a much higher level of EEG cortical activation in both hemispheres of the brain. The subjects with higher magnitudes of "accessability" were characterized by a lower level of brain activation.  相似文献

Multiparametric comparative analysis of spatial organization of EEG was carried out in 137 alcoholics and 131 heroin addicts. Common and different deviations from normal EEG (105 control subjects) were found. Global alterations of EEG spatial organization were observed in drug addicts (as compared to alcoholics). Such changes characterized increasing synchronizing effects of mesolimbic and brainstem structures on the brain cortex. The ethanol effects were more specific and asymmetric. Changes in EEG spectral-coherence characteristics were revealed in all frequency band, however, maximal changes took place in the high-frequency theta in drug addicts and in narrow-frequency alpha subranges in alcoholics. Different effects on the high-frequency EEG component (19.00-21.25 Hz) and information-energy index (coherence-to-spectral power ratio) suggest the difference influence of ethanol and heroin on emotional-motivational and cognitive processes as well as the level of consciousness. The obtained data on EEG discrimination of alcoholism and drug addiction (the inverse problem solution) on the basis of "specific" EEG patterns appear to have considerable promise in development of systems of occupational selection.  相似文献

Background

fMRI and EEG are two non-invasive functional imaging techniques within cognitive neuroscience that have complementary advantages to obtain both temporal and spatial information. The multi-source interference task (MSIT) has been shown to generate robust activations of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) on both a single-subject level and in group averages, in fMRI studies. We have now simultaneously acquired fMRI and EEG during a cognitive interference task.

Materials and Methods

Healthy volunteers were tested in an MRI scanner with simultaneous EEG and fMRI recordings during the MSIT.

Results

The interference condition significantly increased the reaction time in the task. The fMRI analyses revealed activation of dACC as expected, in all subjects at the individual level and in group analyses. The posterior cingulate cortex was de-activated. Simultaneous EEG showed the expected anterior distribution of the interference effect, as it was restricted to frontal sites within a time frame of 80–120 ms post response.

Conclusion

The MSIT task is a reliable task for interference evaluation. fMRI shows robust activation of dACC and by adding EEG, an interference effect can be noticed within a temporal interval of 80–120 ms after the response, as a CRN (correct response negativity). This means that EEG could add a more detailed temporal aspect to the fMRI data from an interference task, and that despite the hostile environment within an MRI scanner, EEG data could be used.  相似文献

The frequency-amplitude characteristics of the brain electrical activity were studied in two groups of subjects: (1) with high and (2) with low indexes of "emotional ear" (the ability to successfully recognize emotions in speech). Comparison of EEG power characteristics between the two groups of subjects permitted the authors to make a conclusion that the persons with lower indexes of "emotional ear" had a much higher EEG activation level as compared to the persons with higher "emotional ear" indexes. A different dynamics of the cortical activation was also observed in the process of recognition of emotions by alpha-rhythm amplitude. It was shown that the persons with higher indexes of recognition had higher alpha-rhythm amplitude, whereas the persons who were less successful in recognition of speech emotions had a contrary tendency: the amplitude on the alpha band decreased in the process of the experiment.  相似文献

Specific changes of bioelectrical brain activity was found in 27 patients with different level of posttraumatic consciousness depression by the methods of crosscorrelation, coherence and factor analysis of EEG. The changes of activity of morphofunctional systems of intracerebral integrations were revealed partially by decreasing of unspecific activity from brainstem structures reflected with increasing of slow wave activity and decreasing of EEG coherence in alpha- and beta-range. Depression of system organization of interconnections of bioelectrical brain activity in frontal and occipital regions of both hemispheres was also detected, and testified about decreasing of intercortical and thalamocortical brain system action under brain dislocation. The changes of integrative brain system activity, provides interhemispheric interaction, had the specific characted. Our results propose a "facilitation" of activity of system, providing "direct" interhemispheric connections through corpus callosum and other commissural tracts of telencephalon as a sequel of mesodiencephalon structures depression with steady reciprocal, antiphase relations of slow weve activity in symmetrical areas of hemispheres in coma II patients. The data of our research had shown no complete disintegration of system brain activity in coma II patients in spite of consciousness and brainstem reflexes depression.  相似文献

In the paper Pavlov's idea is used about "the bright spot of consciousness" as a zone of increased excitability which moves over the cerebral cortex. Zone of increased activation is revealed migrating from the frontal parts of the left hemisphere to the occipital parts of the right hemisphere. By means of various methods (record of amplitude and latency of the visual evoked responses, frequency and amplitude of the dominant rhythm, spectral-coherent analysis of the electroencephalogram) the activation of focus in the cerebral cortex was singled out, which moved, depending on the novelty, complication and degree of automatization of the task, from the frontal parts of the left hemisphere to the occipital parts of the right hemisphere. A parallel is drawn between Pavlov's hypothesis on the focus of consciousness as foci of increased brain activity, and revealed foci of activation. The conclusion is made about fluctuations of consciousness level as a factor which is in the basis of activation focus migration.  相似文献

To study the problem of consciousness an original structural-functional approach has been applied with the use of possibilities of spectral-coherent EEG analysis in evaluation of human brain functional state together with the specificity of the cerebral coma having local focal belonging. It is revealed that the most informative signs for characteristics of consciousness state are peculiarities of reconstruction of intercentral relations of the electrical brain processes: decrease of mean levels of the EEG coherence at progressive development of coma; staged approach to relative norm at regressive course of comatose state and recovery of consciousness; their stability on the low level at prolonged coma; increase in low or high (above optimum) frequencies band at neighbouring with coma states of consciousness. It may be considered that one of the necessary conditions of normal state of consciousness is preservation of the optimum level of correlation of electrical brain activity alongside with frequency-regional specificity of the EEG coherence spectrum. Any deviation from the optimum is unfavourable condition for normal course of cerebral reactions because of the disturbance of intercentral connections mosaic necessary for their realization.  相似文献

Background

It has been previously shown that loss of consciousness is associated with a breakdown of dominating fronto-parietal feedback connectivity as assessed by electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. Structure and strength of network connectivity may change over time. Aim of the current study is to investigate cortico-cortical connectivity at different time intervals during consciousness and unconsciousness. For this purpose, EEG symbolic transfer entropy (STEn) was calculated to indicate cortico-cortical information transfer at different transfer times.

Methods

The study was performed in 15 male volunteers. 29-channel EEG was recorded during consciousness and propofol-induced unconsciousness. EEG data were analyzed by STEn, which quantifies intensity and directionality of the mutual information flow between two EEG channels. STEn was computed over fronto-parietal channel pair combinations (10 s length, 0.5–45 Hz total bandwidth) to analyze changes of intercortical directional connectivity. Feedback (fronto → parietal) and feedforward (parieto → frontal) connectivity was calculated for transfer times from 25 ms to 250 ms in 5 ms steps. Transfer times leading to maximum directed interaction were identified to detect changes of cortical information transfer (directional connectivity) induced by unconsciousness (p<0.05).

Results

The current analyses show that fronto-parietal connectivity is a non-static phenomenon. Maximum detected interaction occurs at decreased transfer times during propofol-induced unconsciousness (feedback interaction: 60 ms to 40 ms, p = 0.002; feedforward interaction: 65 ms to 45 ms, p = 0.001). Strength of maximum feedback interaction decreases during unconsciousness (p = 0.026), while no effect of propofol was observed on feedforward interaction. During both consciousness and unconsciousness, intensity of fronto-parietal interaction fluctuates with increasing transfer times.

Conclusion

Non-stationarity of directional connectivity may play a functional role for cortical network communication as it shows characteristic changes during propofol-induced unconsciousness.  相似文献

In order to study the possibility of EEG discrimination of genetically determined emotionality (increased propensity to emotional and stress reactions and anxiety) brain electrical activity was recorded in rats of two strains: Maudsley Reactive and Maudsley Nonreactive (24 derivations from the convexital skull surface were used). The program package "Synchro-EEG" was used for EEG processing. It was demonstrated that the two rat strains were significantly different in 120 EEG parameters of 840 ones analyzed. On the basis of 37 parameters, each rat was correctly recognized as belonging to the respective group with the error of 4.89%. The analysis of the detected signs allowed their classification to be performed in accordance with the peculiarities of the emotional and cognitive processes and the level of nonspecific activation. Specific forms of interaction between these components in the system of emotional reactions were revealed.  相似文献

A review of experimental and theoretical works upon perception of emotions in speech is introduced. The main approaches to experimental study and different types of stimulation are considered. Clinical research and experiments upon healthy subjects investigate the brain organization of emotional speech recognition. In the works by Rusalova, Kislova integral psychophysiological preconditions for the successfulness of the recognition of speech emotional expression were studied. As a result of the investigation, extreme groups of persons were identified: with high indices of "emotional hearing" and with low level of recognition of emotions. Analysis of EEG included comparison of different EEG parameters between two groups: values of EEG power, the dominating frequencies, percentage of different EEG-bands in the summary EEG power, coherence, values of EEG inter- and intra-hemispheric asymmetry, etc. The subjects with low identification rates showed a higher brain activation and reactivity both during the emotion identification task and at rest as compared to the subjects with high identification rates. The data obtained reveal specific activation within the left frontal regions, as well as the right posterior temporal cortex during nonverbal recognition of emotions.  相似文献

A capability for voluntary regulation of the intensity of spontaneous mental verbal associations (without external feedback) was found in several persons from 28 examined subjects. Due to this capability, these persons could control the level of consciousness and voluntary produce the corresponding EEG changes from the EEG enhancement to substantial decrease in its power (to appearance of the flattened EEG).  相似文献

The EEG data obtained in 4-hour experiments with simulation of monotonous performance at a computer display were analyzed. A certain difference in the dynamics of the functional state was revealed between the groups of subjects which differed in their background level of cortical activation. Practically the same performance efficiency in these groups was supported by different mechanisms: via self-regulation mechanisms in the subjects with a high initial level of cortical activity and by involvement of "self-correction" realized through activation of nonspecific subcortical brain structures. The development of the excessive stress in the second group of subjects expressed in an increase of theta rhythm power density indicated the higher "physiological cost" of monotonous operator's work for persons with low level of background cortical activation.  相似文献

Changes of oxygen tension level (pO2) in the visual cortex, dorsal hippocampus, lateral hypothalamus and central grey substance were studied during wake-sleep cycle in rats. The dependence was established of pO2 level changes on the character of behavioural reactions and on the accompanying hippocampal EEG activity: during orienting-investigatory and active defensive behaviour and also during paradoxical sleep, accompanied by hippocampal theta rhythm, pO2 level increased; during passive-defensive behaviour "freezing" reaction accompanied by desynchronization of the hippocampal rhythmic, the level of pO2 decreased. The obtained data confirm Routtenberg hypothesis about two relatively independent systems of ascending activation with different types of hippocampal EEG activity and supplement it with a thesis that the activity of these systems is accompanied by different shifts of brain oxidative metabolism.  相似文献

To measure the level of residual cognitive function in patients with disorders of consciousness, the use of electrophysiological and neuroimaging protocols of increasing complexity is recommended. This work presents an EEG-based method capable of assessing at an individual level the integrity of the auditory cortex at the bedside of patients and can be seen as the first cortical stage of this hierarchical approach. The method is based on two features: first, the possibility of automatically detecting the presence of a N100 wave and second, in showing evidence of frequency processing in the auditory cortex with a machine learning based classification of the EEG signals associated with different frequencies and auditory stimulation modalities. In the control group of twelve healthy volunteers, cortical frequency processing was clearly demonstrated. EEG recordings from two patients with disorders of consciousness showed evidence of partially preserved cortical processing in the first patient and none in the second patient. From these results, it appears that the classification method presented here reliably detects signal differences in the encoding of frequencies and is a useful tool in the evaluation of the integrity of the auditory cortex. Even though the classification method presented in this work was designed for patients with disorders of consciousness, it can also be applied to other pathological populations.  相似文献

Objective The “Triarchic body-pathway relaxation technique” (TBRT) is a form of ancient Chinese mindfulness-based meditation professed to give rise to positive emotions and a specific state of consciousness in which deep relaxation and internalized attention coexist. The purpose of this study was to examine the EEG pattern generated during the practice of this mindfulness exercise, and compare it to music listening which has been shown to induce positive emotions. Methods Nineteen college students (aged 19–22 years) participated in the study. Each participant listened to both the TBRT and music audiotapes while EEG was recorded. The order of presentation was counterbalanced to avoid order effect. Two EEG indicators were used: (1) alpha asymmetry index, an indicator for left-sided anterior activation, as measure of positive emotions, and (2) frontal midline theta activity, as a measure for internalized attention. Results Increased left-sided activation, a pattern associated with positive emotions, was found during both TBRT exercise and music conditions. However, only TBRT exercise was shown to exhibit greater frontal midline theta power, a pattern associated with internalized attention. Conclusions These results provided evidence to support that the TBRT gives rise to positive emotional experience, accompanied by focused internalized attention.  相似文献

Electroencephalography (EEG) was applied to evaluate the validity of the paw pinch reflex as an indicator of anaesthetic depth in rats which are anaesthetized with a single intraperitoneal dose of pentobarbital. After induction of the anaesthesia, characterized by the rapid loss of the animals' ability to maintain upright posture, the EEG of 10 out of 11 rats was dominated by paroxysmal (burst suppression) activity, associated with unconsciousness. In seven out of 11 rats, the paw pinch reflex was lost after onset of paroxysmal electroencephalographic activity. However, the paw pinch reflex remained present in four out of 11 animals, demonstrating that the response is independent of cortical activity. In five out of seven rats, the EEG still showed paroxysmal activity when the paw pinch reflex was regained. However, in two other rats the EEG returned to a pattern similar to that shown by awake animals, 4 and 21 min respectively, before the reflex was regained. These data indicate that in the pentobarbital-anaesthetized rat, presence of the paw pinch reflex is not related to the level of depression of electrical activity in the cerebral cortex, and consequently is probably not related to the level of consciousness. Based upon these findings it is concluded that the paw pinch reflex is unreliable as a sole indicator of anaesthetic depth.  相似文献
