Bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella fruticosawas evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance, and absence. According to our material P. fruticosais one of the most common bryozoan species in Norwegian fresh water, represented in samples from 251 localities. This species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71° 06 N (the northernmost record globally). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1179 m (maximum for Northern Europe). In most studies of freshwater bryozoans from the holarctic region, Plumatella fruticosahas been reported as widely distributed, but locally rare. In Norway, however, P. fruticosa is frequently found all over the country, even far to the north. The species apparently finds an optimal climate in the cold temperate and cold regions of Norway. Plumatella fruticosapreferred lakes, avoided slow-flowing rivers and ponds, and was absent in smaller water bodies. The species preferred somewhat higher elevation (400–900 m above sea level), but avoided lakes with the lowest summer temperatures (below 11 °C). P. fruticosa also preferred oligotrophic conditions with poor aquatic vegetation, stony shores, lakes poor in calcium and magnesium (sometimes almost comparable with distilled water), where the water was clear and colourless, and slightly acidic to neutral. The species also preferred lakes surrounded by Sphagnum bogs and was absent when pH was below 5.2. P. fruticosa avoided eutrophic conditions with rich aquatic vegetation, alkaline water (pH above 7.0), lakes with a higher content of calcium and magnesium and those with strongly coloured water (above 100 mg Pt l–1). In spite of its preference for ion-poor conditions, it was also found in a brackish water lake. For most environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere.  相似文献

The paper is based on material presented in five contributions [Hydrobiologia 421:1–24, 2000; 459: 103–123, 2001; 479: 11–22, 2002; 501: 179–198, 2003; Archives de lInstitut grand-ducal de Luxembourg. Section des Sciences naturelles, physiques et mathématiques, Nouvelle Série 44: 127–143, 2002]. Nine species of Bryozoa were collected during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water types in Norway. Five of the species occur throughout Norway (Plumatella fruticosa, P. repens, Paludicella articulata, Cristatella mucedo and Fredericella sultana) and one has a northerly range (Fredericella indica). With the exception of Plumatella repens, the northernmost records of these species globally are in Norway. All six species have been found at elevations of more than 1000m in South Norway, which is also their maximum elevation above sea level in Northern Europe. Three species (Plumatella fungosa, P. emarginata and P. casmiana) are rare and present only in lowland areas in South Norway. Lacourt [A Monograph of the Freshwater Bryozoa–Phylactolaemata. Zoologische Verhandelingen, Leiden 93: 1–159, 1968] considered an old and now mislaid sample from the same area to be Hyalinella punctata. Up to six species and an average of two were found in lakes. The mean numbers of species in ponds, and slow-flowing and rapid-flowing rivers were 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, respectively. Co-occurrence of pairs of species in lakes was investigated. For 10pairs, the number of cases of co-occurrence was significantly higher than expected on the basis of random distribution. This was ascribed to some shared ecological requirements. Only one pair (Paludicella articulataPlumatella fungosa) showed fewer cases of co-occurrence than expected. This was explained by differences in their geographical distribution and tolerance to ecological factors. Tolerance and other ecological responses were described for the six frequent species using two statistical methods. Method 1: frequency deviations, is based on the null hypothesis of random distribution. Ten environmental variables were studied (type of surface water, elevation above sea level, water temperature, aquatic vegetation, sediment, wave action, Ca, Mg, pH and water colour). The concepts absence, avoidance (frequency lower than expected), preference (frequency higher than expected) and presence (no significant deviation from expected frequency) were used. The degree of response of a particular species to a specific environmental variable was measured by the sum of the numerical values of the significant frequency deviations divided by the number of categories with significant deviations. The results can be used as adaptability indices or tolerance indices: the lower the index, the better a species is adapted for surviving with respect to the environmental variable in question. Diagrams showed (1) the relative strength of the response of the six frequent species, (2) the average index for each species for all variables and (3) the effect of each of the 10 environmental variables on the Bryozoa (the species treated as a unit: an ecological guild). Method 2: logistic regression, treated the presence or absence of each of the six frequent species as dependent variables using nine independent environmental variables. Comparison of the results of method 1 and 2, indicated that method 1, which gives details of how a species responds to different categories of a variable, was particularly useful.  相似文献

Bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella repens was evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance and absence. P. repens is one of the most common bryozoan species in Norway. It is represented at 227 localities in our material and by 29 additional records. The species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71°09N (the northernmost record on the European mainland). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1052 m (maximum for Northern Europe). P. repens preferred lakes, avoided rivers, and was absent from the smallest water bodies. The species preferred (1) low elevation (2–200 m above sea level), (2) medium water temperature, (3) rich aquatic vegetation (eutrophic conditions), (4) small wave action, (5) high content of calcium and magnesium, (6) pH 6.4–9.6, and (7) rather high water colour. Otherwise P. repens avoided (1) habitats above 500 m but occurred up to 1052 m, (2) the lowest water temperature intervals, (3) sites with poor aquatic vegetation and stony shores, (4) medium wave action, (5) sites with a low calcium and magnesium content, (6) lakes of low water colour, and (7) lakes with pH below 6.6: it was absent from lakes with pH below 5.2. For many environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere. P. fungosa, P. casmiana, and P. emarginata are all rare in Norway. The total numbers of known localities, with our records in (), are 18 (11), 7 (7), and 7 (5), respectively. These sites are all from lowland areas up to 133 m above sea level. Environmental variables in the habitats are described. P. fungosa was represented by a single floatoblast in each of the four northernmost lakes where it was recorded. One of these lakes was in North Norway some 1000 km away from the nearest known sites with living colonies. The presence of large colonies of P. fungosa in some parts of southern Norway and only `single floatoblast lakes' further north is discussed in relation to the equilibrium theory of island biogeography: birds facilitate immigration by carrying floatoblasts and environmental conditions prevent their germination and the development of living colonies. All records of P. casmiana and P. emarginata were from South Norway. Results for P. fruticosa have been published previously. Notes are given on an old and now missing sample from ca. 1900, identified by Lacourt (1968) as Hyalinella punctata – the only record of this species from Norway.  相似文献

The distribution of Loxodes magnus and L. striatus (Karyorelictida) was investigated in two eutrophic waters (Esthwaite Water and Priest Pot, English Lake District). In the benthos, these species were most abundant at the sediment surface, at deeper sites, and when the bottom water was oxygenated. In the plankton, in Priest Pot, they were found only in the oxygen deficient summer hypolimnion. Experimental studies suggested that L. magnus and L. striatus required access to oxygen. Loxodes was apparently excluded from the oxygenated Priest Pot epilimnion by several adverse factors, one of which was bright light. It was concluded that the ecology of L. magnus and L. striatus resembles, in many ways, that of the advanced ciliates which were found associated with Loxodes.  相似文献

The distribution ofCystopteris fragilis andC. dickieana in Afghanistan within the Flora Iranica region is studied. The latter species, for some ecological reason, occurs more frequently at higher altitudes. In both taxa higher polyploid levels also occur at high altitudes. The phenomenon can be correlated with the boreal-arctic distribution pattern. Polyploidism and spore-size classes are briefly mentioned as well as possible ecological adaptations. Evolutionary differentiation within both taxa are complex and still unknown.Dedicated to Univ.-Prof. DrK. H. Rechinger on the occasion of his 80th birthday and in recalling historical trips to the marvellous Afghan flora and vegetation.  相似文献

The genus Adeonella Busk (1884) comprises 41 species, 15 of which are considered to be new to science. Adeonella lichenoides (Lamarck) is regarded as the senior synonym of A. platalea (Busk) (= A. polymorpha Busk), the type species of the genus. Adeonella is distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific realm, the Mediterranean, and the South Atlantic Ocean. Its highest diversity is found off the east coasts of southern Africa. Thirty-one species (15 new to science) are described and illustrated, morphology and geographical distribution are discussed and a key is provided to all recognized species.  相似文献

In southwest Sweden, the two species of loon, Gavia stellata and G. arctica, have shown different trends in population size and production of young during the last decades. Both species fish in oligotrophic freshwaters, susceptible to acidification. The number of breeding sites occupied by G. stellata has been reduced by almost 50% during the last 40–50 years. For G. arctica, there are no indications of significant declines in population size or reproductive success during the last 20 years. The different trends in numbers and production of young might reflect different susceptibility to the ecological changes in acidified lakes. G. stellata prefer fishing lakes with high abundance of Acerina cernua and salmonid and cyprinid fish, such as Coregonus albula and Rutilus rutilus. They also feed their prefledged chicks almost entirely on cyprinid and salmonid fish. G. arctica prefer fishing lakes with high transparency and, when feeding in groups, high abundance of Perca fluviatilis. Their young can be fed on aquatic insects as a supplement to the fish diet. Thus, G. stellata to a higher degree than G. arctica relies on fish which are susceptible to low pH, and G. arctica may also benefit from the increased abundance of aquatic insects in lakes with reduced predation from fish. Furthermore, high water transparency is important for the selection of lakes by G. arctica but not by G. stellata. In G. stellata, high contents of mercury in eggs can be related to the intake of fish in lakes affected by acidification.  相似文献

The genus Branchinella is diverse in Western Australia, with 18 species, including four new species described here. B. complexidigitata n. sp. is characterized by an intricate frontal appendage, unlike any within the genus. The other three are less remarkable; B. halsei n. sp. is like B. lyrifera, B. kadjikadji n. sp. belongs to the B. affinis group and B. nana n. sp. is similar to B. simplex; similarities are based on frontal appendage and to a lesser extent on the second antennae and penis. Only two species, B. affinis and B. longirostris, are common and widespread; many of the remainder being localized endemics. The high diversity in Western Australia is explained by broad latitudinal range, habitat diversity, and great age and isolation of the landscape.  相似文献

A very particular form of Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia), adapted to life in epicontinental hyperhaline waters of Mediterranean arid regions had long been confused with Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) dolichocephala Sars, 1895. In this paper the morphological and ecological differences between the two taxa are pointed out and comparison is made with another closely related Rumanian form (Daphnia cf. mediterranea) and with the related Spanish species (D. atkinsoni and D. chevreuxi). The Daphnia of saline environments is described here as Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) mediterranea. The most important differential characters of this new species are: 1) the short and widely rounded rostrum; 2) dorsal ridge of the female extends to the anteriormost part of the head; 3) elliptical ephippium with a ride anterior margin; convex shape and separate from the dorsal ridge; 4) males possessing a very long antennule base that reaches the distal limit of the head.  相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive ecology of a population of Sceloporus undulatus erythrocheilus near Walsenburg, CO during the summers of 1987–1990. Reproductive activity commences soon after emergence in early May and continues until the middle of July. Females mature in their second year following hatching at an age of 20–21 months and a size of 60–63 mm snout-vent length (SVL). Two clutches, averaging10.9 eggs, are produced per year. Larger females produce larger clutches with an increase of one egg per 3 mm SVL. Average SVL of females was 71 mm. Eggs are reasonably large (0.32 g) and relative clutch mass was the largest reported for the species (34% of body mass). A principal component analysis was used to examine relationships among reproductive characters in 12 populations of Sceloporus undulatus. The analysis suggested that patterns of reproduction in this wide-ranging species result from several factors reflecting both adaptive and phylogenetic sources of variation.  相似文献

Palp morphology in two species of Prionospio (Polychaeta: Spionidae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The palp morphology of Prionospio fallax Söderström, 1920 from Sweden and Prionospio cf. saldanha Day, 1961 from Thailand was examined with a scanning electron microscope. Prionospio fallax was also studied in vivo using light-microscopy. Both species have grooved feeding palps, adorned with up to five ciliary characters: frontal cilia, transverse ciliary bands (or bandlets), latero-frontal cirri, lateral cilia and randomly distributed non-motile cirri. All, except the frontal cilia and non-motile cirri, are asymmetrically arranged relative to the long axis of the palps. Prionospio fallax possesses transverse bandlets and the other four groups, while P. cf. saldanha has transverse bands (consisting of several contiguous bandlets), frontal cilia and some randomly scattered cirri. Asymmetrical palp ciliation was previously only known in Marenzelleria viridis (Verril, 1873) and the genus Scolelepis Blainville, 1828. The newly recognised transverse ciliary bands and bandlets are considered to be homologous with the transverse ciliary rows found basally on the palps of Paraprionospio pinnata (Ehlers, 1901). This multistate character (named transverse cilia) may prove useful in elucidating the phylogeny of the Prionospio-complex of genera.  相似文献

We investigated the winter feeding ecology of cod ( Gadus morhua ) in the Risørfjord and Flødevigen areas on the Skagerrak coast, southern Norway. Diets from the ice-covered Risørfjord were compared with diets from the more coastal Flødevigen area. In the Risørfjord area the diet featured numerically both decapods (56.0%) and fish (27.8%), but fish dominated by mass (75.1%). The most numerous dietary items from the Flødevigen area were decapods (48.1%) and isopods (30.6%), although fish still made up the bulk of the diet's mass (52.6%). Diets at Flødevigen shifted from winter to spring, as polychaetes became important numerically (67.8%) and also contributed substantially by weight (53.6%). Since cod feed opportunistically, differences between areas and seasons probably reflected differences in prey diversity and abundance. Prey size variability increased with increasing predator length, but maximum prey size relative to predator length was constant at about 9%. Prey fish increased in both length and numbers with the length of cod, particularly in the Risørfjord area, where fish were more important in the diet than at Flødevigen. However, the majority of fish consumed in both areas were small gobiids. Based on growth patterns observed in otoliths, with opaque zones (indicating faster growth) formed during winter, the quality and quantity of the winter diet may determine annual growth rates of cod on the Skagerrak coast. Fish and decapods constituted important, high energy food sources, and there was little indication that cod were food limited during winter in this area.  相似文献

A material consisting of 49 taxa of Lecane (Rotifera), from diverse waters in south and Central Sweden, was analyzed to reveal their relationships to substrate and habitat. Most species did not show any pronounced preference for any substrate, occurring in several diverse substrates, and especially in periphytic environments. Only a few species seemed to specialize in bog substrates. Some taxa were found, sometimes at a high frequency, on an artificial substrate, white cotton, indicating a high degree of mobility.  相似文献

Two new species of chironomid midges (Rheosmittia arcuata n.sp. and Mesocricotopus loticus n.sp.) are recognized. They may easily be missed in collections due to their small size, and difficulty in collecting from the larval microhabitat (sand substrates for R. arcuata n.sp., low order streams with depositional substrates including gravel, sand, and silt for M. loticus n.sp.). Some morphological features are given to distinguish the new species from similar congeneric forms. The distribution and some ecological information for each species are also briefly discussed.  相似文献
