The fitness effects due to initial flowering date in Phlox drummondii were determined for three populations in central Texas (USA) over 3 yr (1990-1992). Mean fitness (seed set) always decreased with the later initiation of flowering. The likelihood of a plant fruiting differed with flowering date in five of the six instances (population by year combinations). Though plants that initiated flowering later tended to have spent more time in the vegetative stage and tended to die later in the year than did earlier flowering plants, this was not sufficient to overcome the reproductive penalties of flowering late. Plants that initiated flowering later in the season spent less time in the adult phase and were smaller. The mean number of flowers, fruits, and seeds per flowering plant always decreased with later flowering. Fruit set was negatively correlated with flowering date in four of the six population by year combinations. Nonparametric fitness functions were used to summarize predicted fitness among different initial flowering dates for each population on a yearly basis. Predicted mean fitness always declined nonlinearly with later flowering; the earliest flowering plants always had the highest predicted fitness. These fitness functions describe directional selection for the early initiation of flowering.  相似文献

Cross-compatibility within and among populations of the perennialEriastrum densifolium was investigated to determine if sterility barriers have evolved within this polytypic species, and to correlate any such barriers to previously known patterns of genetic and morphological variation. Furthermore, the reproductive affinities of the endangeredE. densifolium subsp.sanctorum are investigated. Results indicate that no single population or group of populations is reproductively isolated from all other populations, and that F1 hybrids are fully fertile. Interspecific crosses (withE. eremicum andE. sapphirinum) were largely unsuccessful. The endangeredE. densifolium subsp.sanctorum demonstrates high interfertility with all other populations.  相似文献

Natural F1 hybrids between the outcrossingPhlox drummondii and the predominantly selfingP. cuspidata were examined to ascertain the proportion of hybrid individuals mothered by each species. Species-specific restriction fragment patterns (both nrDNA and cpDNA) were established as markers, and synthetic hybrids of known parentage were utilized to determine that the chloroplast genome is maternally inherited. Of 89 mature natural hybrids examined, approximately two thirds were mothered byP. drummondii, the outcrosser. That the outcrosser should mother most hybrids is expected since it is dependent upon incoming pollen for fertilization, and hybrids may result when heterospecific pollen is received. The fact that the highly selfingP. cuspidata mothered nearly one third of the hybrids is surprising, and may be related to both pre-zygotic and post-zygotic factors. Which species mothers hybrids has important implications for the potential for introgression as well as its direction.  相似文献

Two different mechanisms can result in multiple paternity within fruits: deposition of a mixed pollen load due to carryover of pollen from flower to flower and multiple pollinator visits in close succession. I investigated the extent of multiple paternity within fruits of Ipompsis aggregata containing from 2 to 14 seeds. A paternity analysis based on ten polymorphic isozyme markers revealed multiple paternity in a minimum of 68% (based on simple paternity exclusion) and up to 100% (based on identification of the most likely father) of the multiseeded fruits. The estimated number of fathers increased with the number of seeds in a fruit, with an average of four sires, and up to nine sires, represented in a single fruit. To explore whether this level of multiple paternity could be explained solely by simultaneous deposition of a mixed pollen load, I constructed a computer simulation model based on previous measurements of movement patterns and pollen carryover by the hummingbird pollinators. Model predictions provided a good match to observed values for number of sires per fruit. Thus, the extensive pollen carryover in this species and consequent mixed pollen loads can explain the high levels of multiple paternity in natural populations.  相似文献

Clones from two populations of Phlox drummondii were grown in three different nutrient environments to determine the extent to which the overall level and pattern of correlation among traits within an environment changes across environments. With one exception, the level of phenotypic correlation in both populations was the same across environments. Plants from Lexington, Texas exhibited a significantly lower level of phenotypic correlation when grown at a high nutrient concentration. The two populations did not differ from one another in their levels of phenotypic correlation when compared within environments. The pattern of correlation was homogenous both within populations across environments and among populations within environments. Tests of a priori hypotheses regarding the associations among functionally or developmentally related traits suggest that the correlations among traits are higher in traits that share a common function or developmental origin. We also compared the level and pattern of plasticity correlations among populations for three different components of the plastic response. We found that the level and pattern of plastic correlation for the average, linear, and nonlinear components of the plastic response did not differ among the two populations. With only one exception, the relationships among the plastic responses of different traits fit our model of functional and developmental integration. The results from our analyses of phenotypic and plastic correlations support the hypothesis that plastic correlations determine the extent to which phenotypic correlations are environment-dependent.  相似文献

In order to estimate pollen tube attrition and to relate it to the breeding system, numbers of microgametophytes within the stigma and at the bottom of the style were scored in species of theBrassicaceae, 17 sporophytically self-incompatible, 11 predominant inbreeders, 4 facultative outcrossers. Attrition was evident in almost all species. The mean number of tubes at the bottom of the style, and mean number of stylar tubes per ovule were significantly lower in outbreeders. The degree of attrition, measured as attrition rate (the proportion of tubes in the stigma that do not reach the bottom of the style) was higher in outbreeders; it was positively correlated with the pollen : ovule ratios as estimates of the degree of outbreeding in the species involved. In outbreeders, sexual selection seems to be rather effective in inhibiting certain microgametophytic genotypes from reaching the ovules. Because of the low number of tubes per ovule in most cases, we assume that, in theBrassicaceae, female choice may be more effective in sexual selection and in ensuing pollen tube attrition.  相似文献

Addition of MnSO4 or MnCl2 to a fine sandy soil from South Australia had a negative effect on shoot growth and root elongation ofSolanum opacum in the absence of significant presence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM). VAM ameliorated the reduction of plant growth by Mn, even though mycorrhizal development was decreased. Mn inhibited infection of roots by a fine endophyte less than that by some coarse endophytes. High concentrations of available Mn inhibited growth of hyphae of VAM fungi from dried root pieces, a significant source of infection by mycorrhizal fungi in the soil used.  相似文献

Scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy were used to clarify some aspects of the floral morphology ofApocynum cannabinum. Insects are required for pollination, since the floral morphology prevents autogamy and minimizes intrafloral self-pollination. Flowers hand-pollinated with self-pollen never set fruit, but 10.6% of cross-pollinations produced fruit. Self-pollen did germinate, however, and produced abundant tubes that grew through the pistil and entered the ovule micropyles. The proportion of ovules penetrated by self- and outcross-pollen tubes was not statistically significantly different. These results suggest thatA. cannabium possesses late-acting self-incompatibility, similar to that in the closely related Asclepiadaceae.  相似文献

Pollen exine morphology of nine of the ten species of Cantua (Polemoniaceae) is examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. A total of 28 specimens of C. bicolor, C. buxifolia, C. candelilla, C. cuzcoensis, C. flexuosa, C. pyrifolia, C. quercifolia, C. volcanica, and an as yet undescribed species (Cantua sp. nov.) are examined using either fresh or herbarium material. Pollen grains are found to be spheroidal, pantoporate, and quite large; mean diameter varies from 62 to 87?μm. Mean number of pores varies from 4.5 to 21.2 and mean pore size varies from 4.86 to 12.40?μm. Pollen grains of all species have insulate semitectate sexines. This feature distinguishes the pollen of Cantua species from the remainder of the Polemoniaceae. Insulae are evenly distributed over the surface of the pollen grain, with the exception of C. flexuosa and occasionally C. buxifolia, where insulae are more sparsely and haphazardly distributed. The majority of the species examined have irregularly shaped tectal insulae, with the exception of the large rounded insulae in C. quercifolia and the elongated narrow insulae in C. volcanica. Cantua quercifolia and C. volcanica have supratectal verrucae, a possible synapomorphy. In comparison to close relatives, the pollen grains of Cantua are evolutionarily conserved, and show little variation among species.  相似文献

Notes are provided on the association of the beetleDiphucephala affinis (Scarabaeidae) with yellow flowers ofHibbertia hypericoides, H. huegelii (Dilleniaceae),Acacia pulchella, andA. stenoptera (Mimosaceae). Observations were undertaken during September 9–19, 1979 at S. Perth, Western Australia. Distyly inLinum tenuifolium L. is associated with a high degree of self-incompatibility. Breakdown in this system has occurred without the morphological rearrangement expected as the result of cross-over within the distyly supergene. Pollen-flow in both distylous and monomorphic populations is leptokurtic. A high proportion of intra-flower pollination occurs. Pollen production per ovule is reduced in the self-compatible race. Mean seed-set is increased. Individuals of the self-compatible race produce less vegetative growth and require a shorter time to reach reproductive maturity under cultivation. Increased fecundity appears to provide the selective advantage promoting the breakdown of self-incompatibility in this species. This is achieved through a massive shift of resources toward female reproductive function in plants of the monomorphic race. Subsequent colonization by this race has led to its increased distribution in C. & S. Europe.  相似文献

In order to study diversification and microevolution in Phlox, we developed nine polymorphic microsatellite loci. In 20 individuals of Phlox pilosa from a single population, the average number of alleles per locus was 10.0 ± 5.1, and average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.611 ± 0.234 and 0.769 ± 0.170, respectively. Most of these markers amplified successfully in 11 additional species of Phlox, representing a broad diversity of the genus, and some also amplified in more distantly related members of the Polemoniaceae. These microsatellite markers will be valuable for investigation of evolutionary processes in this important study system.  相似文献

Opuntia brunneogemmia andO. viridirubra occur sympatrically in the Serra do Sudeste, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Their flowers have 450–600 thigmonastic stamens and provide large amounts of pollen and nectar for bees. Bees of 41 species were registered at the flowers ofO. brunneogemmia and 30 at the flowers ofO. viridirubra. Females of three oligolectic species are the only effective pollinators:Ptilothrix fructifera (Anthophoridae),Lithurgus rufiventris (Megachilidae), andCephalocolletes rugata (Colletidae). During their visits inOpuntia-flowers, bees touch the filaments and stimulate the movement of the stamens to the centre of the flower. At the end of this movement, the anthers are densely packed around the style. As a consequence the pollen is presented in an easily accessible upper layer of anthers and various, nearly inaccessible lower layers. The lower layers contain about 80% of the pollen reward. Only females of the three oligolectic pollinators exploit the pollen from the lower layers and reach the nectar furrow. Therefore, through their stamen movements,Opuntia flowers hide most of their pollen from flower visitors but favour effectively pollinating, oligolectic bees.  相似文献

Comparative studies on male and female meiosis in diploid (2n = 2x = 14) and colchitetraploid (2N = 4x = 28) ornamental Phlox drummondii reveal higher chiasma frequency in embryo-sac mother cells as compared with pollen mother cells in the diploid, and significant differences in the pairing properties of chromosomes in the pollen mother cells and embryo-sac mother cells of the colchitetraploid. Male meiosis in the colchicine-induced autotetraploid was abnormal with 51.70% of chromosomes associated in quadrivalents and tridents in 96% of the cells. This was followed by discordant anaphase I disjunction. In the female meiocytes the chromosomes formed 14 bivalents in 86.66% of the cells. Quadrivalents (1–3) appeared only in 13.34% of the cells. It is concluded that meiosis in male and female cells of the colchitetraploid is governed and regulated by different controlling systems of gene(s).  相似文献

Summary A structural study of pollination in the dimorphic flowers ofCollomia grandiflora, a cleistogamous species, reveals significant differences in stigma behavior during pollination, stylar structure, the timing of generative cell division, and pollen tube growth rate patterns. The cleistogamous flower shows a loss of protandry and the stigma is receptive only after reflexing and closing of its lobes. In contrast, the chasmogamous stigma is receptive when reflexed and closes when pollen has been deposited on the lobes. Pollen tube penetration of the dry stigma papillae and entry into the style is similar in the two morphs. The chasmogamous style is solid and the cleistogamous style partly hollow. The matrix of secretion produced by the transmitting tract cells is mainly carbohydrate with a trace of lipids. It is fibrillar in nature and appears to be partly comprised of wall material from the transmitting tract cells. In the chasmogamous pollen, the generative cell enters the tube before division, which occurs between 30 and 60 min after pollination. This division correlates with an increased growth rate for the pollen tube. In the cleistogamous pollen, contact with the stigma triggers generative cell division inside the hydrated pollen grain before germination. The two resulting sperm cells exit the grain 15–30 min after pollination when the pollen tube is in the stigma lobes. Floral scents emitted from different flower parts ofRanunculus acris were investigated by trapping headspace volatiles onto Porapak Q followed by solvent desorption and GC-MS analysis. Isoprenoids, strongly dominated bytrans--ocimene, constituted the principal class of volatiles in all flower parts except pollen; sesquiterpenes were especially diverse. Odors collected separately from petals, stamens, and sepals + gynoecium comprised the same volatiles, but these were present in disparate proportions among the flower parts, thereby creating subtle contrasts within the flower. The main sources of volatiles were the petals and stamens, which made equal contributions to the whole-flower fragrance. Emissions from the petals differed quantitatively between the apical and basal petal regions, thereby paralleling optical nectar-guide patterns. Pollen odor was markedly unlike that of other flower parts, with only few volatiles, a high representation of 5-methylene-2(5H)-furanone (protoanemonin), and no detectabletrans--ocimene. The distinctiveness of the pollen's volatile profile suggests that it may serve a signalling role to pollen-feeding insects.  相似文献

以6年生薄壳山核桃优良品种‘金华’的新鲜花粉为试材,采用离体培养法,研究了不同复水时间、不同培养基组分、不同培养温度及培养时间对薄壳山核桃花粉萌发和花粉管生长的影响。结果显示:(1)薄壳山核桃花粉萌发试验前进行4h复水处理可显著提高萌发率,萌发率可达51.78%,为对照(2.51%)的20.68倍。(2)蔗糖、H3BO3、Ca(NO3)2·4H2O在一定浓度范围内均具有促进花粉萌发和花粉管生长的作用,但浓度过高则起抑制作用。(3)正交试验结果经实验验证表明,薄壳山核桃花粉萌发和花粉管生长的最适培养基为20%蔗糖+0.02%~0.03%H3BO3+0.05%Ca(NO3)2·4H2O,最佳培养条件为25℃下恒温培养24h,此时的花粉萌发率高达74.46%,花粉管平均长度为258.84μm。  相似文献

Pollen grain polarity, aperture condition and pollen tube formation were examined inEphedra americana, E. foliata, E. rupestris, E. distachya, andE. fragilis using LM, SEM and TEM. In the characteristic oblate pollen, as seen in situ in the tetrad configuration, the polar axis is the minor one and the equatorial plane runs between the two narrow ends of the microspore. The intine is thick in fresh fixed mature pollen but we have seen no indication of regions having an exceptionally thick intine that could be considered associated with an aperture or apertures. About three minutes after transferring fresh pollen to the germinating medium the ridged exine splits and twists away from the intine and its enclosed protoplast. The shed exine spreads out and curls into a scroll-like configuration that is as distinctive as that of the pollen shape had been but now having the ridges and valleys perpendicular to the long axis. The pollen tube develops, in our experience with more than a hundred germinating pollen grains, near one of the narrow tips of the pollen grain's equatorial plane. The location of the pollen tube initiation probably is related to the position of the tube cell nucleus. The pollen tube starts to grow about one hour after the exine was shed. The pollen tube emerges close to the narrow end (equator) of the gametophyte. This end emerged first as the exine is shed and is opposite to the prothallial cells. The stout pollen tube is c. 10µm in diameter grown in vitro on agar. In our germination medium the stout tube continued to elongate for about 24 hours reaching a length of c. 100 µm. With respect to exine morphology the aperture condition could be considered as inaperturate. The pollen tube, however, is formed in a germination area near one end of the exineless gametophyte.  相似文献
