Aims

The study aimed to find soil parameters that are best related to Se plant uptake for low Se soils with predominantly organic Se, and to explore the mechanisms that control Se bioavailability in the soils under study.

Methods

A pot experiment using nineteen soil samples taken from different fields of arable land (potato fields) in the Netherlands was conducted on summer wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Selenium in wheat shoots and soil parameters, including basic soil properties, C:N ratio, inorganic selenite content, and Se and organic C in different soil extractions (0.01 M CaCl2, 0.43 M HNO3, hot water, ammonium oxalate, aqua regia) were analysed. Regression analysis was performed to identify soil parameters that determine Se content in wheat shoots.

Results

The regression model shows that Se:DOC ratio in 0.01 M CaCl2 soil extraction explained about 88 % of the variability of Se uptake in wheat shoots. Selenium uptake increased with Se:DOC ratio in CaCl2 extraction, which can be interpreted as a measure of the content of soluble Se-rich organic molecules. Selenium:DOC ratio in CaCl2 extraction and Se uptake increased towards higher soil pH and lower soil C:N ratio. The soil C:N ratio is also negatively correlated to Se:organic C ratio in other extractions (0.43 M HNO3, hot water, ammonium oxalate, aqua regia), indicating that at low soil C:N ratio soil organic matter is richer in Se. Contrarily, the soil pH is positively and strongly correlated to Se:organic C ratio in CaCl2 and hot water extractions, but only weakly correlated to Se:organic C ratio in other extractions.

Conclusions

Selenium-rich dissolved organic matter is the source of bioavailable Se in low Se soils with predominantly organic Se. The soil pH and quality of soil organic matter (i.e. soil C:N ratio) are the main soil properties determining Se bioavailability in these soil types.

The objective of this study was to estimate the water repellency of post-boggy soils in north-eastern Poland. Potential water repellency was determined based on the water drop penetration time (WDPT) test and the molarity of an ethanol droplet (MED) test. A total of 276 soil samples with a varied organic carbon (OC) content, ranging from trace amounts in sandy subsoils to 44.4% in organic soils, were analyzed. The investigated material represents peat-muck soils (Eutri-Sapric Histsols) and muck-like soils (Arenic Gleysols, Areni-Humic Gleysols, Gleyic Arenosols). The mineral matter of the analyzed soils comprised loose sand. The obtained results indicate that peat soil formations are marked by higher potential water repellency than muck soil formations. The highest WDPT values (16 390 s) were reported in respect of an alder peat sample with 41.9% OC content, collected at a depth of 55–60 cm. In the group of muck soils, a sample with 36.7% OC content, collected at a depth of 15–20 cm, was marked by the highest water repellency (WDPT 10 492 s). The water repellency of the studied soils is dependent on organic matter content, and it is manifested only when organic matter content is higher than 20%. Soils with OC content of up to 12% show low water repellency or are hydrophilic. Organic soil formations (>12% OC) are characterized by a varied degree of water repellency, but WDPT values in excess of 2000 s are reported only in respect of soils containing more than 35% OC. A significant positive correlation between the content of organic matter, organic carbon, total nitrogen and water repellency was observed in the entire studied population (n = 276). A significant positive correlation was also found between WDPT values and the C:N ratio, while a significant negative correlation was reported in respect of .  相似文献

The organic matter contents of thirty-six soils were measured annually for twenty years in a pot experiment. The soils originated mainly from arable land and varied in initial organic matter content, texture and pH. The soils were stored at an average air temperature of around 13 °C and every year each soil was mixed thoroughly. Throughout the experiment, soil moisture was kept between 50-70% of its water holding capacity. No organic matter was added during the experiment, so that gross soil organic matter decomposition could be assessed. Relative decomposition rates of soil organic matter decreased as time proceeded. Despite the wide range of soils studied, it was found that during the initial decades, the pattern of soil organic matter degradation was strongly correlated with the organic matter content of the soils at the start of the experiment. This means that during this period the time course of the organic matter content of the soils in our experiment can be estimated from the initial soil organic matter content alone.  相似文献

Urbanization and agriculture cause alterations in soil biodiversity. As arthropods quickly respond to soil changes, they have been recognized as good indicators of soil quality. This study aimed to evaluate if (1) soil physico-chemical properties act as environmental filters of the functional trait distribution of soil arthropod community; (2) the abundance of certain functional traits is linked to different land uses; (3) the taxonomical and functional approaches provide complementary information about the evaluation of biological soil quality. The study was performed at forest, agricultural and urban sites in downtown and surroundings of Naples. The soils were characterized for texture, pH, organic matter content, water content, total Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations. The forest soils showed the highest organic matter and water contents, and the lowest metal concentrations; the agricultural soils showed the lowest organic matter and water contents and high Cd and Cu concentrations, whereas the urban soils showed high Pb and Zn concentrations. The forest soils showed the highest arthropod density, taxa richness and diversity. The distribution of the functional traits in the arthropod communities of the different land uses highlighted similarity only for the preference to occupy soil and for the percentage contribution of detritivores. The abundance of arthropods living above litter and omnivores were positively correlated to Pb and Zn concentrations, whereas predators were positively correlated to Cu concentrations. The findings suggest that the arthropod identification at order level could be enough to detect differences in functional traits among forest, urban, and agricultural soils.  相似文献

Column experiments of copper extraction from four contaminated soils characterized by a content of Soil Organic Matter (SOM) ranging from 1% to 25% are presented and discussed. The extraction was performed by flushing the soil with an aqueous solution of a sodium salt of ethylene diamminotetraacetic acid (EDTA). Preliminary tests were performed on a soil containing 25% of organic matter, to investigate the influence of pH, concentration and volumes of EDTA on its chelant action and on the dissolution of SOM. Having selected the optimal conditions for the extraction process, a further series of tests was conducted on the four soils to evaluate the influence of organic content on copper extraction yields. EDTA solutions at 0.01 M, 0.05 M, 0.1 and 0.2 M were injected at 0.33 ml/s; copper and organic matter extraction yield were determined. At a pH of 5, 15 pore volume (PV) of a solution containing 0.05M EDTA, extracted about 99% of copper contained by the soil with the higher organic matter content. Under the same conditions, and for soil with > 6% SOM, extraction yields over 80% were achieved, while at lower organic content, copper extraction was dramatically reduced. This was attributed to the formation of highly stable copper-humate complexes and to their increasingly dissolution that occurred in the soils with higher organic matter level.

Experimental tests performed at different contamination levels (1200 mg/kg, 2400 mg/kg) showed that EDTA extraction effectiveness also depended upon initial soil Cu concentration.  相似文献

Summary The effect of level of CaCO3, inoculation and lime pelleting on the nodulation, dry matter yield and % N content of common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) grown in five acid soils was investigated in a greenhouse study. The soils represented a range in pH from 3.9 to 5.1, in exchangeable Al from 0.0 to 4 meq/100 gm, in exchangeable Mn from 0.35 to 2.32 me/100 gm, and in %C from 0.69 to 5.60.Nodule weight decreased with increasing %C and for the soil with highest %C (5.60) no nodules were observed. In soils with low organic matter and low exchangeable Al and Mn, inoculation increased nodule weight, dry matter yield and %N especially at the lowest pH level. Where the seeds were not inoculated, nodule weight and dry matter yield increased with soil pH. No such increases were observed where the seeds were inoculated. There was no apparent advantage in lime pelleting in such soils. In soils with low organic matter content and with substantial amounts of Al and/or Mn, liming increased nodule weight and dry matter yield, and decreased exchangeable Al and/or Mn. Lime pelleting was superior to mere inoculation in increasing nodule weight particularly at low lime rates. In soils with relatively high organic matter content, nodulation was very low or none at all. Low lime rates had little effect on exchangeable Al and Ca and dry matter yield. Higher lime rates, however, decreased exchangeable Al and dry matter yield but increased exchangeable Ca.  相似文献

Summary Transformation of iron and manganese under three different moisture regimes, viz continuous waterlogged (W1), continuous saturated (W2) and alternate waterlogged and saturated (W3) and three levels of organic matterviz 0, 0.5 and 1.0% in all possible combinations was studied in four soils. The results showed that under waterlogged moisture regime there was a sharp increase in the content of water soluble plus exchangeable manganese accompanied by significant decrease in the content of reducible manganese in all the soils excepting the acidic soil which was very poor in active manganese content. The increase in respect of iron in similar form was, however, very small. The increase in the content of water soluble plus exchangeable manganese as well as iron under the continuous saturated and alternate waterlogged and saturated moisture regimes was always much lower as compared to that under the continuous waterlogged condition. Application of organic matter brought about an increase in the content of water soluble plus exchangeable manganese in all the soils excepting the lateritic one irrespective of moisture regimes but did not cause any change in the content of iron and manganese in insoluble complex. The content of water soluble plus exchangeable iron and of insoluble ferrous iron although recorded some increase due to organic matter application, the increase was not so marked in any of the soils.  相似文献

Precipitation of Ca phosphates negatively affects recovery by plants of P fertilizer applied to calcareous soils, but organic matter slows the precipitation of poorly soluble Ca phosphates. To study the effect of high molecular weight organic compounds on the recovery of applied P, a mixture of humic and fulvic acids was applied to calcareous soils with different levels of salinity and Na saturation which were fertilized with 200 and 2000 mg P kg–1 as NH4H2PO4. Recovery was measured as the ratio of increment in Olsen P-to-applied P after 30, 60 and 150 days, and associated P forms were studied using sequential chemical fractionation and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Application of the humic-fulvic acid mixture (HFA) increased the amount of applied P recovered as Olsen P in all the soils except in one soil with the highest Na saturation. In soils with high Ca saturation and high Olsen P, recovery increased from < 15% in the absence of amendment to > 40% at a 5 g HFA kg–1 amendment rate (30 days incubation and 200 mg P kg–1 fertilizer rate). This is ascribed to inhibition of the precipitation of poorly soluble Ca phosphates, consistent with the sequential chemical extraction (reduction of the HCl extractable P) and P concentration in 0.01 M CaCl2 (1:10 soil:solution ratio) extracts. 31P NMR spectra revealed that in non-amended samples, most spectral shifts were due to poorly soluble P compounds (carbonate apatite); on the other hand, at the 5 g HFA kg–1 rate, significant amounts of amorphous Ca phosphate and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCDP) were identified. The increase in the recovery of applied P due to HFA reveals a positive effect of the application of organic matter as soil amendments on the efficiency of P fertilizers and also explains that manures and other organic sources of P were more efficient increasing available P than inorganic P fertilizers in calcareous soils.  相似文献

Napthalene- and decane-contaminated soils were treated with Triton X-100 (a nonionic surfactant) to characterize the soil-water partitioning behavior of the surfactant in soils with different organic content. Soil samples with different organic content were prepared by mixing sand-mulch mixtures at different proportions. The experimental results indicated that the amount of surfactant sorbed onto soil increased with increasing soil organic content and increasing surfactant concentration. The effective critical micelle concentration (CMC) also increased with increasing organic content in soil. The CMC of Triton X-100 in aqueous systems without soil was about 0.3 mM and the effective CMC values measured for soil-water-surfactant systems (approximately 1:19 soil/water ratio) with 25%, 50%, and 75% mulch content were 0.9, 1.0, and 1.7 mM, respectively. Sub-CMC surfactant sorption was modeled accurately with both the Freundlich and the linear isotherm. The maximum surfactant sorption onto soil varied from 66% to 82% of added surfactant in the absence of contaminant. The effective CMC values for Triton X-100 increased to some extent in the presence of contaminants, as did the maximum surfactant sorption. The maximum surfactant sorbed onto the soil with 75% mulch content increased from 82% for clean soils, to 95% and 96% for soils samples contaminated with naphthalene and decane, respectively.  相似文献

Morphological and chemical changes exhibited by different types of soils heated to different final temperatures are reported. Beds of soils were heated (in a helium atmosphere) from ~20°C to final temperatures, ranging from between 200 to 900°C, simulating ex situ thermal treatments in a nonoxidizing media. Structural changes exhibited by the soil samples during the treatments were analyzed by SEM, measurement of surface area, and measurement of particle porosity. The soil chemical transformations were quantified by means of soil weight loss, light gases yields, and carbon conversion. Soils with low organic matter content do not undergo important structural and chemical changes during the thermal treatment. On the other hand, soils with high organic carbon content suffer significant chemical modifications and, as a consequence, noticeable structural transformations. Indeed, for thermal treatments of about 900°C, weight losses as high as 22?wt%, final surface area of one order of magnitude higher than its original value (untreated soil), and changes of porosity as high as 27% were found for soils of high organic matter content. Simple mathematical equations are proposed to predict the soil weight loss and particle porosity as a function of the treatment temperature. The models provide a good fit to the experimental data.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to study the conditions favourable to Cr (III) oxidation such as: type of soil, soil water content, presence of organic matter and three oxidisers (MnO2, NaNO3 and Fe2O3). Also concentrations of different species of chromium in water and soils were examined in the area contaminated with tannery wastes containing 5-10% of Cr2O3. The action of oxidisers was studied in batch experiment for 2 h at room temperature at pH=5.35+/-0.2. The highest level of oxidised trivalent chromium was registered for soil with the lowest content of organic matter (0.72% C(org)), when Cr (III) was oxidised by MnO2, Fe2O3 and NaNO3 did not show properties towards Cr (III) oxidation under the conditions described.  相似文献

Soil samples from surface and sub-surface horizons in the well-drained and poorly-drained members of three soil catenas were incubated under submergence or at field capacity to study the effects of these incubation conditions and prior natural drainage on the solubility of four plant micro-nutrients. Iron, Mn, Zn and Cu were extracted by water using a 11 water:soil ratio. The four micronutrient metals were also extracted by DTPA solutions buffered at either pH 5.3 or pH 7.3 to compare the effectiveness of these two extractants under these incubation conditions with acid soils. Generally the extractability of the nutrients was much affected by the horizon (A, E or B) with A horizons having the greatest amounts of all nutrients and undergoing greater changes in water- and DTPA-extractability during incubation. Soil drainage class (wellvs. poorly drained) had few effects. Incubation moisture regime had major effects on water extractable Fe and Mn with lesser effects on Zn and Cu. Submerged soils generally had the greatest levels of water extractable nutrients, though rice uptake did not reflect this. DTPA at pH 5.3 extracted 2 to 3 times as much Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu as did DTPA at pH 7.3 and about 50 to 100 times as much as did water. Correlations between DTPA extractable nutrients and rice uptake were significant only for Fe and Cu and declined during incubation. The changes in all variables during incubation were complex, being related to soil properties such as organic matter content, pH and mineralogy as well as to incubation conditions.  相似文献

The Atacama desert in Chile is one of the driest and most lifeless environments on Earth. It rains possibly once a decade. NASA examined these soils as a model for the Martian environment by comparing their degradation activity with Martian soil and looking for “the dry limit of life”. The existence of heterotrophic bacteria in Atacama soil was demonstrated by DNA extraction and by the isolation of microorganisms. So far, however, no data have been available about the metabolic activities in these soils due to the limitations of the existing methodologies when applied to desert soils. Calorimetry was used to obtain information on the metabolic and thermal properties of eleven soil samples collected at different sites in the Atacama desert. Differential scanning calorimetry and isothermal calorimetry were employed to determine the pyrolysis properties of the carbon‐containing matter and to measure biomass and microbial metabolism. They were compared to other soil properties such as total carbon and nitrogen, carbon to nitrogen ratio and pH. There was measurable organic matter in nine of the eleven samples and the heat of pyrolysis of those soils was correlated to the carbon content. In five of the eleven samples no biomass could be detected and the existence of basal microbial metabolism could not be established because all samples showed endothermic activity, probably from inorganic reactions with water. Six samples showed microbial activation after the addition of glucose. Carbon content, nitrogen content and the microbial activity after glucose amendment were correlated to the altitude and to the average minimum temperature of the sampling sites calculated from meteorological data. The detectable microbial metabolism was more dissipative with increasing altitude and decreasing temperature.  相似文献

Changes in humic matter of overburden and replaced topsoils receiving four different treatment combinations of fertilizer and an organic amendment were investigated on reclaimed surface mine spoil in southeastern Montana. Nine years after revegetation, the maximum increases of organic matter and humic acid content, respectively, were 53% and 23% on overburden soils and 14% and 16% on replaced topsoils. The C:N ratio increased in the overburden soil from 11.0 to 13.5 with treatments; in the topsoil the C:N ratio changes were variable. C:N ratios of 9–11 were characteristic of humic acids, with no consistent relation to treatments. The increases in the soil organic matter, humic matter, and total soil nitrogen content were greater than the amounts of C and N added as amendments, probably because of the increased plant litter availability and retention in soil and possible nitrogen input by dinitrogen fixation.  相似文献

Agricultural application of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), as nutrient source for plants and as soil conditioner, is the most cost-effective option of MSW management because of its advantages over traditional means such as landfilling or incineration. However, agricultural application of MSW can lead to a potential environmental threat due to the presence of pathogens and toxic pollutants. Composting is an attractive alternative of MSW recycling. Application of MSW compost (MSWC) in agricultural soils can directly alter soil physico-chemical properties as well as promote plant growth. The soil microbial biomass, considered as the living part of soil organic matter, is very closely related to the soil organic matter content in many arable agricultural soils. Numerous studies, with different MSWC amendment doses on different soil types and under different water regimes revealed no detrimental effect on soil microbial biomass. In this review, we show the state of art about the effects of MSWC amendment on soil microbial biomass.

The objective of this study was the evaluation of seven forage and conservation crop species for phytoremediation of trinitrotoluene (TNT) and pyrene-contaminated soils. TNT and pyrene were added to soil at 100 mg kg-1. Crop species screening studies were conducted in a greenhouse and growth chambers on two soil types with different organic matter contents. Under high soil organic matter conditions, adsorption or covalent binding to the soil organic matter appeared to be a dominant force of removal limiting TNT and pyrene availability. In both soil types, pyrene dissipation could not be attributed to the presence of plants. However, in soils with lower organic matter content, all of the plant species treatments showed a significantly higher degree of TNT transformation compared with the unplanted control. Statistically significant differences in TNT transformation were observed among crop species grown in the low OM soil. Reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) were the most effective species in enhancing TNT transformation. Our data indicated that use of plants was effective for phytoremediation of TNT-contaminated low OM content soils, but did not have any significant effect on pyrene dissipation. Based on these observations, it appears that plant-soil-contaminant interactions are very specific, and this specificity determines the effectiveness of phytoremediation schemes.  相似文献

Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) is commonly used to measure the growth potential of microorganisms in water, but has not yet been investigated for measuring microbial growth potential in soils. In this study, a simple, rapid, and non-growth based assay to determine AOC in soil was developed using a naturally occurring luminous strain Vibrio harveyi BB721 to determine the fraction of low molecular weight organic carbon in soil water extract. Calibration of the assay was achieved by measuring the luminescence intensity of starved V. harveyi BB721 cells in the late exponential phase with a concentration range from 0 to 800 μg l(-1) glucose (equivalent to 0-16.0 mg glucose C kg(-1) soil) with the detection limit of 10 μg l(-1) equivalent to 0.20 mg glucose C kg(-1) soil. Results showed that bioluminescence was proportional to the concentration of glucose added to soil. The luminescence intensity of the cells was highly pH dependent and the optimal pH was about 7.0. The average AOC concentration in 32 soils tested was 2.9±2.2 mg glucose C kg(-1). Our data showed that AOC levels in soil water extracts were significantly correlated (P<0.05) with microbial biomass determined as microbial biomass carbon, indicating that the AOC concentrations determined by the method developed might be a good indicator of soil microbial biomass. Our findings provide a new approach that may be used to determine AOC in environmental samples using a non-growth bioluminescence based assay. Understanding the levels of AOC in soil water extract provides new insights into our ability to estimate the most available carbon pool to bacteria in soil that may be easily assimilated into cells for many metabolic processes and suggest possible the links between AOC, microbial regrowth potential, and microbial biomass in soils.  相似文献

  • 1 The relationship of the seed bank to the vegetation of a freshwater marsh was studied along gradients of water depth and soil organic matter content. Characters examined included standing crop, seedling density, and species composition, distribution and richness.
  • 2 The seed bank differed from the vegetation in that only nine of twenty-seven species were present in both, abundant seed-bank species were uncommon as adults, and adults showed different distributions along a gradient of soil organic matter content whereas their seeds were most abundant in soils with high organic matter.
  • 3 The seed bank resembled the vegetation in that separate multivariate analyses of the communities revealed that variation in the species composition of each was significantly correlated with water depth and soil organic matter content. Further, species richness in both communities decreased with water depth and increased with soil organic matter content. Lastly, the standing crop of the vegetation and the number of seedlings both decreased with water depth and increased with soil organic matter.
  • 4 Consideration of spatial patterns and environmental gradients revealed more similarities between vegetation and seed banks than were obtained by comparing species lists. The results suggest that artificial stimulation of seed bank germination for management purposes will not produce vegetation changes as large as those suggested by differences in species lists.

Effect of Watering and Soil Moisture on Mercury Emissions from Soils   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
This paper presents data from experiments that measured Mercury (Hg) flux as a function of water addition and subsequent soil drying, and maintenance of soil water content over time utilizing small dynamic gas exchange chambers and large mesocosms. When soil surfaces were dry and water was added at an amount less than that necessary to saturate the soil an immediate large (relative to dry soil flux) release of Hg occurred. Diel Hg emissions from soils, unenriched (0.02 μg g−1) and enriched (3 μg g−1) in Hg and wet below saturation, were significantly elevated above that occurring from dry soils (2–5 times depending on soil water content) for weeks to months. Enhancement of emissions from wet soils in direct sunlight were greater than that from soils shaded or in the dark suggesting that a synergism exists between soil moisture and light. When soils were watered to saturation Hg emissions were suppressed or remained the same depending on the degree of saturation. It is hypothesized that the addition of soil water in amounts less than that necessary to saturate the soil surface results in an immediate release of elemental Hg from soil surface as the more polar water molecule out competes Hg for binding sites. As the water moves into the soil, Hg adsorbed to soil particles is desorbed into soil gas and dissolved in the soil water. The process of evaporation facilitates movement of Hg as mass flow to the soil surface where it is made available for subsequent release. The latter is hypothesized to be an important process by which Hg is recharged at the soil–air interface.  相似文献
