First results are presented on the composition, abundance and vertical distribution of the thaliacean fauna in the Levantine basin obtained from stratified tows at three deep-sea sites in 1993: SE off Crete, and SW and NE off Cyprus. Samples with a 10 m2-MOCNESS (mesh size 1.67 mm) were poor in species and specimens as compared to samples with a 1 m2-double-MOCNESS (0.333 mm). Of the 12 species identified, six species belonged to the most abundant Doliolida, predominated by the phorozooids of Doliolum nationalis, five species belonged to the Salpida and one to the Pyrosomatida. Thaliaceans, most abundant by species and numbers SE off Crete, comprised ≤0.2% of the local mesozooplankton standing stocks. Presumably, they did not contribute substantially to the vertical flux generating the locally increased biomass and activity of the microbial benthos at the 4,300 m deep Cretean site. Most doliolids and salps were collected from the epipelagic and upper mesopelagic layers, and appeared to be most abundant close to the deep maximum of chlorophyll-a. Samples below 150 m were rarely rich in specimens, although two species performed diel migrations from the mesopelagic zone into the surface layers where some vertical segregation was evidenced. The aspect of niche separation is discussed. 相似文献

The study evaluated the nutritional quality and investigated the heavy metals concentration in muscle tissues of five commercially important marine fish species, including brownspotted grouper (Epinephelus chlorostigma), squaretail coralgrouper (Plectropomus areolatus), black pomfret (Parastromateus niger), goldbanded jobfish (Pristipomoides multidens), and blueskin seabream (Polysteganus coeruleopunctatus) from the Red Sea, Jeddah Coast, Saudi Arabia. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the proximate chemical composition of fish muscles in these species. The highest protein content (17.66 ± 0.58%) was achieved in blueskin seabream while the lowest (15.28 ± 0.46%) was observed in brownspotted grouper. The highest lipid content (2.97 ± 0.45%) was recorded in squaretail coralgrouper while the lowest (1.52 ± 0.26%) was observed in blueskin seabream. Heavy metal concentrations varied significantly within and between fish species under study (p < 0.05). Significant differences in the concentration of heavy metals among fish species were recorded. Results revealed that the bioaccumulation of Cr, Fe, Ni, and Cd in muscles of fish species under study was higher than the standard concentration, but that of Mn, Cu, and Pb were less than the standard concentration recommended in the EU, FAO, and WHO guidelines. In conclusion, these fish species represent a high-quality food source but is unsafe due to the level of certain minerals in their tissues. Results also indicated that the Red Sea environment is contaminated with heavy metals, which was reflected in the tissues of fishes used in this study. 相似文献

Studies on the chemical composition of adult pollan were carried out monthly from January to December 1977. Sex, weight of scaled fillet, and gonads were examined in 184 fish. Chemical composition which includes water, fat and ash content was analysed in the whole fish, muscle and gonads. This paper attempts to account for the fat and protein flow within fish of both sexes during gonad maturation. Extreme differences between males and females have been recorded in the fat deposition process during summer and spawning period. In spite of our fragmentary knowledge of spawning behaviour in pollan, an explanation is offered for these phenomena. The changes in fat content of female gonads were followed closely throughout the year and the cost of egg production was estimated as a percentage of the amount of fat deposited in the body. Since a similar growth pattern was found for both sexes of pollan, differences in feeding intensity might account for the difference in energy expenditure. Amino acid content was analysed in muscle and gonads and an Essential Amino Acid Index (EAAI) was calculated. There were some changes in EAAI which depended on sex and season. Finally, a new method for evaluation of muscle production expressed as fat and protein is used to determine the most suitable time for fish harvesting. 相似文献

At present 8 species of Alexandrium genus have been found in seas and adjacent waters of Russia: A. acatenella, A. catenella, A. insuetum, A. margalefii, A. ostenfeldii, A. pseudogonyaulax, A. tamarense, and A. tamutum. The distribution and population density of Alexandrium species varied within the surveyed area of the Pacific: in the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk, 7 species were recorded; 3 species were recorded along the Pacific coast of Kamchatka; and 2 species were found in the Bering Sea. A. tamarense was the most widespread and abundant species over the area. A. insuetum was recorded only in the Sea of Japan, and A. catenella, in the Sea of Okhotsk (Terpeniya Bay). The highest concentration of Alexandrium spp. (2–7 million cells/l) was recorded along the Pacific coast of Kamchatka and in the Bering Sea; in the Sea of Okhotsk, a rather high concentration (51000 cells/l) was registered in Aniva Bay; in the Sea of Japan, the highest concentration was recorded in Peter the Great Bay (6000 cells/l). The distribution of cysts (spores) in surface sediments of the Pacific coast of Russia as a whole reflected the pattern of distribution of vegetative cells of Alexandrium. Cysts of Alexandrium cf. tamarense prevailed all over the area, with the maximum concentration along the Pacific coast of Kamchatka. Beyond that type of cysts, insignificant numbers of cysts of Alexandrium cf. minutum were recorded in Peter the Great Bay and Aniva Bay. Analysis of seasonal dynamics revealed that cells of Alexandrium spp. occurred in Peter the Great Bay from June up to September, and along the Pacific coast of Kamchatka from April to October. In the first region, the maximum density was recorded in August; it was provided by A. pseudogonyaulax (59% of the total density of Alexandrium), A. tamarense (35%), and A. insuetum (6%). In the second region, it was recorded in July, thanks only to development of A. tamarense. 相似文献

The chemical composition of fossil resins from Middle to Late Eocene lignite samples of the western margin of Bengal Basin, India, has been chemically analyzed to infer their botanical affinity. The terpenoid content of the resins has been characterized using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Sesquiterpenoid and triterpenoid components show close affinity with those in extant dammer (Dipterocarpaceae) resin (class II) and indicate the common occurrence of dipterocarps in the forest growing under warm tropical climate in the area at that time. Rich palynofloral assemblages dominated by Dipterocarpaceae pollen grains recovered from the lignite samples corroborate the chemical data. 相似文献

The intentional introduction of red king crab, Paralithodes camtschatica (Tilesius, 1815) in the Barents Sea represent one of a few successful cases and one that now supports a commercial fishery.
Introductions of alien species into new environments are often associated with genetic bottlenecks, which cause a reduction
in the genetic variation, and this could be important for the spreading potential of the species in the Atlantic Ocean. Red
king crab samples collected in the Varangerfjord located on the Barents Sea (northern Norway) were compared with reference
crab samples collected from the Bering Sea and Kamchatka regions in the Pacific Ocean. All samples were screened for eleven
microsatellite loci, based on the development of species-specific primers. The observed number of alleles per locus was similar,
and no reduction in genetic variation, including gene diversity and allelic richness, was detected between the Varangerfjord
sample and the reference sample from Okhotsk Sea near Kamchatka, indicating no genetic bottlenecking at least for the microsatellite
loci investigated. The same results were found in comparison with the sample from Bering Sea. The level of genetic differentiation
among the samples, measured as overall F
ST
across all loci, was relatively low (0.0238) with a range of 0.0035–0.1000 for the various loci investigated. The largest
pairwise F
ST
values were found between the Bering Sea and Varangerfjord/Barents Sea samples, with a value of 0.0194 across all loci tested.
The lowest value (0.0101) was found between the Varangerfjord and Kamchatka samples. Genetic differentiation based on exact
tests on allele frequencies revealed highly significant differences between all pairwise comparisons. The high level of genetic
variation found in the Varangerfjord/Barents Sea sample could be of significance with respect to further spreading of the
species to other regions in the North Atlantic Ocean. 相似文献

The distribution and relative biomass of cephalopods from pelagic waters off eastern Australia was examined between 1997 and
2004 from stomach contents of swordfish, yellowfin tuna and dolphinfish taken in the domestic longline fishery. A total of
38 taxa from 19 families were identified. Comparison of the species composition of the three predators indicated pronounced
differences in cephalopod species composition. In swordfish, species of the family Ommastrephidae, particularly Ommastrephes bartramii (Lesueur 1821) and Nototodarus gouldi (McCoy 1888) dominated, whereas a more diverse mix of species was identified from yellowfin-sampled cephalopods. Todaropsis eblanae (Ball 1841) was the main cephalopod sampled from the surface-dwelling dolphinfish. For swordfish-sampled cephalopods, significant
relationships were found between biomass and season, fluorescence and year. In yellowfin tuna, cephalopod biomass was significantly
correlated with season, area and sea surface temperature. Significant factors differed between predator-sampler, possibly
reflecting the limits of the predator, but could also give insights into individual cephalopod species distributions. However,
the increase in cephalopod biomass over summer in both swordfish and yellowfin tuna suggested cephalopod biomass was higher
over summer in the region. 相似文献

The food habits of the endangered giant water bug, Lethocerus deyrolli, were studied in the rice fields of Nose, in the north of Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Field observations revealed that frogs were the most important prey item. Frogs represented 86.4% and 78.6% in the diet of L. deyrolli in spring and summer, respectively. Among seven species of three families (Hylidae, Rhacophoridae, and Ranidae) exploited by L. deyrolli, the most important food item was adult Hyla japonica in spring and juvenile Rana nigromaculta in summer. Fish and aquatic arthropods were not considered important foods for L. deyrolli. The frog‐dependent food habits indicate that the recovery and conservation of frogs should be prioritized to protect L. deyrolli from extinction. 相似文献

Variation in the abundance, distribution and size of four species of mangrove littorinid gastropods (genus Littoraria) was investigated using a nested sampling design at different spatial scales along the East African coast, from Tanzania to South Africa. Littorinid abundance and diversity decreased abruptly south of Inhaca Island at the southern end of the study area. All species presented a large-scale spatial variation in abundance, with L. subvittata showing the greatest abundance while L. intermedia was rare. Littoraria scabra and L. intermedia were found mainly at the seaward edge of the forests. Littoraria subvittata increased in abundance in the middle of the forest and towards the landward side. Littoraria pallescens occurred mainly at the seaward edge and in the middle areas in the Rhizophora zone. These small-scale variations show contrasting specific distribution patterns within the mangrove, likely reflecting different tolerances to physical factors and biological interactions. All species appeared decreased in shell height from north to south. Littoraria scabra was always significantly larger than other species at all mangrove study sites. Handling editor: P. Viaroli 相似文献

The eastern Asia-North America disjunction is one of the most interesting biogeographical patterns, but its formation is still in much debate. Here nucleotide sequences of five cpDNA regions, nrDNA ITS and two low-copy nuclear genes (LEAFY, 4CL) were employed to reconstruct the phylogeny and to explore the historical biogeography of Thuja, a typical eastern Asia-North America disjunct genus. High topological discordance was observed between chloroplast and nuclear gene trees, even between different nuclear gene trees, suggesting that Thuja could have a reticulate evolutionary history due to multiple interspecific hybridization events. The eastern Asian species Thuja koraiensis might have obtained its chloroplast genome from the eastern North American species T. occidentalis by chloroplast capture, while the western North American species T. plicata is very likely to have inherited a recombinant cpDNA. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of multiple genes, DIVA-reconstruction of the distribution history, molecular clock estimation and fossil data, we inferred that Thuja could have originated from the high-latitude areas of North America in the Paleocene or earlier with subsequent expansion into eastern Asia through the Bering Land Bridge. The two eastern Asia species T. standishii and T. sutchuenensis have a sister relationship, and their split could have occurred in the Oligocene or early Miocene. In the present study, the selection of molecular markers in biogeographic studies was also discussed. Since most previous studies on the eastern Asia and North America disjunction are based on uniparentally inherited cpDNA and (or) directly sequenced nrDNA ITS data, the historical reticulate evolution in the studied groups might have been underestimated. Therefore, we suggest that multiple genes from different genomes, especially low-copy nuclear genes, be used in this research area in the future. 相似文献

Twelve species of microalgae, isolated from north Australian marine, freshwater and hypersaline environments, were grown under controlled conditions of temperature, pH, photon flux density and salinity, and analysed for ash, total protein, water soluble carbohydrates, chlorophylla, total lipids, total fatty acids and fatty acid composition. Highest levels of the polyunsaturated fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid [20:5(n-3)] were found in the marine diatoms.Nitzschia (frustulum) andN. closterium (23.1% and 15.2% of total fatty acids, respectively). None of the species studied had levels of docosahexaenoic acid [22:6(n-3)] greater than 1.1 % of total fatty acids. None of the chlorophyte species contained significant levels of either 20:5(n-3) or 22:6(n-3). The highest total fatty acid concentration of all species in the study was found in the freshwater chlorophyte speciesScenedesmus dimorphus (105 mg g–1 dry wt). The hypersaline speciesDunaliella salina had the highest total lipid content (28.1% dry wt), followed byN. closterium, N. (frustulum) andNavicula sp. (24.2–27.8% dry wt).Chlamydomonas sp. had the highest protein content (66.9% dry wt).N. (frustulum) was highlighted as a possible useful source of lipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids in mixed microalgal diets for mariculture organisms used in tropical aquaculture.Author for correspondence 相似文献
