Kanazawa, K. 1995 11 30 How spatangoids produce their traces: relationship between burrowing mechanism and trace structure.
Two spatangoid echinoids, Echinocardium cordatum and Lovenia elongata , were allowed to produce their traces in poorly and well-sorted sediments in aquaria. In poorly sorted sediments they formed distinct traces, comparable to fossil traces. Sorting of sediment occurred during transportation by the lateroventral spines and brought about characteristic patterns in grain size at the bottoms of the burrows and in redeposited sediment, which made the traces visible. Differences in the burrowing mechanism between E. cordatum and L. elongata are reflected in their trace structures. E. cordatum formed a laminated backlill structure which resulted from periodic accumulation of excavated sediment behind it, while L. elongata simply pushed excavated sediment by compression to the posterior sides of the test, so that their traces lack a distinct laminated structure and the width of the trace becomes larger than that of the animal. In well-sorted sediment, the echinoids burrowed in the same way as in poorly sorted sediment, but no visible trace was produced other than a drain tube. These observations reasonably explain some characteristic modes of occurrence of fossil spatangoid traces. Echinocardium cordatum had long been considered as cosmopolitan, but molecular data revealed it is a complex of cryptic species, with two non-hybridizing species (B1 & B2) in the Mediterranean Sea living in syntopy with Echinocardium mediterraneum. Histological analyses of the gonads from a 17-month sampling period revealed a statistically significant time lag between the Maturity Indices of E.?cordatum and E.?mediterraneum. The main environmental stimulus may be different for the two nominal species, possibly seawater temperature for E.?cordatum and chlorophyll a concentration for E.?mediterraneum. Within the E.?cordatum complex, spawning timing and synchrony are different according to major geographic areas (Atlantic/Pacific/Mediterranean) and/or the corresponding genetic subdivision [A/P/(B1 & B2)]. In contrast, the effects of temperature on the reproductive cycle seem rather to mirror the genetic lineages than environmental similarities of the different localities. Between the sister species (B1 & B2) no differences could be detected, maybe due to small sample sizes.  相似文献

Various test features in six specimens of Echinocardium cordatum collected from South Africa, Trindade Island (South Atlantic), Australia, Japan and Ireland were compared with previously established data relating to British and New Zealand specimens. Morphological variations between the specimens were interpreted as infra-specific differences and no evidence was detected that the spatangoid conventionally defined as E. cordatum is more than a single species throughout its extensive geographical range.  相似文献

The stomach contents of 196 razorfish ( Xyrichthys novacula ), collected in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Ponza Island, Italy) between July and December 1994, were examined in order to assess the diet and to analyse size-related dietary variation of the species. The diet of X. novacula showed a strict relationship with well-sorted fine sand (SFBC) benthic species, mostly Mollusca and Echinodermata, as pointed out by the analysis at the specific level of the stomach contents. Mollusca Pelecipoda, essentially Acanthocardium tuberculatum and Echinodermata, with Echinocardium cordatum , made up 90% of the volume of prey of X. novacula. Mysidacea and Gastropoda were frequent but volumetrically less important. The study showed that male and female X. novacula were not effectively segregated by trophic dimension in the study area. The niche overlap between males and females in prey composition was pronounced, as evidenced by the significantly high values of Schoener's index with larger males that showed a greater tendency towards predation of large prey. The increment in length (L.I.) in males, despite a decrease in the percentage body weight increment (B.W.I.), could represent the result of a male reproductive feature: the lack of sperm competition allows the males much more energy to devote to growth than do that of the females of this species.  相似文献

The specific status of the heart-urchin Echinocardium cordatum (Pennant) around New Zealand is discussed in the context of the suggestion that the New Zealand form of this spatangoid is sufficiently distinct from E. cordatum to be regarded as a separate species, namely E. australe Gray or E. zealandicum Gray. A brief history of the problem is outlined and it is demonstrated that, from the beginning of the present century, specialist opinion has favoured the unitary species concept and been unenthusiastic about the validity of Gray's species. The pattern of variability revealed by a comparative morphological study of E. cordatum from the British Isles and E. australe/zealandicum from New Zealand did not support the specific separation of the Australasian species. Alternatively, it is proposed that the morphological structure of the test in E. cordatum may be considerably influenced by sediment texture and that the distinctiveness of some of the New Zealand specimens is related to their occupation of very fine deposits, which are not commonly exploited by E. cordatum around the British Isles.  相似文献

The lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer) is a natural enemy of several insect pests and feeds on pollen and nectar to survive periods when prey is scarce. The effect of the feeding interval on the development, survival, fecundity, and longevity of C. maculata was determined. Newly hatched larvae of C. maculata were reared individually and fed with eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) at intervals of one, two, and three days under controlled conditions (23 ± 1oC; 60 ± 10% RH; 12 h phtophase). The duration of larval instars and the total larval stage was prolonged as the feeding interval increased. The larval period lasted on average 9.2 ± 0.19 days when the larvae were fed daily with prey, and 14.6 ± 0.48 days when food was offered at three-day intervals. There was an inverse relationship between food intervals, survival, and weight of larvae and adults of the coccinellid. Survival rate of larvae fed daily was 76.8%, while the rate was 50.0% and 23.4% for larvae fed every two and three days, respectively. Coleomegilla maculata showed fecundity of 781.1 ± 149.02, 563.4 ± 80.81 and 109.0 ± 103.0 eggs when fed daily and at intervals of two and three days, respectively.  相似文献

The stages of development of laboratory-reared eggs and larvae of Rhombosolea tapirina and Ammotrelis rostratus are described. They both exhibited á typical pleuronectid pattern of development. At ambient seawater temperature of 11.1–13.8° C R. tapirina eggs hatched 83–93 h after fertilization and larvae metamorphosed c. 65 days later at mean length of 8.83 mm. Hatching of A. rostratus eggs occurred 93–105 h after fertilization and larvae metamorphosed after c. 69 days (mean length 11.21 mm) at 12.7–16.5° C. The two species can be readily separated by their morphology, meristics and pigmentation. In particular, the eggs differ in diameter, only R. tapirina larvae possess a pair of spines in the otic region, and juvenile A. rostratus have only a left pelvic fin.  相似文献

Hypoechinorhynchus magellanicus Szidat, 1950 (Acanthocephala: Arhythmacanthidae) is redescribed based on specimens collected from a sub-Antarctic notothenioid fish, Champsocephalus esox (Günther). The host was caught in the Beagle Channel (Magellanic sub-region). H. magellanicus has a trunk with an antero-dorsal curvature, a spherical proboscis, spines on the anterior region of the trunk, narrow lemnisci which are considerably longer than the proboscis receptacle, six cement glands and a single vaginal sphincter. The proboscis is armed with 40 hooks, including 15 large hooks with roots and 25 rootless basal spines. The large hooks are arranged in 10 alternate rows of one and two hooks. Each single large hook is followed by two spines, and pairs of large hooks are followed by single spines. Ten single spines are also present at the base of the proboscis between the rows. The eggs have polar prolongations of the middle envelope.  相似文献

Storm's Stork Ciconia stormi is one of the rarest of the storks, regarded as globally endangered and found only in parts of western Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Prior to this study, its breeding biology was unknown and the population status in Indonesia was not well understood. Its breeding habitat, prey, behaviour, voice, eggs and the development of the young are described here for the first time. Breeding biology was studied in 1989 at a nest in south Sumatra, Indonesia. The nest was in the transition zone between mangrove and freshwater swamp forest. Incubation took less than 29 days, and two eggs hatched. Fish 2–7 cm long comprised 67% of the prey for feeding young. The chick was fully feathered at 52–57 days and was seen flying when 57–62 days old. The species is rare in south Sumatra. It occurs in low numbers and flocks of up to seven birds were observed. The density is estimated at 20–40 birds within 110,000 ha of primary swamp forest. At this density, the population would be below 100 birds in south Sumatra and between 100 and 300 in Indonesia. The species is threatened by development and conversion of primary swamp forest.  相似文献

Abstract:  A mass rearing method for Erigone atra (Blackwall) (Araneae: Linyphiidae) allowing continuous laboratory rearing is described. Twenty 1–2-day old spiderlings were kept together in plastic boxes, which were filled with soil containing a culture of the Collembola species, Lepidocyrtus lanuginosus (Gmelin) (Entomobryidae), and serving the spiders as a continuous available prey source. Once per week vestigial-wing fruit flies of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) were provided as additional prey. In addition, the rearing boxes were filled with wood-wool serving spiders as points of contact for their webs. After 3–5 weeks most of the spiderlings developed to adults, which were separated individually into glass tubes filled with soil and Collembola until all of them became adult. To produce a new generation of spiders 20–40 adult/subadult spiders originating from different mass rearing boxes were brought together and kept and fed in the same way as the spiderlings. Within a few days females started to produce eggsacs. The eggsacs were transferred into glass tubes filled with a layer of moist plaster of Paris until the spiderlings hatched, which were then bred as described above. Erigone atra was bred over 12 generations within a period of 2 years. The mean rearing success (from 1 to 2-day-old spiderlings to adults) was 59.3%. Decreasing rearing success, decrease of fecundity or decrease of adult spider size were not observed. Advantages and use of the mass rearing method are discussed in relation to rearing methods for other spiders.  相似文献

FORAGING OF JUVENILE MONK SEALS AT FRENCH FRIGATE SHOALS, HAWAII   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
Emaciation and poor survivorship of juvenile Hawaiian monk seals at French Frigate Shoals atoll prompted a study of their foraging, using video camera technology ( crittercam ). Nine juveniles between the ages of 1 and 3 yr (six males, three females) were fitted with crittercam to identify their foraging habitat and feeding behavior. All feeding was directed at small (≤ 10 cm), cryptic, benthic prey. Older seals (ages 2 and 3), varied in their foraging intensity with most of their attention directed at shallow atoll depths (10–30 m). In contrast, the three yearlings focused all their feeding in the sand fields (50–100 m) on the atoll's outer slope. Bottom trawls were used to assess the prey abundance of the sand habitat and found 70% of the numerical catch was flounder ( Bothidae ). Extrapolating the yearlings' prey capture rate (0.13/min, derived from the crittercam video) over their total bottom time yielded an estimated 1–1.3 kg/day of flounder. The mean size of flounder (5 ± 1.7 cm) caught in the bottom trawls was close to the size at which larval flounder settle from the plankton (3 cm), suggesting that localized changes in oceanography could directly impact the seals' prey supply. Extensive use of sand communities by young seals may be the strongest link yet identified between juvenile survivorship and oceanographic dynamics.  相似文献

Gastric lavage was used to investigate the effects of temperature, prey type and prey size on gastric evacuation in small cod Gadus morhua and whiting Merlangius merlangus . The fish were fed to satiation and subsequently the stomach contents were sampled to determine the rate at which food was evacuated. Satiation meal size was positively related to temperature and differed between prey types. The gastric evacuation rate (GER) also tended to increase with temperature and varied with prey type. GER at temperatures of 11.3–12.7° C averaged 1.5–1.7 times higher than at 6–9.5° C. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the evacuation of lugworm Arenicola marina , sandeel Ammodytes spp., and herring Clupea harengus , but the GER of brown shrimp Crangon vulgaris was much slower (P<0.05). No significant changes in GER were observed when fish were fed on three different size groups of either herring or brown shrimp. In whiting, there was no significant difference in the GER of individual herring or brown shrimp when they were fed as single species meals or incorporated in meals containing a mixture of prey species.  相似文献

The morphology of relaxed cystacanths of polymorphid acanthocephalans collected from notothenioid fishes in the Beagle Channel (Magellanic subregion of sub-Antarctica) is described. A parasite of birds, Andracantha baylisi (Zdzitowiecki, 1986), was found in Patagonotothen longipes and Champsocephalus esox. It has: a proboscis 0.82–0.89 mm long; a proboscis hook formula of 16 rows of 9/10–10/11, including 4–5 basal hooks; distal hooks with the longest blades; a fore-trunk not separated from the hind-trunk by a constriction; large somatic spines arranged in two zones separated by a zone of small, loosely dispersed spines; and only the anterior 36–40% of ventral side of the trunk is covered with spines. One male specimen of Corynosoma sp. was found in Patagonotothen tessellata. It differs from A. baylisi in that the distal proboscis hooks are similar in length to the prebasal hooks, it has a smaller proboscis (0.77 mm) and in the distribution of the somatic spines, which are contiguous with the genital spines on the ventral side of the trunk and lack a zone of small spines between zones of larger spines. A parasite of seals and fur seals, Corynosoma evae Zdzitowiecki, 1984, was found in P. longipes and Champsocephalus esox. It has: a proboscis 0.61–0.78 mm long; a proboscis hook formula of 20–22 rows of 12–13, including 3/4–4 basal hooks; prebasal hooks with the longest blades; a trunk divided into fore-trunk and hind-trunk; somatic spines covering the anterior 64–74% of the ventral side of the trunk; genital spines present only in males; and a terminal genital opening in both sexes. Corynosoma beaglense n. sp. was found in Champsocephalus esox. It has: an almost cylindrical proboscis (length 0.52–0.56 mm); a proboscis hook formula of 16 rows of 9/10–10/11, including 4–4/5 basal hooks; distal hooks shorter than the prebasal hooks; a fore-trunk not separated from the hind-trunk by a constriction; somatic spines contiguous with the genital spines on the ventral side of the trunk of the male and covering the entire length of the ventral side of the female trunk, and the presence of genital spines surrounding the terminal genital pore of the male. Blackbirds Turdus merula rearing young in the Botanic Garden, Oxford, were observed over three summers (1979–81). Between 0 and 10 days after fledging the young were divided between the parents so that each fed only certain fledglings and refused to feed others. This division was temporally stable. In broods where another nesting attempt followed, the male usually took responsibility for all the young, but in final broods they were divided fairly evenly. The probability of a fledgling surviving to independence declined as the number of young a parent fed increased; thus division should be favoured. However, if the female fed some young the inter-nest interval increased and the potential number of young that could be raised in that season was curtailed. This trade-off is examined by means of a model. After fledging the young improved in their ability to capture prey successfully and increased the size of the prey taken. At 15–24 days after fledging, self-feeding became more profitable than parental feeding and the young became fully independent. The timing of this transition is influenced by the parents, and it is suggested that by dividing the brood, parental feeding can be more carefully regulated so that finer control over the timing of independence is achieved.  相似文献

Abstract.  European pit-building antlions ( Euroleon nostras / Geoffroy in Fourcroy/) detect their prey by sensing the vibrations that prey generate during locomotory activity. The behavioural reactions and some of the physical properties of substrate vibrations in sand are measured to observe signal transmission through the substrate. The frequency range of the signals of four arthropod species ( Tenebrio molitor , Pyrrhocoris apterus , Formica sp. and Trachelipus rathkei ) is 0.1–4.5 kHz and acceleration values are in the range 400 μm s−2 to 1.5 mm s−2. Substrate particle size and the frequency of prey signals both influence the propagation properties of vibratory signals. The damping coefficient at a frequency 300 Hz varies from 0.26 to 2.61 dB cm−1 and is inversely proportional to the size of the sand particle. The damping coefficient is positively correlated with the frequency of the pulses. Vibrations in finer sand are attenuated more strongly than in coarser sand and, consequently, an antlion detects its prey only at a short distance. The reaction distance is defined as the distance of the prey from the centre of the pit when the antlion begins tossing sand as a reaction to the presence of prey. The mean reaction distance is 3.3 cm in the finest sand (particle size ≤ 0.23 mm) and 12.3 cm in coarser sand (particle size 1–1.54 mm). The most convenient sands for prey detection are considered to be medium particle-sized sands.  相似文献

Aquarium observations of naticid gastropods from Hong Kong show that different species attack their bivalve prey in different ways. Natica gualteriana and Glossaulax didyma appeared always to use conventional modes of boring, i.e., through one shell valve, before consuming the prey, but some larger prey of C. didyma with incomplete borings were consumed after having apparently suffocated before boring was complete. In contrast, Polinices tumidus prey may be side-bored, edge-bored (i.e., through the commisure of the valves) or suffocated and consumed without boring. The frequency of each of these modes of attack vary with different prey species. Non-boring prédation, in aquarium experiments, accounted for 14.7–54.9% of attacks with different species of prey. Suffocated prey were found to be enwrapped in a thick, viscous coat of mucus, which in partially consumed prey showed a round hole overlying the ventral shell gape marking the entrance hole made by the proboscis. The observations reveal considerable flexibility in predation behaviour in this tropical naticid and have important implications in the interpretation of naticid prédation rates in recent and fossil dead shell assemblages.  相似文献

A new acanthocephalan species, Spiracanthus bovichthys n. gen. n. sp., is described. Samples were taken from 26 marine fish species between 23 and 53 degrees S of Chile. The parasite was found in the intestine of 6 species and only between 36 and 40 degrees S, especially in those fish that prey on small crustaceans in the upper and sublittoral zone. The parasite was found in Bovichthys chilensis (Reagan). Auchenionchus variolosus (Valenciennes), Calliclinus genigutattus (Valenciennes), Sindoscopus australis (Fowler and Bean), Myxodes cristatus Valenciennes, and Gobiesox marmoratus (Jenyns). However, only the first species is a suitable host for the parasite as evidenced by the presence of mature females. This acanthocephalan belongs to Arhythmacanthidae, but it does not correspond to any genus described. Spiracanthus bovichthys is different in the number and spiralled distribution of its hooks in the proboscis. In the short proboscis, 3 groups of hooks are distinguished according to size, summing up to 150-190 hooks. The group of largest hooks are found in the apical part of the proboscis, and there are 10 diagonal rows of small hooks from the prebasal to basal proboscis. Its trunk is covered partially by small spines. Amphipod and isopods were the prey items shared among the host fish species and are the best candidates to be the intermediate hosts of S. bovichthys.  相似文献

Functional relationships were derived in order to describe the effects of fish weight (262–2066 g), temperature (1–14° C), prey size and ration size (0.4–8.4% body weight) on gastric evacuation in cod fed four natural prey types. Interindividual (unexplained) differences among voluntary fed cod were relatively large. Power functions were appropriate for describing the effects of fish weight and ration size on the half-time of evacuation. Effects of meal and/or prey size appeared to counterbalance the effects of cod size. It is suggested that when cod of different sizes are fed fixed proportions of their body weight evacuation time is constant and independent of body size. There was found to be an exponential relationship between temperature and gastric evacuation time but, observations made at similar temperatures at different times of the year suggested that seasonal effects were of minor importance.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Eggs of Ephemerella ignita (Poda) were kept at eight constant temperatures (range 5.9–19.8°C) in the laboratory. Over 85% of the eggs hatched in the temperature range 10.0–14.2°C but the percentage decreased markedly to 39% at 5.9°C and 42% at 19.8°C. Hatching time (days after oviposition) decreased with increasing water temperature over the range 5.9–14.2°C and the relationship between the two variables was well described by a hyperbola. Therefore, the time taken for development was expressed in units of degree-days above a threshold temperature. Mean values (with 95%CL) were 552 (534–573) degree-days above 4.25°C for 10% of the eggs hatched, 862 (725–1064) degree-days above 3.57°C for 50% hatched and 1383 (1294–1486) degree-days above 3.14°C for 90% hatched. These values can be used to predict hatching times at temperatures below 14.68°C for 10% hatched, 14.54°C for 50% hatched and 14.45°C for 90% hatched. At higher temperatures, the hatching time and the number of degree-days required for development both increased with increasing temperature. Equations were developed to estimate the number of degree-days required for development at these higher temperatures.
Eggs were also placed in the Wilfin Beck, a small stony stream in the English Lake District. Maximum and minimum water temperatures were recorded in each week and the summation of degree-days was used to predict the dates on which 10%, 50% and 90% of the eggs should have hatched. There was good agreement between these estimates and the actual hatching times. Only 10–15% of the eggs hatched between October and late February with most of the eggs hatching in March, April and May. Nymphs hatching in October and November probably did not survive the winter.  相似文献

Schistocerca gregaria sometimes refuse to lay eggs into the “old sand” that is kept in their cages for several days. We investigated why they rejected the old sand for oviposition. Locusts exclusively laid eggs into new sand when presented together with old sand, indicating that the old sand contained an oviposition-inhibiting (OI) factor. We examined whether this factor was derived from locust feces or fed grass (Bromus catharticus). Locusts laid all eggs into the sand with grass when presented together with sand containing feces. In contrast, few eggs were laid into the sand with grass when clean sand was offered at the same time, suggesting that the OI factor originated from the grass and was concentrated in the feces. The OI factor was efficiently extracted from feces with water compared with ethanol and acetone. OI activity was detected by extraction of feces with water for 1 min, although a longer extraction time yielded higher activity. The water extract of feces retained OI activity after boiling. None of the eggs which were buried in sand containing fecal extract hatched, whereas most of the eggs buried in clean sand or sand containing grass extract hatched, showing a correlation between OI activity and a lethal effect on eggs.  相似文献
