Australopithecus robustus has a distinct mandibular anatomy, with a broad and deep corpus and a tall, relatively upright ramus. How this anatomy arose through development is unknown, as gross mandibular size and shape change have not been thoroughly examined quantitatively in this species. Herein, I investigate A. robustus mandibular growth by comparing its ontogenetic series with a sample of recent humans, examining age‐related size variation in 28 linear measurements. Resampling is used to compare the amount of proportional size change occurring between tooth eruption stages in the small and fragmentary A. robustus sample, with that of a more complete human skeletal population. Ontogenetic allometry of corpus robusticity is also assessed with least squares regression. Results show that nearly all measurements experience greater average increase in A. robustus than in humans. Most notably, A. robustus corpus breadth undergoes a spurt of growth before eruption of M1, likely due in part to delayed resorption of the ramus root on the lateral corpus. Between the occlusion of M1 and M2, nearly all dimensions experience greater proportional size change in A. robustus. Nested resampling analysis affirms that this pattern of growth differences between species is biologically significant, and not a mere byproduct of the fossil sample size. Some species differences are likely a function of postcanine megadontia in A. robustus, although the causes of other differences are less clear. This study demonstrates an important role of the postnatal period for mandibular shape development in this species. Am J Phys Anthropol 154:436–446, 2014. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A bioclimatic analysis of the crested tinamous was conducted to explore climatic factors underpinning the distribution of both Eudromia elegans and E. formosa and to evaluate its potential application in paleontological studies. The study utilized records throughout the entire known range of Eudromia spp. in southern South America. Relationships between 20 environmental parameters and the presence of Eudromia species were established, mapping and characterizing their spatial distribution in a geographic information system using BIOCLIM and MAXENT algorithms. The MAXENT prediction map shows a more homogeneous pattern while BIOCLIM showed a patchier pattern. The models applied here generated maps that adjust to the well-known previous distributions of both species. Nevertheless, for Eudromia elegans, the distribution predicted by MAXENT includes areas where it is actually considered absent, and the BIOCLIM prediction does not include some areas where it is presumed present. Eudromia formosa were found in warmer and wetter sites than E. elegans. Low precipitation areas were identified as suitable for Eudromia elegans. Strong differences between the climatic profiles for both Eudromia spp distributions occurred, with the precipitation the most important influence. E. formosa tolerates the highest maximum temperatures, whereas E. elegans supports the lowest temperatures.  相似文献

Three Bothrops species are known to be present along an extensive and generally xeric band of the south‐eastern portion of South America. Yet, the environmental factors responsible for the maintenance of the structure of this community have remained undetermined. To have a better understanding of snakes' geographic range limits in Argentina, we modelled the ecological niche of Bothrops alternatus, B. ammodytoides and B. diporus to identify areas of their occurrence and sympatry. We used snakes presence records and pseudo‐absence data with topographic (altitude and slope), vegetation and 19 bioclimatic variables as predictors. These variables were evaluated for each species, using Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis. The distribution of B. alternatus was correlated with temperature, precipitation and vegetation; that of B. ammodytoides with altitude, slope, precipitation, temperature and vegetation; and that of B. diporus related only to precipitation and temperature variables. Five variables appeared in all three models (i.e. annual precipitation, precipitation seasonality, precipitation of the driest month, mean diurnal temperature range and temperature range), although with different effects in different species. Probable sympatry areas were identified, for B. alternatus – B. ammodytoides in a narrow area, for B. diporus – B. alternatus in a wide area and B. ammodytoides – B. diporus in a small area. While some factors constrain the distribution of the southernmost pitvipers community in South America to spatially non‐overlapping ranges, others facilitate sympatry by allowing spatial coexistence. We found high sympatry between phylogenetically distantly related pitvipers. Niche‐based Geographic Information Systems modelling allowed us to identify the environmental factors correlated with each pitviper range in Argentina and in its contact zones, and to understand species distributional limits.  相似文献

Apristurus brunneus, A. kampae, and Parmaturus xaniurus were caught by trawl and longline between Washington and southern California (48°N to 32°N latitude) from June 2001 through October 2004. In females, oviducal gland width increased with TL in all three species but remained within 4 to 6% of TL. Oocyte diameter increased with TL during reproductive development in all species, and continued to increase with size after reproductive maturity was reached. The weight-length relationships differed significantly among species but not between sexes of any species from the eastern North Pacific combined. Using logistic regression, it was determined that total length at 50% maturity (TL50) of A. brunneus males was 514 mm TL and all A. brunneus males were mature at 547 mm TL. Female A. brunneus reached TL50 at 501 mm TL and all female A. brunneus were mature at 581 mm TL. Apristurus kampae males and females reached TL50 at approximately 485 mm TL and 490 mm TL, respectively. Parmaturus xaniurus males reached TL50 at 444 mm TL and females at 501 mm TL. Gravid female A. brunneus were found in all months of the year, but gravid P. xaniurus were found primarily June through September. Adult A. kampae females were found only in July through November and there were gravid females in all these months. Based upon gonadosomatic indices, I G, these species may mate within a defined period of time (April through June); however, A. brunneus appear to reproduce throughout the year and P. xaniurus reproduce within a defined season (approximately July through September).  相似文献

In this paper, we report a chromosomal study of three Brazilian species of Colostethus, C. brunneus from the type locality, Colostethus sp. (aff. trilineatus), and Colostethus sp., which is morphologically similar to C. brunneus. The diploid number for C. brunneus was 2n = 24 chromosomes, in agreement with that previously described for specimens from Peru. Colostethus sp. (aff. trilineatus) and Colostethus sp. showed a very similar karyotype with 22 chromosomes. The NOR was located on pair 3 in C. brunneus, on pair 4 in Colostethus sp. (aff. trilineatus), and on pair 2 in Colostethus sp. In one specimen of Colostethus sp., an additional NOR site was located on pair 7 in only one of the homologs. This extra Ag-NOR site was confirmed by FISH using an rDNA probe. In addition to the NOR location, the C-banding pattern was also species-specific, despite the similar chromosomal morphology of the species. These results indicate that although these species may be closely related, there is a clear dichotomy in their chromosome number.  相似文献

Summary Egg production and development of the carabid beetles Notiophilus biguttatus F. and Notiophilus rufipes Curtis were studied in relation to temperature. Adult beetles and larvae were fed springtails of the species Orchesella cincta (Linné). The rate of egg production, at the different temperatures did not differ between the species. As observed in N. biguttatus egg production at a daily fluctuating temperature regime is high compared to egg production at the constant temperatures. Food supply not only has a strong effect on egg production but also on the relation of egg production with temperature, as shown in N. biguttatus. Development times in N. rufipes are longer than in N. biguttatus particularly at low temperatures. The temperature during development has a distinct effect on adult body size. As observed in N. biguttatus body size and fecundity show a strong positive correlation.  相似文献

The coexistence of two common species of predatory cyclopoid copepods, Acanthocyclops robustus and Mesocyclops leuckarti, in a small, eutrophic lake was studied. Both species are of similar size, inhabit the same water layers and have similar seasonal occurrence. A. robustus shows faster embryonic and postembryonic development and produces bigger clutches. Ingestion rates of A. robustus are higher than in M. leuckarti, especially with large prey types and low temperatures. Females of A. robustus are heavily preyed upon by fish. This predation pressure leads to extremely skewed sex ratios, which are unfavourable to population growth. A. robustus is therefore, on balance, favoured in productive lakes. Dominance over M. leuckarti is, however, less clear in warmer years.  相似文献

Cytochrome b (Cyt-b) gene was sequenced for six flatfish species and compared with seven other species belonging to Pleuronectiformes. Monophyly of the family Pleuronectidae representatives was fine supported by bootstrap or other means in several sequence-based trees on Cyt-b gene data. Results revealed that synonymy must be accepted for Hippoglossoides elassodon, and H. robustus, as well as for Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, and P. schrenki. Agrilus biguttatus Fabricius, Agrilus sulcicollis Lacordaire, and Agrilus angustulus Illiger (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) are three beetle species associated with oak trees [Quercus spp. (Fagaceae)] in Europe. In Hungary, all three species were observed in the foliage near freshly cut oak log piles. Agrilus biguttatus was active later in the afternoon, whereas the other species were observed earlier in the day. Dead female models of these three native Agrilus species, as well as the native species Agrilus cyanescens Ratzeburg and the non‐native Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, were pinned onto adjacent leaves in direct sunlight to observe the visual mating approaches of the local male populations. Agrilus biguttatus and A. sulcicollis males flew toward and landed directly on the models from a distance of 1 m. Agrilus angustulus flew toward the models from a similar distance, but rather than landing directly on a model would alight on the leaf, 1–2 cm away, before walking closer to the model while antennating it. For all three species, there was substantial cross‐attraction to models of other species. Both A. biguttatus and A. sulcicollis males chose A. angustulus models less often than their respective conspecific models. Likewise, A. angustulus males approached A. sulcicollis models less often than their normal conspecific models. Agrilus biguttatus males attempted to copulate with both A. biguttatus and A. planipennis models, afterward remaining with them for several minutes. Agrilus biguttatus males spent more time on A. planipennis models than on conspecific models. Thus, there is substantial cross‐species attraction in visually mediated mating approaches and copulation behavior. These findings suggest a common behavioral template for visual mate‐finding among buprestids and a large degree of close‐range mating compatibility between A. biguttatus and A. planipennis.  相似文献

Summary

In this study, morphometric and life history traits were compared between two species of scaly crickets – Paramogoplistes novaki (Krauss, 1888) and Mogoplistes brunneus Serville, 1838. Crickets were collected along the Kr?i? River in SE Croatia using pitfall traps. In total, 37 P. novaki and 105 M. brunneus specimens were included in the analyses. Diagnostic traits such as total body length and pronotum length to width ratio proved to be unreliable particularly in differentiating females of the two species. On the other hand, subgenital plate shape turned out to be useful in distinguishing P. novaki from M. brunneus in all stages. Several new differential morphometric traits were found in adults – subgenital plate length, width and length to width ratio. Higher variability of morphometric traits between the sexes was recorded in M. brunneus than in P. novaki, one of the cues indicating possible neotenic origin of the latter. The activity period of P. novaki was shorter and more autumn-oriented than the activity period of M. brunneus. Their surface activity maxima exhibited clear temporal separation, likely to avoid competition due to niche overlapping. Sex ratio was female-biased in both species, pronouncedly so in M. brunneus, probably indicating higher activity of females due to more frequent foraging and/or seeking for oviposition sites. The current study represents a step forward in understanding morphometric variability and life history of these two little-known scaly cricket species.  相似文献

Blood and saliva samples were collected from 84Aotus azarae boliviensis, 31Ateles paniscus chamek, 130Callicebus brunneus, 130Cebus apella, 117Pithecia irrorata irrorata, and 117Saimiri ustus. Saliva samples were investigated for human ABH antigens by the standard hemagglutination inhibition test. Two species,P. irrorata andC. brunneus showed monomorphism, presenting only the A blood group. Among the polymorphic species,A. paniscus andC. apella presented theO (30 and 3) and A (1 and 127) phenotypes, and the B (80) and AB (4) phenotypes were detected inA. azarae. S. ustus was the only species that presented all the four phenotypes. The observed distribution was as expected assuming Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium to be present in those species that could be tested. The ABH substances were titrated and a comparison among species was made. Serum samples were used to detect natural antibodies and the results showed some disagreement between serum and saliva phenotypes.  相似文献

We describe the sperm ultrastructure of five species of Colostethus from Brazil. The general structures of the spermatozoa (acrosomal complex and flagellar apparatus) were similar to species within the Bufonoidea. Colostethus brunneus, Colostethus sp. (aff. trilineatus), Colostethus nidicola and Colostethus sp. had biflagellated spermatozoa, whereas the spermatozoa of Colostethus stepheni had a single flagellum, a characteristic previously unknown for this genus. In addition, the spermatozoa of this species showed some mitochondria within the thick, undulating membrane. These characteristics are apparently common to dendrobatid species that have a single flagellum. Based on these findings, we tentatively consider biflagellarity to be an apomorphic condition in the Dendrobatidae. In addition, the results described here do not support the proposed regrouping of the ‘brunneus’ and ‘alagoanus’ groups in a monophyletic ‘trilineatus’ group.  相似文献

Deep-sea cephalopods are still poorly studied worldwide. In the case of the Mexican Pacific there is a general lack of basic information concerning their distribution and biology. A series of 132 specimens of pelagic and benthic deep-water cephalopods was obtained during the TALUD project. Samples were mostly obtained with benthic sampling gear that operated as mid-water trawls during the ascent of the nets. Micronekton and Isaacs-Kidd samplers were also occasionally used. The specimens (77 lots in total) were obtained at localities off western Mexico at depths between 122 m and 2200 m and belong to 31 species. Considering material identified to species level only, a total of 13 species were found only at a single station, while five others occurred in 5–6 stations (i.e., Leachia dislocata, Abraliopsis [Pfefferiteuthis] falco, Pterygioteuthis giardi, P. holeyi and Benthoctopus robustus). The most widespread species was Japetella diaphana, collected in 11 stations. Twenty-two of the 31 species are strictly pelagic, eight strictly benthic and one is benthopelagic. Significant new distribution records were obtained for seven species: Doryteuthis opalescens, Gonatus berryi, Todarodes pacificus, Opistoteuthis californiana, Benthoctopus leioderma, B. robustus and Graneledone boreopacifica.  相似文献

The taxonomy and phylogenetic affinities of the putative “New World vulture”Eocathartes robustus,Lambrecht, 1935 and the “hornbill”Geiseloceros robustus Lambrecht, 1935 from the Middle Eocene of the Geisel Valley in Germany are revised. It is shown that the holotype specimens belong to a single individual, whose osteology closely resembles that ofStrigogyps sapea (Peters, 1987) from the Middle Eocene of Messel (Germany). The species is classified intoStrigogyps robustus (Lambrecht, 1935), n. comb., and provides further evidence for the great similarity between the Eocene avifaunas of the Geisel Valley and Messel.Strigogyps is a representative of the Ameghinornithidae whose phylogenetic affinities are uncertain; there is no fossil record of either Cathartidae (New World vultures) or Bucerotidae (hornbills) from the Geisel Valley.  相似文献

A new species of siphonostomatoid copepod, Asterocheres crinoidicola, is parasitic on two closely related comasterid crinoids (Nemaster grandis and Davidaster rubiginosus) in Belize, Central America. An unusually long terminal prolongation of the third segment of the endopod of leg 1 distinguishes this species from all congeners. This is the first report of a copepod parasitic on a crinoid in the Caribbean.  相似文献

In monthly surveys carried out between September 2009 and July 2011 in Antalya Bay, five species of fish were found which have hitherto been unknown from the Antalya Bay: Notacanthus bonaparte, Diaphus metopoclampus, Gadella maraldi, Benthocometes robustus and Evermannella balbo. For the latter species it is the first record for the Turkish Seas.  相似文献

Progressive body‐size dwarfing of animal populations is predicted under chronic mortality stress, such as that inflicted by human harvesting. However, empirical support for such declines in body size due to elevated mortality is lacking. In fact, the size of three macropodid species ─ the two grey kangaroo species, Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus, and the Red‐necked Wallaby, M. rufogriseus ─ appears to have increased since European settlement in Australia, despite these species being subjected to size‐selective harvesting over this period. To test whether this unexpected trend also characterises other species, we sought evidence of human‐induced body‐size changes in the two most widely distributed kangaroo species, the Euro Macropus robustus and Red Kangaroo M. rufus, from the late 19th Century onwards. Spatial autoregressive models controlling for age, sex and island effects were first used to identify environmental predictors of body size and to evaluate multi‐causal explanations for spatial body‐size patterns. Primary productivity emerged as the key driver of body size in both species, while heat conservation was supported as a further mechanism explaining the large body size of M. robustus in cold climatic regions. After controlling for these environmental factors, we find that the size of M. rufus has been stable over time and limited support for a small increase in the size of M. robustus. Hence, there is no empirical evidence that contemporary size‐selective harvesting has reduced body size in these species. Rather, the latter result supports the possibility that pasture improvement and/or dingo control (and associated reduction in predation pressure) facilitated body‐size increases following European settlement in Australia.  相似文献
