Third instar tobacco hornworms (Manduca sexta L.: Sphingidae) on low dietary potassium had a lower relative growth rate than individuals on diets with potassium concentrations reflecting those in host-plants, due to decreased consumption rate, lower efficiencies of conversion of ingested and digested food (ECI and ECD), and a prolonged growth/feeding phase. Furthermore, these larvae, when placed on a diet with a moderate potassium concentration through the fourth stadium, ended up being smaller due to lower ECI and less biomass gained, and had a prolonged growth phase, which suggest an irreversible cost of the previous low potassium diet. Third instar hornworms on high potassium diets had lower ECI and ECD, and they had a prolonged growth phase. These individuals, when placed on a moderate potassium diet in the fourth stadium, gained less biomass, than those previously offered hostplant-like-potassium diets. Body potassium concentrations (% dw) at the end of the third stadium were similar among treatment groups. With increasing potassium concentrations in the diet, utilization efficiencies of potassium decreased and potassium concentrations in the frass increased. Correspondingly, water content (% fw) of the newly-molted fourth instar larvae declined with increasing potassium, indicating a passive loss of water during potassium excretion. Low and high dietary potassium reduced survivorship of third instar larvae; fourth instar caterpillars previously fed the low potassium diet also had poor survivorship. We conclude that, within the normal range of potassium concentrations in the hostplants, caterpillar performance is largely unaffected by potassium concentration, but that potassium-poor and potassium-rich diets, such as those hornworms may sometimes experience, can reduce growth and survivorship.  相似文献

Summary A factorial experiment examined the effects of varying concentrations of the allelochemical rutin in caterpillars and the length of time the caterpillars had fed on the behavioral interactions of predatory stinkbugs (Podisus maculiventris) and their prey (Manduca sexta). Diet had no significant effect on defensive behavior of the caterpillars. The length of time that the caterpillars had fed (1 vs. 24 h) only influenced the frequency of caterpillars knocking the attacking stinkbugs away, with caterpillars knocking the stinkbugs away more often after 24 h of feeding. A second experiment tested the effects of diet (prey fed various concentrations of rutin), temperature (18° C and 28° C) and gender on consumption and growth parameters of fifth instar stinkbugs. At the cooler temperature, the bugs ate more, gained more weight but took twice as long to complete the stadium and consequently had reduced relative consumption and relative growth rates. Diet had no significant effect on biomass gained or stadium duration, but rutin-fed caterpillars did depress the stinkbugs' relative consumption rates. The effect of food quality on relative growth rate (RGR) was temperature dependent; rutin had no significant effect at the cooler temperature, but a high dose of rutin reduced RGR at the warmer temperature. Rutin had a greater negative impact on the females than the males. The effect of rutin on these predators was different than the effect on their prey (this study compared to Stamp (1990, 1992)): the negative effects of rutin seem to impact on the stinkbug's growth rather than on molting.  相似文献

1. The simultaneous effects of allelochemicals ingested by herbivorous insect prey and prey scarcity on the performance of a generalist insect predator were examined.
2. Fifth-instar predatory stinkbugs ( Podisus maculiventris : Pentatomidae) were fed caterpillars ( Manduca sexta : Sphingidae) in three prey scarcity treatments: every day (unlimited amount), one caterpillar every third day, one caterpillar every fifth day. The caterpillars were fed either a plain diet or a diet containing rutin, chlorogenic acid and tomatine, which are three of the major allelochemicals in tomato leaves ( Lycopersicon esculentum : Solanaceae), the preferred food of these caterpillars.
3. Food consumed, efficiency of conversion of ingested food to biomass (ECI), biomass gained, stadium duration and relative growth rate (RGR) of predators were negatively affected by prey scarcity. The allelochemicals negatively affected food consumed and ECI.
4. There were prey scarcity by allelochemical interactions for ECI, biomass gained and RGR. For ECI, the allelochemicals had a greater negative impact on the predatory stinkbugs when prey were scarce. When prey diet contained allelochemicals, biomass gained and RGR declined more steeply with increased prey scarcity. There was an allelochemical by predator gender interaction for biomass gained. Allelochemicals had no effect on biomass gained by female stinkbugs, whereas biomass gained declined more steeply with increased prey scarcity for male stinkbugs fed caterpillars containing allelochemicals than for males fed control caterpillars.  相似文献

Effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 (elevated CO2 vs. ambient CO2) and temperature (+0.67–0.79°C vs. ambient temperature) on the developmental life cycle of Spodoptera litura and the food utilization of the fourth‐instar larvae fed on soybean (resistant cultivar Lamar vs. susceptible landrace JLNMH) grown in open‐top chambers were studied from 2013 to 2015. The results indicated that: (i) compared with ambient CO2, elevated CO2 significantly prolonged the duration of larva and pupa, and adult longevity; significantly decreased the pupation rate, pupal weight, fecundity, the relative growth rate (RGR), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD); and increased the relative consumption rate (RCR) and approximate digestibility (AD). (ii) Compared with ambient temperature, elevated temperature significantly shortened the duration of larva and pupa; significantly decreased the pupal weight; and increased the RGR, RCR, ECD and ECI. (iii) Compared with the susceptible soybean accession JLNMH, the resistant soybean cultivar Lamar significantly prolonged the duration of larva and pupa; significantly decreased the pupation rate, pupal weight, adult longevity, fecundity and RGR, RCR and AD; and increased the indexes of ECD. (iv) At elevated temperature, S. litura fed on resistant vs. susceptible cultivars showed opposite trends in the RGR, RCR, AD, ECD and ECI. In addition, elevated temperature under elevated CO2 significantly decreased the RGR (2014), ECD (2013 & 2014) and ECI (2013) and increased the AD (2013 & 2014) compared with other treatment combinations when S. litura fed on Lamar. Future climatic change of temperature and CO2 concentration would likely affect growth and food utilization of S. litura, with increased food intake, but the reduced fecundity may compensate for the increased food consumption, resulting in no significant reduction in insect‐induced yield loss in soybean production. Nevertheless, use of insect resistant soybean cultivars will aid in ecological management of S. litura and reduce the insecticide load in soybean production.  相似文献

A factorial experiment tested the effects of varying concentrations of the flavonol rutin and daytime temperatures of 20 and 30°C on growth, molting and food utilization efficiencies of third instar tobacco hornworms (Manduca sexta (L.)). Cool temperature prolonged both the growth (=feeding) and non-feeding periods and consequently the relative consumption rates (RCR) and relative growth rates (RGR). Temperature had no impact on the amount of food consumed and the utilization indices of efficiency of conversion of ingested food and efficiency of conversion of digested food to larval biomass. But rutin was more concentrated in the frass of the larvae at the warm temperature. With increasing levels of rutin in the diet, the efficiency of conversion of ingested food tended to decline. Rutin reduced RCR and RGR. At the cool temperature, rutin increased the time spent in the first portion of the non-feeding period disproportionately. Analysis of growth rate intervals within the growth period indicated that at the cool temperature rutin had no discernible impact over the first half of the growth period, during which developmental competence to molt is likely achieved. Overall, these results indicate an overlap in the growth and molting phases and suggest that rutin interferes with physiological processes at the time of molt initiation, with these effects magnified at a cool temperature.  相似文献

The effects of different concentrations of rutin and constant temperature (20 °C) versus alternating temperatures (23∶15 °C) on growth, molting and food utilization efficiencies of third instar tobacco hornworms (Manduca sexta) were determined. Relative consumption rate (RCR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were significantly higher for larvae at the alternating thermal regime compared to those at the constant (representing the average) temperature. With increasing concentrations of rutin, the negative effect of rutin on RCR and RGR increased for the larvae in the alternating thermal regime; however, at the constant temperature, rutin had little effect. The alternating thermal regime promoted synchrony in the timing of spiracle apolysis (the earliest morphological marker of molt). Rutin disrupted that synchrony. I discuss how patterns of host plant resistance may be altered with a decrease, in amplitude of diurnal temperatures (as has been documented recently for temperate regions) through the uncoupling of herbivore performance and allelochemical concentration. I conclude that simultaneous consideration of fluctuating temperatures and allelochemicals is advisable when assessing the effects of temperature and allelochemicals on performance of insect herbivores because interactive effects between temperature and dietary components occur and perhaps are common.  相似文献

We tested for legacy effects of low-N diets offered to newly emerged second-instar spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) larvae for a duration of either one or two full instars on their growth and nutritional physiology in the sixth instar. The experimental design evaluated the effects of initial diet, final diet, and sex on energy consumption, assimilation, retention, and growth rates. Legacy effects were apparent after two instars of low-N diet exposure and were manifested by elevated ( approximately 10%) consumption rates (RCRs) coupled to elevated ( approximately 10%) growth rates (RGRs) and elevated ( approximately 3%) body energy densities, i.e., heightened fat deposition. However, initial dietary N levels had no legacy main effects on food assimilation efficiencies (ADs), and gross (ECI) and net (ECD) food conversion efficiencies. RCR and AD were dependent on an initial x final diet interaction (i.e., nonlinear legacy effects). RGR depended on an initial diet x sex interaction but not on an initial x final diet interaction. Therefore, the legacy effects of low-N initial diets on RGR and body energy density were simply additive to final diet effects. Final diet universally affected all indices and interacted with sex. Low-N final diets increased RCR ( approximately 41%) and decreased AD (14-18%) but unexpectedly increased ECD (21-24%) and RGR ( approximately 36%). Females generally had higher performance than males on the low-N diets but often only matched males on the high-N diets. Low-N initial diets extended larval development times ( approximately 7-26%) and lowered growth rates (6-24%) to the sixth instar, depending on duration of diet exposure, but did not affect total growth achieved by the start of the sixth instar.  相似文献

Adaptation of the gypsy moth to an unsuitable host plant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The pattern of adaptation with regard to life history traits and traits thought to be important in feeding habits of caterpillars in two populations of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.; Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) originating from the locust tree (Robinia pseudoacacia; Fabaceae) and oak (Quercus petrea; Fagaceae) forests were investigated in the laboratory. The Robinia population has experienced unsuitable locust tree leaves as an exclusive food resource for more than 40 years. Since Quercus species are the principal host plants of the gypsy moth, the specific objectives of this study have been to measure the extent of differentiation between ancestral and derived populations in several life history traits (egg-to-adult viability, duration of larval and pupal stages, and pupal weight) and nutritional indices – relative growth rate (RGR), relative consumption rate (RCR), assimilation efficiency (AD), gross growth efficiency (ECI), and net growth efficiency (ECD). Significant differences between the Quercus and Robinia populations were detected in pupal duration, RGR, RCR, and AD. The presence of a significant population × host interaction in traits such as preadult viability, duration of pupal stage, RGR, and ECI suggests that adaptation of the gypsy moth to the unsuitable host might be ongoing. Using a full-sib design, we screened for genetic variation in life history traits within both populations, and examined the genetic correlations of performance across oak and locust leaves within both populations. The genetic variances for analyzed life history traits were lower under conditions that are commonly encountered in nature. Our data show that positive cross-host genetic correlations preponderate within both populations.  相似文献

The effects of nutrition may have subtantial impact on insect evolution by shaping different components of phenotypes. The key to undestanding this evolutionary process is to know how nutritional condition affects additive and nonadditive components of the phenotype. However, this is poorly understood in outbreaking insects. We investigated the additive and nonadditive variation present in food utilization traits in spruce budworm individuals subjected to chronic nutritional stress. A total of 160 full‐sib families of spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) were raised under laboratory conditions, feeding on 2 diets (high and low energy) during 3 generations. Variables tested were pupal mass, consumption rate (RCR), growth rate (RGR), approximate digestibility (AD), the efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) and the efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI). Our results show that all traits tested presented a high percentage of nonadditive effects that modulate phenotype expression. We found a significant impact of family × diet interaction on pupal mass, RGR and ECD. Furthermore, these traits exhibited the greatest heritability. There was no evidence of presence of maternal effects. The results revealed that food utilization traits may evolve through epigenetics effects, such as phenotypic plasticity. This information can be used by modellers to improve forecast of spruce budworm population dynamics.  相似文献

Standard gravimetric technique was used to assess the effect of induced resistance in soybean on the consumption and utilization of food by the Mexican bean beetle (MBB), Epilachna varivestis, and the soybean looper (SBL), Pseudoplusia includens. Induced resistance had significant retarding effects on the development and growth of both SBL and MBB. SBL fed leaves of previously injured soybean plants had a 8.5% longer developmental time through the entire larval stage and a 10.4% lower pupal weight than larvae fed leaves from uninjured plants. MBB fed on leaves from previously injured plants through the first three instars had a 9.1% longer developmental time and a 16.5% lower final weight than those fed on leaves from unijured plants. Induced resistance showed no significant effect on total food consumed by either SBL or MBB. Nutritional indices including relative consumption rate (RCR), relative growth rate (RGR), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), approximate digestibility (AD), and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) were calculated on dry weight measurements. In general, induced resistance had greater impacts on the performance of MBB than on that of SBL.
Résumé Une technique gravimétrique uniforme a été utilisée pour mesurer l'effet de la résistance induite du soja et la consommation et l'utilisation d'aliments par E. varivestis (Coléop.: Coccinellidae) et P. includens (Lepid.: Noctuidae). La résistance induite a significativement retardé la croissance et le développement des 2 insectes. La consommation de feuilles déjà abîmées a prolongé de 8.5% la durée du développement de P. includens et a réduit de 10.4% le poids des chrysalides. La consommation de feuilles de soja abîmées pendant les 3 premiers stades d'E. varivestis a prolongé le développement de 9.1% et a réduit de 16.5% le poids des nymphes. La résistance induite n'a pas provoqué une modification significative de la quantité de feuilles de soja abîmées chez les 2 insectes. Les indices de nutrition, comprenant le taux de consommation relative (RCR), le taux de croissance relative (RGR), l'efficacité de transformation de l'aliment ingéré (ECI), la digestibilité approchée (AD) et l'efficacité de conversion de l'aliment digéré (ECD), ont été calculés à partir des poids secs. En général, la résistance induite a eu des effets plus nets sur les performances d'E. varivestis que de P. includens.

Abstract

This study compared the nutritional indices in third instar female nymphs of the tropical grasshopper, Poecilocerus bmtonius, after feeding on Calotropis procera or wheat seedling. Analysis of the main and interactive effects of feeding on C. procera indicates that nymph performance was not affected by the cardenolides present in C. procera. The rate of consumption and assimilation on C. procerawas higher when compared with that of wheat seedlings and weight gain of the nymphs on C. procera was correlated to higher assimilation. The relative consumption rate (RCR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were significantly higher in nymphs fed on C. procera than in those fed on wheat seedlings. Feeding on wheat seedlings significantly reduced the approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD). Feeding on wheat seedlings resulted in 60% mortality of nymphs before moulting to the fourth instar stage. The nutritional indices were also estimated after feeding on C. procera only by fourth instar nymphs.  相似文献

Some statistical problems are added to the growing list of cautionary tales regarding the use of the conventional, ratio-based nutritional indices (RCR, RGR, ECI, AD and ECD). Analysis of ratios is based on the, probably unrealistic, assumption of an isometric relationship between denominator and numerator variables. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) makes less restrictive assumptions, and additionally provides important information about the data which is lost by using ratio variables. We demonstrate, using computer-generated data sets, some of the pitfalls of statistical analysis of ratios and illustrate how these may be avoided using ANCOVA. Some possible consequences of such statistical iniquities for biological interpretations are discussed.  相似文献

Over 80% of the values of approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of assimilated food to biomass (ECD) and efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) calculated using energy terms are greater than the corresponding dry weight (DW) values, based on data for over 65 species (38 studies; number of comparative values: AD=139, ECD=128 and ECI=169). Largest positive differences (energy > DW values) are 30 (AD, ECD) and 24 (ECI) percentage points and largest negative differences (energy < DW values) are 9 (AD), 11 (ECD) and 8 (ECI) percentage points. These differences generally are least for ECI (71% of the differences fall between 0 and +5 percentage points), and AD (68%), followed by ECD (only 47% fall between 0 and +5), and they may vary with temperature, food and other factors. The differences tend to increase (esp. for ECD and ECI) when comparing later with earlier instars. Energy > DW efficiency values are commonly expected for AD because of the generally greater energy content of food than feces, and for ECD and ECI because of the generally greater energy content of insect biomass than ingested and assimilated food. Deviations from predicted differences in surveyed literature data are discussed in terms of possible methodological sources of error.

The effect of essential oil of Satureja hortensis L. on food consumption, biochemical compounds and digestive and detoxification enzymes activity of lesser mulberry pyralid, Glyphodes pyloalis Walker was investigated. The percentage of feeding inhibition was dose dependent. The S. hortensis essential oil exhibited a significant antifeedant activity at the highest concentration used. The feeding indices such as efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), relative growth rate (RGR) and relative consumption rate (RCR) were decreased compared with the control in fifth instar larvae, while approximate digestibility (AD) index increased significantly. Results showed significant decreases in the amount of protein, lipid, carbohydrates and the activity level of α-amylase enzyme in treated larvae with S. hortensis essential oil. The activity level of detoxifying enzymes such as esterase and glutathione S-transferase were significantly affected by S. hortensis essential oil. The results of this study show high deterrence and antifeedant activity of this essential oil which deserves consideration in integrated pest management program.  相似文献

  • 1 The effect of tannins and monoterpenes on the development, mortality and food utilization of spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was investigated under laboratory conditions using an artificial diet. Tannins were extracted from balsam fir foliage of thinned and unthinned stands to reproduce stand thinning related variations in tannins. A mixture of synthetic monoterpenes was utilized to simulate the concentration found in young and old balsam fir trees.
  • 2 Longer development time and lower pupal weight were observed for insects fed on diets with a lower nitrogen concentration and a higher tannin concentration (unthinned treatment). Tannins induced higher insect mortality at a low nitrogen concentration compared with the diet with a higher nitrogen concentration.
  • 3 Approximate digestibility was higher for larvae fed on diets with high concentrations of nitrogen at both low and high concentrations of tannins. Efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) decreased with an increase in tannin concentration. Tannins reduced both the relative consumption and growth rate (RCR and RGR).
  • 4 Monoterpenes increased spruce budworm mortality and this mortality reached almost 50% under concentrations of monoterpene typical of the young trees compared with 20% under monoterpene concentrations found in old trees.
  • 5 A higher digestibility was observed for larvae fed on diet with a higher concentration of monoterpenes, whereas efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), ECD, RCR, and RGR decreased with an increase in monoterpenes in the diet.
  • 6 The results obtained in the present study are consistent with the defensive role of secondary compounds such as tannins and monoterpenes in the spruce budworm–balsam fir system.

Repellent, antifeedant and toxic effect of crude hexane extract of Ageratum conyzoides were investigated against Helicoverpa armigera. In orientation bioassay, the extract exhibited dose-dependent repellency against neonates. Extract significantly increased the mortality and decreased growth of different larval stages when administrated orally in artificial diet. EC50 value was at 0.11% for larval growth inhibition. Toxicity of the extract was manifested by high mortality of first instar larvae after 7 days of feeding on diet containing 0.05–0.4% of extract with LC50 of 0.17%. Under choice bioassay, extract showed strong antifeedant activity against fifth instar larvae with DI50 of 0.21%. In nutritional bioassay, extract significantly reduced RCR, RGR, ECI and ECD of fifth instar larvae with increased AD. When RGR were plotted against RCR, the growth efficiency of larvae fed on treated diet was significantly lower than the control fed larvae suggesting the antifeedant and toxic effect of extract.  相似文献

Two-year-old beech seedlings were kept from germination to bioassays with Lymantria dispar under the following conditions: ambient CO2/low N, elevated CO2/low N, ambient CO2/elevated N, and elevated CO2/elevated N. The effect of these growing conditions of the trees on the performance of the defoliator L. dispar was studied 2 years after initiating the tree cultivation. The developmental success of third-instar larvae of L. dispar was characterized by the weight gained, percentage of weight gain, relative growth rate (RGR), relative consumption rate (RCR), and efficiency of conversion of ingested food into body substance (ECI). Contrary to our expectations, additional N-fertilization did not increase and elevated CO2 did not delay larval growth rate. However, the environmental treatments of the beech seedlings were found to affect the larval performance. Larvae consumed significantly higher amounts of foliage (RCR) on beech trees under controlled conditions (ambient CO2 and low N) compared to those under elevated CO2 and enhanced N. The opposite was true for ECI. The lowest efficacy to convert consumed food to body substance was observed under control conditions and the highest when the larvae were kept on beech trees grown under elevated CO2 and additional N-fertilization. These opposite effects resulted in the weight gain-based parameters (absolute growth, percentage of growth, and RGR) of the gypsy moth larvae remaining unaffected. The results indicate that the gypsy moth larvae are able to change their ECI and RCR to obtain a specific growth rate. This is discussed as an adaptation to specific food qualities.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to assess, through consumption and utilization of natural food measurements, whether mulberry cultivars, Morus spp., could be recommended to rear the silkworm, Bombyx mori L., in a commercial scale. The mulberry cultivars Miura (standard), Korin and Tailandesa and the hybrids FM 3/3, FM 86, SK 1 and SK 4 were tested. Seventy five fifth-instar commercial hybrid larvae were individualized in gerbox? unities and maintained in a rearing room (25 ± 3oC and 80 ± 10% RH).The mulberry leaves of each of the five cultivars used to feed the silkworm larvae were submitted to bromatological analysis. The dry weight of larvae at the beginning and at the end of the fifth instar, the food consumed and the feces eliminated were recorded to determine the following indexes: relative consumption rate (RCR), relative metabolic rate (RMR), relative growth rate (RGR), approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), metabolic cost (MC). The bromatological composition analysis of mulberry leaf cultivars revealed that the hybrid SK 4 presented superior nutritional quality compared to the standard cultivar Miura, due to its higher content in crude protein and ethereal extract, and lower detergent fiber content. The hybrid SK 4 was the most adequate food to the silkworm larvae because it was ingested in small amounts, thus providing good digestibility to the larvae, low metabolic cost, good growth rate and one of the highest efficiencies in the conversion of the ingested food and ingested and digested in biomass.  相似文献

采用重量法研究了砂地柏Sabina vulgaris Ant.果实乙醇提取物、鬼臼毒素和脱氧鬼臼毒素等3种植物源拒食性物质在AFC30、AFC50及AFC80剂量处理下对粘虫Mythimna separata幼虫生长发育和食物利用的影响。结果表明,3种供试物质对粘虫幼虫正常的生长发育历期具有明显的延缓作用,可显著延长试虫龄期。2种鬼臼类物质在处理期内均可造成粘虫幼虫相对生长率和相对代谢率的明显降低,并且表现出与剂量的相关性,但停止处理3~5天后,又都能恢复到正常水平;3种物质对粘虫幼虫食物近似消化率没有明显影响。处理期内食物转化率和利用率显著增加,停止处理后,均可恢复到正常水平; 不同物质处理间存在一定差异,同一物质不同处理剂量间差异不明显。  相似文献
