Studies of environmental factors that stimulate asexual reproduction in the planarian,Dugesia dorotocephala (Woodworth), feeding onCulex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say revealed that unchlorinated well and irrigation waters were superior to buffered aqueous media for fission. Constant darkness also was superior to constant light; although, a 12/12-hr photoperiod also allowed good asexual reproduction. Fluctuating dissolved oxygen levels between 3 and 8 ppm apparently stimulated fission. A coarse gravel substrate was superior to smooth plastic. Daily temperature increases of 0.8°C/day between 22.5° and 28.9°C also stimulated fission. Fission rates decreased with increased densities ofD. dorotocephala in unfiltered aquaria, contrary to earlier results obtained in filtered aquaria. The addition of the ostracods,Cypridopsis vidua (Müller) andPhysocypria pustulosa Sharpe, to a diet of mosquito larvae increased fission. Brine shrimp (Artemia sp.) and red tubifex worms (Tubifex sp.) were not as suitable as mosquito larvae for food, apparently because the planaria had difficulty capturing these prey.D. dorotocephala was tolerant of salinities between 250–1,000 ppm, but feeding activity was impaired above and below this range. Mechanical sectioning of individuals was not a practical method for mass production; although if sectioning were coupled with media filtration, some reproductive acceleration might result.

The effects ofDugesia dorotocephala (Woodworth), a proven predator of aquatic Diptera, on 17 species of nontarget aquatic organisms were determined under controlled laboratory conditions. Only 3 of the nontarget organisms,Aeolosoma sp.,Cyclops sp. andToxorhynchites amboinensis (Doleschall), were significantly affected byD. dorotocephala. No significant difference in prey preference was found when planaria were maintained together with the target organism,Aedes aegypti, and the 3 adversely affected nontarget organisms. Results of this initial evaluation indicate thatD. dorotocephala is potentially safe to integrate as a biological control with most nontarget aquatic organisms tested. The genetic differentiation between the members of the Dugesia (Girardia) dorotocephala group was analyzed by means of multilocus electrophoresis, and comared to that of another planarian secies, D. tahitiensis, also belonging to the subgenus Girardia. The species examined were: D. dorotocephala s.s (2n = 16), D. arizonensis (2n = 8), D. jenkinsae (2n = 8), and the above mentioned D. tahitiensis (2n = 16). The former three species inhabit North America, and show different proportion of fissiparous and sexual individuals; the latter species inhabits Polynesia and is fully asexual. A total of 11 enzyme loci were genetically analyzed: Mdh-1, Mdh-2, Zdh-1, Idh-2, G3pdh, Got-1, Ck, Pgm-2, Ada, Mpi, and Gpi. Low values of observed mean heterozygosity per locus (Ho) were found in the populations studied, ranging from 0 to 0.18 (average 0.08. In asexual populations (except that of D. tahitiensis) fixed heterozygosity was observered in all the individuals for 1 or 2 loci. The genetic divergence between the species examined is very high, with many loci showing discriminating alleles in different taxa (Nei's genetic distance varies from 0.871 to 1.759). The populations of D. dorotocehala s.s., on the contrary, appear to be genetically quite homogenous average D= 0.019), and the genetic distance values are apparently unrelated to their geographic location and to their way of reproduction. The genetic distance between D. tahitiensis, a species not included in the D. dorotocephala group and D. dorotocephala s.s. is 1.314 and hence similar to the D value between two members of;he dorotocephala group: D. dorotocephala and D. jenkinsae (D = 1.303). The genetic relationships among the populations studied were established by UPGMA cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. The descendence of the North American species with 2n = 8 from a dorotocephala-like ancestor with 2n = 16 is considered. It is suggested that the latter, as well as a tahitiensis-like line, also having 2n = 16, have originated from a common ancestor by geographic isolation.  相似文献

The planarian,Dugesia dorotocephala (Woodworth) demonstrated a capacity to regulate two experimental host groups,Culex mosquitoes and chironomid midges, at low densities in south California. Inoculations in 1974 of 5 mature planaria/m2 of water surface in flood control settling basins produced 82.4%, 60.6% and 63.7% chironomid control in August, September and October, respectively. Laboratory tests produced 86.7% larval kill in 24 hrs and 100% in 48 hrs. In rice paddy habitatsCulex tarsalis Coquillett andC. peus Speiser were reduced by 79.3%, 75.0% and 77.3% in August, September and October, respectively, by planaria inoculations of 25/m2 of water surface. A tendency to prefer later instars was indicated.Dugesia were observed to persist in all treated replicates through the study period; and although exact densities could not be estimated, at least a quadrupling of their population appeared to have occurred in 4 months following inoculations in June and July. Planaria offer practical and possibly superior alternatives to chemical pesticides in the control of some aquatic Diptera.  相似文献

Asexual reproduction of the symbiotic sea anemone Aiptasia pulchella (Carlgren, 1943) was studied in the context of energy budgets determined under a variety of light and feeding conditions. Continuous darkness significantly increased rates of pedal laceration (the method of asexual reproduction), while different feeding rates had no significant effect. Digestive assimilation efficiency averaged 63% for whole brine shrimp, and conversion efficiencies (assimilated energy into biomass) averaged 31%. There were no significant differences between the conversion efficiencies of energy obtained from light or food. The index of reproductive effort (RE) for pedal laceration was very low, ranging from 0.004 to 0.044. This low RE associated with a substantial rate of asexual reproduction may, in part, explain the widespread success of certain sea anemones.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction is essential for the life cycle of most angiosperms. However, pseudovivipary is an important reproductive strategy in some grasses. In this mode of reproduction, asexual propagules are produced in place of sexual reproductive structures. However, the molecular mechanism of pseudovivipary still remains a mystery. In this work, we found three naturally occurring mutants in rice, namely, phoenix (pho), degenerative palea (dep), and abnormal floral organs (afo). Genetic analysis of them indicated that the stable pseudovivipary mutant pho was a double mutant containing both a Mendelian mutation in DEP and a non-Mendelian mutation in AFO. Further map-based cloning and microarray analysis revealed that dep mutant was caused by a genetic alteration in OsMADS15 while afo was caused by an epigenetic mutation in OsMADS1. Thus, OsMADS1 and OsMADS15 are both required to ensure sexual reproduction in rice and mutations of them lead to the switch of reproductive habit from sexual to asexual in rice. For the first time, our results reveal two regulators for sexual and asexual reproduction modes in flowering plants. In addition, our findings also make it possible to manipulate the reproductive strategy of plants, at least in rice.  相似文献

In many aquatic animals, predator avoidance can be stimulated by chemical cues, including those released by injured prey (alarm cues). Alarm cues of both conspecific and heterospecific origin have been identified within several fish taxa, where phylogenetic conservation of the cue-response complex is common. Turbellarian flatworms (planaria) are among the simplest animals known to respond to chemical cues released by injured conspecifics. We examined how two locally sympatric planaria species respond to conspecific and heterospecific chemical cues using macerated tissue suspensions. Brown (Girardia tigrina) and black (Dugesia dorotocephala) planaria both exhibited avoidance behavior when presented conspecific cues. Despite a significant twofold difference in body size (black > brown), stimulus prepared from a single (1×) individual of either species elicited avoidance. Increasing brown planaria cue concentration by macerating two individuals (2×) produced a significant increase in conspecific avoidance. Heterospecific stimuli produced asymmetric results. Black planaria avoided the brown planaria stimulus, but only in the higher concentration (2×) trials. Brown planaria did not consistently exhibit avoidance of the black planaria stimulus and some brown subjects approached and consumed black planarian tissues. Our results expand the demonstrated occurrence of alarm cues among planaria and suggest that avoidance behavior can be mediated by multiple environmental and intrinsic factors in freshwater Turbellaria.  相似文献

For plants with mixed reproductive capabilities, asexual reproduction is more frequent in rare species and is considered a strategy for persistence when sexual recruitment is limited. We investigate whether asexual reproduction contributes to the persistence of two co-occurring, rare sedges that both experience irregular seed set and if their differing geographic distributions have a role in the relative contribution of clonality. Genotypic richness was high (R=0.889±0.02) across the clustered populations of Lepidosperma sp. Mt Caudan and, where detected, clonal patches were small, both in ramet numbers (⩽3 ramets/genet) and physical size (1.3±0.1 m). In contrast, genotypic richness was lower in the isolated L. sp. Parker Range populations, albeit more variable (R=0.437±0.13), with genets as large as 17 ramets and up to 5.8 m in size. Aggregated clonal growth generated significant fine-scale genetic structure in both species but to a greater spatial extent and with additional genet-level structure in L. sp. Parker Range that is likely due to restricted seed dispersal. Despite both species being rare, asexual reproduction clearly has a more important role in the persistence of L. sp. Parker Range than L. sp. Mt Caudan. This is consistent with our prediction that limitations to sexual reproduction, via geographic isolation to effective gene exchange, can lead to greater contributions of asexual reproduction. These results demonstrate the role of population isolation in affecting the balance of alternate reproductive modes and the contextual nature of asexual reproduction in rare species.  相似文献

Daphnia (water fleas) are small crustaceans that undergo an unusual switch from asexual to sexual reproduction that is dependent on environmental conditions. In this study, a senescence-associated protein (SAP) from the common freshwater species Daphnia pulex was cloned using primers based on homologous sequences and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Real-time PCR was employed to quantify the expression of D. pulex SAP (DpSAP) in individual organisms. The role of DpSAP in the reproductive transformation was further investigated in both parthenogenetic and sexual females by using digoxin-labeled SAP RNA probes and RNA whole-mount in situ hybridization. DpSAP was more highly expressed in sexual females, indicating a role in growth and reproduction. Cellular localization studies using RNA whole-mount in situ hybridization showed specific expression in the second tentacle joints. These expression patterns suggest an important role for DpSAP in the reproductive transformation of D. pulex.  相似文献

Among echinoderms, asexual reproduction by fission occurs in few species. This strategy is considered a temporary response to stressful conditions and usually alternates with sexual reproduction events; thus, monoclonal populations are extremely rare. The occurrence of a single-clone population of the starfish Coscinasterias tenuispina at Llançà (NW Mediterranean) allowed us to study intra-clonal variation of the reproductive cycle during a two-year study. The few developed gonads (all male) were found in winter months, coinciding with the minimum photoperiod (ρ = ?0.82; P < 0.001) and lowest temperatures (ρ = ?0.75; P < 0.001), only in best-fed individuals, indicating that food availability influences individual ability for gonad development. Fissiparity happened throughout all the sampled period, but its rate increased with warm temperatures (ρ = 0.68; P < 0.0001). In contrast to what has been reported in other species, no correlation between fission rates and population density was found. The population was maintained over time by asexual reproduction and remained monoclonal. Although sexual reproduction has probably not occurred in this all-male population for a long time, the ability to yearly produce mature gonads is retained by some individuals, indicating that potential to reproduce sexually may be preserved, even in the case of strictly asexual populations.  相似文献

The general prevalence of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction among organisms testifies to the evolutionary benefits of recombination, such as accelerated adaptation to changing environments and elimination of deleterious mutations. Documented instances of asexual reproduction in groups otherwise dominated by sexual reproduction challenge evolutionary biologists to understand the special circumstances that might confer an advantage to asexual reproductive strategies. Here we report one such instance of asexual reproduction in the ants. We present evidence for obligate thelytoky in the asexual fungus-gardening ant, Mycocepurus smithii, in which queens produce female offspring from unfertilized eggs, workers are sterile, and males appear to be completely absent. Obligate thelytoky is implicated by reproductive physiology of queens, lack of males, absence of mating behavior, and natural history observations. An obligate thelytoky hypothesis is further supported by the absence of evidence indicating sexual reproduction or genetic recombination across the species'' extensive distribution range (Mexico-Argentina). Potential conflicting evidence for sexual reproduction in this species derives from three Mycocepurus males reported in the literature, previously regarded as possible males of M. smithii. However, we show here that these specimens represent males of the congeneric species M. obsoletus, and not males of M. smithii. Mycocepurus smithii is unique among ants and among eusocial Hymenoptera, in that males seem to be completely absent and only queens (and not workers) produce diploid offspring via thelytoky. Because colonies consisting only of females can be propagated consecutively in the laboratory, M. smithii could be an adequate study organism a) to test hypotheses of the population-genetic advantages and disadvantages of asexual reproduction in a social organism and b) inform kin conflict theory. For a Portuguese translation of the abstract, please see Abstract S1.  相似文献

It is necessary to understand how environmental changes affect plant fitness to predict survival of a species, but this knowledge is scarce for lichens and complicated by their formation of sexual and asexual reproductive structures. Are the presence and number of reproductive structures in Lobaria pulmonaria, a threatened lichen, dependent on thallus size, and is their formation sequential? Does any size-dependence and sequential formation vary along a climate gradient? Generalized linear mixed models were used to explore the effect of environmental predictors on the size and presence/abundance of each reproductive structure and to determine the probability of a given-sized thallus to develop any reproductive structure. The largest individuals are more likely to develop reproductive structures, and the lichen uses a mixed strategy of early asexual reproduction and late sexual. Macro and microclimatic variables also influenced reproductive capacity. Relationships among climate conditions and lichen size and reproductive capacity can compromise the future viability of the species in the most southern populations of Europe.  相似文献

This paper examines the cost of meiosis in a species with an alternation of sexual and asexual generations (e.g. Daphnia), by means of calculations of the survival probabilities of mutant genes causing patterns of wholly asexual reproduction. It is shown that the survival probabilities of such mutations are lower with an alternation of sexual and asexual generations than with an initial population which reproduces exclusively sexually. The survival probabilities decrease as the number of asexual generations within each reproductive cycle increases. It is argued that these results imply a lower than usual cost of meiosis when there is an alternation of generations, and that asexual reproduction cannot simply be equated with vegetative growth of a single multicellular organism.  相似文献

Populations of Thrips tabaci are known to have two sympatric but genetically isolated reproductive modes, arrhenotoky (sexual reproduction) and thelytoky (asexual reproduction). Herein, we report behavioral, ecological and genetic studies to determine whether there is gene flow between arrhenotokous and thelytokous T. tabaci. We did not detect significant preference by arrhenotokous males to mate with females of a particular reproductive mode, nor did we detect significant behavioral differences between arrhenotokous males mated with arrhenotokous or thelytokous females in their pre-copulation, copulation duration and mating frequency. Productive gene transfer resulting from the mating between the two modes was experimentally confirmed. Gene transfer from arrhenotokous T. tabaci to thelytokous T. tabaci was further validated by confirmation of the passage of the arrhenotokous male-originated nuclear gene (histone H3 gene) allele to the F2 generation. These behavioral, ecological and genetic studies confirmed gene transfer from the sexual arrhenotokous mode to the asexual thelytokous mode of T. tabaci in the laboratory. These results demonstrate that asexual T. tabaci populations may acquire genetic variability from sexual populations, which could offset the long-term disadvantage of asexual reproduction.  相似文献

Asexual Dugesia dorotocephala, collected from a new site several miles northwest of Fort Collins, Colorado, appeared similar, at the time of collection, to ones collected from other sites in the same general locale. However, these exhibited marked differences in the more crowded conditions of laboratory culture: abnormally long, 30–50 mm specimens, seemingly unable to fission, developed. Since previous studies of asexual D. dorotocephala had revealed an inhibitory effect of cohorts on fissioning (Best et al., 1969, 1974, 1975; Pigon et al., 1974), experiments were conducted with this new strain to ascertain the effect of population density (group size) on fissioning incidence. Results are described which show that this inhibitory effect of cohorts on fissioning is exaggerated in this new strain.  相似文献

The gene doublesex (dsx) has shown deep conservation in the sex determination in many organisms. Environmental stimuli initiate a switch in the reproductive strategy of Daphnia pulex from asexual to sexual reproduction; however, occasionally, changes in environmental conditions will not lead to this transition. So study genetic responses to environmental stimuli and the molecular basis for the switch of reproductive stages are urgently needed. Therefore, we isolated and sequenced a D. pulex doublesex1 gene (Dpdsx1) and analyzed its expression and location by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and whole-mount in situ hybridization in D. pulex during different stages of reproduction. The predicted amino acid sequence has 335 amino acids that contained one DM domain and one dimerization domain, which is characteristic of insect orthologs of Dsx. Real-time PCR showed that Dpdsx1 expression decreased significantly (P?<?0.05) in different reproductive stages in the following order: male, parthenogenetic female, ephippial female, resting egg, and juvenile female. Whole-mount in situ hybridization revealed that Dpdsx1 is expressed in the first antennae, first thoracic limb and compound eye in males, whereas expression levels in the corresponding sites of parthenogenetic and ephippial females were relatively weak. Dpdsx1 could not be detected in the gonads of males or ephippial and parthenogenetic females. Taken together, these different reproductive stages’ and sex specific expression patterns are regulated temporally and spatially. We speculate that Dpdsx1 may involve in switching different stages of reproduction and in sexual differentiation in D. pulex.  相似文献

The filamentous fungus Aspergillus fumigatus is the most prevalent airborne fungal pathogen causing severe and usually fatal invasive aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients. This fungus produces a large number of small hydrophobic asexual spores called conidia as the primary means of reproduction, cell survival, propagation, and infectivity. The initiation, progression, and completion of asexual development (conidiation) is controlled by various regulators that govern expression of thousands of genes associated with formation of the asexual developmental structure conidiophore, and biogenesis of conidia. In this review, we summarize key regulators that directly or indirectly govern conidiation in this important pathogenic fungus. Better understanding these developmental regulators may provide insights into the improvement in controlling both beneficial and detrimental aspects of various Aspergillus species.  相似文献

The green hydra, Hydra viridissima, has three sexes: hermaphrodite, male, and female. I investigated the reproductive strategies of the green hydra and the relationship between asexual budding and sexual reproduction. The proportion of mature individuals in the asexually reproducing population increased with increasing temperature. Sexual reproduction did not interrupt asexual budding in hermaphrodites or males; sexual reproduction did interrupt asexual budding in females. Sexual reproduction also resulted in exponential population growth during the reproductive season. The number of asexual buds on each parental individual was positively correlated with the parental individual size in asexual individuals and in males. The same positive correlation was found between the number of testicles and the size of males. These correlations reflect a common tendency in asexual and sexual reproduction: larger parental individuals have a greater number of propagules or gametes. No correlation was found between size and buds or size and gonads in hermaphrodites; hermaphrodites had at most one asexual bud and were significantly larger than males, females, and asexual individuals. The larger size of hermaphrodites supports the hypothesis that producing both female and male gonads is more energetically costly than producing only one type of gamete (gonochorism).  相似文献

Important questions remain about the long-term survival and adaptive significance of eukaryotic asexual lineages. Numerous papers dealing with sex advantages still continued to compare parthenogenetic populations versus sexual populations arguing that sex demonstrates a better fitness. Because asexual lineages do not possess any recombination mechanisms favoring rapid changes in the face of severe environmental conditions, they should be considered as an evolutionary dead-end. Nevertheless, reviewing literature dealing with asexual reproduction, it is possible to draw three stimulating conclusions. (1) Asexual reproduction in eukaryotes considerably differs from prokaryotes which experience recombination but neither meiosis nor syngamy. Recombination and meiosis would be a driving force for sexual reproduction. Eukaryotes should therefore be considered as a continuum of sexual organisms that are more or less capable (and sometimes incapable) of sexual reproduction. (2) Rather than revealing ancestral eukaryotic forms, most known lineages of asexual eukaryotes have lost sex due to a genomic conflict affecting their sexual capacity. Thus, it could be argued that hybridization is a major cause of their asexuality. Asexuality may have evolved as a reproductive mechanism reducing conflict within organisms. (3) It could be proposed that, rather than being generalists, parthenogenetic hybrid lineages could be favored when exploiting peculiar restricted ecological niches, following the “frozen niche variation” model. Although hybrid events may result in sex loss, probably caused by genomic conflict, asexual hybrids could display new original adaptive traits, and the rapid colonization of environments through clonal reproduction could favor their long-term survival, leading to evolutionary changes and hybrid speciation. Examination of the evolutionary history of asexual lineages reveals that evolutionary processes act through transitional stages in which even very small temporary benefits may be enough to counter the expected selective disadvantages.  相似文献
