Leucocyte lysates from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss showed an iron‐binding activity that was retained even if the samples were exposed to an acid pH (4·5). Iron‐binding activity of leucocyte supernatants was enhanced by the presence of 1 μg ml−1 phorbol‐12‐myristate‐13‐acetate in the cell medium.  相似文献

Inter‐individual differences in rates of routine (non‐feeding) metabolism and growth were evaluated in young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua . Rates of O2 consumption, CO2 production and ammonia (TAN) excretion were measured in 64, 25–43 mm standard length ( L S) YOY growing at different rates (0·27–0·47 mm day−1) in a common rearing tank. Parameter rates ( y ) increased allometrically ( y = a·Mb ) with increasing body mass ( M ) with b ‐values for O2 production, CO2 consumption and TAN excretion equal to 0·81, 0·89 and 0·56, respectively. In some cases, residuals from these regressions were significantly negatively correlated to fish growth rate. In no cases did residuals of parameter rates increase with increasing growth rate. These data suggest that, during unfed periods, relatively fast‐growing fish were more metabolically efficient than slower‐growing fish from the same cohort. The fish condition factor, derived from     , also significantly decreased with increasing growth rate. Results indicated differences in both the rates of routine energy loss and the patterns of growth allocation among YOY Atlantic cod. Since these physiological attributes were positively correlated with growth rate, they may be indicative of 'survivors' in field populations.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were followed from egg to smoltification using genetic analysis to identify individuals and to link observations from pre‐ and post first feeding. Egg size and hatch timing significantly influenced alevin size at first feed but neither egg size, hatch timing or alevin sizes were correlated to size, condition factor or smolt status post first feed. In a hatchery environment the potential advantage gained by early hatching, larger alevin does not persist after first feeding. Different physiological and genetic complexes appear to influence growth in these two distinct phases of the Atlantic salmon's life‐cycle.  相似文献

Environmental stresses dramatically affect plant survival and productivity. Because plants are immobile, presumably different strategies are required for protection against transient stresses. Under stress, plants synthesize specific proteins, and their accumulation has a role in protecting the tissue from possible damage. An increasing number of studies show the existence of cross‐tolerance in plants: Exposure of tissue to moderate stress conditions often induces resistance to other stresses. Many varied mechanisms explaining the phenomenon of cross‐tolerance have been proposed, and they often, but not always, suggest that specific proteins are induced by one kind of stress and are involved in the protection against other kinds. Although various cross‐protections have been demonstrated in a number of plants, a common mechanism has not been found. This review discusses heat‐shock proteins and their possible roles in protecting the plant under heat and other stresses.  相似文献

Ultrasonic telemetry was used to compare post‐release survival and movements of Atlantic sharpnose sharks Rhizoprionodon terraenovae in a coastal area of the north‐east Gulf of Mexico. Ten fish were caught with standardized hook‐and‐line gear during June to October 1999. Atlantic sharpnose sharks were continuously tracked after release for periods of 0·75 to 5·90 h and their positions recorded at a median interval of 9 min. Individual rate of movement was the mean of all distance and time measurements for each fish. Mean ± s.e . individual rate of movement was 0·45 ± 0·06 total lengths per second (LT s?1) and ranged from 0·28 to 0·92 LT s?1 over all fish. Movement patterns did not differ between jaw and internally hooked Atlantic sharpnose sharks. Individual rate of movement was inversely correlated with bottom water temperature at capture (r2 = 0·52, P ≤ 0·05). No consistent direction in movement was detected for Atlantic sharpnose sharks after release, except that they avoided movement towards shallower areas. Capture‐release survival was high (90%), with only one fish not surviving, i.e. this particular fish stopped movement for a period of 10 min. Total rate of movement was total distance over total time (m min?1) for each Atlantic sharpnose shark. Mean total rate of movement was significantly higher immediately after release at 21·5 m min?1 over the first 1·5 h of tracking, then decreased to 11·2 m min?1 over 1·5–6 h, and 7·7 m min?1 over 3–6 h (P ≤ 0·002), which suggested initial post‐release stress but quick recovery from capture. Thus, high survival (90%) and quick recovery indicate that the practice of catch‐and‐release would be a viable method to reduce capture mortality for R. terraenovae.  相似文献

Young‐of‐the‐year smelt Osmerus eperlanus in Lake Tuusulanjärvi were examined for Glugea hertwigi cysts. Cysts were visible on smelt in the beginning of August and showed a peak at the end of August. Iron-deficiency-induced acidification is one of the important reactions of plant Fe-deficiency-stress response, but the overall understanding of this reaction is limited. The characteristics of Fe-deficiency-induced acidification of subterranean clover (subclover) (Trifolium brachycalycinum Katzn. and Morley cv. Koala) were studied in this paper. Plants were grown hydroponically under -Fe conditions, and Fe-deficiency-induced acidification was determined using pH-stat, back-titration and chemical equilibrium procedures. Fe-deficiency-induced acidification was undetectable during the first day after Fe-deficiency stress initiation, but the maximum acidification rate was attained by the second day, when plants exhibited visual chlorosis symptoms. The acidification rate was relatively constant with increasing Fe-deficiency chlorosis, suggesting that a critical level of Fe deficiency was needed to trigger acidification, but that once the acidification process was initiated, the intensity of acidification was independent of severity of Fe deficiency. Net H+-release (PR) rate determined using a chemical equilibrium method and net acidity release (AR) rate determined using a back-titration method were practically identical, indicating that Fe-deficiency-induced acidification involved almost entirely the release of free H+, not organic acid. In the assay temperature range of 5 to 35°C, PR rate was highest at about 20°C. Net acidity release rate was almost totally inhibited at pH values ≤4.5 and increased with increasing assay pH up to pH 9. The pH effect occurred within 30 min of incubation initiation, implying that the effect of pH is probably on the activity of H+ transport through the plasma membrane, not on the quantity of responsible protein(s). Cations were required in the incubation solution for Fe-deficiency-induced acidification. Divalent cations in the assay solution resulted in a higher AR rate than monovalent cations, and essential cations resulted in a higher AR rate than non-essential cations, indicating that the relative effectiveness of cations is related to the efficiency of their absorption by plant roots. These results are discussed in relation to their practical significance and the mechanisms of Fe-deficiency-induced acidification.  相似文献

Literature data for 19 populations from 16 different studies of six species of stream‐dwelling salmonids were analysed to test the hypothesis that density‐dependent growth is stronger at low rather than at high population density. Fifteen of 19 populations showed evidence of a significant decrease in growth rate with increasing density. In 11 of these 15 populations, the pattern of density‐dependent growth was better described by a negative power curve than by a linear regression ( i.e . Akaike Information Criterion, AIC linear −  AIC power > 2), whereas only one population was better described by a linear regression than by a negative power curve; three populations were adequately described by both models ( AIC  < 2). In 10 of the 11 populations that were best described by a negative power curve, most of the decrease in growth rate occurred at population densities <1 fish m−2, when space limitation is unlikely. This analysis provides broad support for the hypothesis that density‐dependent growth in stream salmonids occurs primarily at low population densities, probably due to exploitative competition.  相似文献

Body shape of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perch Perca fluviatilis , and number and size of potential predators (perch and pike Esox lucius ) were compared across five lakes in northern Sweden. Body depth and dorsal fin ray length of YOY perch differed between lakes, with high relative body depth and long dorsal fin rays found in the lakes where the number of large piscivores was the highest. The most slender fish were found in the lake where the perch population had the smallest individuals and pike occurred in very low numbers. The average body mass in YOY perch from the two lakes with highest and lowest body depth, respectively, were the same, which indicates a difference between lakes in the relation between growth in length and in depth. Both body depth and fin ray length were correlated with predation risk by pike. Fin ray length was also correlated with number of piscivorous perch. Selection for different body shapes can be caused by different biotic and abiotic factors, singly or in combination, and the results from this study indicates that predation risk is one of these factors affecting body depth and fin ray length in perch.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were infected with sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (0·08 ± 0·007 sea lice g−1) over a period of 4 h. Both infected and non‐infected fish were swim tested in sea water (SW) and fresh water (FW). The ventral aorta of each fish was fitted with a Doppler cuff in order to measure cardiac output, stroke volume and heart rate during swim testing. Blood samples were taken at rest and after exercise. Critical swimming speed of infected fish in SW (2·14 ± 0·08 body lengths, bl s−1) was significantly lower ( P  < 0·05) than infected fish switched to FW (2·81 ± 0·08 bl s−1) and non‐infected fish in SW (2·42 ± 0·04 bl s−1) and FW (2·61 ± 0·08 bl s−1). Cardiac and blood results indicated infected fish exposed to FW did experience stress, but relief from osmotic and ionic distress probably reduces energy expenditure, allowing the increase in performance. As the performance of sea lice‐infected fish improved upon transfer to FW, it is likely that heavily infected salmonids do return to FW to restore compromised osmotic and ionic balance, and remove sea lice in the process.  相似文献

The mean rate of oxygen consumption (routine respiration rate, R R, mg O2 fish−1 h−1), measured for individual or small groups of haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (3–12 cm standard length, L S) maintained for 5 days within flow‐through respiratory chambers at four different temperatures, increased with increasing dry mass ( M D). The relationship between R R and M D was allometric ( R R = α  M b ) with b values of 0·631, 0·606, 0·655 and 0·650 at 5·0, 8·0, 12·0 and 15·0° C, respectively. The effect of temperature ( T ) and M D on mean R R was described by     indicating a Q 10 of 2·27 between 5 and 15° C. Juvenile haddock routine metabolic scope, calculated as the ratio of the mean of highest and lowest deciles of R R measured in each chamber, significantly decreased with temperature such that the routine scope at 15° C was half that at 5° C. The cost of feeding ( R SDA) was c . 3% of consumed food energy, a value half that found for larger gadoid juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Salinity is one of the most widespread causes of plant growth inhibition and reduction of agricultural productivity. Activated oxygen species seem to be implicated in the injury mechanism induced by salt. In our work, the effect of NaCl was studied in chloroplasts from seedlings of two cultivars of Triticum durum Desf., differently sensitive to drought and to heavy metals (cv. Ofanto more tolerant than cv. Adamello). The seedlings were grown for 9 days in Hoagland's no. 2 solution, to which increasing concentrations of NaCl (0, 50 and 100 m M ) were added. The results indicate an involvement of activated oxygen species in the mechanism of cellular toxicity of NaCl and the capability of the seedlings to induce their antioxidant defences. In chloroplasts of both cultivars, NaCl treatment induced a significant increase in ascorbate, even if cv. Ofanto showed the higher response. Ascorbate peroxidases appear to behave differently in the two cultivars in response to NaCl‐induced oxidative stress of chloroplasts. In seedlings of Adamello treated with 50 m M NaCl, a sudden increase in thylakoid‐bound ascorbate peroxidase (tAPX) activity and a decrease in that of stromal ascorbate peroxidase (sAPX) occurred. Differently, in Ofanto, a slight increase of both sAPX and tAPX was induced by NaCl. In both cultivars, three well‐resolved bands of sAPX were found. In chloroplasts of both cultivars, monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) behaved similarly, even if in Adamello a greater decrease of DHAR was shown. The experimental evidence suggested a more marked effect of NaCl stress on Adamello as compared with Ofanto.  相似文献

A total of 10 649 larval and juvenile fishes of 24 species were caught in the drift at Marchfeldkanal, a man‐made side branch of the Danube River near Vienna, Austria, with tubenose goby Proterorhinus marmoratus being the dominant species. Distinct differences in inter‐ and intraspecific drift patterns among different sampling stations along the course of the channel were found. The percentage of the rheophilic and rheoparous ecological guild was highest at the inlet of the channel, where it is directly fed with water from the Danube. For individual species, significant differences in drift densities among sites were found for tubenose goby, barbel Barbus barbus , ide Leuciscus idus , roach Rutilus rutilus and for the two most abundant percids, the pike‐perch Sander lucioperca and zingel Zingel zingel combined. The occurrence of larval and juvenile fishes in the drift was related to certain developmental stages and differed between species and sites. Most species (common bream Abramis brama , bleak Alburnus alburnus , gudgeon species Gobio spp., chub Leuciscus cephalus , ide and roach) occurred with highest densities at the earliest developmental larval stage, but some species ( e.g . common bream and roach) were also found abundantly in drift at later developmental stages. Application of Ivlev's index of electivity as a drift index describing the propensity of the different species to drift, yielded the highest indices for the gudgeon species, common bream and bleak and the lowest for perch Perca fluviatilis , Prussian carp Carassius auratus gibelio and rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus .  相似文献

The physiological and molecular events of ethylene‐induced abscission in mature fruit calyx, laminar and floral abscission zones of cv. Valencia orange were examined. Continuous exposure of fruit explants to 5 µl 1−1 ethylene for 2 to 40 h resulted in marked increases in endo‐1,4‐β‐glucanase (cellulase) and polygalacturonase (PG) activities in calyx abscission zones. Two abscission‐related cellulases and one PG were found. The major peak of cellulase activity corresponded to a pI of 8.0 and molecular weight of 51 kDa, whereas the minor cellulase peak had a pI of 5.5. The abscission polygalacturonase had a pI of 5.5. Calyx abscission zone RNA was amplified with degenerate primers based on sequence of the purified Valencia orange calyx abscission cellulase, and cloned. The two partial cellulase cDNA clones were 59% identical at the nucleotide level. Genomic Southern analysis suggested that Valencia orange contained two groups of cellulase genes. A full‐length cDNA clone from each group was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from ethylene‐induced calyx abscission zone mRNA. Both genes were expressed in ethylene‐induced calyx, laminar and floral abscission zones, but were not expressed in non‐induced abscission zones or mature leaves treated with or without ethylene, young bark or young fruit of Valencia.  相似文献

Fifty‐three one‐sea‐winter Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (45–63 cm L T) were radio‐tagged in the Tana fjord, Barents Sea, in 1995. Thirty‐seven fish (70%) entered the freshwater zone of the River Tana in an average of 3 days after release in the fjord. The migration speeds in the lowest river section below the first riffle area were significantly higher than in the subsequent river section below the second riffle area. Similarly, the observed time spent in the first riffle area was significantly lower than in the next riffle area. The majority of Atlantic salmon entered the river during the hours of high tide and the subsequent ebb tide. In addition, most river entries were recorded around midnight. No effects of river flow on the river entry or migration speed were detected, but the migration speed of Atlantic salmon in both river sections examined was greater at lower temperatures. Twenty‐eight fish (72%) were recaptured in the river, 71% of them with weirs and gillnets, and 29% by rod and line. Over half of the Atlantic salmon (54%) were recaptured within 3 weeks following river entry, and within the first 100 km of the river (56%). The results are discussed in relation to earlier studies on multi‐sea‐winter Atlantic salmon in the River Tana.  相似文献

Female three‐spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus preferred odour stemming from males with a nest over 'neutral' water and odour from males without any nest in an experimental flow channel.
