Summary The relative body water conservation efficiency of two Indian desert gerbil species,Meriones hurrianae (diurnal/crepuscular) andTatera indica (nocturnal), has been examined under near-natural conditons in different seasons.A mean urine osmolarity of 3180 mosmol/l (maximum 4645 mosmol/l) inM. hurrianae and a mean value of 5128 mosmol/l (maximum 7547 mosmol/l) inT. indica have been recorded during summer.Urine osmolarity and urea levels indicated that whileM. hurrianae remain sufficiently hydrated mainly by virtue of their feeding habit,Tatera indica may depend on the relatively higher concentrating capacity of their kidneys.  相似文献

Changes in ovarian follicular kinetics were studied in relation to aging in the Indian skipper frog Rana cyanophlyctis.Age was determined by skeletochronology, by counting the number of growth rings and lines of arrest of growth from the cross sections of 4th phalange of 4th toe. For follicular kinetics study oocytes were counted under binocular using 10% of Bouin’s fixed ovary and they were classified into first growth phase, medium-sized second growth phase, large-sized second growth phase and atretic follicles. Analysis of phalangeal cross sections indicated that frogs ranging 14–54 g in body weight and 4.9–8.9 cm in body size showed 1–7 year rings. Frogs that weighed 14–16 g showed 1 year ring, and contained immature ovaries; those with 18 g body weight had one to two year rings, in which second growth phase oocytes appeared for the first time in the primiparous ovary. Frogs with 20–54 g body weight showed 2–5 year rings in which ovary contained 5–24% of second growth phase oocytes. Further, body weight, body size, ovarian weight, number and size of second growth phase oocytes and total number of oocytes showed a significant (P < 0.05) positive correlation, while, the number of first growth phase and atretic follicles showed a poor correlation with age. The results suggest that in nature, the age of Rana cyanophlyctis ranges between 1–7 years. Phalangeal growth rings are formed annually. Females attain sexual maturity in 2nd year. Frogs with 2–5 years of age may constitute breeding females. Body weight, body size, ovarian mass, number of second growth phase and total oocytes, and egg size increase with age up to 5 years.  相似文献

Summary Fresh, dried and powdered samples of leaf, stem and root of Acalypha indica were subjected to fractional distillation in a soxhlet apparatus using solvents such as hexane, chloroform, acetone and methanol. The plant extracts and a synthetic antifungal compound, Clotrimazole (authentic standard) were subjected to TLC and HPLC analyses. The Rf (relative front) value of Clotrimazole was 0.371. The plant’s leaf, root and stem extracts also gave distinct spots respectively at Rf value of 0.371 ± 0.0009. In HPLC, the TLC-separated active compound and Clotrimazole resolved at 1.90 ± 0.2 min (retention time). The amounts of active compound present in root, leaf and stem extracts were 538, 415 and 171 μg/g respectively. From the results of our study, we infer that the active compound isolated from Acalypha indica is more potent in controlling Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Escherichia coli. The Active compound present in the plant had more than 100% activity when compared to standard Clotrimazole.  相似文献

Follicular growth and kinetics were studied in detail in the ovaries of the Indian mole rat (Bandicota bengalensis) during various stages of the estrous cycle; days 7, 12, 15, 19, and 21 of pregnancy; and day 2 postpartum. The sizes of follicles, oocytes, nuclei, and nucleoli were measured. In all rats, regression coefficients, a, and intercepts, b, were calculated in oocyte/follicle, oocyte nucleus/follicle and oocyte nucleus/oocyte regressions. The oocyte reached its maximum size when the average follicle diameter was 117 microns in nonpregnant rats and 131 microns in pregnant rats. The oocyte nucleus attained maximum size when the follicle diameter was 110 microns during the estrous cycle and 111 microns during pregnancy and postpartum. Maximum values of the diameter of the largest antral follicle and average diameter of the four largest antral follicles were observed during proestrus (473 and 442 microns, respectively) and on day 21 of pregnancy (611 and 538 microns, respectively). Chi 2 analysis showed that distribution of various types of follicles was not independent of the stage of the estrous cycle and pregnancy. In estrus and metestrus most of the follicles were between stages I and V. However, by diestrus and proestrus, follicles of all size groups developed. The numbers of stage I and II follicles did not differ as pregnancy advanced. More stage V follicles were present on day 12 than on day 7 of pregnancy; however, their numbers decreased by day 15. Afterwards, progressive increase of stage V and (VI + VII) follicles was observed until day 21. This was accompanied by the shift of follicles from stage (III + IV) on days 19 and 21 of pregnancy and even of stage II on day 2 postpartum. Wherever possible, the results have been compared with previous observations in various rodent species.  相似文献

To maintain a constant size during cellular proliferation, a cell's growth rate must match its rate of division. Factors that govern proliferation must therefore coordinately regulate two distinct processes: the cellular biosynthesis that drives accumulation of mass, and progression through the cell division cycle. Recent work has identified several mechanisms which couple cell division to growth. Proteolytic activity was detected in neem (Azadirachta indica) exudate gum when tested with casein and albumin as substrates. The enzyme activity was separated into two fractions by chromatography on TEAE-cellulose after EDTA treatment. Both the enzyme fractions were fairly stable to high temperatures and wide range of pH conditions. The pH optima were found to be around 6.5. Phenylmethyl sulphonylfluoride inhibited the activity of both the fractions. EDTA, Β-mercaptoethanol, tosylamide phenylethylchloromethylketone, tosyllysine chloroimethylketone,p-chloromercuribenzoate and dithiobis-2-nitrobenzoie acid did not affect the activity of the two enzyme fractions. The two fractions had no hydrolytic action on a variety of synthetic substrates tested.  相似文献

Summary Due to burrowing activity and selective feeding, the highveld gerbil, Tatera brantsii A. Smith, has a great influnce on grassland vegetation. Within old colonies, in comparison to control sites, total biomass of plants was reduced by 47.6% from an average of 234.0 g/m2 to 122.6 g/m2. Root biomass was reduced by 34% from 539 g/m2 to 355 g/m2. Correspondingly maximum vegetation heights decreased by 33.5% from 106.4 cm to 70.8 cm. The number of plant species was not different between disturbed and undisturbed sites but species diversity and evenness of plants were significantly increased in gerbil colonies, mainly due to the reduction in dominant grass species. In disturbed sites dicotyledone plants, especially legumes, were favoured and increased in biomass. The gerbils are considered an integral part of the system and necessary for the maintepance of a high species diversity of plants. The regular disturbance of savanna vegetation followed by the recovery of the system is driven by the movement of gerbil colonies across the area. The proposed mechanism and the alternating vegetation pattern on similar soils due to disturbances which are an integral part of the system is in agreement with Remmert's mosaic cycle theory.  相似文献

Serum progesterone and testosterone concentrations were measured during different stages of oestrous and pregnancy in paired and unpaired female common voles (Microtus arvalis). Hormone concentrations were measured by ELISA, and cycle stages were determined by vaginal smears. Paired females usually had serum progesterone concentrations of more than 10 ng/ml in the oestrous cycle. A significant maximum was detected in prooestrous (51.70 +/- 7.84 ng/ml, mean +/- S.D.). Serum progesterone concentrations increased from about 40 ng/ml at the beginning of pregnancy to about 70 ng/ml on days 15 and 16. The last 2 days before parturition (days 19 and 20) were characterised by a decrease of progesterone concentrations to ca. 30 ng/ml. The maximum concentration of testosterone was found in prooestrous (1.58 +/- 0.31 ng/ml). Concentrations during pregnancy varied between 1.5 and 2.1 ng/ml. In two of three cases unpaired females exhibited progesterone values below 10 ng/ml, but with varying vaginal smear patterns. The combination of progesterone concentrations and vaginal smear patterns was found to be regular in only 23.8% of the cases. The most frequent cycle stage found was the oestrous (44.2%). Mean concentrations of progesterone (10.43 +/- 13.81 ng/ml) and testosterone (0.85 +/- 1.11 ng/ml) in unpaired females were significantly lower than in paired females, thereby denoting reproductive inactivity in the former. The study presents basic data for several parameters of the reproductive biology in the common vole and confirms the importance of combining hormone assays and vaginal smear monitoring in reproductive research.  相似文献

The survey for the natural enemies associated with the pumpkin caterpillar,Diaphania indica revealed the presence of 20 species of parasitoids, predators and pathogens. Of these, 16 were parasitoids belonging to the familiesBraconidae, Ichneumonidae, Bethylidae, Elasmidae andChalcididae. Except for 3 species the remaining parasitoids were new records forD. indica. Embryos excised from seeds of six generations (P1, P2, F1, BC1, BC2 and F2) of a cross WH 283 x WH 533 were cultured on modified MS medium already inoculated with secondary sporidia ofNeovossia indica. Significant variations for callusing response (CR) (54.55–75.55%) were observed among generations but the presence or absence ofN. indicia did not affect callusing response. A clear inhibition zone (IZ) was formed around each embryo showing callusing. The diameter of IZ varied significantly among generations and was maximum in the resistant genotype, WH 283 (3.60 cm). Fresh weight and dry weight of calli, initiated from embryo cultured and inoculated withN. indica, varied significantly among generations. Coefficient of infection as well as percentage of infection reflected the overdominance of susceptibility. Generation mean analysis showed that the three parameter model was adequate for diameter of IZ only. Six-parameter model showed that additive (in presence ofN. indica), additive and additive x dominance (in absence ofN. indica) effects were also significant. Complementary type of epistasis for fresh weight of calli and dominance, and dominance x dominance effects for dry weight of calli were observed in the presence ofN. indica. Magnitude of additive effects was higher for diameter of IZ in three parameter model. Therefore, selection might assist in improving this trait and thus indirectly help in attaining the resistance towardsN. indica.  相似文献

The partial removal of tightly bound Ca2+ from dialysed neem (Azadirachta indica) gum, resulted in the release of a basic protein from a highly anionic polysaccharide-protein complex as evidenced by chromatographic studies on TEAE-cellulose. Complete removal of Ca2+ caused, in addition, the release of a minor heteropolysaccharide which was found in association with the basic protein. These processes were reversed on the addition of Ca2+. The gum, in addition, contained a protein-rich component accounting for 35% protein and 7.5% total carbohydrate. This component behaved as a distinct entity during ion-exchange chromatography of the native gum solutions, or which were either partially or completely depleted of bound Ca2+.  相似文献

Summary Shoot propagation ofPersea indica (L.) K. Spreng was achieved using seedling axillary buds cultured on MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) medium with 1 mg/l (2.8 μM) N6-benzyladenine (BA). Forty percent of the obtained shoots did not elongate, but showed bud proliferation, which was maximal (three axillary buds per shoot) at the end of the seventh subculture. Sixty percent of the shoots elongated, did not show bud proliferation, and formed calluses at their base. Successful rooting (84.6%) was achieved dipping the base of each elongated shoot in 3 g/l (16.11 mM) indolebutyric acid (IBA) for 1–2 s, and transferring to half strength MS medium without growth regulators. These shoots presented an acclimatization success of 100%. Results suggest that micropropagated elongated shoots ofP. indica can be adequately used in reforestation programs.  相似文献

The life cycle of Laodicea indica is described. In the Bismarck Sea this species shows a normal alternation of generations in the wet season; but in the dry season the cycle is contracted, and planulae give rise to gonothecae without formation of a hydroid colony. Medusae are liberated about 3 d after planula settlement. This life cycle pattern is previously unreported in hydromedusae. The possible adaptive value of such a life cycle and the evolution of polyp reduction in hydromedusan life cycles are discussed.  相似文献

Callus cultures were initiated from the stem and leaf explants of aseptically grown Vicoa indica. A simple method is described for plant regeneration from callus and the rapid multiplication of the plants thus obtained. Callus initiation was optimum in Gamborg B5 (B5) basal medium containing either 2.0 mg l-1 naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) with 0.2 mg l-1 kinetin (Kn) or 2.0 mg l-1 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) with 0.2 mg l-1 NAA. The calli initiated on B5 medium were able to proliferate on both Murashige and Skoog (MS) and B5 basal medium. Shoot primordia were obtained from greenish callus on passage to B5 basal medium containing 3.0 mg l-1 BAP and 1.0 mg l-1 Kn. On further subculture onto B5 medium containing 0.2 mg l-1 Kn the shoot primordia developed into plantlets.  相似文献

Summary Immature seeds of Garcinia indica Choiss, were exeised from immature fruits and cultured on Lloyd and McCown (1980), woody plant medium (WPM) with different combinations of auxins and cytokinins. Somatic embryos were obtained on the media supplemented with 6-benzy laminopurine (BA; 2.2–22.1 μM) alone or in combination with α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA; 2.6 μM) with 80% frequency within a period of 2–3 wk. Subculture of embryos on medium containing BA (16.0 μM) supplemented with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA: 2.8–5.7 μM) and/or kinetin (4.6 μM) gave rise to clusters of secondary somatic embryos along with maturation of primary embryos. In subsequent subculture on hormone-free half-strength WPM, the embryo clusters germinated with an increase in the number of secondary somatic embryos. About 70% of somatic embryos germinated into complete plantlets, which were successfully established under greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

Blackgram (Vigna mungo L. Hepper)seeds contain two galactose-specific lectins, BGL-I and BGL-II. BGL-I was partially purified into two monomeric lectins which were designated as BGL-I-1 (94 kDa) and BGL-I-2 (89 kDa). BGL-II is a monomeric lectin of 83 kDA. The purified lectins were associated with galactosidase activities. BGL-I-1 and BGL-II were copurified with α-galactosidase activity while BGL-I-2 was largely associated with β-galactosidase activity. These lectins agglutinate trypsin treated rabbit erythrocytes, but not the human erythrocytes of A, B or O groups. They were stable between pH 3·5 and 7·5 for their agglutination. The lectins did not show any metalion requirement. They were inactivated at 50°C. The lectin activity was inhibited by D-galactose (0·1 mM). The Scatchard plots of galactose binding to these lectins are nonlinear and biphasic curves indicative of multiple binding sites. The data show that the monomeric lectins have both lectin and galactosidase activities suggestive of a bifunctional protein.  相似文献

The freshly harvested mature neem seeds (42.2 % seed moisture content) with 100 % viability deteriorate when naturally desiccated to below 10.9 %. The desiccation-induced loss of viability was closely associated with over accumulation of superoxide anion and lipid peroxidation products both in the embryonic axes and cotyledons. The levels of superoxide anion and lipid peroxidation products were higher in axes compared to cotyledons. Superoxide dismutase activity was not much affected, both in the axes and cotyledons of 100 % viable seeds during desiccation from 42.2 % to 10.9 % seed moisture content. Steep rise in its activity was observed during drying below lowest safe moisture content (LSMC). Activities of catalase and peroxidase exhibited substantially higher levels in the 100 % viable seeds dehydrated up to LSMC. Their activities declined sharply in seeds with water content below LSMC. Impairment of catalase and peroxidase activities possibly lead to enhanced accumulation of reactive oxygen species. The accumulation of superoxide anion, lipid peroxidation and differential expression of superoxide dismutase and catalse/peroxidase activities in response to desiccation (below LSMC) is discussed to explain the intermediate storage physiology of neem seeds.  相似文献
