The gerbils were exposed to daily I min aggressive encounters for 30 days, to study the effect of social stress on reproduction. The encounters were induced by introduction of an adult male or female gerbil into the cage of a male retired breeder living in isolation. In the male gerbils the encounters decreased (P < 0.001) gonadal weight and sperm counts. The accessory sex organs responded variedly to the encounters. The surface areas of abdominal scent glands decreased (P < 0.001). The results suggest that exposure to aggressive encounters had a negative influence on male reproduction in the gerbil. Contrary to the results in male gerbils, encounters with males had a positive influence on reproduction in females. This was evidenced by data on ovarian and uterine weights, follicular kinetics and the estrous cycle. The ovarian and uterine weights increased (P < 0.001) in gerbils exposed to the encounters. The number of estruses increased (P < 0.001) whereas the diestruses decreased. Study of follicular kinetics revealed an increase in the number of growing follicles and a decrease in the number of regressive follicles. The mechanism(s) by which the encounters influence reproduction is not known. Adrenal gland weights increased (P < 0.001) in both male and female gerbils exposed to the encounters. The pinealocyte cell and nuclear diameters decreased (P < 0.01) in males and increased (P < 0.001) in female gerbils after the encounters. Presumably the adrenal and pineal glands may play an important role mediating the effects of the encounters.  相似文献

We report on predation on adult females of the parasitoids Aphytis aonidiae and A. vandenboschi (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) foraging in the field. During 89.6 h of observation, we witnessed 18 encounters with predators, 6 of which resulted in parasitoid capture. Three classes of generalist predators attacked Aphytis: spiders (unidentified Salticidae and Thomisidae), workers of the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, and nymphs of the assassin bug Zelus renardii (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). Although observations were conducted during most months of the year, encounters with predators occurred only during September, October and November. During these months, encounters with predators occurred on average every 3.2 h of observation, with one in three encounters resulting in parasitoid capture. Peaks in predation coincided with population peaks of A. aonidiae, but were unrelated to population dynamics of any of the predators. We compare these results with previously published laboratory studies on longevity of Aphytis parasitoids, and conclude that predation pressure has the potential to severely limit parasitoid fitness in the field. Wrangham (1980) hypothesized that knowledge of the nature of intergroup encounters is crucial to understanding primate social relationships and social organization. I studied a single social group of wild white-faced capuchins over a period of 26 months and observed 44 encounters between social groups during 3703 hr of observation. All intergroup encounters consisted of predominantly hostile social interactions. However, nonaggressive interactions between males of different social groups occurred in a few cases. Adult males were the sole participants in 39 encounters and the primary participants in all 44 encounters. The alpha male was the most frequent participant. High-ranking females participated aggressively in five encounters, and low-ranking females never participated. There was no stable intergroup dominance hierarchy. I hypothesize that the need for male-male cooperation in intergroup aggression is an important factor influencing the quality of intragroup male-male relationships. Behavior during intergroup encounters is consistent with the idea that intergroup behavior is related to male reproductive strategies, but inconsistent with the idea that intergroup aggression is related to female defense of resources. The possibility that males are “hired guns” (Wrangham, 1980) cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

The number of encounters per prey, the proportion of encounters resulting in attacks, and the proportion of attacks that were successful were observed while fourth-instar Notonecta undulata nymphs preyed on smaller N. undulata nymphs. While encounters per prey and proportion of encounters resulting in attacks increased with prey size, the proportion of attacks that were successful decreased. The increase in encounter rate per prey was due in part to an increase in the predator's reactive distance to prey as prey size increased. While none of the attack parameters varied significantly with prey density, logarithmic regression of the number of encounters per unit search time on prey density suggested that prey density tends to have a positive effect on encounters per first-instar prey but a negative effect on encounters per second-instar prey. A functional response model is presented that incorporates components of the predator's attack rate as exponential functions of prey density and allows for effects of the time the predator may spend evaluating prey encountered but not attacked and time spent attacking prey not captured. Estimates of the attack parameters derived from the experimental data are used in the model to generate functional response curves for fourth-instar N. undulata preying on first- or second-instar conspecifics. The predicted curve for second-instar prey is typical type II but the curve for firstinstar prey is slightly positively density dependent at low prey densities, i.e., type III.  相似文献

We experimentally determined that the lizard Pedioplanis namaquensis engages in area-restricted searching (=ARS, localized searching after encounters with food) while foraging and that prey characteristics influence ARS. Single prey items were introduced to free-ranging lizards, and their subsequent search effort was characterized using first passage times (=FPT, time required for an animal to cross a circle of a given radius). Three prey types were used: termites, flies, and rice (control). FPTs were longer following termite encounters than following fly or control encounters. Control treatments produced no change in FPT, while lizards searching for termites showed the greatest change. The use by Pedioplanis namaquensis of ARS was most pronounced for the typically aggregated prey type.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in agonistic behaviors and effects of familiarity on agonistic behaviors in wild-caught adult rat-like hamsters (Cricetulus triton) were observed in dyadic encounters in a neutral arena. The aggression of opposite- and same-sex encounters became higher or remained the same during the non-breeding season. This indicates that the hamsters were solitary during both seasons. Familiarity increased the aggression in male–male encounters and decreased the aggression in female–female encounters during both seasons. Familiarity also increased the aggression in female–male encounters during the non-breeding season and had no effect on the aggression in female–male encounters during the breeding season. These results may be related to the hamsters social structure. The more agonistic acts both male and female hamsters had, the more frequently they marked using flank glands during both seasons. This implies that flank gland marking can be used to advertise status and can be assessed by opponents to reduce the agonistic costs.  相似文献

The nature of intergroup encounters differed between two populations of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata): the Yakushima and Kinkazan populations. In the Yakushima population, intergroup encounters were more likely to result in the displacement of one group, intergroup agonistic interaction was common, and intergroup dominance was usually distinct. When displacement occurred at Yakushima, larger groups tended to dominate smaller ones. Conversely, in the Kinkazan population, intergroup encounters rarely resulted in displacement, intergroup agonistic interaction was rare, and intergroup dominance was usually unclear. Thus, monkeys in Yakushima appear to defend resources actively during encounters, while those in Kinkazan usually did not defend resources. The frequency of encounters was significantly higher in Yakushima than in Kinkazan. The two populations had very different group densities and traveling speeds, both of which directly influence the chance of encounters. Taking these differences into account, we compared the observed frequency with those predicted by the ideal gas model. The observed frequencies in both populations were about one-third of the number expected with the model, which suggests that the differences in encounter frequency were caused by differences in group density and traveling speed. We discuss this intraspecific variation in light of economic defendability in connection to habitat differences and the evolutionary significance of resource defense behavior.  相似文献

Parasitoids learn olfactory and visual cues that are associated with their hosts, and use these cues to forage more efficiently. Classical conditioning theory predicts that encounters with high-quality hosts will lead to better learning of host-associated cues than encounters with low-quality hosts. We tested this prediction in a two-phase laboratory experiment with the parasitoid Trichogramma thalense Pinto & Oatman (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and the host Anagasta kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).Host quality during the first exposure to hosts affected later foraging behavior for some experimental treatments, as predicted. We used a learning model, followed by patch-time optimization, to interpret our findings. We first simulated the parasitoids' host encounters during the experiment, and predicted their estimate of patch quality after each encounter. We then used dynamic optimization to predict the parasitoids' optimal patch residence times. The model reproduces the trends of the experimental results.  相似文献

We examined winter social behaviour of the snow voleChionomys nivalis Martins, 1842, a rock-dwelling microtine found principally in high-mountain biotopes. We conducted dyadic encounters among wild-caughtC. nivalis to determine patterns of intraspecific tolerance and the degree of aggressiveness between and within sexes during wintering periods. Our data show a high frequency of agonistic behaviours in all social encounters. Male pairs spent less time being aggressive than female pairs but more time in investigative behaviours. In contrast, the intensity of aggression displayed during interactions was significantly higher in male-male encounters than in female-female encounters, with an intermediate level of aggression in male-female encounters. The low degree of social tolerance found seems to be in agreement with the available data on the social organization of this species and further suggests that individuals may not spatially associate during over-wintering periods. Although both males and females were socially intolerant, the different patterns observed between the sexes may underlie different strategies.  相似文献

Frequencies and sequences of visually-identifiable acts were investigated in male-female combinations of gerbils of the taxa Tatera brantsii, Gerbillurus paeba paeba, G. p. exilis, G. tytonis, G. setzeri, and G. vallinus. Sexual dimorphism of behaviour was most apparent in T. brantsii, G. setzeri, and G. vallinus, in which following, anogenital sniffing, and mounting were significantly more frequently performed by males than females. Females of all taxa presented and darted, while males did not perform these acts. Analysis of first-order transitions of acts in intraspecific encounters revealed remarkable similarity among species in the sequences identified as most significantly deviating from expected frequency. Species-specific patterns of behaviour were detected by discriminant analysis. G. p. paeba, G. p. exilis and G. vallinus were not clearly distinguished by discriminant analysis, and presented a behaviour pattern characterized by low levels of aggression and high levels of huddling behaviour. G. tytonis, G. setzeri and T. brantsii were characterized by low levels of huddling, G. tytonis performed the largest number of upright postures of all taxa, G. setzeri watched more than other taxa, and T. brantsii nasal sniffed less frequently than Gerbillurus taxa. Differences among taxa were more apparent in males than in females. Interspecific encounters were staged between G. p. paeba and G. p. exilis, G. p. paeba and G. tytonis, G. setzeri and G. vallinus. Males showed more evidence of changed behaviour in interspecific encounters than females. More sexual and less agonistic behaviour was detected in intraspecific encounters than in interspecific encounters, but this was statistically significant in only 5 of 12 combinations. Visual, tactile and olfactory communication during physical contact with another individual may complement auditory communication in promoting conspecific recognition in southern African gerbils.  相似文献

Species diversity has been shown to decrease prevalence of disease in a variety of host–pathogen systems, in a phenomenon termed the Dilution Effect. Several mechanisms have been proposed by which diversity may decrease prevalence, though few have been tested in natural host-pathogen systems. We investigated the mechanisms by which diversity influenced the prevalence of Sin Nombre virus (SNV), a directly transmitted virus in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). We monitored both intra and interspecific encounters of deer mice using foraging arenas at five sites in the Great Basin Desert with disparate levels of species diversity to examine two potential mechanisms which may contribute to the dilution of SNV prevalence: (1) reduced frequency of encounters between deer mice, or (2) reduced duration of contacts between deer mice. We also investigated the relationship between deer mouse density and these mechanisms, as density is often predicted to influence both inter and intraspecific encounters. Results of our study indicate that frequency of intraspecific interactions between deer mice was reduced with increased diversity. Species diversity did not impact average duration of encounters. Density was correlated with absolute, but not relative rates of encounters between deer mice, suggesting that encounters may be influenced by factors other than density. Our study indicates that species diversity influences the dynamics of SNV by reducing encounters between deer mice in a trade-off between intra and interspecific interactions.  相似文献

Agonistic behaviour in the river bullhead C. gobio consists of visual (raising gill covers and fins, lowering the head, darkening) and acoustic (single knock sounds and trains of knock sounds) threat displays, rarely followed by attacks and bites. This study investigates the relationship of vocalizations with size, dominance, territory dimensions and sex of the opponents. Four groups, each consisting of a big male, a small male and a female, were each investigated for three different days. The number of won contests of each individual, the numbers of each sound produced during these encounters and the tank part where encounters took place were determined. Subordinate fish emit fewer sounds but relatively far more trains of knock sounds than dominant ones. They produce relatively more sounds under shelters whereas dominants do this on uncovered areas. α-fish produce more calls during agonistic encounters with β-fish than Ω fish. In β-individuals no such difference was noted. Basically no sex related behaviour could be observed. In each area of the tank one individual won most contests (= territory). Dimensions of territories differed significantly between individuals in each tank (α-, β-, Ω-fish). In no case were all three individuals able to maintain territories. Relative sizes of fish correlate significantly with relative numbers of successful encounters and with territory dimensions. Furthermore, both parameters are positively correlated with the numbers of sounds emitted by an individual. Sound production in C. gobio functions as an acoustical threat display. Because of the high energy costs of sound emission underwater it might be a very effective method of assessing the fighting ability of an opponent.  相似文献

Data from a 15–month field study of the capped langur (Presbytis pileata) in moist deciduous forest in Bangladesh show that during intergroup encounters males respond more aggressively to extra-group males and to the resident males of unfamiliar one-male groups than they do toward familiar males. Lone males followed established one-male groups and attempted to interact with group females. During intergroup encounters males responded to the approach of unfamiliar males with significantly more displays than were given to familiar (frequently encountered) males. The frequency of displays given to approaching groups showed a negative correlation with the frequency of encounters with those groups. In 50% of intergroup encounters males pushed and bit their group females if the females strayed from the immediate proximity of the group male. Further observations suggest that males obtain females that have emigrated from established groups or attempt to interact with them in established onemale groups. Males had a tenure from at least 13 months to at least 26 months, and between 1986 and 1988 no male changes were seen. Capped langur males defended females from other males, but females did not defend resources or participate in intergroup encounters. The implications of this sex difference in behavior during encounters is discussed with regard to ecological models of female-bonded primate groups.  相似文献

Since intruding males displace resident males as often as resident males successfully defend their territory (mantle cavity of a mussel), resident males do not hold a competitive advantage during male-male aggressive encounters. During the reproductive period, intraspecific dyadic encounters were staged within and between S. spilosoma and S. mexicanus individuals under controlled conditions. Video recordings were used to describe and quantify behaviour of males and females of these two sympatric ground squirrels. To compare dyads within and between species two indices (an Agonistic index and a Tolerance index) were designed from measures of behavioural frequencies. During intrasexual encounters, S. mexicanns males and females appear to be more aggressive than male and female S. spilosoma. In both species, encounters between males were more aggressive than between females, which were very tolerant to each other in S. spilosoma. In most cases encounters between male and female conspecifics exhibit an intermediate level of agonistic behaviour and tolerance. The null hypothesis of similarity of the social behaviour of S. spilosoma and S. mexicanus is falsified. Some alternative hypotheses are proposed. First, the tolerance of S. spilosoma is an adaptation to the difficult environmental conditions. Thus differences between the two species reflect differences in behavioural evolution in allopatric populations. Second, S. spilosoma tolerance is a behavioural response to S. mexicanus' recent arrival.  相似文献

During a 3 month field study, 18 group encounters between four groups of Alaotran gentle lemurs (Hapalemur griseus alaotrensis) were observed in the Lake Alaotra marshland in Madagascar. Behaviors observed during group encounters are described, and quantitative data on intergroup interactions and ranging patterns are discussed in the context of territoriality. Intergroup interactions varied in their intensity, ranging from visual monitoring, scent marking, and display locomotion to penetrating the neighboring range. A quarter (27%) of the encounters were aggressive, involving chases and confrontation displays, and no affiliative interactions were observed. Both adult males and females were involved in intergroup encounters, with males playing more active roles. All encounters took place in the small overlapping areas of neighboring home ranges. The outcome of an aggressive encounter was determined by its location, with the resident group always driving out the intruding one. The Alaotran gentle lemur actively advertised and consistently defended a large area of its home range against intrusion of neighboring groups and can therefore be considered territorial. Am. J. Previous work has shown that the contact inhibition that occurs among roots of Ambrosia dumosa shrubs has a self/nonself recognition capability. In the current study, we investigated some of the geographic and genotypic dimensions of this recognition capability by using root observation chambers to observe the effects of encounters of individual roots on root elongation rates. We measured such effects in encounters between roots of plants from the same region and compared these to effects in encounters between roots of plants from two different regions. We also measured effects of encounters between roots of plants from the same clones and compared these to effects of encounters of roots of plants from different clones. Roots of plants from the same region (population) showed the usual “nonself” precipitous decline in elongation rates following contact, but when roots of plants from different regions contacted each other, elongation rates continued unchanged. When roots of separate plants from the same clone contacted each other, the same “nonself” precipitous decline in elongation rates as seen in encounters between roots of plants of different clones from the same region occurred. Meanwhile, in these same experiments “self” contacts between sister roots connected to the same plants resulted in no changes in elongation rates. Thus, differences between individuals from two geographically separate populations of Ambrosia dumosa may be sufficient to thwart the “nonself,” population-level recognition of similarity apparently necessary for contact inhibition. Furthermore, the “self” recognition mechanism, which precludes contact inhibition between two roots on the same plant, appears to be physiological rather than genetic in nature.  相似文献

Bears are often considered ecological equivalents of large primates, but the latter often respond with fear, avoidance, and alarm calls to snakes, both venomous and non‐venomous, there is sparse information on how bears respond to snakes. We videotaped or directly observed natural encounters between black bears (Ursus americanus) and snakes. Inside the range of venomous snakes in Arkansas and West Virginia, adolescent and adult black bears reacted fearfully in seven of seven encounters upon becoming aware of venomous and non‐venomous snakes; but in northern Michigan and Minnesota where venomous snakes have been absent for millennia, black bears showed little or no fear in four encounters with non‐venomous snakes of three species. The possible roles of experience and evolution in bear reactions to snakes and vice versa are discussed. In all areas studied, black bears had difficulty to recognize non‐moving snakes by smell or sight. Bears did not react until snakes moved in 11 of 12 encounters with non‐moving timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) and four species of harmless snakes. However, in additional tests in this study, bears were repulsed by garter snakes that had excreted pungent anal exudates, which may help explain the absence of snakes, both venomous and harmless, in bear diets reported to date.  相似文献

The behavioral basis of sexual isolation was investigated in 11 crosses staged between individuals from nine allopatric populations of the Appalachian mountain dusky salamander, Desmognathus ochrophaeus. Scan-sampled observations of within-population (homotypic) and between-population (heterotypic) heterosexual encounters yielded the following results. 1) Fewer heterotypic encounters than homotypic encounters resulted in insemination of females. Indices of the strength of sexual isolation based on insemination data ranged from 0.26 (lowest) to 0.82 (highest), indicating that mechanisms that confer sexual isolation may evolve during allopatric differentiation. 2) Heterotypic encounters that progressed as far as the stage of courtship during which the male stimulates the female to mate did so at the same time as homotypic encounters, although the number of the former reaching this stage was lower. 3) The time interval from courtship initiation to insemination was longer in heterotypic encounters than homotypic encounters. In some crosses, males did not attempt to initiate heterotypic encounters, indicating that this sex is responsible for sexual isolation in these instances. We use our results to formulate specific hypotheses concerning the behavioral basis of sexual isolation in these salamanders, and some possible experimental approaches are suggested.  相似文献

In this study, the author evaluated two adult age groups of the Mexican rivulus Millerichthys robustus with body size asymmetries to determine the strategies used by an annual killifish during agonistic interactions of different ontogenetic stages. To achieve this goal, the author first characterized the ethogram of agonistic interactions of M. robustus composed of seven behavioural units in males and five behavioural units in females. The author then analysed agonistic interaction strategies used by males and females with body size asymmetries in two groups of different adult ages that represent different ontogenetic stages: (a) just after sexual maturity was reached, at 5 weeks of age, and (b) near natural death, at 24 weeks of age. The agonistic behaviour patterns of M. robustus were compatible with the logic of mutual assessment. Large males had an advantage during their interactions in both age groups, winning all of the encounters. Nonetheless, there was more aggression in 5-week-old fish encounters. In addition, small 24-week-old fish were more aggressive than small 5-week-old fish. These changing strategies may be because of the cost–benefits required during a fight at each ontogenetic stage. In the female encounters, size did not predict winners, as both small and large fish won a similar number of encounters, and some contests remained unresolved regardless of age group. There was a tendency for small females of any age to risk more than males in fights to maintain reproductive fitness.  相似文献
