This study assesses the influence of thermal regime on the development, survival rates and early growth of embryos of sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus incubated at five constant temperatures (7, 11, 15, 19 and 23° C). The time from fertilization to 50% hatching and from hatching to 50% burrowing were inversely related to incubation temperature. All the embryos incubated at 7° C died at very early stages, while those maintained at 11° C did not attain the burrowing stage. Survival from fertilization to hatching was 61, 89, 91 and 89% at 11, 15, 19 and 23° C, decreasing to 58, 70 and 70% from hatching to burrowing at 15, 19 and 23° C, respectively. Larvae reared during the first 3 months of exogenous feeding in a common environment at constant 21° C, revealed maximum survival for an incubation temperature of 15° C (43% of burrowed larvae) decreasing strongly at 19° C (16%) and 23° C (one suvivor among 240 larvae). Body length at the burrowing stage was maximum for embryos incubated at 19° C, but body mass increased in the interval 15–23° C. Mean incubation temperatures experienced by 117 broods during the embryonic development in the source river were estimated in 15·3±2·30° C and 16·7±1·76° C (mean±1 s.d .) for the periods fertilization-to-hatching and hatching-to burrowing, respectively.  相似文献

Two series of experiments are described: in one, the hatching of half and whole cysts is compared, in some cases after they have been subjected to tryptic digestion; in the second series, the hatching of free eggs is considered.
Total emergence from halved cysts was very much greater than that from intact cysts. Emergence from trypsin-treated halved cysts was greater than emergence from control halved cysts, suggesting that the enzyme affects the egg shell or the larva inside; it is possible, however, that the enzyme also affects the cyst wall, for treated whole cysts shrink more rapidly and to a greater extent when exposed to air.
Total emergence from trypsin-treated whole cysts did not differ significantly from that of untreated whole cysts, unlike previous findings (Ellenby, 1946 a); however, emergence began sooner from these cysts. Halving the cysts also resulted in earlier emergence, the biggest effect being produced by a combination of both trypsin and subsequent halving.
The variability shown by the intact cysts was considerably greater than that shown by the halved cysts; halving the cysts reduced the coefficient of variation from 0·55 for whole untreated cysts, to 0·19 for untreated halved cysts, and to 0·13 for trypsin-treated halved cysts. Apparently some of the variability in emergence, like the limitation of total emergence, is bound up with the nature of the cyst as a more or less closed system.
In two experiments the hatching of eggs freed from half-cysts was compared with that of eggs in their fellow intact halves. In one experiment there was no difference; in the other it was possible to show that a higher proportion of free eggs hatched. Evidently factors limiting hatching may operate among eggs in a mass, even though they are no longer completely enclosed in a cyst.  相似文献

The significance of soil moisture in relation to aeration and larval emergence from cysts of Heterodera schachtii Schmidt is discussed. The rate of larval emergence increased as oxygen concentration increased. A comparison of the moisture characteristics of a mass of cysts and of sand of about the same particle size showed that water was removed from between both the cysts and the sand particles at 12–16 cm. of water-pressure deficiency. There was an indication that water was removed from between the eggs within the cysts at 100–135 cm - of water-pressure deficiency. The rate of larval emergence showed a gradual decline is suction was increased beyond 20 cm. of water-pressure deficiency, approaching zero at 175 cm. of water-pressure deficiency. Results suggest that egg hatch is not directly dependent on pressure deficiency and that the presence of free larvae within the cyst inhibits further egg hatch. A technique is described for measuring larval motility in sand. There is a decline in motility when most of the water has been removed from the sand pore-spaces. It is suggested that the relatively low rates of larval emergence at high-pressure deficiencies are due to inhibition of larval migration from the cyst by the surface forces of the water film.  相似文献

Techniques for determining the influence of various substances on the rate of larval emergence from cysts of the beet eelworm are described. There is no significant difference between the rates of larval emergence in glutamic acid, galactinol, inositol and water; the rate of larval emergence in beet diffusate, on the other hand, was significantly higher. Studies of larval emergence in carbohydrates suggest that the cyst population used in the experiments was heterogeneous, consisting of two types of cyst which have different reactions to stimulation at different concentrations. The significance of root exudates in relation to beet eelworm is discussed.  相似文献

Samples of root diffusate from sprouts ( Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera ), swedes ( B. napus var. napobrassica ), rape kale ( B. napus var. arvmsis ), and white mustard ( Sinupis alba ), all stimulated larval emergence from cysts of Heterodera cruciferae. When mustard-root diffusate was added to leachings from the other species tested there was no apparent effect on larval emergence. In half dilution with tap water, mustard leachings were comparable in activity with similar dilutions of leachings from the other species under observation. Leachings from soil were less active than those from the four species of plants tested, but showed significant activity in comparison with tap water.
The form of the hatching curve was studied using diffusates from both sprouts and mustard roots, and in each case when cumulative hatch was plotted against time on a logarithmic scale, the sigmoid curve obtained closely fitted the theoretical sigmoid calculated from a probit analysis of the data.
Estimates were obtained of the log activity values of leachings from the four species of plants tested and from soil, following an examination of the dilution curves for mustard and sprouts root diffusates. These curves were closely parallel with one another, and it was therefore considered justifiable to derive log activity values for these root diffusates, although the cysts used in the hatching tests and the root-diffusate samples were each obtained from a single source. For this reason some caution is perhaps called for in the interpretation of the results presented in this paper.  相似文献

Abstract. The Senegalese grasshopper, Oedaleus senegalensis (Krauss) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), is periodically a devastating pest of subsistence crops in the sahelian zone of West Africa.Egg diapause has been suggested as an important component of the mechanism acting to generate outbreaks and therefore diapause duration, egg survival in relation to desiccation and egg-pod morphology were investigated in this study.
Three months after oviposition, 50% of initially diapausing egg pods maintained in the laboratory exhibited 'partial emergence' and produced hoppers.No difference in diapause duration was evident between egg pods maintained at a constant 30 ± 1°C and those maintained under alternating temperature conditions of 23 ± 1°C and 35 ± 1°C.Laboratory maintained eggs showed significant variation in diapause duration with diapause lasting between 2 months and 4 years.Diapause duration was shorter in the field with only c. 1.4% of eggs remaining in diapause after a single dry season (6–7 months).Survival of eggs in relation to desiccation was high in the field and low in the laboratory, and field eggs lost only c. 20% of their body weight over the dry season.Survival of diapausing and non-diapausing egg pods in the laboratory was similar, indicating that diapause in this species is primarily a mechanism for preventing emergence at an inappropriate time of year, rather than conferring any additional resistance to desiccation.Egg pods oviposited under diapause-inducing conditions (LD 14:10 h, 25°C) were significantly shorter than those laid under non-diapausing conditions (LD 10:14 h, 40°C).These results are discussed both in relation to possible O.senegalensis 'bet-hedging' strategies and to the probable mechanism operating behind major outbreaks of this species.  相似文献

Embryo survival and hatch rates were measured in black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri exposed to different treatments of dissolved oxygen: hypoxic and normoxic, three salinities: 15, 23 and 35 and two temperatures: 16 and 20° C. Hypoxic conditions (50% saturation) reduced 1 day embryo survival by up to 15% ( P < 0·05) compared to embryos held in normoxic (>80% saturation) conditions. Temperature had no effect on the survival of embryos in these treatments, however, lowered salinity significantly reduced embryo survival at 20° C, but not at 16° C. Mean hatch rates were reduced by 10–28% in hypoxic treatments ( P < 0·05) and lowered salinity treatments ( P < 0·05). Hatching was delayed by up to 24 h at 16° C and very low (or zero) hatching occurred in hypoxic treatments at salinities of 15 and 23. These results confirm that environmental conditions in estuaries are important factors in determining spawning success of black bream and are discussed in relation to global warming and climate change that are likely to alter the physical conditions in southern Australian estuaries.  相似文献

The speed of development and the developmental mortality of Tribolium confusum were studied over a series of constant temperatures between 15° and 40° C. at 10, 30, 70 and 90% R.H. using wheatfeed as food.
Eggs did not hatch at 15° or 40° C. at any humidity. At 37.5° C. about 60% of eggs hatched and at all other conditions about 90% hatched. The effect of temperature on the duration of the egg period is shown graphically, the shortest period being at 35° C. Humidity does not affect the egg period.
Larvae failed to develop to pupae at 17.5° C., at 10% R.H. at 20° C, and at 10 and 90% R.H. at 37.5° C. The rate of larval development was affected by both temperature and humidity being quickest at the higher humidities and at about 32.5° C. Larval mortality was less than 16% except at 37.5° C., at 10% R.H. or less, and at 20°C., 90% R.H.
The duration of the pupal period was not affected by humidity and was shortest at 37.5°C. The total developmental period is compared with that of T. castaneum over the range of temperature and humidity conditions in which both species can grow. The optimum for developmental speed and the maximum and the minimum temperatures at which development is possible were all about 2.5°C. lower for T. confusum than for T. castaneum. The developmental periods for the two species were equal at temperatures between 23 and 27°C., depending on humidity. At lower temperatures, T. confusum developed the more quickly and at higher temperatures the more slowly.  相似文献

Abstract
No immature stages of Culex annulirostris were found during field sampling in 1979–1980 when the average water temperature was < 17 °C; they reappeared when the average water temperature was 19 °C and reached the peak density (mean 107 immatures/cylinder) at 26.5 °C.
The effect of 6 temperatures (15–40°C) on egg hatching, development and survival of the immature stages of Cx annulirostris in the laboratory showed that at 15 and 40°C, eggs failed to hatch and larvae died in the first instars. The optimum temperatures for egg hatching and the survival of immature stages were 25 and 30°C. At these temperatures, 85 and 82% respectively of egg rafts hatched, the mean number of larvae per raft was 258 ± 9.8 and 260 ± 11.4 with immature survival of 83.5 and 79.0% respectively. Mean time to hatch at 20–35°C ranged from 1.2 d (35°C) to 2.9 d (20 °C). Developmental times from first instar to adult ranged from 7.1 d (35 °C) to 25.2 d (20 °C). The threshold for development of the immatures was 15.6 ± 2.5°C and the thermal constant was 142.9 ± 26.5 day—degrees (incubation temperatures 20–35°C). At less suitable temperatures of 20 and 35 °C, hatching (57.5 and 45%), number larvae per raft (mean 139.8 ± 9.8 and 102.6 ± 14.2) and survival were low.  相似文献

Unpredictability in the temporal availability of susceptible hosts is likely to act as a selection pressure affecting the life history strategies of parasites. In highly variable environments the future of the lineage can be secured by spreading the risk, for example, by producing descendants that differ in their timing of emergence. Counter to this, in predictable environments a single "best-adapted" phenotype is expected. We asked whether ectoparasitic Argulus coregoni egg hatching pattern can be explained as a genetically canalized individual trait; an instance of phenotypic plasticity or bet-hedging. We collected egg clutches laid by individual A. coregoni females in early and late reproductive period of the lice population and randomized the clutches within 3 treatments. Intra- and inter-clutch variability in the hatching dynamics of A. coregoni eggs was monitored and the reproductive potential assessed. On average A. coregoni females laid 317 (SD±176.6) eggs. We found that the plasticity in the hatching dynamics among A. coregoni eggs was remarkable. Noticeable peaks in hatching were followed each of the repeated artificial "winter treatments" in 1°C. Repeated 2 weeks cold treatments induced relatively bigger hatching peaks than 2 days cold treatments compared to controls at room temperature. However, in all treatments, egg clutches hatched through an extended period of 7 months on average and the total hatching percentages were similar. We found that intra-clutch variability in hatching among eggs laid by single A. coregoni females was greater than inter-clutch variability. Our data support the predictions of the adaptive bet-hedging strategy in relation to egg-hatching dynamics. Response to cooling and bet-hedging may be adaptive for such species like A. coregoni since by synchronizing the life-cycle with the seasonal environment will assist transmission and parasite fitness.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake rates and yolk-inclusive dry weiGhts were measured during the egg and yolk-sac larval stages of milkfish, Chanos chanos (Forsskal). Oxygen uptake by eggs and yolk-sac larvae was measured to assess the effects of four salinities (20,25,30,35 ppt) at 28°C. The effects of three temperatures (23,28,33°C) on oxygen uptake by yolk-sac larvae were determined at a salinity of 35 ppt. Dry weights were measured throughout embryonic development at 28°C and the yolk-sac stage at 23.28 and 33°C.
Oxygen uptake rates of eggs increased more than fivefold during embryogenesis (0.07±0.03 to 0.40 ± 03 μl O2 egg −1 h −1;blastula to prehatch stage). Larval oxygen uptake did not change with age but was affected by rearing temperature (0.33 ± 0.08, 0.44 ± 0.07 and 0.63 ± 0.13 μl O2 larva −1 h−1 at 23, 28 and 33°C, respectively; Q10= 1.93). Acute temperature changes from 28 to 33°C caused significant increases in oxygen uptake by embryos (Q 10= 1.69–3.58) and yolk-sac larvae (Q 10=2.55). Salinity did not affect metabolic rates.
Dry weight of eggs incubated at 28°C decreased 13% from fertilization to hatching. Incubation temperatures from 23–33°C did not affect dry weights at hatching. Rearing temperatures significantly affected the rate of larval yolk absorption (Q 10= 2.25).  相似文献

Emergence pattern and developmental status at emergence of Baltic salmon fry from the Umeälven hatchery stock (63°50'N, 20°25'E) were studied at 6, 10 and 12°C in the laboratory. The number of days and degree days from hatching to 50% emergence decreased exponentially with increasing temperature. Synchronization of emergence increased with temperature. Optimal temperature for incubation of yolk-sac alevins was 10°C, which resulted in the largest fry at emergence and the lowest death rate. Fry kept at 6°C had the lowest mean weight and at 12°C the highest death rate. The fry emerged at an earlier developmental state with more yolk at 12°C than at 6°C. The Baltic salmon had a faster developmental rate during the gravel-phase, as compared to more southern Atlantic salmon populations.  相似文献

Eggs and alevins from 21 families of pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha , from five odd-year broodline stocks spawning in southern British Columbia were incubated under controlled water temperatures of 4° C, 8° C and 12° C. There were significant differences in egg survival among stocks and among families within stocks at all incubation temperatures, but the differences were greatest at 4° C. Alevin survival was at least 97% for each stock at each temperature. The most northern spawning stocks had higher egg survival at 4° C than did the others. Hatching time of the alevins and emergence time of the fry were similar for all five stocks. Alevins hatching at 8° C were longer than those hatching at 4°C or 12°C, but there were no stock differences in alevin length or tissue weight. Stocks with larger eggs produced alevins of greater total weight and more yolk. Emergent fry from Vancouver Island stocks had the greatest tissue weight at 12° C, but Fraser River fry were heaviest at 8° C. There were significant differences among families within stocks for alevin and fry size parameters, suggesting that family variation should be accounted for in studies of salmonid developmental biology.  相似文献

Measurements of larval growth rates were used to produce an empirical model for examining factors influencing patterns of size structure and emergence period for populations of the leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium ( lillii group) in two high-country streams (South Island, New Zealand). Growth rates were measured in situ by enclosing groups of larvae and natural stream substrata in growth chambers.
2. Multiple regression analysis showed that temperature explained most variation among growth rates in both streams. Growth rates were also significantly related to larval size, although the effect was minor compared with temperature. 3. Growth models based on multiple regression equations ( R 2 = 0.70–0.84) simulated the extended emergence period and complex size structure observed for populations of Deleatidium in the field. Larvae hatching from eggs deposited before mid-February (austral summer) probably emerge as adults before May (minimum cohort duration ≈ 3 months). Larvae hatching after mid-February probably do not emerge as adults until the following summer because of low growth rates during winter (maximum cohort duration ≈ 11 months).

The antagonism of a number of bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi in pure culture on soil extract agar has been investigated. A considerable number of each of the three groups were highly antagonistic at 25° C., fewer were active at 15° C. and only a very limited number were effective at 5° C.
In greenhouse experiments damping-off of lettuce seedlings was substantially controlled by selected antagonists in sterile sand, soil or in sand/soil mixtures. Under similar conditions in unsterile soil, forms highly antagonistic in pure culture were generally ineffective in controlling disease. In one experiment control of disease in natural soil was obtained by the use of soil amendments, the effect being enhanced by the inoculation of one of these amendments with suspensions of antagonists.
Attempts to control disease in the field by the use of soil amendments are described. In one year a substantial increase in the stand of healthy seedlings was obtained with certain treatments.  相似文献

Eggs of Heterobranchus longifilis Val. 1840 were artificially fertilized and incubated at a range of temperatures (20, 23, 25, 27, 29 and 32°C). The time from fertilization to hatching decreased with increasing temperature. No eggs survived to hatch at 20 and 32°C incubation temperatures, while at 23 and 29°C hatching was only minimal. Optimum hatching was obtained at 25 and 27°C, which corresponds to the ambient temperature range during the breeding season. Larvae of H. longifilis were reared for 11 days post-hatching at 20, 25, 27, 29 and 32°C. Growth increased with temperature (P < 0.05), whereas survival depicted an inverse relationship. Growth was minimal at 20°C and larvae rarely survived to the end of the experiment. Optimum temperature for the primary nursing of H. longifilis larvae was within the 25–27°C temperature range.  相似文献

The early osteological development of the skull (chondrocranium and osteocranium) of the pikeperch Sander lucioperca was studied. Specimens were reared at two temperatures, 15·5 and 18·0° C, from hatching until 47 and 43 days after fertilization (DAF), respectively. The skeletal elements characteristic for the different developmental stages were the same at both rearing temperatures, but pikeperch reared at 15·5° C reached the developmental stages later. The formation of the functional complexes, the neurocranium, jaws and suspensorium, branchial basket and hyoid arch, was evaluated chronologically. The focus was on skull development during several functional changes: at hatching, at the shift from endogenous to mixed feeding, the shift to exclusively exogenous feeding and upon reaching the final prey-capture mechanism. Growth in total length differed between fishes reared at the two temperatures, except during a phase of very slow growth from the end of the embryonic stage until the second larval stage. The latter phase, in which most of the bony elements of the viscerocranium started to form, was marked by high mortality. When exogenous feeding began, the growth rates at both temperatures increased distinctly and the first bony elements were formed in the neurocranium. Specimens reared at 18·0° C grew continuously, but those at 15·5° C showed a second period of slow growth and high mortality. Fish reared at 18·0° C reached the successive larval stages distinctly earlier than fish reared at 15·5° C.  相似文献

The rate of larval emergence from cysts of the beet eelworm in a variety of aqueous solutions containing organic and inorganic substances is significantly higher than the emergence rate in water. It is suggested that differences between larval emergence rates in monoamino-monocarboxylic amino-acids may be related to the lipid solubility of these substances and their ability to penetrate the egg membranes. The larval emergence rate in fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose was significantly higher than that in water, but in raffinose, arabinose and xylose the rate of emergence was no higher than in water. A high rate of larval emergence occurred in sodium chloride, potassium chloride and mercuric chloride, but not in magnesium chloride or calcium chloride. Experiments with several other organic solutions are described. There is an optimum concentration for larval emergence in beet diffusate. The osmotic pressure of the diffusate when maximum emergence occurred was 0·48 atm. Measurements of shrinkage of unhatched larvae in various concentrations of urea, sodium chloride and sucrose showed that decreasing rates of emergence at higher concentrations may be due to changes in the unhatched larvae brought about: by an osmotic effect. High concentrations of beet diffusate may have a similar effect.  相似文献
