Scoteinus balstoni is recorded from western Victoria, which constitutes a 350-mile extension of the previously known range in Western and South Australia. Measurements of the five Victorian specimens are stated. The species selects hollow trees and under roof-tops for diurnal retreats, where it frequently roosts within colonies of Tadarida planiceps . Breeding activity of three captive specimens is described, as are the early growth and development of a young one born in captivity.  相似文献

Seven species of Cladocera were recorded from the shallow, equatorial Lake George in Uganda, during the period 1967–72. Of these only three, Moina micrura Kurz, Ceriodaphnia cornuta Sars and Daphnia barbata Weltner, are found in the open water and they form a small proportion of the total zooplankton biomass, which is dominated by a cyclopoid copepod. All three species are found throughout the year and carry parthenogenetic eggs at all times. They are smaller species than those predominating in some other East African lakes and some comparisons are also made between C. cornuta and four other species of that genus studied in Great Britain. The mean body lengths and clutch sizes of ovigerous females of C. cornuta vary little through the year. This is, presumably, a reflection of the relatively constant environment in Lake George. Alona poppei is only found in the open water intermittently and is thought to be swept from the peripheral swamps during heavy rains.
The general scarcity of Cladocera in Lake George is thought to be due, either to a shortage of food particles of suitably small size in the phytoplankton, which is dominated by large blue-green algae, or to predation. Although Cladocera are certainly eaten by fish, quantitative data, with which to substantiate either of these hypotheses, is lacking.  相似文献

Two reconstructed specimens of Rhabdoxylon dichotomum are describedfrom Westphalian A coal balls from England and Belgium. Stemsdichotomize repeatedly with up to four petioles borne betweendichotomies. Each dichotomy is closely associated with a foliartrace. Petioles are up to 3 cm long. Unattached rachises reach6 cm in length without branching. All foliar members have asmall monarch vascular strand. Roots are diarch and arise fromthe stems in random arrangement. Foliar and cauline tracheidpitting is scalariform to reticulate. The presence of apicalzones in this genus is recorded for the first time. Notes are presented on the body size, behaviour, diet, and gut morphology ofChiropotes albinasus from the Rio dos Marmelos in southeastern Amazonas state, Brazil. Sections of Vaucheria zoospores fixed at various stages havebeen examined in the electron microscope. Changes in the organizationof the cytoplasm and the redistribution of its organelles aredescribed and correlated with observations of living sporesduring their transformation into vegetative cells. In particular,proof is given that the disappearance of the cilia involvesthe withdrawal of the fibrillar axes of these organs into thecytoplasm and that the disappearance of the transparent outerzone of the motile spore involves the inward movement of specialcytoplasmic vesicles which form a main component of this layer. As a result of improved fixation new structural details aregiven, the most important of which concern the cytoplasmic matrix,the boundary membranes of the nuclei, the golgi bodies and theirrelation to mitochondria, and the internal structure of thechloroplasts. With the aid of serial sections it is shown thatthe internal laminae of the chloroplast are connected with eachother in a special manner.  相似文献
