Understanding the life cycle of Neotropical odonate species is essential given our scant knowledge of this region. In this paper, we examine growth ratio between instars, development patterns, and active/passive feeding behavior of the Andean dragonfly Erythrodiplax abjecta (Rambur, 1842). Larvae were obtained from eggs laid by two females in the laboratory and were maintained at 12–34 °C in individual containers until either their emergence or their death. Larvae hatched 26–57 days after laying, and the total development time was determined as being 316 (SD ± 6.6) days, including 13 instars. Larval instars were characterized using six morphometric variables. The foraging behavior was analyzed considering the time of day and the percentage of the background covered by detritus. The growth ratios between successive instars averaged 1.9 for FW pad length, 1.6 for HW pad length and 1.2 for head width, head length, metathoracic leg length, and total length. Neither the active foraging nor the sit-and-wait foraging behavior were affected by either time of the day or the percentage of background covered by detritus. Erythrodiplax abjecta is univoltine and has a slow lifestyle associated with lentic perennial waters, where larval development and growth rates are low. We provide an equation to estimate the E. abjecta larval instars from field specimens.Given that our results were obtained from the eggs laid by only two females, further studies including a larger sample size are needed to validate their generality.  相似文献

Instars II and III of Polypedilum aviceps Townes, Polypedilum convictum (Walker), and Polypedilum illinoense (Malloch) can be identified to species by associating them with instar IV because key taxonomic characters remain relatively unchanged from instar to instar. Instars I cannot be identified to species or genus unless they are associated with older, identifiable larvae reared from the same egg masses. No single character evaluated on slide material can be used to clearly separate instars in all three species. Larvae of P. aviceps can be separated into instars based on any four of seven characters; P. convictum by either of two characters; and, P. illinoense by a combination of two characters. Changes in structures of instars II, III, and IV are described for all three species. Growth ratios for some structures are compared and discussed with regard to Dyar's Rule.  相似文献

Several species of Berothidae are known to be specialist predators of termites during their larval stages. A female of the Japanese berothid Isoscelipteron okamotonis (Nakahara, 1914) was captured in the field and laid eggs in captivity. Of 67 eggs, 20 hatched into larvae, 3 of 9 which pupated and 1 of which reached the adult stage. The first and third instars preyed on workers of the termite Reticulitermes speratus, although the second instars did not. Larvae did not show the specific predatory behaviors observed in Northern American relatives. Instead, they bound paralyzed termites with silk that was apparently used for hunting. This is the first record of an Old World berothid raised from egg to adult in the laboratory.  相似文献

Summary Studies on rapidly inducible resistance in trees against insect herbivores show substantial variation in the strength of responses. Here we report the results of a study which examined causes of this variation. We bioassayed the quality of leaves of two developmental phases (young vs. mature) of the mountain birch Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa by measuring the growth of two instars of Epirrita autumnata larvae. We used only short shoot leaves from trees of a natural stand, uniform in size and age. Damage was caused by larvae and artificial tearing of leaf lamina, varying the scale and time. We separated seasonal changes in plants from instar-dependent effects of the animals by testing experimental larvae in two subsequent growth trials. We found that only larval-made damage induced responses in leaves that made the leaves significantly poorer quality for the test larvae. Artificial damage induced only weak responses, and artificial canopy-wide damage even caused slight improvement of leaf quality. Cumulative leaf damage did not strengthen birch responses. Leaves that were in the expansion phase responded to damage while fully-expanded, mature leaves showed no response. The pattern of responses indicated that there might be physiological constraints: small-scale damage induced resistance against the larvae but largescale damage did not. Prevalent weather conditions might have modified these responses. Larvae of two instars and sexes, of low- and high-density populations responded to leaf damage similarly. However, prior experience of larvae with the host plant may have affected subsequent larval performance. Variation in rapidly inducible responses in birches was caused by plant characters rather than by test animals.  相似文献

1. Ontogenetic shifts in prey choice and predator behaviour can affect food‐web structure. Therefore, it is important to establish if the diet and feeding activity differ between life‐stages of the same species. This hypothesis was tested for second, third, fourth and fifth larval instars of Rhyacophila dorsalis by comparing their diel activity and feeding patterns. Second to fifth instars collected from two streams were used either for gut analyses or for observations of their activity and feeding patterns in three stream tanks. Food was provided in excess; being organisms living in bryophytes on top of a large stone in each tank, augmented by different‐sized larvae of Ephemeroptera, Simuliidae and Chironomidae. As few first instars for gut analyses were found in the field, the diet of first instars reared in the laboratory was also studied. 2. Larvae for gut analyses were taken 1 h before dusk or dawn (n = 50 larvae per instar for each day or night sample). First and second instars fed on the smaller food items with no significant day‐night differences in diet. Gut contents indicated a progressive trend from feeding chiefly at night in third instars to almost exclusively at night in fifth instars. Fourth and fifth instars fed on the larger food items, whilst the diet of the third instar larvae overlapped with that of both the earlier and later instars. 3. Diel activity patterns of single larvae differed between instars but not within each instar (n = 20 larvae per instar). Second instars were active throughout the 24 h, with peaks at dusk, around midnight, dawn and around midday. A similar pattern was shown by third instars but the peak of activity at midday was less than the other three peaks. Prey were captured only during these peaks for both instars. Fourth and fifth instars were most active, and fed only, at night. They used an ambush strategy to capture more active prey at dusk and dawn (e.g. Baetis, Gammarus), and a searching strategy to capture more sedentary prey during the night (e.g. chironomids, simuliids). These experiments provided support for the hypothesis under test. If competition and/or interference occur between instars, then it could be reduced between earlier and later instars because of differences in their diet and diel pattern of feeding activity.  相似文献

Microplitis mediator (Haliday) is a solitary endoparasitoid of larvae of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) and the oriental armyworm, Mythimna = Leucania separata (Walker). The preference and suitability of different instars of M. separata for M. mediator were determined under laboratory conditions at a constant temperature of 26 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and L14:D10 photoperiod. The selection coefficient revealed that M. mediator parasitized 1st to 4th instars, but preferred 2nd and 3rd instars. Seventy-one percent of parasitism was achieved within 24 h when the 2nd instars were used as hosts at a density of one parasitoid per 20 Larvae. Parasitoid egression and pupation were dependent on the host instar parasitized and occurred from the 1st through the 4th instar. The mean developmental time from egg to prepupae of M. mediator within 1st to 4th instars of the host was 8.27, 8.30, 8.30 and 9.20 days, respectively. Cocoon weights were lower when 1st and 2nd instars served as hosts rather than 3rd and 4th instars. The percentage of host larva that died before parasitoid egression declined as the age of the host increased, ranging from 26% to 2% for 1st–5th instars, respectively. The results of this study suggest that 2nd and 3rd instars of M. separata would be the best host stages for mass production of M. mediator in the laboratory and the best host instars to target for effective control in field releases.  相似文献

The larval development of the squat lobster Munida subrugosa from subantarctic waters of the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) was studied under controlled laboratory conditions of temperature, salinity, and food supply. Developmental times, survival, and growth of larvae and early juveniles were investigated. Hatching of the entire brood always occurred during one night. Larvae were kept in 100ml individual bowls with filtered seawater at 8 ± 0.5°C and fed with Artemia spp. nauplii three times a week. Larvae passed through 6 zoeal instars and one megalopa. Previously, only five zoeal instars were known from this species. Mean cumulative durations of the zoeal stages I to VI were: 20.5 ± 2.5, 33.9 ± 4.1, 43.3 ± 5.4, 52.6 ± 5, 61.2 ± 3.9, and 83days, respectively. By adding the 28days that a single megalopa took to metamorphose to crab I stage, the complete larval development lasted 111days. Highest mortality occurred prior to the moult from the zoea I to zoea II stage (79.21% ± 18.65%) and during the moult from zoea VI to megalopa (92.86%). Carapace length was 1.64 ± 0.06, 1.52 ± 0.16, 1.57 ± 0.26, 1.64 ± 0.21, 2.11 ± 0.35, and 2.58 ± 0.19mm, for zoeal stages I to VI, respectively. Carapace length of megalopae and crab I instars was similar (2.85 ± 0.28 and the 2.84 ± 0.05, respectively). Unlike other subantarctic decapods, which show a tendency towards abbreviated larval development and/or some degree of endotrophy, M. subrugosa shows an extended planktotrophic larval development synchronized with short seasonal plankton production in austral summers.  相似文献

Larvae of the moth Samea multiplicalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), developed more rapidly when their food plant, Salvinia molesta was richer in nitrogen. Larvae that fed on plants with less than 1.35% nitrogen during their first instar completed the larval stage in 18.0–24.2 days, after passing through six instars. In contrast, larvae that had fed on food richer in nitrogen during their first instar completed the larval stage in 14.1–17.4 days, and passed through five instars. Experience of nitrogen in later instars had little additional effect on total larval development time. Oöcyte complements of 1-day old adult females was correlated with the mean food nitrogen content over the larval period. Food nitrogen content experienced by larvae in earlier instars was as important as that in the final instars, in determining number of mature oöcytes, which suggests early conditioning of the nitrogen use effciencies of later instars.  相似文献

1. Ontogenetic changes during the life cycle of aquatic insects are important not only in life‐history studies but also in evaluating food‐web structure. They require information on the growth and number of larval instars but such information is lacking for many species, including Plecoptera. Therefore, the chief objectives of the present study were to determine inter‐ and intra‐specific differences in the number of larval instars in British populations of 24 species of stoneflies, to test Dyar’s hypothesis that growth followed a geometric progression, and to synthesise this information with previously published values for four British species. 2. Larvae were reared at constant temperatures in the laboratory from eggs from 63 populations (one to six populations per species). First instars from each population were divided into three batches and each batch was reared at one of three constant temperatures. For each species, the rearing temperature and source population had no significant effect on the mean size of each larval instar. 3. The relationship between the geometric mean length of each instar and instar number was well described by an exponential equation (P < 0.001, r2 > 0.9 for all species), thus supporting Dyar’s hypothesis. Only one species, Brachyptera risi, had the same number of instars for males and females (12–13). For the other 15 herbivorous species and the four smaller carnivorous ones, the number of instars was higher for females than males (range 11–16 for males, 12–17 for females). The larger size of the females was due to their additional instars, not a sex difference in growth rates. In contrast, there was a clear growth separation of the sexes after the 9th or 10th instar for the four largest carnivores. The number of larval instars was highest for these four species (range 16–19 for males, 18–23 for females), and females were much larger than males. 4. A multiple regression equation with data from the present and previous studies (n = 27) showed that variability in the mean length of the first instar and the maximum number of larval instars for each species accounted for 88% and 91% of the variability in the mean length of the final instar for males and females, respectively. 5. Values for Plecoptera in other countries were in general agreement with those in the present study, especially in the same families. Two old, but widely quoted, high values are doubtful. The present study and four previous ones provide a sound basis for ontogenetic studies on 28 species of Plecoptera and their role in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Larvae of four instars are described in the little known leaf-beetle species Chrysolina sahlbergiana Jacobson from the Minusinsk Depression. Artemisia spp. is recorded as its host plant. Short setae on small scleroids distinguish the described larva from those of other species of the subgenus Pezocrosita. According to this character, this larva is closely related to larvae of species of the arcto-alpine subgenera of Chrysolina Motsch. Ch. sahlbergiana is regarded as a trans-Sayan, depression-steppe petrophilous species.  相似文献

  • 1 This study documents the life history of the xylophagous elmid beetle, Lara avara, and estimates its contribution to wood degradation in Oregon streams. The life cycle was found to be 4 to 6 or more years long, with all but 2–3 months of that spent in the larval stage.
  • 2 Larvae grow through seven instars, taking about 1 year for instars 1–3, and from 3 to 5 or more years for instars 4–7.
  • 3 Last-instar larvae leave the water to pupate. Adults live approximately 3 weeks and occur from May to August. The eggs are deposited on submerged wood.
  • 4 Larvae probably obtain their nutrition by absorbing substances liberated into decaying wood by microbial activity. They do not produce their own cellulase, nor do they have a symbiotic gut flora similar to that of xylophagous cranefly (Tipulidae) larvae.
  • 5 Faecal production by L. avara larvae averaged 13% dry body wt d-1. This yields an estimate of faecal production of 1.6 g m-2 y-1 in Oregon Coast Range streams (about 0.3% y-1 of wood standing crop).

An investigation into the potential taxonomic value of leaf surface characteristics using large sample size and multivariate analysis was undertaken in Carex section Phacocystis. A case study examined micromorphological characters of the leaf surface for six members of the section in Britain. The six split into three groups based on distribution of stomata: Carex recta amphistomous, C. aquatilis/C. nigra epistomous, and C. bigelowii/C. elata/C. acuta hypostomous. There was considerable variation within samples in stomatal density and cell dimensions. Discriminant Analysis of nine quantitative characters clearly separated four species and a cluster of two species, C. elata and C. acuta. Multivariate analysis indicated that the intercostal cell lengths from both leaf surfaces, abaxial costal cell lengths, and widths of the adaxial costal and abaxial intercostal cells were taxonomically useful in this group and potentially of use within the genus.  相似文献

Farinocystis tribolii multiplied only in the fatbody of Tribolium castaneum larvae. In the advanced stages of infection, the fatbody was destroyed and the albuminoid granules were completely depleted. Larvae in late stages of infection were “C” shaped. Diseased pupae were flat and straight with the head and mouth parts not completely flexed with the pupal body. Infected pupae failed to develop into adults. Heavily infected adults were distended. Larvae of third, fourth, and fifth instars, although succumbing to the infection ultimately, continued to live even after the healthy larvae of the same age had entered pupation, indicating a prolongation of larval period. Molting was either affected or delayed in infected insects. F. tribolii infection induced a juvenile hormonal effect producing larval-pupal and pupal-adult intermediate forms. Ether extract of spores of F. tribolii when applied on pupae of T. castaneum and final instar nymphs of Dysdercus cingulatus produced adultoids.  相似文献

The life history, feeding relations and production of the stonefly Stenoperla prasina were studied for 16 months in the Selwyn River, South Island, New Zealand. Larval life is about 1 year with growth occurring in all months. Although emergence of adults was observed only from November to February, egg hatching probably occurred over an extended period as small larvae were present in most months. Larvae were mainly carnivorous except in early instars when most guts contained detritus. Larvae of a mayfly, Deleatidium sp. and a chironomid, Orthocladiinae sp. were the most important prey items. In April of two successive years the guts of most stoneflies examined were filled with diatoms (Gomphonema sp.) and filamentous algae which were abundant in the river only at these times. Algal feeding was not found in other months. Larvae of the main prey species, Deleatidium, were present in all months, being most abundant in summer and declining in numbers during winter. Maximum emergence occurred in March and April. The annual cycle of Deleatidium was diflicuit to interpret as larvae of all sizes were present in all months. Two generations probably occurred in a year, a fast-growing summer generation and a slower-growing and less synchronized winter generation. Mean annual standing biomass, annual production and turnover ratios (P/B) were calculated for both species. The latter were within the range of values given by Waters (1969) but may be subject to error from several sources. Shortcomings in the method used to estimate production are discussed.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster is sensitive to a variety of psychotropic and neurotropic drugs that alter neurotransmitter metabolism in humans. For many drugs the activity is a function of the stage of development of the organism. An example is the convulsant allylglycine (2-amino 4-pentenoic acid). Larvae were unaffected by a dose of allylglycine that was lethal for adults. Larvae that had been exposed to the drug continuously through three instars were able to pupate. In the pupae, which were no longer exposed to the drug, the pharate adults appeared to mature normally but subsequently died, usually before emerging from the puparium case. Allylglycine is known to inhibit mammalian glutamate decarboxylase. This enzyme is present in homogenates of Drosophila. Larvae possess a much smaller amount of glutamate decarboxylase than do adults. Allylglycine has a minimal effect on glutamate decarboxylase in vivo or in vitro.
