Plants enjoy their entire life exactly where they were initially rooted. Because of this fixed life pattern, plants have to devise a different type of strategy than animals to survive the numerous biotic and abiotic challenges. Many different plant hormones that act alone or in concert underpin these mechanisms. Brassinosteroids (BRs) collectively refer to plant-originated 5μ-cholestane steroids that elicit growth stimulation in nano-or micromolar concentrations. BRs that are biosynthesized using sterols as precursors are structurally similar to the cholesterol derived, mammalian steroid hormones, insect molting hormones and ecdysteroids. BRs have been known for decades to be effective in plant growth promotion. However, definitive evidence for their roles in growth and development remained unclear until the recent characterization of BRdwarf mutants isolated fromArabidopsis and other plants. This review aims to provide a cohesive summary of information obtained from the molecular genetic characterization of mutants that are defective in sterol and BR biosynthetic pathways.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are plant hormones that were isolated for the first time in the 1970s. This group currently includes more than 70 compounds that differ in their structure and physiological activity. BRs are present in plants in a free form or in the form of conjugates. BRs are known as plant growth regulators, but they also play a role in the plant response to environmental stresses. In the case of plants that are exposed to low/high temperature, exogenous BRs can counteract growth inhibition and reduce biomass losses as well as increase plant survival. BRs show a multidirectional activity in regulating the metabolism of plants exposed to extreme temperatures. The following BRs actions can be distinguished: changes in membrane physicochemical properties, regulation of the expression of selected genes (including stress-responsive genes), as well as indirect effects on metabolism through other hormones or signalling molecules (such as hydrogen peroxide). This review summarizes the current knowledge about the effects of BRs on the physiological and biochemical processes that occur in plants during exposure to low or high temperatures.  相似文献

Estrone, a steroid hormone, is identified in the monoecious Cucurbitaeeous plant, Lagenaria leucantha Rusby. The content of estrone changes with developmental stages. In young seedlings with only 2–3 leaves, there was no trace of estrone. Estrone was barely detectable in seedlings with 4–6 leaves. At that time no flowers were visible. In plants with 11–13 leaves, when flowers bad appeared, the content of estrone increased greatly. It is therefore postulated that estrone may be one of the hormones controlling flowering. GA3 and CEPA were used to shift the sex expression of the plant toward the male and female directions respectively. Estrone was present in both chemically induced male and female plants, indicating estrone alone does not play any special role in sex expression. It might be the balance of the male and female hormones that controls the sex expression of the plants. It is believed that flowering and sex expression are controlled by the same set of hormones, as early postulated by Hesiop-Harrison and other workers.  相似文献

In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the influence of exogenous mammalian sex hormones (MSH) (progesterone, β-estradiol and androsterone) on the morphological (root and shoot growth) and biochemical parameters (protein and sugar content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and lipid peroxidation and H2O2 levels) of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) plants growing under control conditions. The solutions of hormones prepared at different concentrations (10−4, 10−6, 10−9, 10−12 and 10−15 M) were sprayed once on the leaves of 7-day plants. The plants were harvested on 18 days after the hormone treatment. Although all of the hormones at the tested concentrations significantly increased plant growth, soluble protein and sugar contents, and antioxidant enzyme activities [superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX) and catalase (CAT)], they decreased H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation level when compared with control plants. The activities of SOD, POX and CAT reached to the highest levels at 10−6 M for progesterone, and 10−9 M for β-estradiol and androsterone, which maximum growth, protein and sugar contents were determined. The same concentrations also resulted in the lowest levels for H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation. It can be interpreted that the MSH improve plant growth and development by affecting some biochemical parameters including antioxidative system.  相似文献

Most flowering plant species are hermaphroditic, but a small number of species in most plant families are unisexual (i.e., an individ-ual will produce only male or female gametes). Because species with unisexual flowers have evolved repeatedly from hermaphroditic progenitors, the mechanisms controlling sex determination in flowering plants are extremely diverse. Sex is most strongly determined by genotype in all species but the mechanisms range from a single controlling locus to sex chromosomes bearing several linked locirequired for sex determination. Plant hormones also influence sex expression with variable effects from species to species. Here, we review the genetic control of sex determination from a number of plant species to illustrate the variety of extant mechanisms. We emphasize species that are now used as models to investigate the molecular biology of sex determination. We also present our own investigations of the structure of plant sex chromosomes of white campion (Silene latifolia - Melan-drium album). The cytogenetic basis of sex determination in white campion is similar to mammals in that it has a male-specific Y-chromosome that carries dominant male determining genes. If one copy of this chromosome is in the genome, the plant is male. Otherwise it is female. Like mammalian Y-chromosomes, the white campion Y-chromosome is rich in repetitive DNA. We isolated repetitive sequences from microdissected Y-chromosomes of white campion to study the distribution of homologous repeated sequences on the Y-chromosome and the other chromosomes. We found the Y to be especially rich in repetitive sequences that were generally dispersed over all the white campion chromosomes. Despite its repetitive character, the Y-chromosome is mainly euchromatic. This may be due to the relatively recent evolution of the white campion sex chromosomes compared to the sex chromosomes of animals. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Biological costs and benefits to plant-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
This review looks briefly at plants and their rhizosphere microbes, the chemical communications that exist, and the biological processes they sustain. Primarily it is the loss of carbon compounds from roots that drives the development of enhanced microbial populations in the rhizosphere when compared with the bulk soil, or that sustains specific mycorrhizal or legume associations. The benefits to the plant from this carbon loss are discussed. Overall the general rhizosphere effect could help the plant by maintaining the recycling of nutrients, through the production of hormones, helping to provide resistance to microbial diseases and to aid tolerance to toxic compounds. When plants lack essential mineral elements such as P or N, symbiotic relationships can be beneficial and promote plant growth. However, this benefit may be lost in well-fertilized (agricultural) soils where nutrients are readily available to plants and symbionts reduce growth. Since these rhizosphere associations are commonplace and offer key benefits to plants, these interactions would appear to be essential to their overall success.  相似文献

The recent origin of sex chromosomes in plant species provides an opportunity to study the early stages of sex chromosome evolution. This review focuses on the cytogenetic aspects of the analysis of sex chromosome evolution in plants and in particular, on the best-studied case, the sex chromosomes in Silene latifolia. We discuss the emerging picture of sex chromosome evolution in plants and the further work that is required to gain better understanding of the similarities and differences between the trends in animal and plant sex chromosome evolution. Similar to mammals, suppression of recombination between the X and Y in S. latifolia species has occurred in several steps, however there is little evidence that inversions on the S. latifolia Y chromosome have played a role in cessation of X/Y recombination. Secondly, in S. latifolia there is a lack of evidence for genetic degeneration of the Y chromosome, unlike the events documented in mammalian sex chromosomes. The insufficient number of genes isolated from this and other plant sex chromosomes does not allow us to generalize whether the trends revealed on S. latifolia Y chromosome are general for other dioecious plants. Isolation of more plant sex-linked genes and their cytogenetic mapping with fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) will ultimately lead to a much better understanding of the processes driving sex chromosome evolution in plants.  相似文献

Plant microbiota can greatly impact plant growth, defense, and health in different environments. Thus, it might be evolutionarily beneficial for plants to be able to control processes related to microbiota assembly. Dioecious plant species display sexual dimorphism in morphology, physiology, and immunity. These differences imply that male and female individuals might differently regulate their microbiota, but the role of sex in microbiota assembly has been largely neglected so far. Here, we introduce the mechanism of how sex controls microbiota in plants analogically to the sex regulation of gut microbiota in animals, in particular in humans. We argue that plant sex imposes selective pressure on filtering and constructing microbiota in the rhizosphere, phyllosphere, and endosphere along the soil–plant continuum. Since male plants are more resistant than female plants to environmental stresses, we suggest that a male host forms more stable and resistant plant microbiota that cooperate more effectively with the host to resist stresses. Male and female plants can distinguish whether a plant is of the same or different sex, and males can alleviate stress-caused damage in females. The impact of a male host on microbiota would protect female plants from unfavorable environments.  相似文献

Evolution of steroids such as sex hormones and ecdysteroids occurred independently in the animal and plant kingdoms. Plants use phytoecdysteroids (PEs) to control defense interactions with some predators; furthermore, PEs can exert beneficial influence on many aspects of mammalian metabolism. Endocrine disrupting compounds such as the estrogen agonist bisphenol A (BPA) are widespread in the environment, posing a potential hormonal risk to animals and plants. Adverse BPA effects on reproductive development and function are coupled with other toxic effects. BPA bioremediation techniques could be developed by exploiting some tolerant plant species.Key words: androgens, endocrine disrupting compounds, bisphenol A, estrogens, hormone receptors, phytoecdysteroids  相似文献

Plant growth and development is influenced by mutual interactions among plant hormones. The five classical plant hormones are auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid and ethylene. They are small diffusible molecules that easily penetrate between cells. In addition, newer classes of plant hormones have been identified such as brassinosteroids, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid and various small proteins or peptides. These hormones also play important roles in the regulation of plant growth and development. This review begins with a brief summary of the current findings on plant hormones. Based on this knowledge, a conceptual model about interactions among plant hormones is built so as to link and develop an understanding of the diverse functions of different plant hormones as a whole in plants.Key words: abscisic acid, auxin, brassinosteroids, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellins, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, plant peptide hormones  相似文献

Small-molecule plant hormones principally control plant growth, development, differentiation, and environmental responses. Nine types of plant hormones are ubiquitous in angiosperms, and the molecular mechanisms of their hormone actions have been elucidated during the last two decades by genomic decoding of model plants with genetic mutants. In particular, the discovery of hormone receptors has greatly contributed to the understanding of signal transduction systems. The three-dimensional structure of the ligand–receptor complex has been determined for eight of the nine hormones by X-ray crystal structure analysis, and ligand perception mechanisms have been revealed at the atomic level. Collective research has revealed the molecular function of plant hormones that act as either molecular glue or an allosteric regulator for activation of receptors. In this review, we present an overview of the respective hormone signal transduction and describe the structural bases of ligand–receptor interactions.  相似文献

Microorganisms capable of mobilizing phosphate promote plant growth, this activity being frequently accompanied by production of plant hormones auxins. However, the extent of contribution of these characteristics to promotion of plant growth remains unclear. Paenibacillus illinoisensis IB 1087 and Pseudomonas extremaustralis IB-Ki-13-1A strains were selected for their capacity to mobilize phosphates and to synthesize auxins in vitro. The effects of inoculating these bacteria on the content of mobile phosphorus in the soil as well as on the phosphorus and hormone content in wheat plants were studied and the observed responses were related to the changes in plant growth. Inoculation of bacteria into the soil increased P concentration in the plants suggesting their increased capacity for the efficient acquisition of phosphorus compounds, while concentration of mobile phosphorus in the soil was increased by its inoculation with bacteria only in the absence of plants. The treatment increased plants mass (to greater extent in the case of P. illinoisensis) in accordance with the increased level of auxins in the treated plant. Increased mass accumulation did not correlate with the potential ability of bacteria strains for production of auxins or phosphate mobilization in vitro. Our data indicate importance of increased auxin content in the plants for the stimulation of root growth and capacity for P uptake as influenced by growth-promoting bacteria.  相似文献

BackgroundBryophytes represent a very diverse group of non-vascular plants such as mosses, liverworts and hornworts and the oldest extant lineage of land plants. Determination of endogenous phytohormone profiles in bryophytes can provide substantial information about early land plant evolution. In this study, we screened thirty bryophyte species including six liverworts and twenty-four mosses for their phytohormone profiles in order to relate the hormonome with phylogeny in the plant kingdom.MethodologySamples belonging to nine orders (Pelliales, Jungermanniales, Porellales, Sphagnales, Tetraphidales, Polytrichales, Dicranales, Bryales, Hypnales) were collected in Central and Northern Bohemia. The phytohormone content was analysed with a high performance liquid chromatography electrospray tandem-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS).ConclusionThe apparent differences in conjugation and/or degradation strategies of growth hormones between liverworts and mosses might potentially show a hidden link between vascular plants and liverworts. On the other hand, the complement of stress hormones in bryophytes probably correlate rather with prevailing environmental conditions and plant survival strategy than with plant evolution.  相似文献

Hormone balance and abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Plant hormones play central roles in the ability of plants to adapt to changing environments, by mediating growth, development, nutrient allocation, and source/sink transitions. Although ABA is the most studied stress-responsive hormone, the role of cytokinins, brassinosteroids, and auxins during environmental stress is emerging. Recent evidence indicated that plant hormones are involved in multiple processes. Cross-talk between the different plant hormones results in synergetic or antagonic interactions that play crucial roles in response of plants to abiotic stress. The characterization of the molecular mechanisms regulating hormone synthesis, signaling, and action are facilitating the modification of hormone biosynthetic pathways for the generation of transgenic crop plants with enhanced abiotic stress tolerance.  相似文献

The morphology, growth and development of higher plants are strongly influenced by environmental stimuli on the earth, which affect the changes in the dynamics of plant hormones in plants. Qualitative and quantitative changes in plant hormones are the most important internal factor to regulate plant growth and development. Among them, auxin (IAA) is of most significant. There are numerous reports concerning the physiological roles of auxin in plant growth and development (Matthysse and Scott 1984). One of the characteristics of auxin is to have the ability of polar transport along the vector of gravity on the earth (Schneider and Wightman 1978), suggesting that the activity of auxin polar transport is also important for the growth and development of plants. It has recently been reported that the normal activity of auxin polar transport in inflorescence axis of Arabidopsis thaliana was required for flower formation (Okada et al. 1991, Ueda et al. 1992). Considering the above evidence together with the fact that gravity affects the morphology, growth and development of higher plants, gravity might affect the qualitative and quantitative changes in plant hormones including the activity of auxin polar transport. In this paper, we report the effect of microgravity condition simulated by a three-dimensional (3-D) or a horizontal clinostat on the activity of auxin polar transport in inflorescence axis of Arabidopsis thaliana.  相似文献
