The NGSS MS-ETS1 Engineering Design (1–4) is the focus of the article. Development of a challenging problem-based activity that is an improvement over the traditional egg drop competition is emphasized. Quantification of data collected and real-world relevance are two activity components that are viewed as improvements over the egg drop. The article describes a set of lessons that prepares pharmaceutical companies to drop medicine into the Amazon Rain Forest. Lessons 1–2 involve planning and parachute variable testing (e.g., weight, string length, number of strings, parachute size/shape, etc.) to measure changes in descent rates. Lesson 3 involves building a prototype using small dosage cups, parachute making materials and other random materials (e.g., larger cups, popsicle sticks, etc.). And, Lesson 4 has groups build a final parachute to drop an open container of liquid medication into a remote village. The challenge involves having to use an open container for the medication to remain effective. Due to expense, medication spillage is not permitted. Amount that spills provides a data point to assess performance.  相似文献

Tragopogon pratensis is a small herbaceous plant that uses wind as the dispersal vector for its seeds. The seeds are attached to parachutes that increase the aerodynamic drag force and increase the total distance travelled. Our hypothesis is that evolution has carefully tuned the air permeability of the seeds to operate in the most convenient fluid dynamic regime. To achieve final permeability, the primary and secondary fibres of the pappus have evolved with complex weaving; this maximises the drag force (i.e., the drag coefficient), and the pappus operates in an “optimal” state. We used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to compute the seed drag coefficient and compare it with data obtained from drop experiments. The permeability of the parachute was estimated from microscope images. Our simulations reveal three flow regimes in which the parachute can operate according to its permeability. These flow regimes impact the stability of the parachute and its drag coefficient. From the permeability measurements and drop experiments, we show how the seeds operate very close to the optimal case. The porosity of the textile appears to be an appropriate solution to achieve a lightweight structure that allows a low terminal velocity, a stable flight and a very efficient parachute for the velocity at which it operates.  相似文献

Objectives To determine whether parachutes are effective in preventing major trauma related to gravitational challenge.Design Systematic review of randomised controlled trials.Data sources: Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases; appropriate internet sites and citation lists.Study selection: Studies showing the effects of using a parachute during free fall.Main outcome measure Death or major trauma, defined as an injury severity score > 15.Results We were unable to identify any randomised controlled trials of parachute intervention.Conclusions As with many interventions intended to prevent ill health, the effectiveness of parachutes has not been subjected to rigorous evaluation by using randomised controlled trials. Advocates of evidence based medicine have criticised the adoption of interventions evaluated by using only observational data. We think that everyone might benefit if the most radical protagonists of evidence based medicine organised and participated in a double blind, randomised, placebo controlled, crossover trial of the parachute.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: A parachute mitral valve is defined as a unifocal attachment of mitral valve chordae tendineae independent of the number of papillary muscles. Data from the literature suggests that the valve can be distinguished on the basis of morphological features as either a parachute-like asymmetrical mitral valve or a true parachute mitral valve. A parachute-like asymmetrical mitral valve has two papillary muscles; one is elongated and located higher in the left ventricle. A true parachute mitral valve has a single papillary muscle that receives all chordae, as was present in our patient. Patients with parachute mitral valves during childhood have multilevel left-side heart obstructions, with poor outcomes without operative treatment. The finding of a parachute mitral valve in an adult patient is extremely rare, especially as an isolated lesion. In adults, the unifocal attachment of the chordae results in a slightly restricted valve opening and, more frequently, valvular regurgitation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old Caucasian female patient was admitted to a primary care physician due to her recent symptoms of heart palpitation and chest discomfort on effort. Transthoracic echocardiography showed chordae tendineae which were elongated and formed an unusual net shape penetrating into left ventricle cavity. The parasternal short axis view of her left ventricle showed a single papillary muscle positioned on one side in the posteromedial commissure receiving all chordae. Her mitral valve orifice was slightly eccentric and the chordae were converting into a single papillary muscle. Mitral regurgitation was present and it was graded as moderate to severe. Her left atrium was enlarged. There were no signs of mitral stenosis or a subvalvular ring. She did not have a bicuspid aortic valve or coarctation of the ascending aorta. The dimensions and systolic function of her left ventricle were normal. Our patient had a normal body habitus, without signs of heart failure. Her functional status was graded as class I according to the New York Heart Association grading. CONCLUSIONS: A recently published review found that, in the last several decades, there have been only nine adult patients with parachute mitral valve disease reported, of which five had the same morphological characteristics as our patient. This case presentation should encourage doctors, especially those involved in echocardiography, to contribute their own experience, knowledge and research in parachute mitral valve disease to enrich statistical and epidemiologic databases and aid clinicians in getting acquainted with this rare disease.  相似文献

We have characterized the meiosis of Olla v-nigrum by standard analysis, performed a NOR study using NOR banding, FISH of rDNA genes and sequential FISH/AgNOR analysis, and adapted the FISH methodology to Coccinellidae. The chromosome number determined at metaphase I was n = 9 + Xyp. At zygotene it was possible to identify the sex vesicle which presented a deeply stained heteropycnotic block. Chromosome X is much larger than the y and the two combine, forming a "parachute" in metaphase I. FISH analysis using a probe of rDNA genes 18S, 28S and 5.8S of D. melanogaster was used to map the genes in the sex vesicle. The NOR band showed high gene activity in this region. These results were confirmed using sequential FISH/Ag NOR analysis. The data obtained for Olla v-nigrum agree with the classical hypothesis raised to explain the type of sex chromosome association in a parachute format (Xyp) as being due to the presence of nucleolar material. The chromosome number and parachute configuration during metaphase I in this species agree with the basic karyotype of most Coleopterans. The major adaptation of the FISH method was the simultaneous denaturation and hybridization that permitted preservation of chromosome morphology, an essential factor when the chromosomes are small.  相似文献

The method of estimating human stress resistance by the dynamics of the regulatory-adaptive state is described. The regulatory-adaptive state has been evaluated by the parameters of cardio-respiratory synchronism in the normal state and in stress. Subjects with no changes in the regulatory-adaptive state or with its decrease by 5–6% have been included in the group with a high level of stress resistance. Subjects with a decrease of the regulatory-adaptive state by more than 50% in response to stress have been included in the low stress resistance group. The method has been tested in three models of stress: (1) examination (58 students); (2) parachute jumping (35 beginner parachute jumpers); (3) entrance to an emergency zone (30 rescuers). All three models are highly informative. Stress resistance levels have also been estimated by psycho-logical methods. The estimation of stress resistance by the dynamics of the regulatory-adaptive state allows characterizing the ability of a person to endure stress and can be included in the set of tests for staff recruitment in extreme professions.  相似文献

Goldenhar syndrome is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. The most frequent findings are vertebral defects, hemifacial microsomia and ear abnormalities. We present an 8-year-old boy with oculo-auriculo-vertebral (Goldenhar) syndrome. He also had a parachute mitral valve and growth hormone deficiency. Parachute mitral valve is a previously unreported finding while growth hormone deficiency was reported just in one case in the literature.  相似文献

[3H]PK 11195 binding to platelet membranes and plasma stress hormones were studied in soldiers at the beginning of a parachute training course, following 6 days of preparatory exercises, and after the fourth actual parachute jump. A slight reduction (15%; NS) in the number of peripheral benzodiazepine receptors (PBR) was detected at the end of the exercise period, prior to the first jump. Reduced (26%; P less than 0.05) density of PBR was observed immediately after the repeated actual jumps. Equilibrium dissociation constants were not affected by the stressful situation. Plasma cortisol and prolactin levels remained unaltered during the entire study period.  相似文献

This report describes the novel parachute technique of open distal anastomosis at the aortic arch replacement. Two Teflon felt cylindrical collars were initially placed on the anastomotic site of the descending aorta. All four to five outer loops of the stitches used in the parachute technique were tracked by the gathering suture. The anastomotic sutures and three gathering sutures were finally pulled simultaneously. The prosthetic graft and the aortic stump with Teflon felt were safely and completely anastomosed. Surgical or hospital death and serious complications were not found. The mean anastomotic duration (circulatory arrest duration) in 16 patients was 23 minutes. Our novel technique using a Teflon felt cylindrical collar and modified continuous suturing was not only safe but also reduced the duration of anastomosis and minimized blood loss. This technique is simple and can be applied to aortic valve replacement.  相似文献

Incorporating spatial criteria in optimum reserve network selection   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Considering the spatial location of sites that are to be selected for inclusion in a protected reserve network may be necessary to facilitate dispersal and long-term persistence of species in the selected sites. This paper presents an integer programming (IP) approach to the reserve network selection problem where spatial considerations based on intersite distances are taken into account when selecting reserve sites. The objective is to reduce the fragmentation of preserved sites and design a compact reserve network. Two IP formulations are developed which minimize the sum of pairwise distances and the maximum intersite distance between all sites in the reserve network, respectively, while representing all species under consideration. This approach is applied to a pond invertebrate dataset consisting of 131 sites containing 256 species in Oxfordshire, UK. The results show that significant reductions in reserve fragmentation can be achieved, compared with spatially unrestricted optimum reserve selection, at the expense of a small loss in reserve efficiency.  相似文献

Using a computational model for the population growth and dispersal of a model species in a fluctuating environment, we test three nature reserve geometries (one large, many small, and a self-similar distribution of reserve sizes) to determine which geometry maximizes species longevity. The self-similar distribution is a close approximation to the distribution of managed areas in the conterminous United States. We consider models with and without migration from or between reserve fragments and both short- and long-range dispersal mechanisms. The optimal geometry depends on the type of dispersal and on the relative probability of survival in protected and non-protected areas. When no migration is allowed from or between reserve fragments of the three geometries, many small equally sized reserves are the optimal geometry. When migration is allowed, the optimal geometry is a single large reserve when the survivability in non-protected areas is low and a self-similar distribution when the survivability is high.  相似文献

生境破碎是导致生物多样性损失的重要原因之一,避免生境破碎的一个有效方式是建立连续的自然保护区使物种可在保护区内自由移动。不加选择地把大片土地都转为保护区是实现连续的一个途径,但资源是有限的,应当以最优的方式分配。如何最优化设计生态上和经济上都有效的保护区成为生物保护领域一个重要议题。从一组备选地块中选择一部分组成自然保护区,这样的问题主要有两种解法:启发式方法和最优化方法。启发式方法虽然灵活且运算速度快但不能保证最优解因而可能导致稀缺资源的浪费,最优化方法保证得到的解是最优的但建模和运算存在困难。建立一个线性整数规划模型用于设计一个最小的连续保护区,用Dantzig剪切法消除循环确保形成一个连续的树,对应一个连续的保护区,检验了模型的计算效率。结果显示,模型可在合理时间内解决一个包含100个备选地块和30个物种的连续保护区设计问题,计算效率显著优于同类目的的其它方法。以美国伊利诺伊州Cache河流域11种濒危鸟类的保护区设计为例说明了该方法的应用,设计了两种情况下连续的保护区。讨论了模型的局限和数据问题。  相似文献

The expected number of species occurring in different numbers of reserves of the same total area is examined on different assumptions of the spatial distribution and the probability of extinction. The advantage of one large reserve or several smaller ones of equal total area depends on the spatial distributions of species and the stage after the establishement of reserves. In general, several smaller reserves maintain more species immediately after the establishments unless the spatial distribution are uniform or random, whereas one large reserve excels several smaller ones after some rare species have gone extinct unless the spatial distributions are strongly contagious. Since the extinction of rare species must be facilitated as the size of each reserve reduces, the area of a reserve should be larger than the critical area that ensures the persistence of the species. Hence it is concluded that one or a few large reserves are a better strategy in order to maintain the species diversity.  相似文献

松山自然保护区是北京市的国家级保护区,具有暖温带北段典型的自然景观,保护对象为天然油松林和落叶阔叶林森林生态系统。此次报道了松山自然保护区部分地区大型真菌的初步调查结果,采用目前国内外普遍使用的Ainsworth(1973)的分类系统进行分类。采集到的这些大型真菌隶属于2个亚门,4目,16科,31种,其中食用、药用菌23种,木腐菌7种,外生菌根菌7种,有毒真菌6种。松山自然保护区内有丰富的物种多样性,动植物资源比较丰富,有益的食用菌、药用菌及菌根真菌种类相对较多,菌物资源的开发与利用潜力较大。  相似文献

Various kinds of no-take areas (refuges, reserves) are gaining attention as conservation tools. The efficacy of reserves can be considered from the perspectives of providing baseline data sets, protecting the stock, maximizing yield to the fishery, or some combination of these. Regardless of the measure of effectiveness of a reserve, practical application requires the development of techniques for settling operational and policy questions such as how large a reserve should be. A simple model, involving population growth and harvest, is used to explore how the fraction of habitat assigned to a reserve affects the sustainability of a take and to frame the trade-off between control of harvest outside of the reserve and the size of the reserve. This exploration also leads to the discovery of a robust conservation invariant for reserves.  相似文献

An increasing number of marine mammal studies on physiology, behaviour and ecology rely on data, which have been collected from back-mounted devices, such as bio-logging tags and satellite transmitters. However, external devices may influence an animal’s hydrodynamics, behaviour and energy expenditure and, therefore, can impede the individual animal. To investigate the influence of external devices on seals, the water flow along a grey seal was simulated using computational fluid dynamics calculations. The simulations revealed several changes in forces and moments and thus balance, due to this device. The investigated satellite transmitter creates an average 12% increase of the drag coefficient. Additionally, there are significant relative transmitter-induced increases in pitching moment (32%) and lift (240%). The simulations also showed that the transmitter generates areas of decreased wall shear stress on the seal’s back. The results of this study demonstrate that external devices can change the hydrodynamics of the seal, which is expected to alter the seal’s physiology and behaviour and its use of the ecosystem. Long-term attachment may have adverse effects on the animal’s welfare. It is important to take these effects into consideration when studying tagged seals; otherwise, the value of the data obtained will be poor. Therefore, interpretations and extrapolations regarding ‘natural behaviour’ of animals in their ‘natural environment’ should only be made with great caution.  相似文献

通过野外调查、采集标本、分类鉴定和查阅文献相结合的方法对浙江省天目山国家级自然保护区悬钩子属植物的药用资源状况进行了较为系统的调查研究。结果发现 :该保护区有悬钩子属植物 1 6种和 1变种 ,它们都可以作为药用植物入药 ,且资源蕴藏量大 ,具有较高的开发利用价值。该项研究有助于该保护区悬钩子属药用植物的开发利用 ,对扩大该属植物药源和发展地方经济都将起到积极的促进作用  相似文献
