Abstract

We describe seven associated skeletal remains of Ischyrhiza mira, a Late Cretaceous sclerorhynchid sawfish, from the Campanian?lower Maastrichtian of Tennessee and Alabama, U.S.A., to decipher its paleobiology. Ischyrhiza mira had about 16 or 17 functional spines and about the same number of replacement spines on each side of the rostrum in which tall erect spines occupied the anterior one-half to two-third of the rostrum followed posteriorly by smaller spines. Whereas small hat-shaped dermal denticles were distributed on the rostrum, large thorn-like dermal denticles were present on the dorsal side of the body characteristic of sluggish, benthic batoids. We concur with the interpretation that specimens previously identified as rostral spines of Peyeria are actually enlarged thorn-like dermal denticles of a sclerorhynchid. We suggest that the ratio between the rostrum length and total body length of sclerorhynchids was generally about 1:3.27. Our vertebra-based ontogenetic analysis of I. mira gives an age estimate of 12.4 years for a 190-cm-long individual, the size at birth of about 0.5 m, and the maximum possible length for the species of no more than 3 m. Compared to extant pristid sawfishes, I. mira probably became sexually mature much earlier with a slightly faster rate of rostrum development.  相似文献

Pterygodermatites variabilis n. sp. (Nematoda: Rictulalarioidea) from the Indian gerbils Tatera indica collected from Sind and Baluchistan Provinces of Pakistan is described and compared with closely related species of the genus recovered from small mammalian hosts. The new species is characterised by a combination of the following characters: it possesses a regular crown of 26 and 14–38 denticles in male and female specimens respectively, 40–47 pairs of pre-vulvar spines, and a variable position of the vulva in specimens collected from different localities: it also differs in the size of the spicules and gubernaculum.  相似文献

Differences are observed in plasma membrane proteins of S. intermedius and S. droebachiensis sea urchin embryo cells isolated at middle blastula stage by means of acrylamide-gel electrophoresis in presence of SDS, urea or non-ionic detergents--Triton X-100 or Brij 35. Electrophoretic mobilities of plasma membrane proteins of sea urchin hybrid embryo malemale S. intermedius X femalefemale S. droebachiensis were identical with electrophoretic mobilities of plasma membrane proteins of maternal species S. droebachiensis. Three sea urchin embryo species under study had just the same biosynthesis of plasma membrane proteins at middle blastula stage detected by 14C-aminoacids pulse-labeling followed by membrane isolation, electrophoresis and gel-autoradiography.  相似文献

Morphological identification methods do not provide reliable and meaningful species identifications for taxa where morphological differences among distinct species are either absent or overlooked (i.e., cryptic species). For example, due to the minute nature of the morphological characters used to delineate diaptomid copepod species and the apparent potential for copepod speciation to occur with little or no morphological change (i.e., morphological stasis), morphological identifications of diaptomid species may not adequately capture their true species diversity. Here, we present results from a geographic survey of mtDNA sequences from populations across the geographic ranges of four North American diaptomid species—Leptodiaptomus minutus, Skistodiaptomus pallidus, Skistodiaptomus reighardi, and Onychodiaptomus sanguineus. Shallow mitochondrial DNA sequence divergences (maximum of 1.1%) among haplotypes of L. minutus from across its geographic range suggest that current morphological identification techniques reliably identify this species. In contrast, we found large mitochondrial DNA sequence divergences (14–22%) among populations within the currently recognized morphospecies of S. pallidus, S. reighardi, and O. sanguineus. However, pairwise sequence divergences within four distinct S. pallidus clades and within populations of S. reighardi and O. sanguineus were similarly low (maximum of 1.5%) as found within L. minutus as a whole. Thus, the S. pallidus, S. reighardi, and O. sanguineus morphospecies may be considered best as cryptic species complexes. Our study therefore indicates that morphological identifications, while sufficient for some species, likely underestimate the true species diversity of diaptomid copepods. As such, we stress the need for extensive taxonomic revision that integrates genetic, morphological, reproductive, and ecological analyses of this diverse and important group of freshwater zooplankton. Furthermore, we believe an extensive taxonomic revision will shed important insight into major questions regarding the roles of geography, phylogeny, and habitat on the frequency of cryptic species on earth. Eleven species of the genusVemakylindrus Bacescu, 1961 are known at present. A hitherto unknown species is described herein asV. cantabricus, sp. nov., and is compared with the more closely related congeneric species:V. hastatus (Hansen, 1920) andV. stebbingi Day, 1980.Vemakylindrus cantabricus may be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: (1) carapace densely covered by hooked denticles and hairs; (2) pseudorostrum shorter than carapace; (3) telson of “Diastylis type” with 5–6 pairs of lateral spines; and (4) external process of basis of third maxilliped with 4 long plumose setae.  相似文献

Abstract. The spine morphology of all established species of Diadema and Echinothrix, including 2 color morphs of E. calamaris, were examined externally and internally via transverse sectioning to identify diagnostic species features and to assess the morphological relationship between species. Forty‐nine different morphological characters were measured and analysed using ordination by multi‐dimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis. Specimens of Diadema paucispinum and D. setosum had very distinct spine structures. In D. paucispinum, the spines were more robust than those of other species of Diadema. This was evident in the spine's internal structure, with large, closely packed solid wedges, a small axial cavity, and rings of trabeculae throughout the spine's length. The spines in D. setosum were distinctive because of their length in relation to test size and the reduced flaring of their verticillations. The spines of other members of this genus were very similar to each other. Without careful sectioning, the spines from specimens of D. antillarum, D. ascensionis, D. mexicanum and D. savignyi were difficult to differentiate. The internal structures of spines for each species did, however, possess a combination of features that differentiated the species. Such features included the shape, orientation, and number of solid wedges, the presence or absence of spokes and rings of trabeculae between the solid wedges, and the presence or absence of tissue within the axial cavity. Individuals of Diadema palmeri also had spines morphologically similar to other species, however, the red pigmentation of these spines (in life and when preserved) made them easily distinguishable. The spine structures of the 2 species of Echinothrix were starkly different, while the white and brown color morphs of E. calamaris had morphologically distinctive ambulacral and interambulacral spines. The blunt, open‐tipped interambulacral spines, with reticular tissue present in the axial cavity of the white color morph, were easily distinguished from the pointed, closed‐tipped spines, with a hollow axial cavity found in the brown color morph. Such differences indicate that the brown color morph is either a subspecies or a separate species. Taken together the data show that each species has significant morphological differences in the structure of the spines. It is evident from our data that spine morphology is a useful tool to differentiate these commonly confused species.  相似文献

The skeleton of spines and tests of the species of sea urchins Strongylocentrotus intermedius, Mesocentrotus nudus, Scaphechinus mirabilis, and Echinocardium cordatum from the Sea of Japan is composed of a spongy stereom, consisting of calcite with a high content of magnesium. It was found that the tests and spines of the skeletons of sea urchins are composed of calcium–organic composite materials inlaid with other metals: Mg, Fe, Zn, and Rb. In the four species of sea urchins studied, the strength and other mechanical properties of the tests and spines differ and depend on the chemical composition and structural organization of their components. It was shown that the content of volatile substances correlates with their fragility or elasticity. It is revealed that the chemical composition of the tests of two species of the spherical sea urchins S. intermedius and M. nudus indicates significant differences between these two species of sea urchins.  相似文献

A new cottid, Icelinus pietschi sp. nov., and a rare species, Sigmistes smithi Schultz, were collected from intertidal zones in the southern Kuril Archipelago. Icelinus pietschi, represented by five specimens (34.8–42.2 mm SL) from Iturup Island, is distinguished from other species of Icelinus by having the dorsal scale rows terminating before the posteriormost base of the second dorsal fin, spines absent on the dorsal surface of the head, a single common opening of the terminal pores of the mandibular canal, a cirrus on the base of the nasal spine, and a slightly bifid uppermost preopercular spine without denticles dorsally. Six examples (36.8–42.9 mm SL) from Urup Island of Sigmistes smithi, previously known only rarely from the middle of the Aleutian Archipelago, constitute the first record of the species from the western North Pacific. Episodes of blood‐streaked stools are not uncommon in exclusively breast‐fed infants under 6 months of age. Such bleeding is thought to be associated with food protein‐induced proctocolitis, however the pathomechanism remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate intestinal microbiota and secretory immunoglobulin A in the feces of exclusively breast‐fed infants with blood‐streaked stools. Fecal specimens from 15 full‐term infants with blood‐streaked stools and 15 breast‐fed healthy infants were studied and the results compared. All infants had been delivered vaginally and exclusively breast‐fed. The fecal microbiota were investigated by phylogenetic analysis combined with culture methods for some bacterial species, and feces were assessed for the presence of fecal secretory immunoglobulin A by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Phylogenetic cluster analysis revealed four major clusters of fecal bacteria, cluster A being found only in healthy infants. The Bacteroides fragilis group was observed more frequently in controls than in patients (P < 0.05). In the controls, the predominant species belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae group was Escherichia coli, whereas in the patients it was Klebsiella (P < 0.05). Concentrations of secretory immunoglobulin A were high in one third of the healthy controls. In conclusion, the pathomechanism of rectal bleeding in exclusively breast‐fed infants may be related to differences in the composition of their intestinal flora.  相似文献

Neoskrjabinolepis (Neoskrjabinolepidoides) nuda n. sp. is described from the shrews Sorex unguiculatus (type-host), S. gracillimus, S. isodon and S. caecutiens on Sakhalin Island, Russia. The new species is characterised by: rostellar hooks 40–44 μm long and provided with small epiphyseal thickening of the handle; a long (95–100 μm) cirrus consisting of basal region with claw-shaped spines, a parabasal region with thin needle-shaped spines and an unarmed distal region; a cirrus-sac extending well into the median field; and 15–22 eggs per gravid uterus. A review of the species of Neoskrjabinolepis Spasskii, 1947 is presented. Currently, this genus includes nine species and is divided in two subgenera on the basis of strobilar development, which is gradual in the subgenus Neoskrjabinolepis (four species) and serial in the subgenus Neoskrjabinolepidoides Kornienko, Gulyaev & Mel’nikova, 2006 (five species). An amended generic diagnosis and an identification key to Neoskrjabinolepis spp. are presented.  相似文献

Sea urchins of the family Strongylocentrotidae have been important model systems in many fields of basic biology, yet knowledge of their evolutionary identities such as the phylogenetic relationships and divergence times remains limited. Here, I inferred molecular phylogenies of seven Strongylocentrotid species (Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, S. nudus, S. purpuratus, S. intermedius, S. droebachiensis, S. pallidus, and Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) from the analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences of 12SrDNA (349 nt), 12SrDNA-tRNA(gln) region (862 nt), and a combined sequence of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI, 1080 nt) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit I (NDI, 742 nt). The rate of sequence evolution and divergence times for each species were then estimated from the trees with reference to the time of separation between Strongylocentrotidae and Parechinidae, 35 to 50 MYA. The three trees agree well with each other, and the phylogeny is summarized by ((S. franciscanus, S. nudus), (H. pulcherrimus (S. purpuratus, S. intermedius (S. droebachiensis, S. pallidus)))). It is notable that the genus Strongylocentrotus consists of two distinct clades and that H. pulcherrimus branches off within Strongylocentrotus, implying assignment of a separate, monospecific genus to this species inappropriate. The rate of sequence evolution is calibrated to be 0.24%-0.34%/Myr in 12SrDNA, 0.25%-0.36%/Myr in 12SrDNA-tRNA(gln), and 0.65%-0.93%/Myr in COI-NDI combined sequences. S. purpuratus, in particular, shows the significantly higher rate of evolution in the 12SrDNA and 12SrDNA-tRNA(gln) regions compared to other species, suggesting careful use of its sequences in comparative studies. The two clades of Strongylocentrotidae seem to have split 13-19 MYA, and H. pulcherrimus branched off 7.2-14 MYA. In the former clade, S. franciscanus and S. nudus separated 5.7-8.1 MYA. In the latter clade, S. purpuratus, S. intermedius, and the clade of S. droebachiensis and S. pallidus diverged approximately 4.6-12 MYA, and the last two closest species separated 2.1-3.1 MYA.  相似文献

Ascospores from species of Debaryomyces and the Torulaspora-group of Saccharomyces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Ornamentation on ascospores of D. hansenii varied from short to long interconnected ridges or broad based, elongated conical protuberances. A spiral ridge system was detected on the ascospores of D. marama, but wart-like protuberances occurred on those of D. cantarellii, D. castellii, D. coudertii, D. formicarius, D. phaffii, D. vanriji and D. yarrowii. Ascospores of D. halotolerans did not have protuberances and the species appears to be identical with Pichia farinosa. Wart-like protuberances also were found on ascospores of S. delbrueckii, S. microellipsodes, S. rosei, S. inconspicuus, S. fermentati, S. montanus and S. vafer, but the ascospore surface of S. pretoriensis was covered by fine ridges. Short tapered ridges covered the ascospores of S. kloeckerianus.  相似文献

Abstract

The polyploid Salix alba L.–Salix fragilis L. hybrid complex still presents major difficulties in morphological identification. Most of the measured characters show a low diagnostic value for unambiguously identifying the parental species and their hybrid Salix × rubens Schrank due to continuous variation creating a large overlap in leaf and catkin morphology. Fragment length polymorphism of nuclear cyp73 intron markers was used to identify species and hybrids. This multilocus genotyping could be applied in a morphological analysis of trees from hybrid zones and allowed to demonstrate that morphological features of leaves and catkins clearly separated S. alba from S. fragilis. The hybrid individuals largely overlapped with both parental species but appeared to be morphologically more similar to S. fragilis than to S. alba. Cyp73 analysis of 11 Salix taxa revealed intermediate positions of two hybrid taxa with S. alba, namely S. × rubens and S. × sepulcralis Simonkai with their respective parental species S. fragilis and S. babylonica L. Additionally, the cyp73 intron multilocus genotypes clustered tetraploid taxa separately from diploid willows. Cyp73 introns are valuable markers for fast, reliable and straightforward genotyping in willow species and hybrids.  相似文献

A taxonomic review of three color morphotypes of the Sebastes inermis species complex established the existence of three valid species, viz. S. inermis, S. ventricosus, and S. cheni. The complex is defined by having two sharp lachrymal spines, the head weakly armed with nasal, preocular, supraocular and parietal spines, and the caudal fin not distinctly emarginated. Sebastes inermis, known from southern Hokkaido southward to Kyushu, Japan, and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, is characterized as follows: body dark red or light brown dorsally and laterally when fresh, pectoral fin extending beyond level of anus when depressed, pectoral-fin rays 15, anal-fin rays 7, pored lateral line scales 36–44 and gill rakers 31–37. Sebastes ventricosus, known from Iwate and Ishikawa Prefecture southward to Kyushu, Japan, and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, is characterized as follows: body somewhat greenish-black dorsally and dark silver ventrally when fresh, pectoral-fin rays 16, anal-fin rays 7–8, pored lateral line scales 43–49, and gill rakers 35–39. Sebastes cheni, known from Iwate and Akita Pref. southward to Kyushu, Japan, and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, is characterized as follows: body dark golden-brown dorsally and laterally when fresh, pelvic fin extending beyond anus when depressed, pectoral-fin rays 17, anal-fin rays 8, pored lateral line scales 37–46 and gill rakers 32–37. In the genetic analysis, the presence or absence of two AFLP fragments was completely fixed among the three species. Sebastes tokionis and S. guentheri are regarded as junior synonyms of S. inermis and S. ventricosus, respectively. A lectotype is designated for S. cheni, and a key to the three species of the S. inermis species complex provided.  相似文献

Females of the gall midge Rabdophaga terminalis (H. Loew) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) are very selective in their choice of host plants at oviposition. In preference trials, eggs were laid almost exclusively on S. alba and S. fragilis. One single oviposition occurred on S. viminalis but none on S. triandra, S. daphnoides or S. smithiana. Significantly more eggs were laid on S. alba than on S. fragilis. No differences were detected between clones of the same species regarding oviposition in laboratory trials. Within the species of S. alba, larger buds were preferred. However, this did not explain the preference of S. alba to S. fragilis. There was agreement between plant species selected by the females and survival of the larvae. No galls developed when eggs were transferred to species that were not oviposited on. There was no difference between S. alba and S. fragilis in larval growth, but after two weeks of development there was a significantly higher proportion of larvae in cocoons and pupae on S. alba. There was a negative linear relationship between weight of larvae and larval number per gall, indicating larval competition. The negative slope was steeper for S. alba than for S. fragilis when larvae were weighed after two weeks of development. There were some discrepancies between laboratory and field data on infestation of S. alba and S. fragilis. Higher infestation levels were related to denser stands in the field.
Résumé Etude de la ponte et des performances larvaires de Rabdophaga terminalis (Diptera; Cecidomyiidae) sur plusieurs espèces de saules avec examen particulier de l'influence de la taille des bourgeons.La ponte et les performances larvaires de la cécidomyie galliforme, Rabdophaga terminalis (H. Loew) ont été étudiées sur plusieurs espèces et clones de saules cultivés en Suède. Les femelles sélectionnent avec soin les plantes hôtes lors de la ponte. Dans des essais préférentiels, les oeufs ont été pondus presque exclusivement sur S. alba et S. fragilis; une ponte a été observée sur S. viminalis et aucune sur S. triandra, S. daphnoïdes ou S. smithiana. Significativement plus d'oeufs ont été pondus sur S. alba que sur S. fragilis. Les essais au laboratoire n'ont pas permis de déceler des différences entre clones de la même espèce. Chez S. alba, les plus gros bourgeons étaient préférés, mais ceci ne permet pas d'expliquer la préférence pour S. alba par rapport à S. fragilis. Il y a coïncidence entre les plantes choisies par les femelles et al survie des larves; il n'y avait pas développement de galles quand des oeufs étaient transférés sur des espèces qui n'avaient pas reçu de pontes. La croissance larvaire sur S. alba et S. fragilis ne présentait pas de différences, mais après 2 semaines de développement il y avait significativement plus de larves en cocons et pupes sur S. alba. La corrélation entre le poids des larves et le nombre de larves par cellule était linéaire et négative, ce qui indique une compétition larvaire; la pente était plus raide pour S. alba que pour S. fragilis quand les larves étaient pesées au bout de 2 semaines de développement. Il y a eu quelques discordances entre les résultats au laboratoire et les données de terrain sur la contamination de S. alba et S. fragilis. Les plus fortes contaminations étaient observées à l'extérieur sur pépinières denses.

Symphurus hondoensis Hubbs, 1915, originally described only from the holotype taken in 390–542 m in Suruga Bay Japan, has long been considered a junior synonym ofS. strictus Gilbert, 1905, known from waters off Hawaii, Japan, the Philippine Islands, and South Africa. Based on new information from the holotype and a specimen recently captured from deep waters (789–815 m) off Amami-Oshima Island, southern Japan,S. hondoensis is now established as a valid species.Symphurus hondoensis is unique among congeners in having the combination of a 1–2–3 pattern of interdigitation of proximal dorsal pterygiophores and neural spines, 10 abdominal vertebrae, 14 caudalfin rays, 111–113 dorsal-fin rays, 95 anal-fin rays, 59 total vertebrae, 105–106 scales in longitudinal series, blind side nearly as darkly pigmented as the ocular surface, and a black peritoneum. Recognition ofS. hondoensis increases the number of described species ofSymphurus in waters off Japan to three (S. orientalis Bleeker,S. strictus, andS. hondoensis), with at least one more underscribed species occurring in deepwater hydrothermal vent areas off southern Japan.  相似文献

Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Müller) and Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G. O. Sars) occur together over much of their ranges in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and remain distinct species, but no strong barrier to genetic exchange has been found in a study in the San Juan Islands. Co-occurrence of embryos of both species in the plankton indicates similar times of spawning. Ova of S. droebachiensis are fertilized by sperm of S. pallidus but the reciprocal cross gives a percent fertilization near zero. Hybrids of both crosses are viable with pigmentation resembling S. pallidus in the larval stage and S. droebachiensis in the adult stage. Ova of first generation female hybrids are more readily fertilized by sperm of S. pallidus, so that gene flow through female hybrids is more likely to be from S. droebachiensis to S. pallidus than the reverse. Male hybrids were not tested. S. droebachiensis and S. pallidus from deeper waters have lower fecundity than shallow water S. droebachiensis, which suggests that in the deeper waters individuals are food limited. The hypothesis that S. pallidus uses the sterile male technique to reduce reproductive output of S. droebachiensis is considered and rejected.  相似文献

Willows of the Salix albaSalix fragilis complex, native to western Eurasia, represent typical invaders of floodplain ecosystems worldwide. Introduced to South America by European settlers probably at the end of the nineteenth century, their distribution has increased significantly along the rivers in Northern Patagonia. This case study carried out mainly in the area around Lake Nahuel Huapi aims to analyze clonal structures and their spatial distribution using molecular markers as well as to relate the observed patterns to settlement history and life history traits of this species complex. Leaf material from 171 trees was collected along selected river floodplains in Northern Patagonia and genotypes were determined at six microsatellite loci. Including 62 reference samples of the S. albaS. fragilis complex from German rivers, Probability of Identity (P ID) was calculated and a Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) conducted. From the altogether thirteen different genotypes detected, one dominant genotype (female) formed monoclonal stands along most of the studied river stretches. The maximum linear distance between the most remote ramets of this clone was 790 km. Evidence arose that the colonizing process so far is exclusively based on vegetative propagation in the focal study area and is obviously attributable to the pronounced brittleness of the hybrid parent S. fragilis. However, outside this area the occurrence of male trees and a diversity of genotypes indicate that evolutionary processes by recombination are involved within the willow complex. Therefore, an increase in genotypes can be assumed when male individuals and therefore sexual reproduction would appear in the area around Lake Nuhuel Huapi. This could be a crucial point for the long-term invasion success of the taxa when climatic and other environmental conditions will change in Southern Argentina.  相似文献
