In the present study, the correlation was examined between pre-morbid personality traits and the occurrence of aggressive behaviour in residents of a psychogeriatric nursing home. The participants in the study were the close relatives of 39 residents of a psychogeriatric nursing home. These residents were selected on the basis of two subscales of the BOP assessment scale for elderly patients: Aggressive and annoying behaviour, and mental disability. Residents were divided into two groups: one group did not display aggressive behaviour, the other group displayed a great deal of such behaviour. The groups were comparable with regard to the degree of mental disability. To ascertain pre-morbid personality traits, use was made of the hetero-anamnestic personality questionnaire (HAP) and the Quick Big Five (QBF). We found no significant differences in any of the premorbid personality traits between the two groups. We could not confirm the conclusion of other authors that emotional lability (neuroticism) is a personality trait which makes people susceptible to developing aggressive behaviour. In conclusion, our study did not confirm the hypothesis that pre-morbid personality traits are useful to explain the occurrence of aggressive behaviour in residents of a psychogeriatric nursing home.  相似文献

This study is based on the outcomes of the program "Privacy In Nursing Homes" that has been initiated by the Dutch Department of Health in the late 90's. In this study, personnel of 74 nursing homes were asked to reflect on the way they treat residents. The attitudes of personnel were measured with a questionnaire that contains 80 propositions about their behaviour towards residents. The propositions can be reduced to five factors: kindness, structural environment, control, freedom to choose, and respect. First, we give the general results on these five factors. After that we give insight in the correlations between the five different aspects of treatment and the results of regression analysis. The general conclusion is that the behaviour towards residents in nursing homes at the beginning of the 21st Century is far from optimal. Residents most notably lack personal freedom and control over their received care and their way of living. This result is especially worrying because client conformed care has been an important point of attention for some time now. Another important conclusion is that the care for residents has a positive relation with the mangement policy of an organization and so, it is possible to improve the care.  相似文献

Recently the Law on Formal Admission to Psychiatric Hospitals was evaluated for the second time. This law aims to protect the legal position of psychiatric patients, who have been involuntarily admitted. This patient group includes psycho-geriatric patients who are admitted to residential and nursing homes for which this is indicated. In this article the part of the evaluation concerning the internal legal position of psycho-geriatric patients is reported. This part of the study investigated both the knowledge of the law in practice and its correct application, as well as the suitability of the law for this domain of health care. The conclusion can be drawn that residential and nursing homes are aware of the laws purposes, but health care practitioners find it hard to follow certain aspects of the law's procedures, especially regarding the use of restraints. The main reason for this is that the Formal Admission Law was designed for a psychiatric setting, which cannot easily be translated to the position of psycho-geriatric patients. The suggestion is made that the Government will develop new legislation, which reflects special characteristics of psycho-geriatric care. Meanwhile health institutions have to take measures in order to improve the legal position of patients in this sector.  相似文献

Continuing growth in the number of impaired elderly persons necessitates a continued reliance on nursing homes to care for at least those who are most impaired or most lacking in other supports, despite dissatisfaction over the quality of nursing home services and anxiety about the costs. Nursing home care now costs more than $30 billion annually, half of which comes from governmental sources. The Medicaid program, in particular, is central to all aspects of the nursing home industry. Private long-term care insurance is unlikely to solve the problem of nursing home financing. Rationalizing public expenditures will hinge critically on greater clarity as to just what roles nursing homes are expected to fulfill in the system of care, especially how they are supposed to relate to other services provided to Medicare beneficiaries.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00510.x Edentulism and dental caries in Victorian nursing homes Objectives: The aim of this project was to investigate edentulism and dental caries in nursing home residents in Victoria, Australia. Background: The Australian population is ageing with a growing number of people living in nursing homes. These residents are at increased risk for dental caries, have more teeth present now than at any time in the past 50 years and often have difficulty maintaining adequate oral hygiene. Materials and methods: Clinical dental examinations were conducted at 31 nursing homes in Melbourne and regional Victoria between May 2005 and June 2006. A total of 510 residents were examined out of 1345 eligible participants. Socio‐demographic and medical history was collected via questionnaire. Results: Just over half of the residents were dentate (53.9%), and dentate residents had a mean of 14.4 teeth present and 2.66 untreated decayed teeth. Residents who required total assistance with oral hygiene had more decayed teeth and fewer filled teeth than residents who did not require assistance. Conclusions: Nursing home residents in Victoria are retaining an increasing number of natural teeth and have more tooth surfaces at risk for dental caries. Untreated dental caries was a significant problem for residents, particularly for those who are dependent on others for their daily oral hygiene care.  相似文献
