Romantic love is one of our most potent and powerful emotions, but very little is known with respect to the hormonal and psychological mechanisms in play. Romantic love is thought to help intimate partners stay committed to each other and two mechanisms have been proposed to mediate this commitment: increased attention towards one's partner or deflected attention away from other potential partners. Both mechanisms find support in the literature. We explored the potential influence of each of these mechanisms by assessing women's ability to identify (ID) body odors originating from their boyfriend, a same-sex friend, and an opposite-sex friend and the relationship between this ability and the degree of romantic love expressed towards their boyfriend. We hypothesized that an increase in attention towards one's partner would render a positive correlation between ID of a boyfriend's body odor and degree of romantic love; conversely, we hypothesized that attention deflected away from other potential partners would render a negative correlation between ID of an opposite-sex friend's body odor and degree of romantic love for the boyfriend. Our results supported the deflection theory as we found a negative correlation between the degree of romantic love for the subjects' boyfriends and their ability to ID the body odor of an opposite-sex friend but not of their boyfriend or same-sex friend. Our results indicate that romantic love deflects attention away from potential new partners rather than towards the present partner. These changes are likely mediated by circulating neuropeptides and a testable model is suggested. 相似文献

The evolution of eusociality through kin selection was analyzed by simple population genetical models. Models were solved analytically with no approximation. The main results are
- Sex ratio in reproductives in a colony of haplodiploid species does not affect the direction of evolution, contrary to the hypothesis ofTrivers andHare (1976). Female biased sex ratio increases the rate of evolution irrespective of its direction.
- The only factor that determines the direction of evolution is the balance of benefit and cost of altruism of workers.
- The value of ratio of benefit to cost of altruism of workers when the change of gene frequency of altruistic allele does not take place is unity in both haplodiploid and diploid species. There is no theoretical reason that the eusociality through kin selection evolves more easily in haplodiploidy than in diploidy, contrary to the hypotheses ofHamilton (1964) andTrivers andHare (1976).
- The larger the colony size is, the lower the rate of evolution is irrespective of its direction.

Inbreeding avoidance is predicted to induce sex biases in dispersal. But which sex should disperse? In polygynous species, females pay higher costs to inbreeding and thus might be expected to disperse more, but empirical evidence consistently reveals male biases. Here, we show that theoretical expectations change drastically if females are allowed to avoid inbreeding via kin recognition. At high inbreeding loads, females should prefer immigrants over residents, thereby boosting male dispersal. At lower inbreeding loads, by contrast, inclusive fitness benefits should induce females to prefer relatives, thereby promoting male philopatry. This result points to disruptive effects of sexual selection. The inbreeding load that females are ready to accept is surprisingly high. Our natural body odor goes through several stages of age-dependent changes in chemical composition as we grow older. Similar changes have been reported for several animal species and are thought to facilitate age discrimination of an individual based on body odors, alone. We sought to determine whether humans are able to discriminate between body odor of humans of different ages. Body odors were sampled from three distinct age groups: Young (20-30 years old), Middle-age (45-55), and Old-age (75-95) individuals. Perceptual ratings and age discrimination performance were assessed in 41 young participants. There were significant differences in ratings of both intensity and pleasantness, where body odors from the Old-age group were rated as less intense and less unpleasant than body odors originating from Young and Middle-age donors. Participants were able to discriminate between age categories, with body odor from Old-age donors mediating the effect also after removing variance explained by intensity differences. Similarly, participants were able to correctly assign age labels to body odors originating from Old-age donors but not to body odors originating from other age groups. This experiment suggests that, akin to other animals, humans are able to discriminate age based on body odor alone and that this effect is mediated mainly by body odors emitted by individuals of old age. 相似文献

Behavioural ecologists have long assumed that animals discriminate between their kin and non-kin, but paid little attention to how animals recognize their relatives. Although the first papers on kin recognition mechanisms appeared barely 10 years ago, studies now appear frequently in journals of animal behaviour. Initial findings reveal that kin recognition abilities are surprisingly well-distributed throughout the animal kingdom. Yet an understanding of the evolutionary and ecological significance of these abilities demands further analyses of the components of kin recognition mechanisms and the social contexts in which they are expressed. Many controversies and unresolved issues remain, and experimental approaches to these problems promise to continue making kin recognition an important, rapidly moving discipline within behavioural ecology. 相似文献

Odors often produce different sensations when presented in front of the nose or intraorally, when eaten. It is a long-standing question whether these differences in sensations are due, for example, to the additional mechanical sensations elicited by the food in the mouth or additional odor release during mastication. To study this phenomenon in detail, a stimulation technique has been developed that allows controlled ortho- or retronasal presentation of odorous stimuli. Results from psychophysical, electrophysiological, and imaging studies suggest that there are clear differences in the perception of ortho- and retronasal stimuli. This 'duality of the sense of smell' is also observed in a clinical context where some patients exhibit good retronasal olfactory function with little or no orthonasal function left, and vice versa. The differences between ortho- and retronasal perception of odors are thought to be, at least partly, due to absorption of odors to the olfactory epithelium, which appears to differ in relation to the direction of the airflow across the olfactory epithelium. 相似文献

Viable airborne microbial counts are commonly used in indoor air quality (IAQ) assessment, but studies linking the microbial counts to a specific type of indoor microbial contamination are limited. We hypothesize that the airborne microbial counts can differentiate air-cooling units with and without complaints of urine and body odors. The keratinolytic property of some isolated bacteria prompts to the hypothesis that keratinase is present in the units to break down keratins, structural proteins that form human skin scales, as sources of amino acids and ammonium to produce the odors. Seven bacterial species and four fungal species were identified in the units and room air. Airborne Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Methylobacterium organophilum counts contributed the most to the microbial dissimilarities of units with and without odor complaints. Keratinolytic bacteria and a methylotrophic bacterium were abundant in the units. All the units contained ammonium, and keratinase activity was higher in the units with odor complaints. Extracellular keratinase activity was more effective at 20 °C than at 30 or 4 °C. Keratinolytic bacteria produced high levels of ammonium in the culture with skin cells. Viable airborne microbial counts can help IAQ inspectors to identify potential odor-causing air-cooling units. Keratins may be broken down in the units and associated with the odor complaints. 相似文献

An algorithm has been developed for the identification of unknownpatterns which are distinctive for a set of short DNA sequencesbelieved to be functionally equivalent. A pattern is definedas being a string, containing fully or partially specified nucleotidesat each position of the string. The advantage of this vaguedefinition of the pattern is that it imposes minimum constraintson the characterization of patterns. A new feature of the approachdeveloped here is that it allows a fair simultaneoustesting of patterns of all degrees of degeneracy. This analysisis based on an evaluation of inhomogeneity in the empiricaloccurrence distribution of any such pattern within a set ofsequences. The use of the nonparametric kernel density estimationof Parzen allows one to assess small disturbances among thesequence alignments. The method also makes it possible to identifysequence subsets with different characteristic patterns. Thisalgorithm was implemented in the analysis of patterns characteristicof sets of promoters, terminators and splice junction sequences.The results are compared with those obtained by other methods.

The ability to recognise kin requires the individual to possess a variety of abilities. Individuals must produce a cue which
indicates relatedness, they must process this cue to determine relatedness and then must act on this cue. Research has concentrated
on the first and final stage of this process, i.e., the cues of kinship and kin correlated behaviour. Little attention has
been paid to how individuals process cues to determine relatedness. This paper discusses how individuals ‘recognise’ kin,
the exhibition of kin correlated behaviour and considers the role of the MHC in these processes. Two broad theories have emerged
to explain how individuals recognise their kin: either a recognition gene(s) or some experiential mechanism. In mammals there
is no evidence to suggest that recognition (the processing of the cue) is under genetic control but rather is the result of
experience, learning about related individuals during development. Moreover studies on kin recognition in the domestic dog
suggest that all kin are not recognised by the same process but different classes of kin, parents, siblings may well be recognised
using different means. Studies of kin correlated behaviour suggest that the behaviour exhibited towards kin by Mongolian gerbils
is mediated by the environment. Factors of environmental familiarity, sex and developmental age all affect the response of
individuals to kin and non‐kin. In these situations the ability to recognise kin does not change but the exhibition of kin
correlated behaviour changes according to environmental conditions. These studies indicate that kin recognition may not be
the ‘unified’ process previously thought and thus any explanations of the proximate and ultimate causation of kin recognition
need to encompass this complexity. The question remains of whether the MHC is complex enough to do so.

A new method to detect remote relationships between protein sequences and known three-dimensional structures based on direct energy calculations and without reliance on statistics has been developed. The likelihood of a residue to occupy a given position on the structural template was represented by an estimate of the stabilization free energy made after explicit prediction of the substituted side chain conformation. The profile matrix derived from these energy values and modified by increasing the residue self-exchange values successfully predicted compatibility of heatshock protein and globin sequences with the three-dimensional structures of actin and phycocyanin, respectively, from a full protein sequence databank search. The high sensitivity of the method makes it a unique tool for predicting the three-dimensional fold for the rapidly growing number of protein sequences. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献
