In situ rates of egg production and hatching success are reportedfor Calanus simillimus, one of the most abundant calanoid speciesin peri-Antarctic regions, during the Italian ‘Italics’cruise in the Straits of Magellan in March-April 1995. Low fecundity(8.6 eggs female–1 day–1) and fecal pellet production(0.8 fecal pellets female–1 day–1) in this periodindicate that the species was feeding very poorly. Sixty-sixof the 126 females sampled did not produce eggs and 80 of thesedid not produce any fecal pellets during the 24 h period ofincubation. Striking abnormal naupliar and embryonic developmentwas recorded in 81.8% of the eggs spawned. Aberrant eggs didnot undergo normal cleavage, and failed to develop to hatching.Deformed nauplii were asymmetrical and presented strong anatomicalanomalies in the total body length and number of swimming appendages. These results are discussed in the light of recent findingson the causes of low hatching success in copepods.  相似文献

The goals of this study were to determine rates of ingestionand fecal pellet release, and their variability, for individualplanktonic copepods over extended periods of time (>20 min).Ingestions and rejections of individual cells of the diatomThalassiosira eccentrica by adult females of the calanoid Paracalanusaculeatus were directly quantified by observing individual copepodscontinuously at cell concentrations ranging from 0.1 toli mm3l–1.Average ingestion rates increased with increasing food concentration, but were not significantly different between 0.3 and 1.0 mm3l–1(9.8 and 32.7 µg Cl–1) of T.eccentrica. Rates ofcell rejections were low and similar at 0.1 and 0.3, but weresignificantly higher at 1.0 mm3 l–1. The coefficientsof variation for average ingestion rates of individual copepodshardly differed between food concentrations, ranging from 17to 22%, and were close to those for average fecal pellet releaseintervals which ranged from 15 to 21%. A comparison betweenindividuals at each food concentration found no significantdifferences at 1.0; at 0.1 and 0.3 mm3l–1, respectively, ingestion rates of four out of five females did not differ significantlyfrom each other. Average intervals between fecal pellet releaseswere similar at 0.3 and 1.0 mm3l–1 of T.eccentrica, butsignificantly longer at 0.1 mm3 l–1. Fecal pellet releaseintervals between individuals were significantly different ateach food concentration; these significant differences wereattributed to rather narrow ranges of pellet release intervalsof each individual female. Potential sources/causes of variabilityin the sizes and rates of copepods in the ocean are evaluated. 3Present address: Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory,2205 Commonwealth Boulevard, Ann Arbor, Ml 48105, USA  相似文献

Pyrosomas are the large group of pelagic tunicates whose trophicrole in pelagic communities has not yet been sufficiently studied. We ran across a local area of high concentration of the mostwidespread and commonest species of pyrosomas, Pyrosoma atlanticum,450 miles off the Congo river mouth. The following was estimated:gut pigment content, defecation rate, organic carbon and pigmentcontent of fecal pellets, and sinking rate. Based on these dataand the measured number of pyrosomas colonies the grazing impacton phytoplankton and the fecal pellet flux were calculated.During the night swarms of 50–65 mm P.atlanticum removed53% of phytoplankton standing stock in the 0–10 m layer;sparsely distributed pyrosomas consumed only 4%. The grazingimpact in the 0–50 m layer was only 12.5 and <1% respectively. The fecal pellet flux resulting from nocturnal feeding of P.atlanticumwhile swarming made up 1.4–1.6 x 106 pellets m–210 h–1 or 305–1035 mg C m–2 10 h–1 and1.4 x 105 pellets m–2 10 h–1 or 87.4 mg C m–210 h–1 while non-swarming. Incubation experiments showedthe rapid degradation of fecal pellets at 23°C: the lossof pigment and carbon content was {small tilde}60–70%after 45 h. We believe that given the sinking rate of 70 m day–1the main part of fecal material does not leave the upper watercolumn and is retained in the trophic web of the epipelagiclayer.  相似文献

The total and heterotrophic bacterial microflora of gut andfecal pellets of the copepod Temora stylifera was studied inthe coastal zone of the northwestern Mediterranean basin. Digestivetracts and feces were always found to contain bacteria. Withmean values close to 1011 cells ml–1and 1010 colony-formingunits (CFU) ml–1, both total and heterotrophic communitiesfound in fecal pellets largely exceeded the corresponding bacterialmicroflora observed in surrounding seawater (105 cells ml1 and103 CFU ml). In the same way, the frequency of dividingcells and mean cell volumes increased, respectively, from 3%and 0.12µm3 in seawater to >6% and 0.24 µm3 infecal pellets. The bacterial community structure was investigatedby carrying out 29 morphological and biochemical tests on 147isolated strains. Although Pseudomonas was always the most frequentlyencountered genus, the bacterial communities found in copepodfecal pellets clearly differ from those inhabiting seawater.Vibrio species, which were not detected in seawater microflora, were always present in fecal pellet communities. The close correspondenceobserved between the potential metabolic characteristics ofthe fecal bacterial communities isolated from a subantarcticdeposit feeder (Mytilus edulis) and from zooplankton in thisMediterranean study suggests that the fecal community differentiationis an even more general feature.  相似文献

During ice-free periods, seston ranges from 10 to 600 and averages29.2 mg dry wt 1–1 in Lake Balaton, the largest shallowlake in Central Europe. Most (80–99%) of the seston consistsof 1–10 µm sized mineral particles. The abiosestoncauses permanent food limitation in the ingestion of the ediblephytoplankton (1–22 µm fraction) by Daphnia cucullataand D.galeata. The postembryonic development time of D.galeataincreases and its fecundity decreases with increasing abioseston. The fecundity and the mortality of D.galeata are balanced atan abioseston concentration of 20.0 mg dry wt 1–1.  相似文献

Ingestion and clearance rates, feeding behaviors and life historyvariables of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris were evaluatedover a range of food concentrations encountered in nature (0.01–3.0mm3 1–1 of Isochrysis galbana). Ingestion rates increasedand clearance rates decreased with increasing food concentration. No maximum feeding thresholds were observed over the range ofalgal concentrations offered. Weight-specific ingestion ratesdecreased with increasing body weight. Feeding behaviors suchas mandibular activity, abdominal claw rejections of cloggedfeeding structures and feeding appendage activity decreasedat a food level of 0.3 mm3 l–1 of l. galbana. Peniliaavirostris had very poor survivorship at extremely low (0.01mm3 l–1 and high (3.00 mm3 l–1) food levels. Mortalitywas hardly affected at food levels of 0.03–1.0 mm3 l–1Reproduction did not occur at food levels of  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, the bacterial flora of the zooplanktonmicrobial environments seawater, fecal pellets and associatedwith the external and internal surfaces of the copepod Acartiatonsa(Dana) were examined. The bacteria associated with fecal pelletswere dominated by Bacillus spp., Cytophaga/Flavobacterium spp.,Vibrio spp. and Pseudomonas spp. The same genera were foundin the seawater (0.22 7mu;m filtered) in which the pellets wereincubated. The bacteria showed a characteristic growth succession, and the abundance increased several orders of magnitude in theseawater during incubation of the pellets, indicating growthand proliferation based on the disintegrating/degrading fecalpellets. A carbon budget calculation revealed that organic matterfrom degrading fecal pellets could cover the carbon demand forthe growing bacterioplankton. The composition of the bacterialcommunity in the seawater and the fecal pellets also indicateda colonization of the pellets from bacterioplankton. The compositionof the bacteria associated with the copepods showed that bacterialgenera characterized as surface associated were preferentiallyassociated with fecal pellets, animal surfaces and intestines. This suggests a specific intestinal flora in the cultivatedcopepods composed of 103 culturable bacteria per intestine (colony-formingunits, c.f.u.) or 105 bacteria per intestine (acridine orangedirect counts, AODC), possibly colonizing the intestine passivelyduring filtration of algae. The activity of the bacterial communitieswas examined by the numencal ratio c.f.u.:AODC, where 1–19%of the bacteria were found active, with no significant differencebetween microbial environments.  相似文献

The fecundity and somatic growth rates of Calanus agulhensisand Calanoides carinatus, the dominant large calanoid copepodsin the southern Benguela upwelling system, as well as the fecundityof several other common copepods, were measured between Septemberand March of 1993/94 and 1994/95. Mean egg production of mostcopepods was low at >30 eggs female-1 day-1 {Calanoides carinatus23.7, Calanus agulhensis 19.0, Neocalanus tonsus 16.1 and Rhincalanusnasutus 26.1), whereas the mean fecundity of Centropages brachiatuswas significantly greater (83.6 eggs female–1 day-1).This study also presents the first comprehensive field estimatesof the fecundity of Nanno-calanus minor (mean: 26.1 eggs female–1day–1, range: 0.0–96.2 eggs female–1 day–1)and of somatic growth of N6 and all copepodite stages of Calanoidescarinatus (decreasing from 0.58 day–1 for N6 to 0.04 day–1for C5). Somatic growth rates of Calanus agulhensis also declinedwith age: from 0.57 day1 for N6 to 0.09 day1 for C5. Data ongrowth rates were used to assess the relative importance offood [as measured by total chlorophyll (Chi) a concentration],phytoplankton cell size (proportion of cells >10 µm)and temperature to the growth of copepods. Multiple regressionresults suggested that fecundity and somatic growth rates werepositively related to both Chi a concentration and phytoplanktoncell size, but not to temperature. Although it was not possibleto separate the effects of Chi a concentration and phytoplanktoncell size, data from previous laboratory experiments suggestthat copepod growth is not limited by small cells per se, butby the low Chi a concentrations that are associated with theseparticles in the field. Despite growth not being directly relatedto temperature, a dome-shaped relationship was evident in somespecies, with slower growth rates at cool (<13°C) andwarm (>18°C) temperatures. The shape of this relationshipmirrors that of Chi a versus temperature, where poor Chi a concentrationsare associated with cool and warm temperatures. It is concludedthat the effect of food limitation on growth of copepods outweighsthat of temperature in the southern Benguela region. Sourcesof variability in relationships between growth and Chi a concentrationare discussed.  相似文献

In situ filtration responses of Daphnia galeata to changes in food quality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the stoichiometric study of phyto–zooplankton interactions,a controversy exists about how Daphnia species regulate theirfeeding rate when submitted to low-quality food (i.e. high dietarycarbon:phosphorus [C:P] ratio). In this study, we gathered dataover 3 years on in situ clearance rates of a Daphnia galeatapopulation, by conducting grazing experiments from April 1998to October 2000 in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Grand-Duchyof Luxembourg). Observed clearance rates (2.5–13.5 mLindividual–1 day–1, mean 7.0 mL individual–1day–1) were correlated with population and environmentalvariables. Mean body size of Daphnia individuals was the bestpredictor of clearance rate (r2 = 0.639), followed by watertemperature (r2 = 0.262) and P concentration in the seston (r2  相似文献

The seasonal development of bacteria was studied in the hypertrophiccoastal lagoon Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (Caribbeancoast of Colombia). This large but only 1.5 m deep lagoon issubject to strong seasonal variations of salinity from almostfully marine (April/May) to brackish conditions in October/November.Chlorophyll ranged from 6 to 182 µg L–1, and grossprimary production amounted to 1690 g C m–2 per year.Total bacterial number (TBN) ranged from 6.5 to 90.5 x 109 cellsL–1 and bacterial biomass (BBM) from 77 to 1542 µgC L–1, which are among the highest ever reported for naturalcoastal waters. Neither TBN nor BBM varied significantly withsalinity, phytoplankton or seston concentrations. Only the bacterialmean cell volume showed a significant relation to salinity, being highest (0.066 µm3) during the period of increasingand lowest (0.032 µm3) during decreasing salinity. Bacterialprotein accounted for 24% (19–26%) and phytoplankton proteinfor 57% (53–71%) of total seston protein. The ratio (annualmean) of bacterial carbon to phytoplankton carbon was 0.44 (range0.04–1.43). At low phytoplankton abundance [chlorophylla (Chl a) < 25 µg L–1], bacterial carbon wasalmost equal to phytoplankton biomass (i.e. the mean ratio was1.04). In contrast, at Chl a > 100 µg L–1, BBMwas low compared to phytoplankton biomass (the mean ratio was0.16). In general, BBM varied less than phytoplankton biomass. Most probably, the missing correlation between bacterial andphytoplankton variables was due to (i) organic material partlyderived from allochthonous sources serving as food resourcefor bacteria and (ii) a strong resuspension of bacteria fromthe sediment caused by frequent wind-induced mixing of the veryshallow lagoon.  相似文献

The size, composition and distribution of particles in the watercolumn were surveyed in a shallow area (1 m depth) of a tropicallagoon (Cte d'Ivoire) during a sequence of wind-induced resuspension.Water samples were collected hourly near the surface duringone tidal cycle. Three characteristic periods were distinguished:a calm period with low wind speed (average 1.2 m s–1 awindy period with wind speed >3 m–1 s (range between4 and 6 m s–1) inducing sediment resuspension and a relaxationperiod during the decrease of wind velocity. From the analysisof several parameters (particle size and volume, bacteria. pico-and nanophytoplankton, ciliates and detritus), sediment resuspensioncaused a regular injection of particles from the bed. The finestparticles (1.5–6 µm: chlorophytes such as Chiorellaspp., picocyanobacteria such as Synechococcus) were the firstto be affected by wind-induced turbulence, whereas large particles(6–12 µm: diatoms. cyanobacteria such as Lyngbiaspp.) were dispersed into the water column at the highest windspeed. The fate of the different seston components differedaccording to their size. Therefore, wind-induced resuspensioncould greatly influence the food web organization through thequantity, quality and size of edible particles available ata given time.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal egg production rates (Er) and egg hatchingsuccess in the copepods Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicuswere measured in the North Sea from March to September. Foodavailability was monitored by chlorophyll and protist concentrationsand three size fractions of seston fatty acids. Seasonal andspatial distribution and production differed between the species.Calanus finmarchicus was found only offshore of the 50-m isobath, with decreasing Er (37–28 eggs female–1 day–1)from March to July. Calanus helgolandicus had two abundancepeaks, in spring and autumn, with a low in May during whichtime the highest Er were observed (38 eggs female–1 day–1).At other times, Er in C. helgolandicus remained lower than inC. finmarchicus (  相似文献

A reverse-phase h.p.l.c. technique was used to estimate theconcentration of chlorophyll b in phytoplankton cultures, fecalpellets of Calanus pacificus, and suspended paniculate matterfrom the Central North Pacific, Oregon coastal waters, and DabobBay (a temperate fjord in Puget Sound, WA, USA). The purposewas to assess the distribution of this pigment in the euphoticzone and its effect on the fluorometnc estimation of phaeopigments.Analyses of natural waters confirm high chlorophyll b concentrations(median mass ratio of b:a > 0.3) at the depth of the chlorophylla maximum in tropical waters while values for temperate planktonare relatively low (median mass ratio of chl b:a = 0.05) andpatchy. Zooplankton fecal pellets showed a significant enrichmentin chlorophyll b, suggesting grazing as a mechanism to explainhigh concentrations of this pigment at the bottom of the euphoticzone. It is estimated that the presence of chlorophyll b couldcause an average overestimation of phaeopigment concentrationby the fluorometnc technique of 38% between 0 and 200 m in theCentral North Pacific. This effect is more pronounced at thelayer of chlorophyll b maximum (120–140 m). 1Present address: Marine Biology Research Division, A-002, ScrippsInstitution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA  相似文献

Ammonium release rates by individual marine copepods (Eucalanuspileatus) were examined kinetically over successive 10-min intervalsafter the animals were exposed to three concentrations of thediatom Thalassiosira fluviatilis as food. Food concentrationsspanned those expected in the natural environment. "Well-fed"(3 mm3 T. fluviatilis l–1) copepods released ammoniumsignificantly (p<0.05) faster than those fed zero or lowconcentrations of food, but differences were not dramatic. Meanexcretion rates (± SE) for animals removed from foodfor 18 –22 h [30 ± 6 nmol NH4(mg ash free dry weight)–1h –1] were 60% of those for "well-fed" animals [49 ±8 nmol NH4 (mg ash free dry weight)–1 h–1]. Continuedhigh release rates after extended periods without food suggestthat E. pileatus must feed frequently in nature to maintainan adequate nitrogen balance. Depending on food concentration, animals released ammonium at rates ranging from 40 to > 100%of their N ingestion rates over the previous 18–22 h.Long-term (4–6 h) kinetic excretion experiments with "well-fed"animals indicated that, on average, release rates decreasedwith time after food removal, but patterns varied among individualcopepods. In addition to ammonium release, o-phthalaldehydereactive amino acid nitrogen was occasionally released by E.pileatus in large "spurt events" lasting from 20 to 60 min. 1GLERL Contribution No. 283  相似文献

The extent of chlorophyll (Chi) a degradation into colorlessproducts by the copepod Acartia clausi was determined by measuringgut fluorescence prior to fecal pellet production. The efficiencyof pigment degradation of animals fed at different concentrationsof Thalassiosira weiss-fiogii varied between 30.56 and 94.05%,and the quantity of pigments lost during gut passage was directlyrelated to total ingestion. The role of feeding history in pigmentdestruction was tested. The fraction of ingested Chi a degradedby copepods acclimated to a high food concentration (15 ng Chla ml–1) was greater than the fraction degraded by thoseacclimated to a low food concentration (1.5 ng Chl a ml–1).The percentage of ingested Chl a that A.clausi transformed intofluorometrically undetected compounds was not constant. At present, knowledge of the pigment destruction process indicates thatChi a and Chi --derived pigments are not considered useful quantitativetracers of the feeding activity of copepods. The results ofthis study suggest a reassessment of the application of thegut fluorescence method to evaluate grazing activity of thecopepod A.clausi  相似文献

Annual variations of egg production rate (EPR) and clutch sizeof Calanus sinicus, as well as body size of females (prosomelength and dry weight), were investigated at a series of stationsin the Southern Yellow Sea by onboard incubation. Calanus sinicuswas spawning in all the 11 cruises investigated, and the annualvariation of EPR was bimodal. Monthly average EPR was highestfrom May to July, respectively, 5.97, 5.36 and 6.30 eggs female–1d–1, then decreased dramatically to only 1.37 eggs female–1d–1 in August and attained the lowest 1.07 eggs female–1d–1 in October. In November, average EPR increased againto 4.31 eggs female–1 d–1. Seasonal variation ofclutch size was similar to EPR, except that it decreased graduallyafter August rather than dramatically as did EPR. Prosome lengthof females was maximum in May and minimum in October, but dryweight was highest in November. Monthly average EPR correlatedbetter with prosome length than dry weight, while clutch sizewas rather determined by dry weight of females. It is suggestedthat egg production of C. sinicus was active during two discontinuousperiods when both surface and bottom temperature fell into itsfavorite range (i.e. 10–23°C), and different reproductivestrategies were adopted in these two reproductive peaks: otherthan the highest EPR, longer prosome length was also achievedby C. sinicus from May to July, while females in November developedshorter bodies but accumulated more energy for reproduction.  相似文献

Selectivity-size spectra, clearance and ingestion rates andassimilation efficiencies of Acartia clausi (Copepoda), Peniliaavirostris (Cladocera) and Doliolum denticulatum (Doliolida)from Blanes Bay (Catalan Sea, NW Mediterranean) were evaluatedin grazing experiments over a wide range of food concentrations(0.02–8.8 mm3 L–1 plankton assemblages from BlanesBay, grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels). Acartiaclausi reached the highest grazing coefficients for large algae>70 µm (longest linear extension), P. avirostris forintermediate food sizes between 15 and 70 µm, and D. denticulatumfor small sizes from 2.5 to 15 µm. Penilia avirostrisand D. denticulatum acted as passive filter-feeders. Acartiaclausi gave some evidence for a supplementary raptorial feedingmode. Effective food concentration (EFC) decreased linearlywith increasing nutrient enrichment for D. denticulatum andfollowed domed curves for A. clausi and for P. avirostris withmaximum values at intermediate and high enrichment levels, respectively.Clearance rates of crustacean species showed curvilinear responseswith narrow modal ranges to increasing food concentration. Clearancerates of D. denticulatum increased abruptly and levelled intoa plateau at low food concentrations. Mean clearance rates were13.9, 25.5 and 64.1 mL ind.–1 day–1, respectively. No clearance could be detected for A. clausi at food concentrations<0.1 mm3 L–1 and for P. avirostris at food concentrations  相似文献

The layer of daytime concentration of Calanus ponticus (VC andVI C) performing daily vertical migrations and the layer of‘winter stock’ aggregation are confined to the depthof maximal gradient of the main pycnocline under an unusuallysharp oxycline. The concentration layer thickness ranges from2 to 20–30 m and the Calanus concentration in it is >250ind. m–3, sometimes being 3500 ind. m–3 and evenmore. The population in the concentration layer is divided intotwo ecological groups: I, feeding and migrating specimens ofcopepodite stages V and VI, their body lipid contents being25–60 µg min.–1; and II, non-feeding and non-migratingspecimens of copepodite stage V, their body lipid contents being100–150 µg ind.–1. The relationship with oxygenconcentration was studied in both ecogroups. The experimentsshow that specimens of ecogroup II can exit at an oxygen concentrationof 0.06 ml 1–1, but at such concentration falling intoanabiosis. They die at 0.04 ml O2 1–1. Estimates of respirationof the group II specimens (‘winter stock’) showthat lipids they store are sufficient for 7 months' survival.Depth of Calanus concentration is determined by water densityrather than concentration of oxygen.  相似文献

Cladoceran in situ feeding rates on natural bacteria labelledwith [methyl-3H] were studied in parallel with feeding ratedeterminations on 14C-labelled Chlorella in a hypertrophic subtropicalreservoir (Lake Hartbeespoort) through spring and summer (1986/87).Community filtration rates (CFR5) on bacteria and algae weresimilar, but selection for Chlorella (relative to natural bacteria)increased from midsummer in association with declining bacterialdensity and increasing dominance of ‘inedible’ componentsof the natural phytoplankton. Species-specific filtration rates(SSFRs) were determined for Daphnia pulexllongispina, Ceriodaphniareticulata, Diaphanosoma excisum, Bosmina longirostris and Moinamicrura during their respective seasonal occurrence in the studyperiod. SSFRs on algae and bacteria increased with body length(L, mm) in all species apart from Bosmina. Species-specificdifferences in absolute feeding rate (FR, ml animal–1day–1), the slope of the FR-L relationship and bacteriaselectivity were evident. The feeding rate of all cladoceranson bacteria is described by the power equation FR 5.231L1.42FR values on bacteria relative to FR values on algae averaged  相似文献

Seventeen size-fractionation experiments were carried out duringthe summer of 1979 to compare biomass and productivity in the< 10, <8 and <5 µm size fractions with that ofthe total phytoplankton community in surface waters of NarragansettBay. Flagellates and non-motile ultra-plankton passing 8 µmpolycarbonate filters dominated early summer phytoplankton populations, while diatoms and dinoflagellates retained by 10 µm nylonnetting dominated during the late summer. A significant numberof small diatoms and dinoflagellates were found in the 10–8µm size fraction. The > 10 µm size fraction accountedfor 50% of the chlorophyll a standing crop and 38% of surfaceproduction. The <8 µm fraction accounted for 39 and18% of the surface biomass and production. Production by the< 8 µm fraction exceeded half of the total communityproduction only during a mid-summer bloom of microflagellates.Mean assimilation numbers and calculated carbon doubling ratesin the <8 µm (2.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 0.9day–1)and<5 µm(1.7 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 0.5day–1)size fractions were consistently lower than those of the totalpopulation (4.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 1.3 day–1)and the <10 µm size fraction (5.8 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 1.4 day –1). The results indicate that smalldiatoms and dinoflagellates in fractionated phytoplankton populationscan influence productivity out of proportion to their numbersor biomass. 1Present address: Australian Institute of Marine Science, P.M.B.No. 3, Townsville M.S.O., Qld. 4810, Australia.  相似文献
