Two sessions of relaxation instructions were administered under high and low expectancy conditions. Fifty-four college students scoring high on a self-report measure of anxiety served as subjects. Live and taped abbreviated progressive muscle relaxation instructions and a self-relaxation condition were equally effective in reducing within-session self-report and physiological indices of anxiety. High expectancy instructions led to greater reductions in heart rate than did low expectancy instructions. Factors controlling anxiety reduction during relaxation therapies are discussed.This experiment was submitted by the first author in partial fulfillment for a master of science degree at VPI and SU. Generalizability theory is an extension of classical reliability theory that allows multiple sources of measurement error in an experimental design to be investigated simultaneously. In the present study, generalizability theory was used to evaluate measurement error in psychophysiological test procedures used to differentiate tension headache patients from normal controls based upon measures of electromyographic (EMG) responding. Thirty-three subjects who met diagnostic criteria for tension-type headache and 40 normal control subjects who rarely or never experienced headache participated in two laboratory sessions. EMG activity of head and neck muscles was recorded while subjects performed baseline, relaxation, choice reaction time, psychomotor tracking, and cold pressor tasks. Variance components were computed for an experimental design having subjects nested within experimenters and crossed with sessions and replications. Generalizability coefficients were computed for combinations of various numbers of sessions and replications. The generalizability of EMG measures was highly variable, depending on the experimental conditions in force. The largest sources of measurement error were attributed to the unique responsiveness of individual subjects under a particular set of treatment conditions. For some stress tests currently in use, data from several testing sessions may need to be averaged in order to achieve acceptable levels of generalizability. Generalizability greater than 0.80 can be expected only rarely when data are collected during a single session. In the research setting, low generalizability may account for the failure of EMG-based stress tests to differentiate tension headache patients from controls during stressful task performance. In the clinical setting, the generalizability of information derived from "stress profiling" or muscle "scanning" techniques, which depend on results obtained during a single testing session, is doubtful.  相似文献

Thirty-five subjects participated in (1) a pretreatment session during which arousal was measured while subjects anticipated and then viewed a stressful film; (2) four 20-min treatment sessions during which subjects received either contingent EMG biofeedback (biofeedback treatment), instructions to attend to a variable pitch tone (attention-placebo control), instructions to relax as much as possible (instructions-only control), or instructions to sit quietly (no-treatment control); and (3) a posttreatment session that was identical to the pretreatment session. Results indicate that when compared to the subjects in the control conditions, subjects who received EMG biofeedback were not effective in reducing frontalis EMG levels during treatment or while viewing the stressful film, but they were effective in reducing frontalis EMG levels while anticipating the stressful film. There was no evidence that EMG biofeedback influenced either skin conductance or self-reports of arousal.This research was supported in part by Bio-Medical and General Research Fund grants from the University of Kansas to David S. Subjects in this experiment viewed a stressful film and then received one of five treatments: (a) practice at increasing heart rate without feedback, (b) practice at decreasing heart rate without feedback, (c) practice at increasing heart rate with feedback, (d) practice at decreasing heart rate with feedback, or (e) a control condition. Subjects then returned on the following day, practiced controlling heart rate again (or sat quietly, for subjects in the control condition), and then viewed the stressful film again. Heart-rate results indicated that subjects in both feedback groups manifested tonic decreases in heart rate from the first viewing of the film to the second, whereas subjects in both of the no-feedback groups manifested no changes in heart rate between viewings, and subjects in the control condition manifested increases in heart rate between viewings. However, all five groups of subjects displayed phasic increases in heart rate during specific stressors in the film during both viewings. The tonic changes in heart rate noted between viewings of the film for the feedback groups were not accompanied by parallel changes in electrodermal activity or respiration rate. Self-report ratings of subjects' beliefs about ability to control heart rate were significantly correlated with the tonic changes in heart rate that were noted between viewings of the stressful film.  相似文献

This paper reports an outcome study of coping skills intervention to help adolescents manage stress associated with the transition from elementary school to junior high. In a randomized design, sixth grade students from four elementary schools were pretested, then two schools each were assigned to an intervention condition and to a control condition. Intervention condition subjects received eight sessions of instruction and practice in coping skills intervention. Following intervention, all subjects were posttested. At posttest and relative to control condition subjects, intervention condition subjects scored more positively on measures of problem solving, assertive direct refusals, adequacy of information about junior high school, ability to handle stress, ability to deal with peer pressure, and general readiness for junior high school.  相似文献

A sensitive electronic device (static sensograph) was used to record fine body movement in two similar groups of normal high school girls at intervals over a few months. One group received weekly instructions in the technique of autogenic training (AT) and was urged to practice it daily, whereas the other (control group) received no such instructions. In the AT group mean body movement (eyes closed, sitting position) decreased with every session. At 3 and 4.5 months after training was begun (sessions 3 and 4, respectively) mean body movement of this group was significantly lower than in the first session, before training was begun. In the fourth (but not earlier) sessions the AT group also showed a significant decrease in mean body movement during AT compared with the periods immediately preceding and following it. In contrast, the control group showed no significant differences in means between any sessions or periods within a session. The results suggest that fine body movement as measured by a static sensograph is a useful parameter for studying AT and probably other relaxation procedures.Visiting professor from the Australian National University, supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.  相似文献

The work gives the results of comparative analysis of gamma-rhythm (30-40 Hz) spectral power and synchronization indices in the healthy subjects both in normal situation and before the examination with that of depressive patients with the first episode, in the rest condition and during cognitive tests performance. It is demonstrated that gamma-rhythm spectral power in frontal and temporal areas of depressive patients was significantly higher than that in the norm. In stressful situation the number of differences of healthy subjects from depressive patients decreased in the rest condition and in Kraepelin test. Spatial imagination revealed more significant differences between depressive patients and healthy subjects both in normal and in stressful situations. Gamma-rhythm synchronization level was the same in healthy subjects both in the rest condition and during the tests performance, but in stressful situation it increased in the latter situation as well as in depressive patients. Thus, in the most cases stressful situation decreases the differences of EEG indices between healthy subjects and depressive patients both in the rest condition (by spectral power) and during the tests performance (by both indices). This may point out stress as the "trigger" of depression.  相似文献

The use of noncontingent feedback controls in studies of the efficacy and process of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback may yield results confounded by differential expectancies for relaxation. Furthermore, the role of expectancies in producing psychological and physical relaxation as well as reducing muscle activity is unclear. This study investigated the effects of feedback delays and induced relaxation expectancies on EMG activity and experienced relaxation. One hundred four non-clinical subjects participated in one auditory frontal EMG biofeedback training session. Subjects were assigned to one of four computerized feedback delay conditions (0.0037, 0.7493, 2.2481, 6.7444 s) and to one of two relaxation expectancy conditions (positive or negative). During 20 minutes of biofeedback training, all groups decreased frontal activity. Feedback delays interacted with training epochs in affecting EMG; the longest delay group reduced frontal activity more slowly than the shortest delay group during training. Positive relaxation expectancies produced greater experienced relaxation than did negative relaxation expectancies. Instrumental and expectancy factors in EMG biofeedback appear to operate independently of each other by reducing physiological activity and producing psychological relaxation respectively.This study was completed by the first author under the direction of the second author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts degree. The effect of orally administrated gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on relaxation and immunity during stress has been investigated in humans. Two studies were conducted. The first evaluated the effect of GABA intake by 13 subjects on their brain waves. Electroencephalograms (EEG) were obtained after 3 tests on each volunteer as follows: intake only water, GABA, or L-theanine. After 60 minutes of administration, GABA significantly increases alpha waves and decreases beta waves compared to water or L-theanine. These findings denote that GABA not only induces relaxation but also reduces anxiety. The second study was conducted to see the role of relaxant and anxiolytic effects of GABA intake on immunity in stressed volunteers. Eight acrophobic subjects were divided into 2 groups (placebo and GABA). All subjects were crossing a suspended bridge as a stressful stimulus. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in their saliva were monitored during bridge crossing. Placebo group showed marked decrease of their IgA levels, while GABA group showed significantly higher levels. In conclusion, GABA could work effectively as a natural relaxant and its effects could be seen within 1 hour of its administration to induce relaxation and diminish anxiety. Moreover, GABA administration could enhance immunity under stress conditions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To establish whether stress management had a larger effect than a control treatment on resting blood pressure, ambulatory blood pressure, and left ventricular mass. DESIGN--A 12 week baseline period of habituation to measurement of blood pressure was followed by randomisation to either stress management or mild exercise for six months and follow up six months later. SETTING--General practice, district general hospital, and medical school. PATIENTS--Of the 184 patients aged under 60 with mild primary hypertension who entered the baseline habituation period, 88 were excluded because they failed to meet the entry criteria or they withdrew from the study. The remaining 46 men and 50 women underwent treatment. INTERVENTIONS--10 clinical sessions and daily practice at home of either stress management based on relaxation or non-aerobic stretching exercises. Mildly stressful 15 minute interviews before and after treatment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Diastolic and systolic blood pressure in the clinic and during 12 hours of ambulatory recording, and left ventricular mass measured by echocardiography. RESULTS--The patients'' blood pressure fell during habituation (systolic pressure from 152 mmHg to 140 mmHg, diastolic pressure from 98 to 93 mm Hg), but neither resting nor ambulatory blood pressure was changed by the treatments. Left ventricular mass was also unchanged. Blood pressure rose during the stressful interview, but this rise was reduced by stress management (systolic pressure rose by 7.4 mmHg before treatment and by 3.7 mmHg after treatment). CONCLUSION--Stress management of a type advocated for treating mild primary hypertension is ineffective in lowering blood pressure in patients who are well habituated to measuring blood pressure.  相似文献

Twenty males who scored relatively high on the rotor-pursuit motor skills task (High performance group) were given seven 2-minute trials to increase heart rate and seven 2-minute trials to decrease heart rate, as were 20 males who scored relatively low on the rotor-pursuit task (Low performance group). Visual analogue feedback was not provided during the first and last acceleration and deceleration trials but was presented during all other trials. Both groups of subjects were able to decrease heart rate significantly with and without feedback. Subjects in the High performance group were able to increase heart rate significantly with feedback and could generalize this increase to a no-feedback trial following feedback trials. Subjects in the Low performance group could not increase heart rate with or without feedback. Changes in respiration rate paralleled those noted for heart rate, but changes in chin electromyographic activity generally did not parallel the heart rate results. The heart rate data are discussed in terms of motor skills theories of self-regulation of heart rate.Some of the results reported in this article are based on a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of Northern Illinois University by the second author. Two experiments were designed to assess the effects of relaxation training, therapist presence or absence, live versus taped voice, and response-contingent versus noncontingent instructional progress on measures of subjective relaxation and frontal EMG. In the first experiment, it was found that subjects receiving taped instructions showed greater within-session subjective relaxation and lowering of within-session frontal EMG than subjects in a control condition. No differential training effects of therapist presence or absence was noted. In a second experiment, no significant differences in relaxation measures were found between subjects receiving live, response-contingent instructions and subjects receiving live, noncontingent instructions. Moreover, no meaningful differences in relaxation measures were found between subjects receiving live and taped instructions.This research is based on a dissertation by the first author, under the direction of the second author. At the time of school-age, the most frequent stress stimuli are related to school environment and educational process. Anxiety may play a big role in coping with stressful situations associated with school load. To approach this issue, we performed a real-life study at school during the classwork. The sample consisted of 36 healthy children aged 10 years, which were divided to low and high trait anxiety group based on the median value of the anxiety score. The investigations were carried out in the classroom during a stress condition (final exams) and non-stress condition (without any exam). In the whole sample, the condition with exam was associated with higher cortisol and lower testosterone concentrations in saliva compared to the condition without exam. The activity of salivary alpha-amylase increased at the end of the exam. Anxious children showed higher concentrations of aldosterone and lower activity of alpha-amylase compared to children with low trait anxiety. Cortisol levels were higher in anxious children in the first morning samples before starting the lessons. Children with high and low trait anxiety did not differ in extraversion, neuroticism, as well as non-verbal intelligence and school success. Thus, the anxious children at school showed a more rapid decrease of anticipatory stress-induced cortisol concentrations, higher aldosterone levels, and lower alpha-amylase activities compared to non-anxious children. These changes, particularly high concentrations of aldosterone in children with high trait anxiety, may have an impact on their psychophysiological development.  相似文献

This study compared the efficacy of five relaxation training procedures, four of which employed EMG auditory feedback: (1) biofeedback only (BF), (2) autogenic training phrases (ATP), (3) music (MU), (4) autogenic training phrases and music (ATP & MU), and (5) a control group, in developing self-regulation of a cultivated low arousal state as a countermeasure to tensed muscular reaction to stressful imagery. Twenty subjects established a pre- and posttraining frontalis region EMG biofeedback baseline measurement. Sixteen subjects were assigned at random to the 25-minute taped relaxation training procedure. After eight training sessions (4 weeks), MU and ATP & MU groups achieved highly significant differences when compared with the control group. The ATP & MU group attained the lowest postbaseline arousal level measured by the EMG. EMG as a physiological measure for transfer of training functioned well in detecting the psychophysiological affect of stressful imagery.This report is based on a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Psychology degree by the author. To detect any change in medical students'' attitudes toward medical ethics, students from the same class were given a questionnaire on their first day of medical school and again near the end of their fourth year of study. The results showed a strong shift away from the students'' initial expectations that they would rely on specialists or scholarly sources in the future; the need for a medical ethics course in the curriculum, while still felt, was less important to them by the fourth year. The reasons for these changes were not apparent, for the students'' levels of knowledge and perceptions of the role of ethics in medicine in the first and fourth years did not differ. It is recommended that medical school faculty actively reinforce the initially positive attitudes of students during clinical supervision.  相似文献

Two married males presented with psychogenic retarded ejaculation. Both reported the complete absence of ejaculation during sexual intercourse. Intervention consisted of meditative relaxation exercises together with supportive (brief) psychotherapy — for the husband and wife in both cases. Normal ejaculatory competence was reported by both subjects following 10–12 months of intervention. This was maintained at follow-up 14–16 months later.  相似文献

In a study of 170 junior house officers who were followed up from their fourth year in medical school mean levels of stress were higher than in other reported occupational groups, and the estimated prevalence of emotional disturbance was 50%, with 28% of the subjects showing evidence of depression. Nearly a fifth of the subjects reported occasional or frequent bouts of heavy drinking, a quarter took drugs for physical illness, and a few took drugs for recreation. Those who were emotionally distressed at the initial study and the follow up were more empathetic and more self critical than those who had low levels of stress on both occasions. Overwork was the most stressful aspect of their jobs, though the number of hours worked was not related to stress levels, unlike diet and sleep. The more stressed they were the more unfavourably they viewed aspects of their jobs. The incidence of distress is unacceptably high in junior house officers, and both they and the hospitals need to deal with the causes of the distress.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have deficits in proprioceptive awareness, 20 TMD patients were compared with 20 nonpain individuals matched to the TMD patients on age and gender. Left and right frontalis, masseter, and temporalis were monitored, as were forearm extensor, heart rate, and skin conductance while the participants viewed a nonstressful film segment. Following the film segment, participants provided self-reports of these physiological responses. This sequence was repeated for a second, stressful film segment and for a third, non-stressful film segment. Correlations between physiological activity and self-report were used as measures of proprioceptive awareness. The results indicated that TMD subjects were most accurate in their awareness of facial muscle activity during the stress condition and least accurate in the two nonstress periods. Control subjects increased their accuracy of awareness at each time period, showing significantly greater accuracy than the TMD group in the last, nonstress period. TMD subjects more accurately perceived activity of the nonfacial muscle variables in the two nonstress periods than during the stress period. These findings may provide a mechanism for understanding clinical observations showing that TMD patients with myofascial pain engage in high levels of parafunctional oral activity without awareness.Portions of this study were supported by the Weldon Spring Foundation and by a grant from the National Institute of Dental Research (DE 11017).
