Many desert playas are covered with water in the early spring. As theweather becomes warmer and drier, water evaporates, increasing saltcontent of the soil from 7,000 to almost 16,000 mmol NaCl Kg-1. Changes in respiratory metabolism during the growing season of fourhalophytes characteristic of cold desert playas was followed usingcalorimetry. In order of decreasing salt tolerance, the species examinedwere: the forbs Salicornia rubra, S. utahensis; the grass Distichlisspicata; and the shrub Allenrolfea occidentalis. Tissue collected in thefield from sites of low and high salinity in a single playa during May, June, and August of 1997 was put in isothermal calorimeters and the metabolicheat rate (q) and respiration rate (RCO2) measured. Efficiency ofsubstrate carbon conversion (q/RCO2) and predicted specific growthrate (HBRSG) were calculated. These species are allwell-adapted to the environment in which they are found. Highestmetabolism, respiration, efficiency and growth are found during May andJune and are lowest during the hot, dry month of August. Differencesbetween the species are also noted.  相似文献

Predictions of warming and drying in the Mediterranean and other regions require quantifying of such effects on ecosystem carbon dynamics and respiration. Long‐term effects can only be obtained from forests in which seasonal drought is a regular feature. We carried out measurements in a semiarid Pinus halepensis (Aleppo pine) forest of aboveground respiration rates of foliage, Rf, and stem, Rt over 3 years. Component respiration combined with ongoing biometric, net CO2 flux [net ecosystem productivity (NEP)] and soil respiration measurements were scaled to the ecosystem level to estimate gross and net primary productivity (GPP, NPP) and carbon‐use efficiency (CUE=NPP/GPP) using 6 years data. GPP, NPP and NEP were, on average, 880, 350 and 211 g C m?2 yr?1, respectively. The above ground respiration made up half of total ecosystem respiration but CUE remained high at 0.4. Large seasonal variations in both Rf and Rt were not consistently correlated with seasonal temperature trends. Seasonal adjustments of respiration were observed in both the normalized rate (R20) and short‐term temperature sensitivity (Q10), resulting in low respiration rates during the hot, dry period. Rf in fully developed needles was highest over winter–spring, and foliage R20 was correlated with photosynthesis over the year. Needle growth occurred over summer, with respiration rates in developing needles higher than the fully developed foliage at most times. Rt showed a distinct seasonal maximum in May irrespective of year, which was not correlated to the winter stem growth, but could be associated with phenological drivers such as carbohydrate re‐mobilization and cambial activity. We show that in a semiarid pine forest photosynthesis and stem growth peak in (wet) winter and leaf growth in (dry) summer, and associated adjustments of component respiration, dominated by those in R20, minimize annual respiratory losses. This is likely a key for maintaining high CUE and ecosystem productivity similar to much wetter sites, and could lead to different predictions of the effect of warming and drying climate on productivity of pine forests than based on short‐term droughts.  相似文献

Soil microbial respiration is a critical component of the global carbon cycle, but it is uncertain how properties of microbes affect this process. Previous studies have noted a thermodynamic trade-off between the rate and efficiency of growth in heterotrophic organisms. Growth rate and yield determine the biomass-specific respiration rate of growing microbial populations, but these traits have not previously been used to scale from microbial communities to ecosystems. Here we report seasonal variation in microbial growth kinetics and temperature responses (Q10) in a coniferous forest soil, relate these properties to cultured and uncultured soil microbes, and model the effects of shifting growth kinetics on soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh). Soil microbial communities from under-snow had higher growth rates and lower growth yields than the summer and fall communities from exposed soils, causing higher biomass-specific respiration rates. Growth rate and yield were strongly negatively correlated. Based on experiments using specific growth inhibitors, bacteria had higher growth rates and lower yields than fungi, overall, suggesting a more important role for bacteria in determining Rh. The dominant bacteria from laboratory-incubated soil differed seasonally: faster-growing, cold-adapted Janthinobacterium species dominated in winter and slower-growing, mesophilic Burkholderia and Variovorax species dominated in summer. Modeled Rh was sensitive to microbial kinetics and Q10: a sixfold lower annual Rh resulted from using kinetic parameters from summer versus winter communities. Under the most realistic scenario using seasonally changing communities, the model estimated Rh at 22.67 mol m−2 year−1, or 47.0% of annual total ecosystem respiration (Re) for this forest.  相似文献

Effects of daytime carbon dioxide concentration on dark respiration in rice   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) has generated considerable interest in the response of agricultural crops to [CO2]. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of a wide range of daytime [CO2] on dark respiration of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. IR-30). Rice plants were grown season-long in naturally sunlit plant growth chambers in subambient (160 and 250), ambient (330), or super-ambient (500, 660 and 900 μmol CO2 mol?1 air) [CO2] treatments. Canopy dark respiration, expressed on a ground area basis (Rd) increased with increasing [CO2] treatment from 160 to 500 μmol mol?1 treatments and was very similar among the superambient treatments. The trends in Rd over time and in response to increasing daytime [CO2] treatment were associated with and similar to trends previously described for photosynthesis. Specific respiration rate (Rdw) decreased with time during the growing season and was higher in the subambient than the ambient and superambient [CO2] treatments. This greater Rdw in the subambient [CO2] treatments was attributed to a higher specific maintenance respiration rate and was associated with higher plant tissue nitrogen concentration.  相似文献

The relationship between gross primary productivity (GPP) and net primary productivity (NPP) is not fully understood. One of the uncertainties relevant to this issue is the magnitude of woody tissue respiration. Although some data exist for temperate and boreal zones, measurements of woody tissue respiration in tropical forests are sparse. We made in situ chamber measurements of woody tissue respiration in two tropical rain forests, one in the Brazilian Amazon (Reserva Jarú) and one in Central Cameroon (Mbalmayo Reserve). We made measurements on a wide range of species at each site and over a range of stem diameters from 0·02 to 1·4 m. The rate of efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2) from bark at 25 °C, Rt, varied from 0·1 to 5·2 µmol m?2 s?1 across the two sites, and the efflux was related to both volume and surface area components of the measured stem sections. The temperature response in Rt was slightly higher at Jarú than at Mbalmayo, with Q10 values of 1·8 (± 0·1 SE) and 1·6 (± 0·1 SE), respectively. A log–log regression showed that Rt was significantly related to stem diameter, D (P < 0·001; r2 = 0·58–0·62) and was significantly higher at Mbalmayo than at Jarú (P < 0·001), but that the rate of increase in Rt with stem diameter, D, was similar between sites. At the Mbalmayo site, tree growth measurements made over a 4 month period were used to make two estimates of the maintenance (Rm) and construction (Rc) components of respiration embedded in Rt. The two methods agreed closely, suggesting that Rm was approximately 80% of Rc at this site. Rm could be strongly related to D using a sigmoidal relationship that described both surface area and volume components as sources of respiratory CO2 (r2 = 0·71). This functional model was combined with inventory, growth and climate data for the Mbalmayo site to make a first estimate of annual above‐ground woody tissue respiration, RA, which was 257 (± 18 SE) g C m?2 year?1. This value corresponds to approximately 10% of GPP, slightly lower than that found for another tropical rain forest, but higher than for temperate forests. When combined with data from six other sites in tropical, temperate and boreal settings, a very strong relationship was found between RA and leaf area index (LAI), and between RA/GPP and LAI (P < 0·001, r2 = 0·98). This indicates that RA exerts an appreciable constraint on NPP and that this constraint varies closely with LAI across widely differing types of woody vegetation.  相似文献

The regulation of the bioavailability of insulin‐like growth factors (IGFs) is critical for normal mammalian growth and development. The imprinted insulin‐like growth factor 2 receptor gene (IGF2R) encodes a transmembrane protein receptor that acts to sequester and degrade excess circulating insulin‐like growth factor 2 (IGF‐II) – a potent foetal mitogen – and is considered an important inhibitor of growth. Consequently, IGF2R may serve as a candidate gene underlying important growth‐ and body‐related quantitative traits in domestic mammalian livestock. In this study, we have quantified genotype–phenotype associations between three previously validated intronic bovine IGF2R single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (IGF2R:g.64614T>C, IGF2R:g.65037T>C and IGF2R:g.86262C>T) and a range of performance traits in 848 progeny‐tested Irish Holstein‐Friesian artificial insemination sires. Notably, all three polymorphisms analysed were associated (P ≤ 0.05) with at least one of a number of performance traits related to animal body size: angularity, body depth, chest width, rump width, and animal stature. In addition, the C‐to‐T transition at the IGF2R:g.65037T>C polymorphism was positively associated with cow carcass weight and angularity. Correction for multiple testing resulted in the retention of two genotype–phenotype associations (animal stature and rump width). None of the SNPs analysed were associated with any of the milk traits examined. Analysis of pairwise r2 measures of linkage disequilibrium between all three assayed SNPs ranged between 0.41 and 0.79, suggesting that some of the observed SNP associations with performance may be independent. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies demonstrating associations between IGF2R polymorphisms and growth‐ and body‐related traits in cattle. These results also support the increasing body of evidence that imprinted genes harbour polymorphisms that contribute to heritable variation in phenotypic traits in domestic livestock species.  相似文献

The carbon balance of Arctic ecosystems is particularly sensitive to global environmental change. Leaf respiration (R), a temperature‐dependent key process in determining the carbon balance, is not well‐understood in Arctic plants. The potential for plants to acclimate to warmer conditions could strongly impact future global carbon balance. Two key unanswered questions are (1) whether short‐term temperature responses can predict long‐term respiratory responses to growth in elevated temperatures and (2) to what extent the constant daylight conditions of the Arctic growing season inhibit leaf respiration. In two dominant Arctic species E riophorum vaginatum (tussock grass) and B etula nana (woody shrub), we assessed the extent of respiratory inhibition in the light (R L/R D), respiratory response to short‐term temperature change, and respiratory acclimation to long‐term warming treatments. We found that R of both species is strongly inhibited by light (averaging 35% across all measurement temperatures). In E . vaginatum both R L and R D acclimated to the long‐term warming treatment, reducing the magnitude of respiratory response relative to the short‐term response to temperature increase. In B . nana, both R L and R D responded to short‐term temperature increase but showed no acclimation to the long‐term warming. The ability to predict plant respiratory response to global warming with short‐term temperature responses will depend on species‐specific acclimation potential and the differential response of R L and R D to temperature. With projected woody shrub encroachment in Arctic tundra and continued warming, changing species dominance between these two functional groups, may impact ecosystem respiratory response and carbon balance.  相似文献

Acetylenic phenols and a chromene isolated from the grapevine fungal pathogen Eutypa lata were examined for mode of toxicity. The compounds included eutypine (4-hydroxy-3-[3-methyl-3-butene-1-ynyl] benzyl aldehyde), eutypinol (4-hydroxy-3-[3-methyl-3-butene-1-ynyl] benzyl alcohol), eulatachromene, 2-isoprenyl-5-formyl-benzofuran, siccayne, and eulatinol. A bioassay using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that all compounds were either lethal or inhibited growth. A respiratory assay using 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium (TTC) indicated that eutypinol and eulatachromene inhibited mitochondrial respiration in wild-type yeast. Bioassays also showed that 2-isoprenyl-5-formyl-benzofuran and siccayne inhibited mitochondrial respiration in the S. cerevisiae deletion mutant vph2, lacking a vacuolar type H (+) ATPase (V-ATPase) assembly protein. Cell growth of tsa1, a deletion mutant of S. cerevisiae lacking a thioredoxin peroxidase (cTPx I), was greatly reduced when grown on media containing eutypinol or eulatachromene and exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidative stress. This reduction in growth establishes the toxic mode of action of these compounds through inhibition of mitochondrial respiration.  相似文献

In previous studies, water stress has induced variable and sometimes contradictory changes in respiration. We used isothermal calorimetry to measure the response of foliar respiration to water deficit in nine eucalypt genotypes. Specific growth rates (R SG) of shoots and leaves of variable age were measured independently, and the data were applied to both the growth-maintenance and enthalpy balance models. We calculated the oxidation state of respiratory substrate and the enthalpy change for the conversion of substrate carbon to biomass (ΔH B). Moderate water stress reduced the R SG of shoots by 38% (P<0.01) and carbon conversion efficiency by 15% (P<0.05). The relationship between carbon conversion efficiency and R SG was not affected by water deficit for shoots, but was significantly altered for leaves. Water deficit increased maintenance respiration by about 23% (P<0.001). The growth coefficient of respiration was not significantly altered. However, changes in oxidation states of substrate and biomass suggest that the energy requirements of biosynthesis were increased under water stress. Our results confirm that carbohydrates are the major respiratory substrates in growing tissues, though mature leaves utilized a substantial component of more reduced substrate. Mature leaves had variable oxidation states for respiration substrate, which indicates a variable relationship between CO2 evolution and ATP production. Measured ΔH B in shoots and leaves were too small for reliable estimation of R SG by the enthalpy balance model. We also found significant effects of water stress on the oxidation state of substrate and ΔH B.

A trenching method was used to determine the contribution of root respiration to soil respiration. Soil respiration rates in a trenched plot (R trench) and in a control plot (R control) were measured from May 2000 to September 2001 by using an open-flow gas exchange system with an infrared gas analyser. The decomposition rate of dead roots (R D) was estimated by using a root-bag method to correct the soil respiration measured from the trenched plots for the additional decaying root biomass. The soil respiration rates in the control plot increased from May (240–320 mg CO2 m–2 h–1) to August (840–1150 mg CO2 m–2 h–1) and then decreased during autumn (200–650 mg CO2 m–2 h–1). The soil respiration rates in the trenched plot showed a similar pattern of seasonal change, but the rates were lower than in the control plot except during the 2 months following the trenching. Root respiration rate (R r) and heterotrophic respiration rate (R h) were estimated from R control, R trench, and R D. We estimated that the contribution of R r to total soil respiration in the growing season ranged from 27 to 71%. There was a significant relationship between R h and soil temperature, whereas R r had no significant correlation with soil temperature. The results suggest that the factors controlling the seasonal change of respiration differ between the two components of soil respiration, R r and R h.  相似文献

Saplings of four clones of Sitka spruce and cherry were grown for three and two growing seasons, respectively, in open top chambers at two CO2 concentrations (≈ 350 and ≈ 700 μmol mol–1) to determine whether the increase in total biomass brought about by enhanced [CO2] is a result of a transient or persistent effect in nonlimiting conditions. Classical growth analysis was applied to both species and mean current relative growth rate of total dry mass (RT) and leaf dry mass (RL), and period relative growth rate of total dry mass ( ) and leaf dry mass ( ) were calculated. Sitka spruce saplings and cherry seedlings showed a positive growth response to elevated [CO2], and at the end of the experiments both species were ≈ 40% larger in elevated [CO2] than in ambient [CO2]. As a result, the period mean and were significantly higher in elevated [CO2]. The differences in plant dry mass at the end of the experiments were a consequence of the more rapid growth in the early phase of exposure to elevated [CO2]. After this initial phase mean RT and RL were similar or even lower in elevated [CO2] than in ambient [CO2]. NAR of both species was much higher in elevated [CO2], whereas both LAR, SLA, and LMR showed the opposite trend. The higher LAR and SLA of plants in ambient [CO2] contributed to a compensation by which they maintained RT similar to that of elevated [CO2] saplings despite lower NAR and photosynthetic rate. However, when the same size the trees were similar amongst the [CO2] treatments, indicating that one of the main effect of elevated [CO2] on tree growth is to speed-up early development in all aspects.  相似文献

The possible interference when measuring gas exchange with respiratory CO2 produced under the gasket of commercially available clamp‐on leaf chambers was investigated. Two of these chambers were compared with a leaf chamber that accommodated an entire leaf without clamping it under a gasket. An overestimation of dark respiration rate (RD) by 55% was found with Plantago major leaves, a species with homobaric leaves that have high resistance for lateral gaseous transport. The percentage was similar in the heterobaric Ficus benjamina, but was 32% in the highly porous homobaric Nicotiana tabacum. Net photosynthetic rate at low photon flux density was underestimated by 35% in the clamp‐on chamber. However, the gasket effect was not detectable at light saturation because the error was small in comparison with the high photosynthetic rates. Estimation of respiration in the light (RL) in Nicotiana as derived from CO2 exchange at low CO2 concentrations was complicated by three factors. The inward diffusion of respiratory CO2 from under the gasket was added to a diffusion of CO2 from outside through the gasket material and through the leaf, which produced an even larger error in RL in comparison with RD at ambient CO2. These errors are significant for estimations of carbon gain at whole plant and canopy level and also at the leaf level when photosynthetic rates are low. Possible improvements in gasket design and corrections of CO2 exchange measurements for the gasket effect are discussed.  相似文献

Plant respiration is an important contributor to the proposed positive global carbon‐cycle feedback to climate change. However, as a major component, leaf mitochondrial (‘dark’) respiration (Rd) differs among species adapted to contrasting environments and is known to acclimate to sustained changes in temperature. No accepted theory explains these phenomena or predicts its magnitude. Here we propose that the acclimation of Rd follows an optimal behaviour related to the need to maintain long‐term average photosynthetic capacity (Vcmax) so that available environmental resources can be most efficiently used for photosynthesis. To test this hypothesis, we extend photosynthetic co‐ordination theory to predict the acclimation of Rd to growth temperature via a link to Vcmax, and compare predictions to a global set of measurements from 112 sites spanning all terrestrial biomes. This extended co‐ordination theory predicts that field‐measured Rd and Vcmax accessed at growth temperature (Rd,tg and Vcmax,tg) should increase by 3.7% and 5.5% per degree increase in growth temperature. These acclimated responses to growth temperature are less steep than the corresponding instantaneous responses, which increase 8.1% and 9.9% per degree of measurement temperature for Rd and Vcmax respectively. Data‐fitted responses proof indistinguishable from the values predicted by our theory, and smaller than the instantaneous responses. Theory and data are also shown to agree that the basal rates of both Rd and Vcmax assessed at 25°C (Rd,25 and Vcmax,25) decline by ~4.4% per degree increase in growth temperature. These results provide a parsimonious general theory for Rd acclimation to temperature that is simpler—and potentially more reliable—than the plant functional type‐based leaf respiration schemes currently employed in most ecosystem and land‐surface models.  相似文献

The effect of temperature regime on growth and other morphological characteristics of barley plants (Hordeum distichum L., cv. Andrei) as dependent on the level of mineral nutrition was investigated in a controlled experiment. Plants were raised hydroponically at a high (0.22 g/(g day)) and low (0.05 g/(g day)) relative rates of the addition of mineral nutrients (R A). Mineral nutrients were daily added to the nutrient solutions in exponentially increased amounts to provide steady-state plant growth. At the optimum temperature regime (21/17°C, day/night), the plant relative growth rate (RGR) was proportional to the preset R A during the entire exponential period. Low R A led to a decrease in the nitrogen content in plants, plant weight, and respiratory activity, as well as to the increase in the relative root weight. Biomass accumulation at lowered temperature regime (13/8°C) and a high R A was 1.8-fold lower than at optimum temperature regime. Although under these conditions, the ratio of respiration to gross photosynthesis reduced threefold due to the decrease in the respiration rate, RGR of plants was equal to 0.11 ± 0.02 g/(g day), which was twice lower than the preset R A. These pointed to the decrease in plant ability to maintain a certain ratio of photosynthesis to respiration within a day. At a deficiency of mineral nutrition and low temperature, RGR reached the preset R A. Plants adapted to lowered temperature by a shift of the temperature optimum of their metabolism (heat production) to lower values. As a whole, a low variability of such growth parameters as RGR, C/N, and root to shoot weight ratio at different R A and lowered temperatures testified to the lessening of growth limitation by the mineral nutrition.__________Translated from Fiziologiya Rastenii, Vol. 52, No. 3, 2005, pp. 384–391.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Garmash.  相似文献

In the understory of a closed forest, plant growth is limited by light availability, and early leafing is proposed to be an important mechanism of plant invasion by providing a spring C “subsidy” when high light is available. However, studies on respiration, another important process determining plant net C gain, are rare in understory invasive plants. In this study, leaf properties and the temperature response of leaf respiration were compared between invasive Berberis thunbergii, an early leafing understory shrub, and two native shrubs, Kalmia latifolia, a broadleaf evergreen and Vaccinium corymbosum, a late-leafing deciduous species, in an oak-dominated deciduous forest. The seasonal trend of the basal respiration rates (R 0) and the temperature response coefficient (E 0), were different among the three shrubs and species-specific negative correlations were observed between R 0 and E 0. All three shrubs showed significant correlation between respiration rate on an area basis (20°C) and leaf N on an area basis. The relationship was attributed to the variation of both leaf N on a mass basis and leaf mass per area (LMA) in B. thunbergii, but to LMA only in K. latifolia and V. corymbosum. After modeling leaf respiration throughout 2004, B. thunbergii displayed much higher annual leaf respiration (mass based) than the two native shrubs, indicating a higher cost per unit of biomass investment. Thus, respiratory properties alone were not likely to lead to C balance advantage of B. thunbergii. Future studies on whole plant C budgets and leaf construction cost are needed to address the C balance advantage in early leafing understory shrubs like B. thunbergii.  相似文献

In an open-top chamber experiment located in a mountain stand of 14-years-old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.), trees were continuously exposed to either ambient CO2 concentration (A), or ambient + 350 µmol mol–1 (E) over four growing seasons. Respiration rates of different woody parts (stem, branches, coarse roots) were measured during the last growing season. The calculated increase in the respiration rate related to a 10 °C temperature change (Q10) was different in stem compared to branches and roots. Differences between the E and A variants were statistically significant only for roots in the autumn. Stem maintenance respiration (RMs) measured in April and November (periods of no growth activity) were not different. The stem respiration values (Rs) were recalculated to a standard temperature of 15 °C to estimate the seasonal course. The obtained Rs differed significantly between used variants during July and August. At the end of the season, Rs in E decreased slower than in A, indicating some prolongation of the physiological activity under the elevated CO2 concentration. The total stem respiration carbon losses for the investigated growing season (May – September) were higher for A (2.32 kg(C) m–2 season–1) compared to E (2.12 kg(C) m–2 season–1). The respiration rates of the whorl branches (Rb) were lower compared with the stem respiration but not significantly different between the used variants. The root respiration rate was increased in E variant.  相似文献

Respiration processes are well recognized as fundamental for the plant carbon balance, but little attention has been paid to the relationships among respiration rates, environment and genetic variability. This can be of particular interest to understand the differences in net carbon balances in crops as grapevines. Night respiration (Rn) and its associated growth (Rg) and maintenance (Rm) components were evaluated during leaf expansion in two grapevine cultivars (Tempranillo cv. and Garnacha cv.) that differ in their plant growth pattern and carbon balance. Simultaneously, leaf traits as leaf mass area, nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) content were evaluated in order to relate to the respiratory processes and the leaf growth. The results showed the differences in respiration rates associated with the leaf expansion pattern. Tempranillo developed leaves with higher leaf area and lower dry weight per leaf unit than Garnacha. Although differences between cultivars were observed in terms of growth costs in expanding leaves, the maintenance costs were similar for both cultivars. Also, a significant linear regression was found between respiration rates and N content in expanding and mature leaves. The results indicate that differences in structure and nitrogen content of expanding leaves may lead to respiratory differences between cultivars. These results also demonstrate the importance of respiratory cost components in carbon balance calculations in grapevines.  相似文献
