Suppression by dominants of female subordinate reproduction has been found in many vertebrate social groups, but has rarely been shown experimentally. Here experimental evidence is provided for reproductive suppression in the group-living Lake Tanganyika cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher. Within groups of three unrelated females, suppression was due to medium- and small-sized females laying less frequently compared with large females, and compared with medium females in control pairs. Clutch size and average egg mass of all females depended on body size, but not on rank. In a second step, a large female was removed from the group and a very small female was added to keep the group size constant. The medium females immediately seized the dominant breeding position in the group and started to reproduce as frequently as control pairs, whereas clutch size and egg mass did not change. These results show that female subordinate cichlids are reproductively capable, but apparently suppressed with respect to egg laying. Nevertheless, some reproduction is tolerated, possibly to ensure continued alloparental care by subordinate females.  相似文献

As breeding between relatives often results in inbreeding depression, inbreeding avoidance is widespread in the animal kingdom. However, inbreeding avoidance may entail fitness costs. For example, dispersal away from relatives may reduce survival. How these conflicting selection pressures are resolved is challenging to investigate, but theoretical models predict that inbreeding should occur frequently in some systems. Despite this, few studies have found evidence of regular incest in mammals, even in social species where relatives are spatio-temporally clustered and opportunities for inbreeding frequently arise. We used genetic parentage assignments together with relatedness data to quantify inbreeding rates in a wild population of banded mongooses, a cooperatively breeding carnivore. We show that females regularly conceive to close relatives, including fathers and brothers. We suggest that the costs of inbreeding avoidance may sometimes outweigh the benefits, even in cooperatively breeding species where strong within-group incest avoidance is considered to be the norm.  相似文献

Neolamprologus pulcher is a cooperatively breeding cichlid fish,in which helpers stay in their natal territory and help withbrood care, territory defense, and maintenance. In this studywe investigated helper effects by an experimental group sizereduction in the field. After this manipulation, focal helpersin reduced groups tended to feed less, and small helpers visitedthe breeding shelter significantly more often than same-sizedhelpers in control groups. No evidence was found that remaininghelpers compensated for the removed helpers by increasing territorydefense and maintenance behavior. Breeders, however, did showa lower defense rate, possibly caused by an increase in broodcare effort. Survival of fry was significantly lower in removalthan control groups, which provides the first experimental proofin a natural population of fish that brood care helpers do effectivelyhelp. The data suggest that in small, generally younger, helpers,kin selection may be an important evolutionary cause of cooperation.Large helpers, however, who are generally older and less relatedto the breeders than small helpers are suggested to pay to beallowed to stay in the territory by helping. In many social vertebrates, variation in group persistence exerts an important effect on individual fitness and population demography. However, few studies have been able to investigate the failure of groups or the causes of the variation in their longevity. We use data from a long‐term study of cooperatively breeding meerkats, Suricata suricatta, to investigate the different causes of group failure and the factors that drive these processes. Many newly formed groups failed within a year of formation, and smaller groups were more likely to fail. Groups that bred successfully and increased their size could persist for several years, even decades. Long‐lived groups principally failed in association with the development of clinical tuberculosis, Mycobacterium suricattae, a disease that can spread throughout the group and be fatal for group members. Clinical tuberculosis was more likely to occur in groups that had smaller group sizes and that had experienced immigration.  相似文献

The molecular mechanisms underlying complex social behaviours such as dominance are largely unknown. Studying the cooperatively breeding African cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher, we show that dominant females were similar to dominant males in dominance behaviour, high testosterone levels and brain arginine vasotocin expression (a neuropeptide involved in vertebrate territorial, reproductive and social behaviours) compared to subordinate helpers, but had lower levels of 11-ketotestosterone than males. Furthermore, brain gene expression profiles of dominant females were most similar to those of the males (independent of social rank). Dominant breeder females are masculinized at the molecular and hormonal level while being at the same time reproductively competent, suggesting a modular organization of molecular and endocrine functions, allowing for sex-specific regulation.  相似文献

Large male helpers in the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulchergain reproductive success by parasitizing the reproductive effort ofmale territory owners. Under controlled, experimental conditionswe examined the genetic relatedness between the members of broodpairs (n = 14), their male helpers (n = 8), and offspring (n= 292) in seven families. We used multilocus DNA fingerprintingto check for potential reproductive parasitism by male helpersand to assess their fertilization success. Of offspring producedin these families, 10.3% were sired by helpers. In parasitizedbroods, helper fertilization success varied between 12.5% and35.8%. Male helpers parasitized parental reproduction when theirbody size exceeded 4.5 cm standard length (SL), even thoughsexual maturity may be reached much earlier (3.5 cm SL). Twoof three parasitic helpers were punished by severe aggressiveattacks when parasitizing the reproduction of breeders, whichled to their expulsion from the territory. This study demonstratesa potential fitness benefit to broodcare helpers that is oftenneglected. It also points to the delicate balance that may exist betweencooperative and competitive behavior in cooperatively breeding species.  相似文献

In many social birds there are sex differences in dispersal patterns, with males commonly remaining in their natal group whereas females typically disperse at adolescence. Group members may therefore increase their fitness by preferentially caring for offspring of a particular sex according to social circumstances. Although previous studies have focussed on intragroup social factors that may affect preferential care, we propose that the relative size of neighbouring groups is of primary importance. Here we show that in the cooperatively breeding Arabian babbler (Turdoides squamiceps), parents preferentially feed male offspring when relative group size is small, and female offspring when group size is large. Unlike parents, helpers consistently favour young of the opposite sex to themselves, suggesting the risk of competition with members of the same sex for future breeding opportunities may override other considerations. These results emphasize the complexity of investment strategies in relation to social circumstances and the variable benefits of raising males vs. females in a species with sex-biased philopatry.  相似文献

1. Subordinate helpers in cooperative societies may gain both immediate and future benefits, including paternity and territorial inheritance. However, if such opportunities correlate with rank in the queue, it is unclear why such queues should be stable. 2. In cooperatively breeding superb fairy-wrens Malurus cyaneus, only males are generally philopatric, and form stable hierarchical queues for the dominant position. 3. Male opportunities for reproduction are influenced both by their dominance status within the group, and their relatedness to the breeding female. For young queuing subordinates, the breeding female is typically their mother. Because of incest avoidance, reproduction is possible only through extra-group mating, even if the dominant position is achieved while the mother is still on the territory. If the mother dies while the helper is still a subordinate, he can seek matings both outside the group, and with the unrelated replacement female within the group. Finally, males can achieve the dominant position and pair with an unrelated female by inheritance, dispersal to a neighbouring vacancy, or by forming a liaison with an immigrant subordinate female that causes fission of the natal territory. 4. On average males spent more time living with unrelated females than with their mother. Subordinate males gained no survival advantages when living with their mother rather than an unrelated female, contrary to the prediction that parents facilitate the survival of their offspring. 5. Dominants and subordinates also had similar survival. Mortality accelerated over time, probably because older males invest more in extra-group courtship display. 6. Fairy-wren queues are likely to be stable because older birds are superior, and because extra-pair mating provides direct benefits to subordinates.  相似文献

Cooperative breeding, where some individuals help to raise offspring that are not their own, is a relatively rare social system in birds. We studied the breeding biology of a declining cooperative breeder, the grey-crowned babbler Pomatostomus temporalis , with the aim of isolating the social factors that affect its reproductive success. Most breeding pairs were assisted by philopatric offspring, although pairs could breed successfully without helpers. Females laid up to four clutches (usually three eggs per clutch) per season. Male (but not female) helpers increased the number of young fledged from individual nests and the likelihood of re-nesting, resulting in higher seasonal fledgling production. Helper effects on brood size and fledgling production were greater in the second year of the study, which was also characterized by higher nest failure. This suggests that helpers enhance reproduction more in poor conditions. Our study demonstrates the interacting effects of social and ecological factors on reproductive success, and that retention of offspring is not always beneficial for the breeders in cooperative species.  相似文献

While competition for limited breeding positions is a common feature of group life, species vary widely in the extent to which reproduction is shared among females (‘reproductive skew’). In recent years, there has been considerable debate over the mechanisms that generate variation in reproductive skew, with most evidence suggesting that subordinates breed when dominants are unable to prevent them from doing so. Here, we suggest that viviparity reduces the ability of dominant females to control subordinate reproduction and that, as a result, dominant female birds are more able than their mammal counterparts to prevent subordinates from breeding. Empirical data support this assertion. This perspective may increase our understanding of how cooperative groups form and are stabilized in nature.  相似文献

Because of the necessity of lactation, mammalian mothers must perform at least a minimum amount of infant care. In cooperatively breeding species, other group members aid in all other aspects of infant care. However, some mothers continue to carry and nurse their infants more than others. The golden lion tamarin, Leontopithecus rosalia, is a small, communally breeding primate in the family Callitrichidae. We studied hormonal, individual, historical and social factors hypothesized to contribute to variation in levels of maternal care. We used neonatal weight as a measure of prenatal care, and carrying and nursing as measures of postnatal care. Greater neonatal weight was associated with smaller litter size, lower prepartum levels of oestrogen conjugates, and higher prepartum cortisol levels. Higher rates of carrying during weeks 2 and 3 were associated with higher maternal weight, larger litter size and smaller numbers of helpers per infant. Higher rates of nursing in weeks 2 and 3 were predicted by smaller group size and provisioning of the mother. The most important factors affecting postnatal maternal care were maternal weight, group size, litter size and provisioning status of the mother. Thus, females that display higher levels of maternal care do so either because they have to (they have fewer helpers) or because they can (they are in better condition).  相似文献

In many species, territory ownership is a prerequisite for reproduction;consequently, factors that affect success in territory acquisitioncan have a large impact on fitness. When competing for territories,some individuals may have an advantage if, for example, theyare phenotypically superior or more familiar with the site thanothers. The relative importance of the many factors involvedin territory acquisition is, at present, unclear. We studiedpatterns of natural territory acquisition in a closed and saturatedpopulation of Seychelles warblers. Furthermore, by removingbreeders, we experimentally investigated the relative importance,to territory acquisition, of a range of factors and assessedwhether this differed between the sexes. In both sexes, themain route to natural territory acquisition was to dispersefrom the natal territory to immediately claim a vacant dominantposition. Males were older than females when acquiring a territoryfor the first time. In the removal experiment, for both sexes,the proximity of an individual's natal territory to a vacantdominant position was positively related to the individual'schance of claiming the vacancy. Older males were more likelyto gain an experimental vacant dominant position than were youngmales, whereas age did not affect territory acquisition in females.In the Seychelles warbler, the degree of intrasexual competitionfor territory ownership may be stronger for males than for femalesbecause territory ownership is a prerequisite for male reproduction,whereas females can reproduce on their natal territory. Mothers should adjust the size of propagules to the selectiveforces to which these offspring will be exposed. Usually, alarger propagule size is favored when young are exposed to highmortality risk or conspecific competition. Here we test 2 predictionson how egg size should vary with these selective agents. Whenoffspring are cared for by parents and/or alloparents, protectionmay reduce the predation risk to young, which may allow mothersto invest less per single offspring. In the cooperatively breedingcichlid Neolamprologus pulcher, brood care helpers protect groupoffspring and reduce the latters' mortality rate. Therefore,females are expected to reduce their investment per egg whenmore helpers are present. In a first experiment, we tested thisprediction by manipulating the helper number. In N. pulcher,helpers compete for dispersal opportunities with similar-sizedindividuals of neighboring groups. If the expected future competitionpressure on young is high, females should increase their investmentper offspring to give them a head start. In a second experiment,we tested whether females produce larger eggs when perceivedneighbor density is high. Females indeed reduced egg size withincreasing helper number. However, we did not detect an effectof local density on egg size, although females took longer toproduce the next clutch when local density was high. We arguethat females can use the energy saved by adjusting egg sizeto reduced predation risk to enhance future reproductive output.Adaptive adjustment of offspring size to helper number may bean important, as yet unrecognized, strategy of cooperative breeders.  相似文献

Life‐history theory predicts a trade‐off between current and future reproduction to maximize lifetime fitness. In cooperatively breeding species, where offspring care is shared between breeders and helpers, helper presence may influence the female breeders’ egg investment, and consequently, survival and future reproductive success. For example, female breeders may reduce egg investment in response to helper presence if this reduction is compensated by helpers during provisioning. Alternatively, female breeders may increase egg investment in response to helper presence if helpers allow the breeders to raise more or higher quality offspring successfully. In the facultatively cooperative‐breeding Tibetan ground tit Pseudopodoces humilis, previous studies found that helpers improve total nestling provisioning rates and fledgling recruitment, but have no apparent effects on the number and body mass of fledglings produced, while breeders with helpers show reduced provisioning rates and higher survival. Here, we investigated whether some of these effects may be explained by female breeders reducing their investment in eggs in response to helper presence. In addition, we investigated whether egg investment is associated with the female breeder's future fitness. Our results showed that helper presence had no effect on the female breeders’ egg investment, and that egg investment was not associated with breeder survival and reproductive success. Our findings suggest that the responses of breeders to helping should be investigated throughout the breeding cycle, because the conclusions regarding the breeders’ adjustment of reproductive investment in response to being helped may depend on which stage of the breeding cycle is considered.  相似文献

Social influences on the growth of the co-operatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher were studied by examining the size structure of existing laboratory groups and the responses of males and females to removals of higher-ranked fish, which created larger size differences with more dominant fish. The size differences between adjacently ranked group members were predicted to differ from expected based on random size distributions of group members. Both males and females were predicted to respond to removals by increasing growth rate. In previously established groups, the size difference between dominant and highest-ranked subordinate males was greater than expected based on random group-assembly rules. The size difference between dominant and subordinate females did not differ from the null expectation. Third-ranked subordinate males increased their growth rate upon moving up one place in the dominance hierarchy (after the removal of higher-ranking fish) relative to fish that did not change rank. Contrary to predictions, however, females did not increase growth upon increasing rank.  相似文献

Transactional models of social evolution emphasize that dominantbreeders may donate parcels of reproduction to subordinatesin return for peaceful cooperation. We develop a general transactionalmodel of reproductive partitioning and group size for N-persongroups when (1) expected group output is a concave (decelerating)functiong[N] of the number N of group members, and (2) thesubordinates may receive fractions of total group reproduction("staying incentives") just sufficient to induce them to stayand help the dominant instead of breeding solitarily. We focusespecially on "saturated" groups, that is, groups that havegrown in size just up to the point where subsequent joining by subordinates is no longer beneficial either to them (in parent-offspring groups) or to the dominant (in symmetric-relatedness groups).Decreased expected output for solitary breeding increases thesaturated group size and decreases the staying incentives.Increased relatedness decreases both the saturated group sizeand the staying incentives. However, in saturated groups withsymmetric relatedness, an individual subordinate's staying incentive converges to 1 — g[N* — 1]/g[N*]) regardless ofrelatedness, where N* is the size of a saturated group, providedthat the g[N] function near the saturated group size N* isapproximately linear. Thus, staying incentives can be insensitiveto relatedness in saturated groups, although the dominant's total fraction of reproduction (total skew) will be more sensitive.The predicted ordering for saturated group size is: Parent-fullsibling offspring = non-relatives > symmetrically relatedrelatives. Strikingly, stable groups of non-relatives can formfor concaveg[N] functions in our model but not in previousmodels of group size lacking skew manipulation by the dominant.Finally, symmetrical relatedness groups should tend to breakup by threatened ejections of subordinates by dominants, whereas parent-offspring groups should tend to breakup via unforceddepartures by subordinates.  相似文献
