In behavioral experiments, toad tadpoles-recipients chose between two parts of test aquarium with chemical signals of donor tadpoles of the same or different (Rana esculenta) species. The youngest studied tadpoles (43-45 stages) preferred the part of the aquarium with chemical cues from sibs as compared to non-sibs. No reliable difference in "non-sibs: water" system was observed. In "tadpoles of the same species: tadpoles of the other species" system, recipient tadpoles chose "their" part of the aquarium. Hence, toad tadpoles revealed a trend to aggregate with their sibs and avoid R. esculenta toads in the presence of certain chemical cues and in the absence of visual signals.  相似文献

In experiments with specially designed choice tanks, tadpoles of Bufo melanostictus spend significantly greater amounts of time near kin than near non-kin. However, in the absence of kin members, they prefer to spend more time near non-kin rather than stay away in isolation in the opposite blank zone with no company. This implies that association of toad tadpoles with their kin is due to attraction rather than repulsion from non-kin. Experiments designed to elucidate the sensory basis of kin recognition showed that toad tadpoles recognize their kin based on chemical cues rather than visual cues. They can also discriminate between homospecific non-kin and heterospecific (Sphaerotheca breviceps) tadpoles since the tadpoles spent significantly greater amounts of time near the former than near the latter. These findings suggest that where kin members are unavailable, selection may have favoured living with non-kin so as to derive benefits from group living and that a phenotype-matching mechanism may operate for both kin and species discrimination in B. melanostictus.  相似文献

Family-based tests of association are now often used when trying to fine-map a disease susceptibility locus. Recently, several tests of linkage and association have been proposed that use nuclear families with multiple affected and unaffected sibs rather than just case-parent triads. In this paper we propose a test that generalizes these previous tests. Formulae are derived to calculate the power of the test for a randomly mating population. These power calculations are used to determine conditions under which it is advantageous to include unaffected sibs in the analysis.  相似文献

To elucidate reproductive isolating mechanisms in the Bangladesh coastal bullfrog Hoplobatrachus litoralis and its congeneric species,we performed crossing experiments using three species: H.litoralis,H.tigerinus and H.rugulosus.In addition,we conducted histological observations on spermatogenesis of the hybrids. The reciprocal hybrids between H.litoralis and H.tigerinus developed normally with somewhat lower viability at the metamorphosis stage compared with the controls. Most of the metamorphosed frogs became mature. On the other hand, almost all hybrids between female H.rugulosus and male H.litoralis or H.tigerinus died of underdevelopment at the tadpole stage, and only a few hybrids metamorphosed normally and survived to maturity. The inner structures of the testes of the control H.litoralis and H.tigerinus were completely normal, with seminiferous tubules filled with compact bundles of normal spermatozoa. Those of the reciprocal hybrids between H.litoralis and H.tigerinus were almost normal or slightly abnormal, with seminiferous tubules that contained pycnotic nuclei in addition to normal bundles of normal spermatozoa, which demonstrates slight abnormalities in spermatogenesis. In contrast, the hybrids between female H.rugulosus and male H.litoralis or H.tigerinus had no bundles of spermatozoa nor spermatids in the seminiferous tubules, which indicates entirely abnormal spermatogenesis.Meiotic chromosome figures in the reciprocal hybrids between H.litoralis and H.tigerinus showed slight abnormalities, with the occurrence of univalents and increase of rod-shaped bivalents. These results indicate that H.litoralis and H.tigerinus are not isolated from each other by hybrid inviability nor by hybrid sterility, although the hybrids showed somewhat abnormal spermatogenesis in hybrids and that H.rugulosus is isolated from both H.litoralis and H.tigerinus by incomplete hybrid inviability and complete hybrid sterility.  相似文献

Mechanism of food detection in Rana temporalis tadpoles was studied using a rectangular choice tank with end compartments (stimulus zones) providing exclusively visual and/or chemical food cues. Boiled spinach served as the food. The test tadpoles were starved for 24 h before use. They were released from the center of the choice tank (n=24) after 5 min of acclimation to test for end bias and food-detecting mechanism. The number of tadpoles in the two stimulus zones was recorded at 5-min intervals from 10 to 30 min. In the end-bias tests (without food cues) tadpole distribution was comparable at all times in the two compartments of the choice tank, exhibiting no end bias. In tests with the visual food cues provided in one of the stimulus zones, the tadpole distribution was also random. On the other hand, in experiments involving chemical cues emanating from food the tadpoles preferentially associated with the food source in significantly greater numbers compared to the zone lacking food or providing only a visual cue. The experiments with individual test tadpoles also revealed that they detect food based on chemical cues and ruled out copycat behavior. These findings on R. temporalis tadpoles reveal that chemical senses predominate over the visual senses in detection of food and foraging.  相似文献

The ontogeny of kin recognition and influence of social environment on the development of kin recognition behaviour was experimentally investigated in tadpoles of Bufo melanostictus that lived in aggregations and showed low larval dispersion. Embryos and tadpoles of the toad were reared as (i) kin only, (ii) with kin and non-kin (separated by a mesh screen), and (iii) in isolation. They were tested for the ability to discriminate between (i) familiar siblings and unfamiliar non-siblings, (ii) familiar siblings and familiar non-siblings and, (iii) unfamiliar siblings and unfamiliar non-siblings. All tadpoles were fed on boiled spinach before conducting trials. Preference of test tadpoles to associate near the end compartments whether empty or containing members of specific stimulus groups was assessed using a rectangular choice tank. When tested in tanks with empty end compartments, the test tadpoles showed random distribution and thus no bias for the apparatus or the procedure. In the presence of kin/non-kin in the end compartments a significantly greater number of test tadpoles spent the majority of the time near familiar or unfamiliar kin rather than near familiar or unfamiliar non-kin. Kin discrimination ability persisted throughout larval development. Familiarity with siblings is not required for discriminating kin from non-kin, and kin discrimination ability is not modified following exposure to non-kin. Also, involvement of dietary cues is unlikely to be the prime mechanism of kin recognition inB. melanostictus unlike in some other anurans.  相似文献

Poison frogs in the genus Dendrobates have very small clutch sizes (2–6 eggs among species for which there are data) and typically transport their tadpoles singly to small phytotelmata, such as bromeliad tanks, leaf axils, fallen fruit capsules, and treeholes. Tadpoles of many species are predaceous, consuming larvae of insects that use the same microhabitat for breeding, such as giant damselflies and mosquitoes. Previous studies and observations on the behavior of poison frog tadpoles led us to question whether tadpoles might be cannibalistic. We studied a population of Dendrobates castaneoticus in lowland rainforest in Pará, Brazil; additional data were collected on Dendrobates auratus in Nicaragua. At the study site in Brazil, we established a grid of 40 Brazil nut capsules, the microhabitat used by D. castaneoticus for tadpole deposition. Of 42 tadpoles deposited during the 55 days of the study, 20 were killed or died; 16 of these were presumably killed by conspecific tadpoles. Growth rate and time to metamorphosis was higher among tadpoles that consumed three or more tadpoles or relatively large larvae of the mosquito Trichoprosopon digitatum, a colonist of newly opened Brazil nut capsules. We propose that selection has favored the development of predatory behavior in poison frog tadpoles primarily as a mechanism to eliminate predators from the small phytotelmata in which they develop and that cannibalism is a secondary outcome of this behavior. Predatory behavior also provides tadpoles with a source of food, which is frequently limited in these microhabitats. Additional studies of the biology of tadpoles of other species of Dendrobates are needed to determine the evolution of predatory and cannibalistic behavior in the clade.  相似文献

The quality of breeding sites is of great importance for the reproductive success and accordingly the fitness of many animal species. Hence, individuals should decide carefully where to rear their offspring. Often parents have to account for multiple characteristics of habitat quality at once, which in turn might change over time. Specimens confronted with such variability may evolve the ability to display context-dependant decision plasticity. Anuran amphibians breeding in ephemeral pools largely face two risks for their offspring: desiccation and predation. The Neotropical poison frog Ranitomeya variabilis deposits both eggs and tadpoles in phytotelmata. These small tadpole nurseries lower the risk of offspring predation. However, because most poison frog tadpoles are cannibalistic, even these pools need to be surveyed for predators, and parents tend to avoid deposition with conspecifics. We tested if this avoidance behaviour does change in parental R. variabilis depending on seasonal circumstances. Over several months we provided the frogs the option to deposit their eggs or tadpoles in pools that did and did not contain chemical cues of cannibalistic conspecifics, respectively. During the rainy season, frogs strongly avoided conspecific cues for both eggs and tadpoles. Anyway, with the change to the dry season, parental preferences changed such that parent frogs were more likely to deposit tadpoles (but not eggs) in pools containing cues of conspecific tadpoles. We suggest that R. variabilis, a species that typically isolates its cannibalistic offspring, has evolved a plastic feeding behaviour with regard to the risk of phytotelmata desiccation. We interpret that parents provide older tadpoles with younger ‘trophic’ tadpoles in order to accelerate their development and save them from impending desiccation.  相似文献

Parents defend their young in many ways, including provisioning chemical defences. Recent work in a poison frog system offers the first example of an animal that provisions its young with alkaloids after hatching or birth rather than before. But it is not yet known whether maternally derived alkaloids are an effective defence against offspring predators. We identified the predators of Oophaga pumilio tadpoles and conducted laboratory and field choice tests to determine whether predators are deterred by alkaloids in tadpoles. We found that snakes, spiders and beetle larvae are common predators of O. pumilio tadpoles. Snakes were not deterred by alkaloids in tadpoles. However, spiders were less likely to consume mother-fed O. pumilio tadpoles than either alkaloid-free tadpoles of the red-eyed treefrog, Agalychnis callidryas, or alkaloid-free O. pumilio tadpoles that had been hand-fed with A. callidryas eggs. Thus, maternally derived alkaloids reduce the risk of predation for tadpoles, but only against some predators.  相似文献

Parents have evolved a variety of strategies to minimize risks to their offspring, including complex choices regarding suitable rearing sites, based on abiotic and biotic factors, which differentially affect offspring survival. Because availability and quality of these sites are variable, parents may have to choose between immediately available lower‐quality rearing sites or extended search time. In some frog species with larval transport, parents are known to select bodies of water that are free of predators, cannibalistic tadpoles, or intraspecific competitors for larval deposition and rearing sites. We tested whether abiotic factors and the presence of predators and conspecific tadpoles affect tadpole deposition behavior in a population of smooth guardian frog, Limnonectes palavanensis, on the island of Borneo. Females lay eggs on land and males guard them until they hatch; after hatching, tadpoles climb onto the male's back and are subsequently transported to small pools of water on the forest floor, which are scarce and patchily distributed. We estimated the abundance of natural tadpole rearing sites in our study area and conducted experiments using artificial pools to test whether abiotic characteristics of these pools affect the probability of larval deposition. We also performed choice experiments to test whether males of L. palavanensis avoid pools with conspecific tadpoles or predators. Lastly, we tested whether the tadpoles of this species exhibit cannibalism. The abundance of natural deposition sites was low, and males readily used artificial pools for tadpole deposition. Males were less likely to deposit tadpoles in artificial pools located in steep areas, and males did not avoid depositing tadpoles in pools with conspecifics or with experimentally introduced predators. Males exhibited clutch‐partitioning behavior, dividing tadpoles between adjacent artificial pools. Pool availability, rather than the presence of potential competitors or predators in a pool, affects tadpole deposition decisions in this species.  相似文献

Kin recognition in Bufo scaber tadpoles: ontogenetic changes and mechanism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ontogenetic changes in kin-recognition behavior, effect of social environment on kin-recognition ability, and use of visual and chemical cues in kin recognition have been studied in tadpoles of Bufo scaber after rearing them with kin, in mixed groups, or in isolation from Gosner stage 12 (gastrula). By use of a rectangular choice tank the tadpoles were tested for their ability to choose between (a) familiar siblings and unfamiliar non-siblings, (b) unfamiliar siblings and familiar non-siblings, and (c) unfamiliar siblings and unfamiliar non-siblings. When tested without any stimulus groups in the end compartments of the tank, random distribution was observed for the tadpoles and no bias for the apparatus or the procedure. In the presence of kin and non-kin in the end compartments, significantly more tadpoles spent most of their time near kin (familiar or unfamiliar) rather than near non-kin during early larval stages, up to stage 37. After stage 37 (characterized by the differentiation of toes), test tadpoles showed no preference to associate with kin, suggesting an ontogenetic shift in the kin-recognition ability in B. scaber. In experiments involving selective blockade of visual or chemical cues the test tadpoles preferentially associated near their kin on the basis of chemical rather than visual cues. These findings suggest that familiarity with siblings is not necessary for kin recognition and that kin-recognition ability is not modified after exposure to non-kin by mixed rearing. The findings for B. scaber indicate a self referent phenotype matching mechanism of kin recognition which is predominantly aided by chemical rather than visual cues.  相似文献

Tadpoles in small, ephemeral pools whose duration and food content are unpredictable can potentially encounter substantial variation in diet composition and availability. We compared the effects of 10 days of food deprivation occurring early, midway and late in ontogeny on the metamorphic size and bioenergetic properties of Hyla chrysoscelis tadpoles. Tadpoles fed throughout ontogeny were controls. Metamorphs from tadpoles starved early and midway in ontogeny had the same snout-vent length and dry mass as controls, but the time to metamorphosis was extended by 8 and 19% respectively. Metamorphs of tadpoles starved late in development attained 85% of the length and 55% of the mass of controls, metamorphosed at the same time as controls, and suffered mortality 15 times greater than other treatments, perhaps because they were near the absolute minimum necessary level of energy reserves. There were no significant differences in percent organic matter, percent tissue water, condition index, and protein or glycogen concentrations between any experimental and control treatments. If food deprivation occurred early in development, the tadpoles caught up to the size of controls, but an extended developmental time would increase the risk of predation or habitat loss. If food reductions occur late in development, perhaps magnified by pond desiccation, tadpoles are stimulated to metamorphose at the same time as controls but at a smaller size. The bioenergetic composition of tadpoles at metamorphosis is unaffected by time of food deprivation.  相似文献

Previous laboratory studies have shown that Rana cascadae larvae preferentially associated with siblings over non-siblings in choice tests. This study, conducted during three consecutive summers, tests the hypothesis that R. cascadae larvae aggregate nonrandomly with respect to sibship in natural ponds. Pairs of sibships were reared in separate tanks or together in the same tank in the laboratory. Each sibship within a pair was then stained with neutral red or methylene blue dye and released together in a natural pond. Over a period of several days, aggregations of tadpoles within test ponds were repeatedly captured, censused for sibship composition, and released. In control tests, two groups of tadpoles from the same sibship were dyed different colors and released together. In total, 25 different tests were conducted using tadpoles from 31 sibships and 456 aggregations were sampled. The distribution of color compositions of aggregations in control tests did not differ from an expected random distribution. Color compositions of aggregations in experimental tests differed from controls and from an expected random distribution. Aggregations in these tests tended to be dominated by one of the two colors (sibships). We conclude that R. cascadae tadpoles recognize and prefer to aggregate with siblings in natural field conditions. Circumstances of early rearing (i.e., whether tadpoles were reared with siblings or in mixed sibling/non-sibling groups) had no influence on preferences to associate with siblings, but there was an inverse correlation between group size and sibling association.  相似文献

Inclusive fitness theory predicts that altruism should often be directed towards reproductive relatives, but it is unclear whether individuals that are most likely to help or harm relatives are also most likely to identify kin in the first place. Here I show that species and sibships of spadefoot toad tadpoles (Spea bombifrons and S. multiplicata) that were most likely to produce an environmentally induced cannibalistic morph were also most likely to avoid eating kin. Moreover, tadpoles avoided eating kin when they expressed the cannibal phenotype, but not when these same individuals reverted to the non-cannibalistic morph. Thus, individual tadpoles facultatively adjust their level of discrimination according to how likely they are to harm kin. In general, sensory systems and/or decision rules enabling recognition may be especially likely to evolve among those individuals that are most often faced with the problem of discrimination.  相似文献

Direct evidence of prey choice in carnivorous dinosaurs is rare in the fossil record. The most celebrated example pertains to purported stomach contents in the carnivorous dinosaur Coelophysis bauri, which besides revealing prey choice, also points to cannibalistic behaviour as being commonplace (Colbert 1989, 1995). Here, we test this hypothesis by conducting the first comprehensive anatomical and histological examination of the famed Coelophysis 'cannibals'. The results unequivocally show that the gut contents derive from early crocodylomorphs rather than juveniles of Coelophysis. These findings suggest that this taxon is not cannibalistic and bring into question the commonality of this behaviour among non-avian dinosaurs.  相似文献

We determined the complete nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial (mt) genomes from two dicroglossid frogs, Hoplobatrachus tigerinus (Indian Bullfrog) and Euphlyctis hexadactylus (Indian Green frog). The genome sizes are 20462 bp in H. tigerinus and 20280 bp in E. hexadactylus. Although both genomes encode the typical 37 mt genes, the following unique features are observed: 1) the ND5 genes are duplicated in H. tigerinus that have completely identical sequences, whereas duplicated ND5 genes in E. hexadactylus possessed dissimilar substitutions; 2) duplicated control region (CR) in H. tigerinus has almost identical sequences whereas single control region (CR) was found in E. hexadactylus; 3) the tRNA-Leu (CUN) gene is translocated from the LTPF tRNA cluster to downstream of ND5-1 in H. tigerinus, and the tRNA-Pro gene is translocated from the LTPF tRNA cluster to downstream of CR in E. hexadactylus; 4) pseudo tRNA-Leu (CUN) and tRNA-Pro genes are observed in E. hexadactylus; and 5) two tRNA-Met genes are encoded in both species, as observed in the previously reported dicroglossid mt genomes. Almost all observed gene rearrangements in H. tigerinus and E. hexadactylus can be explained by the tandem duplication and random loss model, except translocation of tRNA-Pro in E. hexadactylus. The novel mt genomic features found in this study may be useful for future phylogenetic studies in the dicroglossid taxa. However, the mt genome with interesting features found in the present study reveal a high level of variation of gene order and gene content, inspiring more research to understand the mechanisms behind gene and genome evolution in the dicroglossid and as well as in the amphibian taxa in future studies.  相似文献

We describe the larval stages of three species of the Asian-African tiger frogs Hoplobatrachus chinensis, H. occipitalis and H. tigerinus . The tadpoles of all three species are very similar, with peculiar oral features: (1) double rows of needle-like labial teeth, (2) strong emarginations on the large jaw sheaths and (3) keratinized spurs on the buccal floor. Characters 1 and 2 (and perhaps 3) are probably related to the carnivorous habits of these tadpoles. A molecular phylogeny based on 2430 base pairs of two nuclear and four mitochondrial genes corroborated monophyly of Asian and African Hoplobatrachus, and identified Euphlyctis as their sister group. Tadpoles of the latter genus lack buccal spurs and double labial tooth rows but share large jaw sheaths, the upper with a medial projection. Therefore, the common ancestor of Euphlyctis and Hoplobatrachus probably was also characterized by this state, and may have been facultatively carnivorous. Further carnivorous specializations in Hoplobatrachus could explain why tiger frogs have been so successful in populating arid environments where ponds are at high risk of desiccation. Larval morphology may prove to be the key innovation which enabled them to disperse, in the Late Cenozoic, into their current very wide distribution area in Asia and Africa.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 171–181.  相似文献

Previous work on the Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia) shows substantial inbreeding depression in both of our two study regions, Finland and southern France. The influence of inbreeding depression on population dynamics should depend on the strength of inbreeding avoidance. We conducted mate choice experiments to ascertain whether and to what extent butterflies avoid mating with their sibs. Experiments with similar design were done in the laboratory with Finnish butterflies and in the field with French butterflies. Each female was given a choice of mates with equal opportunity to mate with a sib or with a non-sib. In neither experiment was there a trend towards avoidance of sib mating. 95% confidence intervals for the proportion of non-sib matings were 12–62% in the laboratory experiment and 28–69% in the field experiment. Any preference for non-sibs must be slight, and can provisionally be ignored in modelling the dynamics of M. cinxia populations. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Inclusive fitness theory predicts that organisms can increase their fitness by helping or not harming relatives, and many animals modify their behavior toward kin in a manner consistent with this prediction. Morphogenesis also may be sensitive to kinship environment, particularly in species where certain individuals facultatively develop structures that can be used against conspecifics as weaponry. We tested this hypothesis by examining whether and how consanguinity affected the probability that a structurally distinctive carnivore phenotype, which is opportunistically cannibalistic, would be produced in plains spadefoot toad tadpoles (Spea bombifrons) and southern spadefoot toad tadpoles (S. multiplicata). For tadpoles of S. multiplicata, individuals were significantly more likely to express the carnivore phenotype in mixed sibship groups than in pure sibship groups. For tadpoles of S. bombifrons, individuals were significantly more likely to express the carnivore phenotype when reared alone than in pure sibship groups. Both outcomes were independent of food availability or sibship specific differences in size or growth rate, and waterborne chemical signals from nonkin were sufficient to trigger expression of the carnivore phenotype. Our results suggest that morphogenesis may be responsive to kinship environment in any species or population that occurs as multiple, environmentally induced forms (polyphenism) that differ in their ability to help or to harm others.  相似文献

Predation threat-associated behavioral response was studied in Rana temporalis tadpoles to discover the importance of predators’ visual and chemical cues (kairomones and diet-derived metabolites of consumed prey) in evoking antipredator behavior. The caged predators (dragonfly larvae) fed on prey tadpoles or insects (Notonecta spp.) and water conditioned with the predators provided the threat stimuli to the tadpole prey. The predators’ visual cues were ineffective in evoking antipredator behaviors in the tadpole prey. However, exposure to caged tadpole-fed predators or water conditioned with tadpole-fed predators elicited predator avoidance behavior in the tadpoles; they stayed away from the predators, significantly reduced swimming activity (swimming time and distance traveled), and increased burst speed. Interestingly, exposure to water conditioned with starved predators did not elicit any antipredator behavior in the prey. Further, the antipredator responses of predator-experienced tadpoles were significantly greater than those exhibited by predator-na?ve tadpoles. The study shows that R. temporalis tadpoles assess predation threat based exclusively on chemical cues emanating from the predators’ dietary metabolites and that the inclusion of conspecific prey items in the diet of the predators is perceived as a threat. The study also shows that antipredator behavior in these tadpoles is innate and is enhanced during subsequent encounters with the predators.  相似文献
