The seeds of Cuscuta pedicellata have been investigated by transmissionand scanning electron microscopy. Additional observations havebeen made on seeds of C. campestris by SEM only. The seed coatconsists of an outer single epidermis, two different palisadelayers, and an inner multiparenchyma layer. The outer epidermalwall in C. pedicellata has a thick cuticle and zones rich inpectic substances. The thicker ‘U-shaped’ cell wallsin the outer palisade layer are strengthened by a wall layerof hemicellulose. The inner palisade layer has thick walledcells with a ‘light line’. The inner cell wall ofthe compressed multiparenchyma layer has a thin cuticle. A fairlythick cuticle is positioned directly on the endosperm surface. The aleurone cell walls are different from the remaining endospermwalls. The latter are thick and believed to be of galactomannans. There is a ‘clear’ zone between the plasmalemmaand the cell wall in the aleurone cells. The embryo cells arepacked with lipids and proteins. In Cuscuta campestris mostendosperm has been absorbed during the seed development. Theembryo apex has two minute leaf primordia. The features of theCuscuta seeds are discussed in relation to functional and environmentalconditions. During the first 100 days after sowing (March-June) the followingchanges took place at the terminal shoot apices of Picea sitchensisseedlings: plastochrones (T) decreased from over 24 h to 4 h;apical domes enlarged from less than 0·20 mm to 0·45mm diameter (D); the ‘projected’ area of tissuesproduced by the apical domes (i.e. viewed from above) increasedin amount from less than 0·012 to 0·024 mm2 day-1;about 15 per cent of this tissue was re-invested in the apicaldomes, the rest was used to produce primordia; and the volume-doublingtimes of the apical dome tissues decreased from over 150 h to50 h. After 100 days there was no further re-investment in theapical domes, but the domes did not decrease abruptly in size.Less tissue was produced per day, but the primordia were smallerso that the rate of primordia formation did not fall precipitously.Plastochrone ratios were inversely related to D, but the relationshipbetween T and D depended on whether T was decreasing or increasing.Progenies which were known to be fast growing tended to build-uptheir apical domes rapidly (i.e. have large ‘re-investmentratios’) and to be capable of producing small primordia. These attributes can evidently be evaluated on seedlings andcould help to lessen the cost of tree breeding progeny-testprogrammes. meristem, Picea sitchensis, Sitka spruce, growth, shoot apex  相似文献

The leaf initiation rate in Fragaria vesca (var. ‘RoyalSovereign’) has been compared with the elongation rateof the leaf primordia at different seasons. Certain conceptionsof growth correlation within the bud are presented. Experimentson the nature of elongation and emergence of primordia are described, and the causes of emergence are discussed.  相似文献

This review compares new developmental models on flowering andother vascular plants with evolutionary hypotheses formulatedby Agnes Arber (1879–1960) and like-minded botanists.Special emphasis is laid on philosophical basics such as perspectivism, pluralism about evolutionary modelling, continuum way of thinking, and fuzzy logic. Arber's perspective is best labelled as F uzzyA rberian M orphology (FAM Approach). Its proponents (‘FAMmers’)treat structural categories (e.g. ‘roots’, ‘shoots’,‘stems’, ‘leaves’, ‘stipules’)in vascular plants as concepts with fuzzy borderlines allowingintermediates (including transitional forms, developmental mosaics). The FAM Approach complements Cla ssical Plant M orphology (ClaMApproach), which is the traditional approach in botany. ClaMproponents (‘ClaMmers’) postulate that the structuralcategories of vascular plants are regarded as concepts withclear-cut borderlines and without intermediates. However, duringthe evolution of vascular plants, the root-shoot distinctionand the stem-leaf distinction have become blurred several timesdue to developmental changes, resulting in organs with uniquecombinations of features. This happened, for example, in thebladderworts (Utricularia, Lentibulariaceae). When focusingon the ‘leaf’, the FAM Approach is identical toArber's ‘partial-shoot theory of the leaf’ and Sinha's‘leaf shoot continuum model’. A compound leaf canrepeat the developmental pathway of the whole shoot, at leastto some degree. For example, compound leaves of Chisocheton(Meliaceae)with indeterminate apical growth and three-dimensional branchingmay be seen as developmental mosaics sharing some growth processeswith whole shoots! We focus here on the FAM Approach becausethis perspective is especially promising for developmental geneticistsstudying flowering and other vascular plants. Plants of two cultivars of Callistephus chinensis (Queen ofthe Market and Johannistag) were grown in 8 h of daylight perday with one of the following treatments given during the 16h dark period: (a) darkness—‘uninterrupted night’,(b) I h of light in the middle of the dark period—a ‘nightbreak’, (c) I min of light in every hour of the dark period—‘cycliclighting’, (d) light throughout—‘continuouslight’. The plants receiving uninterrupted dark periods remained compactand rosetted in habit with small leaves, while leaf expansion, stem extension, and flower initiation were promoted in all threeillumination treatments (b, c, d). Although these three treatmentsproduced similar increases in leaf area, continuous light wasthe most effective for the promotion of both stem growth andflower initiation while cyclic lighting was generally more effectivethan a I-h night break. Continuous light also caused more dry matter to be divertedto stems at any given vegetative dry weight and it was shownthat the stem weight ratio of both varieties was correlatedwith stem length.  相似文献

The effect of tetraploidy on leaf characteristics and net gasexchange was studied in diploid (2x ) and autotetraploid (4x) ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.)Osb.) and ‘Femminello’ lemon (Citrus limon (L.)Burm. f.) leaves. Comparisons between ploidy levels were madeunder high irradiance (I) in a growth chamber or low total Iin a glasshouse. Tetraploids of both species had thicker leaves, larger mesophyll cell volume and lower light transmittance thandiploids regardless of growth I. Mesophyll surface area perunit leaf area of 2x leaves was 5–15% greater than on4x leaves. Leaf thickness and mesophyll cell volume were greaterin high I leaves than low I leaves. In high I, average leafarea was similar for 2x and 4x leaves, whereas in low I it was30% greater in 4x than in 2x leaves. Nitrogen and chlorophyllconcentration per cell increased with ploidy level in both growthconditions. The ratio of chlorophyll a:b was 25% greater in2x than in 4x leaves. When net CO2assimilation rate (ACO2) wasbased on leaf area, 4x orange leaves had 24–35% lowerACO2than their diploids. There were no significant differencesin ACO2between 2x and 4x orange or lemon leaves when expressedon a per cell basis. Overall, lower ACO2per unit leaf area oftetraploids was related to increase in leaf thickness, largermesophyll cell volume, the decrease in mesophyll area exposedto internal air spaces, and the lower ratio between cell surfaceto cell volume. Such changes probably increased the resistanceto CO2diffusion to the site of carboyxlation in the chloroplasts. Impedance Spectroscopy in Frost Hardiness Evaluation of Rhododendron Leaves   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Impedance spectroscopy was used in studying frost hardinessof leaves of two diploid rhododendron cultivars, RhododendronL. ‘PJM’ and R. ‘Cunningham's White’,and their tetraploid derivatives, R. ‘Northern Starburst’(NSB) and CW4. After the growing season and initial hardeningin a greenhouse, plants were subjected to an acclimation regimein a phytotron: 3 consecutive weeks at +5, +1 and -2°C each.Hardiness was studied with controlled freezing tests beforeeach decrease in temperature and at the end of the experiment, based on data of extracellular resistance reand relaxation time of the frost-exposed leaves. The correlation of the two estimateswas 0.92. Generally, the diploid clones had better frost hardinessthan the tetraploid clones. At the end of the experiment, frosthardiness of the diploid ‘PJM’ was -28.7°C andthat of the tetraploid NSB -20.6°C. Leaves of the diploid‘Cunningham's White’ and of the tetraploid CW4 hardenedto -32.0°C and -20.9°C, respectively. Frost hardinessestimated by impedance spectroscopy correlated well with earlierresults based on visual scoring (r = 0.81–0.86) and electrolyteleakage tests (r = 0.84–0.90), but results from impedancespectroscopy indicated weaker hardiness than the other tests. The difference between the results from impedance spectroscopyand the other tests was smaller and more coherent within the‘Cunningham's White’ clones than within ‘PJM’and NSB. Changes in extracellular and intracellular resistanceof non-frozen leaves during the acclimation correlated withthe changes in frost hardiness of ‘Cunningham's White’clones, but not with those of ‘PJM’ and NSB, whichbelong to another subspecies.Copyright 2000 Annals of BotanyCompany Cold resistance, evergreen, frost hardiness, impedance spectroscopy, polyploid, Rhododendron, tetraploid  相似文献

A detailed morphological study of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth) was conducted under ‘vegetative’and ‘reproductive’ growth conditions (short andlong photoperiods) and at different temperatures. Perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Westerwolds ryegrass (Loliummuhiflorum Lam.) were compared during vegetative growth. Prairie grass had higher leaf appearance rates (leaves per tillerper day) and lower site filling (tillers per tiller per leafappearance interval) than the ryegrass species. Tillering rates(tillers per tiller per day) were also lower, except under vegetativeconditions at 4C. Low tiller number in prairie grass was notdue to lack of tiller sites but a result of poor filling ofthese sites. Lower site filling occurred because of increaseddelays in appearance of the youngest axillary tiller and lackof axillary tillers emerging from basal tiller buds. In prairiegrass, no tillers came from coleoptile buds while only occasionallydid prophyll buds develop tillers. Low tiller number in prairiegrass was compensated for by greater tiller weight. Prairiegrass had more live leaves per tiller, greater area per leafand a high leaf area per plant. Considerable variation between cultivars was found in prairiegrass. The cultivar ‘Bellegarde’ had high leaf appearance, large leaves and rapid reproductive development, but had lowlevels of site filling, tillering rate, final tiller numberand herbage quality during reproductive growth. ‘Primabel’tended to have the opposite levels for these parameters, while‘Grasslands Matua’ was intermediate and possiblyprovided the best balance of all plant parameters. prairie grass, Bromus willdenowii Kunth, perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., Westerwolds ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam., temperature, photoperiod, leaf appearance, leaf area, tillering, site filling, tillering sites, yield  相似文献

Crop phenology is one of the most important characters influencingproductivity in a given environment. Narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinusangustifolius L.) is a major grain legume crop in southern Australiawith general phenological adaptation to this Mediterranean-typeenvironment. However, it is an indeterminate crop with severalassociated limitations to productivity, such as overlappingvegetative and reproductive growth, late grain filling and sometimesexcessive vegetative growth. Here we studied two novel typesof narrow-leafed lupin with restricted branching, which mightbe useful for overcoming these problems. These restricted branchinglupins arose spontaneously within a breeding population, inthe case of ‘Tallerack’, and within a farmer's cropin the case of ‘ Hurst’ and we compared them withthe ‘Merrit’, which is widely grown and has thenormal indeterminate branching habit. The morphology and developmentof the main shoot of these genotypes were similar. However,‘Hurst’ had much larger leaves. There were alsostriking differences in the lateral branches of the restrictedbranching types; they had fewer leaves than ‘Merrit’and flowered earlier. These differences were most marked in‘ Hurst’, where the upper main stem branches werereduced to a single floret in the axil of main stem leaves, and these flowers often exhibited abnormal morphology. Observations in Java and Ghana have shown that sugar-cane (Saccharumofficinarum) varieties may considerably differ in outward appearanceof the leaf spindle. In some varieties the leaf spindle is comparatively‘closed’ (POJ 2878), in others ‘open’(Ghana 1). Likewise the differences in length between successiveleaves, which are not yet full-grown, may be comparatively large(POJ 2878) or small (Ghana 1). Investigations recently carriedout in Ghana confirmed the supposition that these differencesare partly caused by differences in growth distribution. Byrefining an old but still suitable observation technique itwas further possible to obtain new information about the courseof the elongation processes in leaves and stems of sugar-cane.  相似文献

Diurnal laminar reorientation was followed in solar-trackingleaves of Lavatera cretica L. under simulated conditions. Asimulated ‘sun’ was moved over the lamina in a 180?arc in the vertical plane of the mid-vein, at an angular velocityof 15? h–1 in a regime of 12-h photoperiods. In one groupof plants the petioles of the experimental leaves were arrangedto face ‘sunrise’, while in the other they werearranged to face ‘sunset’. At ‘sunrise’,the laminae in both groups, which were inclined towards theanticipated direction of ‘sunrise’, changed theirelevation towards the rising ‘sun’, resulting inprogressive reduction in the angle of incidence (AI) of lighton the laminar surface (AI= differential between laminar and‘solar’ elevation). As a result, laminar and ‘solar’elevation converged, and laminar reorientation gradually ceased, until the ‘solar’ elevation had passed the normalto the laminar surface (AI=0?). laminar reorientation was thenresumed, but its direction was reversed to follow the directionof ‘solar’ reorientation. During most of the remaining‘day’, laminar elevation (LE) trailed that of the‘sun’ by an average of 11?-14?. Laminar reorientationthen anticipated ‘sunset’ by starting to slow down60 to 90min in advance. During the 12-h dark period, the laminareoriented towards the anticipated direction of the subsequent‘sunrise’. The time-course of nocturnal reorientationwas qualitatively different in the two groups of experimentalplants. The time-course of diurnal phototropism under naturaland simulated conditions is analysed and compared and differencesand similarities between them are discussed. The ‘core-skin’ hypothesis postulates that secondarilythickened plants behave energetically as an inert ‘core’covered by an active ‘skin’, the ‘skin’being two-imensional, the ‘core’ three-dimensional.This would explain the ‘self-thinning ‘or‘–3/2’ rule of plant ecology, that is, the tendencyfor log (dry weight per plant) and log (number of plants perunit area) to progress along a straight line relationship, withslope = – 3/2’. The hypothesis was tested as follows. Plant nitrogen contentwas used as an estimate of the mass of ‘skin’ perplant, and dry weight as an estimate of the mass of the ‘core’.As plants mature the slope of the relationship between y = log(mass of nitrogen per plant) and x = log (mass of dry matterper plant) is expected to decline from an initial value of 1.0towards a final value of 0.66. The intercept of the relationshipis expected to reflect the intrinsic content of ‘skin’per unit of ‘core’. Genotypic variation in thisparameter should cause genotypic differences in the maximumattainable yield of biomass per unit area. The expectations were investigated by fitting the function y= p+qx+r exp – x to 30 sets of data on plant nitrogencontent, plant weight and time in 18 different vegetables. Simplelinear regressions of y on x were fitted to more limited setsof data on weights and nitrogen contents of mature trees. Theexpectations were, with some minor exceptions, confirmed. Young plants of Banksia hookeriana were grown in acid-washedsand with adequate phosphate and water supply, and a proportionwere inoculated with Phytophthora cinnamomi. There were no majordifferences in growth between uninoculated and infected plants, but there was a large increase in uptake of 32P with increasingroot disease. In healthy plants 32P uptake was greatest in youngleaf tissue, but in diseased plants labelled phosphate was directedmore towards older leaves where the activity was almost twicethat of young leaves. Enhanced uptake with disease was ascribed to possible blockageof the ‘message’ or ‘signal’ of phosphatetranslocation from shoot to root, such that the diseased rootincorrectly treated the shoot as P deficient and increased Puptake. Cell Division and Expansion in the Growth of the Leaf   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Volumes and numbers of cells were determined at different stagesof development of the fifth leaf of Lupinus albus, and eachof the second pair and the tenth leaf of Helianthus annuus. In the case of the second pair of sunflower leaves the valuescover the whole life of the leaf from initiation to senescence. During both primordial development and the ensuing ‘grandperiod of growth’ division is the determinant of growth.About 10 per cent. of the cells in the fully grown leaf arelaid down before leaf-emergence; the remaining 90 per cent.are formed during unfolding. Division does not cease in thelupin leaf or the second pair of sunflower leaves until theyhave reached half their maximum area. The tenth leaf, on theother hand, is as much as three-quarters fully grown beforedivision ceases. Cell expansion commences soon after leaf initiation and continuesthroughout the life of the leaf. With lupin and the second pairof sunflower leaves there is a fourfold increase in the averagevolume of the cells before emergence from the apical region.During unfolding, there is a further tenfold increase in theaverage volume of the cells of the lupin leaf, and a twentyfoldincrease with the second pair of sunflower leaves. Expansioncontinues after the cessation of division but this further increasein volume is comparatively small. The data are discussed in relation to the ‘two phase’hypothesis of leaf development.  相似文献

Extracts of small and mature-size lupin pods yielded four substancesaffecting the growth of wheat-coleoptile sections: one acidpromotor (A), two acid inhibitors(B and X), and one neutralinhibitor(Y). Inhibitor B was extremely active, however, coleoptile sectionsshowed no signs of toxic effects; they resumed growth at a rapidrate after rinsing them and adding ß-indolylaceticand (IAA) to the medium. 1 µg of IAA was required to counteractthe effect of ‘B’ extracted from 230 mg. Of tissue. On an equal fresh weight basis the inhibiting action of ‘B’in lupin pods was 500–1,500 times more potent than thatof ‘inhibitor ß’ in etiolated pea seedlings. Small pods of plants infected with pea-mosaic virus yielded3 times the amount of ‘A’ of healthy plants (equivalentto 1 µg. IAA 0.3 µg. IAA per 25 g. of tissue respectively),and approximately the amount of ‘B’. Mature podsof virus-infected plants again yielded more‘A’,but also 2? times more ‘B’ than pods of healthyplants. Healthy pods yielded more ‘A’ than virus-infectedpods, and there was no difference in ‘X’. A lupin abscission test was developed and the effects of proximaland distal application of -naphthyl acetic acid (NAA) are presented, and discussed with respect to results of other abscission tests. ‘A’ accelerated abscission when applied proximally, and delayed or prevented it when applied distally. ‘B’strongly accelerated abscission when applied in either way.A possible mechanism explaining the abscission-inducing effectof developing pods on later flowers is discussed in terms ofthe substances ‘A’ and ‘B’. The partlyprevented abscission observed on virus-infected plants was foundto agree well with the proposed mechanism.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of the products of photosynthesis wasstudied in gladiolus plants (Gladiolus grandiflorus cv Eurovision)in four stages of development I, plants having a very younginflorescence still enclosed between the leaves; II, plantswith a young inflorescence just emerged from the leaves, III,plants at full bloom, IV, plants with young fruits. The first, third or sixth foliage leaf was labelled with 14CO2, and subsequentdistribution in the plant was determined Results were expressedas a percentage of translocated 14C accumulated by each partof the plant which gives a measure of its ‘sink strength’,or as ‘relative sink activity’ (RSA) which is independentof the size of the indicated organ. There are two competing sinks in the developing gladiolus—theinflorescence and the new corm. When RSA is the criterton theinflorescence constitutes the main sink irrespective of thesource leaf from the first stage until flowering. With the subsequentwilting of the flowers and fruit set RSA of the inflorescencedeclines rapidly and the new corm becomes the main sink When‘sink strength’ is the criterton it appears thatthe inflorescence acts as a very weak sink when it is youngand becomes increasingly stronger until flowering and then declinessteeply. Sink strength of the corm declines during the developmentof the inflorescence and then increases again steeply with wiltingof the flowers and fruit set. There are small differences betweenthe various source leaves. The young new corm acts as a strongsink for the lower foliage leaf and progressively weaker forupper leaves. Each of four amino acid conjugates of IAA was able to replacethe IAA requirement for xylogenesis in lettuce pith explants, when supplied at concentrations ten to 100 times those optimalfor IAA. Tracheary development induced by these conjugates tendedto be slightly slower and less in amount than with IAA, andthe tracheary strands shorter and less regular. Responses differedsomewhat among the four conjugates: IAA-D, L-aspartate gavedevelopment most like that with free IAA, and IAA-D, L-phenylalanineoften yielded the weakest tracheary development, while responsesto IAA-L-alanine and IAA-glycine were intermediate. The resultsare interpreted in terms of the ‘bound’ IAA conjugatesdiffusing into the pith explants and becoming xylogenic onlyon hydrolysis to ‘free’ IAA. As tracheary strandformation is believed to result from IAA fluxes, it seems thatthe free IAA also moved through the discs, presumably towardsthe surfaces where it degrades rapidly. Tracheary strand formationin these explants can be compared with vascular strand formationin the normal shoot tip, where IAA conjugates (auxin ‘precursors’)move acropetally and are hydrolysed to free IAA especially inthe young leaf primordia, we suggest, yielding local sourcesof IAA which may contribute both to the phyllotactic spacingof primordia and, moving basipetally, to the definition of theauxin pathways that develop as procambial strands behind individualleaf primordia.
