Shorebirds show high variability in parental care strategies among species, populations, and environments. Research on shorebird
parental sex roles can help to understand the selective pressures that shape avian breeding strategies. Although several studies
have examined parental care strategies in holarctic shorebirds, very little research has been conducted in the tropics. Here
we examined parental sex roles during territorial defence, incubation, and chick-rearing in Malaysian plovers Charadrius peronii in the Gulf of Thailand. The costs and gains of particular parental behaviour may vary between the sexes and can be affected
differently by environmental factors and chick age. Thus we also examined how temperature, prey availability, chick or embryo
age, and time of day affected parental sex roles. Males spent more time defending territories and were further away from chicks
whereas females spent more time incubating eggs. Both adults contributed to chick defence during disturbances throughout the
entire chick-rearing period. Total nest attendance (sum of both sexes) was affected by the modelled temperature of an unincubated
egg. Prey availability, embryo age, and time of day had no effect on total nest attendance. Males adjusted incubation effort
in response to temperature only at high temperatures (>36°C) whereas females adjusted nest attendance at high and low temperatures.
Chick age had no effect on the proportion of time adults spent defending territories or responding to disturbance. Pairs were
more likely to fledge chicks if both the male and female spent more time defending territories. For Malaysian plovers, high
cooperation between the sexes during parental care may help to achieve high quality breeding territories, maintain body conditions
during hot days, protect offspring from predators and attacking conspecifics, and contribute to high lifetime reproductive

Uncovering factors that shape variation in brain morphology remains a major challenge in evolutionary biology. Recently, it has been shown that brain size is positively associated with level of parental care behavior in various taxa. One explanation for this pattern is that the cognitive demands of performing complex parental care may require increased brain size. This idea is known as the parental brain hypothesis (PBH). We set out to test the predictions of this hypothesis in wild populations of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). These fish are commonly known to exhibit (1) uniparental male care and (2) sexual dimorphism in brain size (males>females). To test the PBH, we took advantage of the existence of closely related populations of stickleback that display variation in parental care behavior: common marine threespine sticklebacks (uniparental male care) and white threespine sticklebacks (no care). To begin, we quantified genetic differentiation among two common populations and three white populations from Nova Scotia. We found overall low differentiation among populations, although FST was increased in between‐type comparisons. We then measured the brain weights of males and females from all five populations along with two additional common populations from British Columbia. We found that sexual dimorphism in brain size is reversed in white stickleback populations: males have smaller brains than females. Thus, while several alternatives need to be ruled out, the PBH appears to be a reasonable explanation for sexual dimorphism in brain size in threespine sticklebacks. 相似文献

We studied parental behaviour of two populations of Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) living in environments with different reproductive constraints: a northern Italy population, resident, with relatively long reproductive season and almost stable prey availability, and a western Finland population, long-distance migrant, with short reproductive season and fluctuating availability of main prey (voles). The Finnish population was studied during a low vole availability year. We aimed to test the supposition that in variable environments the few pairs capable of breeding during low prey availability years show high-quality parental care. To estimate the quality of parental care in both Finnish and Italian pairs we measured the difference in the number of prey delivered by the male and by the female within each pair. The parental care, measured by that parameter, was greater among Italian pairs during both the incubation and early nestling periods. However, this was not the case in the late nestling period, when food requirements of offspring are greater. Moreover, the Finnish and Italian pairs produced about the same number of fledglings. Therefore, our data supported the initial supposition and we conclude that the few Finnish pairs capable of breeding in a low vole availability year show parental care similar to Italian pairs. 相似文献

The safe harbor hypothesis includes the suggestion that parental care causes the embryonic stage to be the safest harbor, and, therefore, egg size will increase in populations with parental care to decrease the duration of subsequent, higher risk stages. Neither the safe habor hypothesis nor r and K theory seem adequate to explain the correlation between egg size and the presence/absence of parental care among salamanders, a group in which there is a further correlation between the larval (hatchling) habitat and egg size/parental care. Pond-breeding salamanders generally have small eggs and lack parental care, and stream-breeding salamanders generally have large eggs and parental care. I argue that the fundamental difference in the food available to hatchling salamanders between lentic (plankton-rich) and lotic (plankton-poor) environments selects for relatively lower parental investment in the lentic environment. From the standpoint of parental fitness, small (more numerous) hatchlings have a greater payoff where the available food is mall and dense (zooplankton in lentic environments), and large hatchlings are selectively advantageous where the food is of large size and less dense (benthic invertebrates in lotic environments). Selection for larger hatchlings in lotic environments results in longer embryonic periods and, ceteris paribus, greater total embryonic mortality. Embryo hiding and guarding have evolved among lotic-breeding salamanders as compensatory mechanisms to reduce the rate of embryonic mortality. In this view, parental care is a consequence of selection for larger egg size and not an umbrella that allows egg size to increase, contrary to the safe harbor hypothesis. The relationship between variance in parental investment and food available to offspring, developed here for salamanders, may be of general significance. Mortality is U-shaped with age for many species, declining from birth to sexual maturity, then rising in adulthood, sometimes with postreproductive survival. We show analytically why the optimal life history of a species with determinate growth is likely to have this shape. An organism allocates energy among somatic growth, fertility and maintenance/survival at each age. Adults may transfer energy to juveniles, who can then use more energy than they produce. Optimal juvenile mortality declines from birth to maturity, either to protect the increasingly valuable cumulative investments by adults in juveniles or to exploit the compounding effects of early investment in somatic growth, since early growth raises subsequent energy production, which in turn supports further growth. Optimal adult mortality rises after maturity as expected future reproduction declines as in Hamilton, but intergenerational transfers lead to postreproductive survival as in Lee. Here the Hamilton and transfer effects are divided by probabilities of survival in contrast to the fitness impact measures, which are relevant for mutation-selection balance. If energetic efficiency rises strongly with adult experience, then adult mortality could initially be flat or declining. 相似文献

Parental care and sexual selection are highly interrelated. Understanding the evolution of sex‐specific patterns of parental care and sexual selection is a major focus of current evolutionary ecology research and requires empirical studies that simultaneously quantify components of both parental care and sexual selection in a single species. In this study, we quantify the dynamics of paternal care and sexual selection in the giant water bug Belostoma lutarium. Specifically, we examined (1) which sex potentially experiences sexual selection, (2) which traits, if any, are associated with attaining a mate by males and/or females (i.e. which traits are potentially under selection), and (3) which male and female traits, if any, relate to paternal care and offspring survival. Our findings suggest that (1) males are likely the choosier sex and that heavier females are more likely to mate than smaller females, (2) that female body weight is under selection if female weight is a trait that is stable within a given individual and (3) body size is sexually dimorphic, with females being the larger sex in this species. There was no evidence of male or female traits being linked to offspring survival in this species, although this is potentially due to the lack of egg predators in our study. We discuss our findings in relation to the evolution of sex roles and future avenues of research in this species. 相似文献

The selective history of a population can influence its subsequent evolution, an effect known as historical contingency. We previously observed that five of six replicate populations that were evolved in a glucose‐limited environment for 2000 generations, then switched to lactose for 1000 generations, had higher fitness increases in lactose than populations started directly from the ancestor. To test if selection in glucose systematically increased lactose evolvability, we started 12 replay populations—six from a population subsample and six from a single randomly selected clone—from each of the six glucose‐evolved founder populations. These replay populations and 18 ancestral populations were evolved for 1000 generations in a lactose‐limited environment. We found that replay populations were initially slightly less fit in lactose than the ancestor, but were more evolvable, in that they increased in fitness at a faster rate and to higher levels. This result indicates that evolution in the glucose environment resulted in genetic changes that increased the potential of genotypes to adapt to lactose. Genome sequencing identified four genes—iclR, nadR, spoT, and rbs—that were mutated in most glucose‐evolved clones and are candidates for mediating increased evolvability. Our results demonstrate that short‐term selective costs during selection in one environment can lead to changes in evolvability that confer longer term benefits. 相似文献

Phase III of Sewall Wright's shifting-balance process involves the spread of a superior genotype throughout a structured population. However, a number of authors have suggested that this sort of adaptive change is unlikely under biologically plausible conditions. We studied relevant mathematical models, and the results suggest that the concerns about phase III of the shifting-balance process are justified, but only if environmental conditions are stable. If environmental conditions change in a way that alters species range, then phase III can be effective, leading to an enhancement of adaptedness throughout a structured population. 相似文献

Summary Using a model that allows the mean and variance of investment by parents in offspring to evolve in response to change in degree of temporal environmental variation, this paper shows that both parental investment parameters should increase with increases in temporal variation. If offspring receiving greater parental investment are viable over a broader range of environmental conditions, then increased temporal environmental variation can select for increases in parental investment. The variance in parental investment also may increase with increases in temporal variation, but there is a threshold level of temporal variation that must be exceeded before variance in parental investment is adaptive. Thus phenotypic variance in parental investment is not adaptive in all temporally varying environments. Further, increased overlap among generations reduces the expected effects of temporal variation on the mean and variance in parental investment. Thus a negative correlation between length of reproductive life and both measures of investment is expected. There is support for the predictions of this model in some animal groups, but not among plants. Possible reasons for the lack of support among plants are discussed and directions for future research aimed at distinguishing adaptive and maladaptive phenotypic variance in parental investment are suggested. 相似文献

Parental care is incorporated into a prey-predator model in which immature predators are taken care of by their parents. It is assumed that adult predators confront the problem to stay home to protect offspring or to go out to forage. The global dynamics of the mathematical model is analyzed by means of analytical methods and numerical simulations. Conditions for the extinction of predator populations are established and the manners in which predators become extinct are revealed. Bifurcation analysis shows that the model admits changes from the extinction of predators to stable coexistence at a positive equilibrium point, and then to stage-structure induced oscillations. I studied the parental care behavior of the Madagascar paradise flycatcher Terpsiphone mutata in northwestern Madagascar. I especially focused on feeding, brooding and vigilance behaviors. Feeding rate did not differ between males and females, but females spent more time at the nest than males. Females dedicated their time to brooding, while males perched on the nest and were vigilant. Both parents changed the feeding rate in relation to brood size, so the feeding rate per nestling was not different among nests of different brood size. Duration of brooding by females increased with decreasing brood size, suggesting that the Royama effect, the pattern of lower feeding rate per nestling in larger broods, did not apply in this study. Males spent more time on vigilance than females. Anti-predator vigilance by males should be important for nestling survival given the high predation pressure typical of this population. In conclusion, males provide considerable parental care probably to minimize nestling starvation and to avoid nest predation. My results are not consistent with the general pattern of less parental effort by males in monogamous, sexually dimorphic species. 相似文献

Summary Laboratory offspring of wild-caught voles Clethrionomys glareolus and Microtus agrestis, bred for 1 year under constant conditions, were examined with regard to sex ratios and weights at weaning and at 2 months of age. C. glareolus exhibits female territoriality and M. agrestis male territoriality in summer. The adults die away in late summer-autumn. Early-summer young mature in the year of birth but late-summer young do not reach maturity until the following year. C. glareolus young showed a male bias in early summer and a female bias in late summer. Conditions were the opposite but less clear in M. agrestis. C. glareolus males grew comparatively faster than M. agrestis males and showed a markedly higher early summer male: female weight ratio at 2 months of age. Maternal investment thus appears clearly related to the social system; the sex with the largest number and highest quality of young was that which was not limited in number by territoriality. Some breeders select inbreds from many F2 or backcross breeding populations, each with relatively few progenies. Other breeders select inbreds from only a few breeding populations, each with many progenies. My objectives were to: (1) determine the relative importance of parental selection, number of breeding populations, and size of each population, and (2) find optimum combinations between number and size of breeding populations. I assumed that a breeder has resources to test a total of 2,000 recombinant inbreds for a quantitative trait that was controlled by 100 additive loci and had a heritability of 0.20, 0.60, or 1.0. The parental inbreds had an inherent pedigree structure due to advanced cycle breeding. The parental inbreds were ranked according to their mean performance, and breeding populations were made among all parents, the top 25% of parents, and the top 10% of parents. I found that the issue of number versus size of breeding populations was only secondary compared with the ability to identify, prior to making the crosses, the breeding populations with the highest mean performance. For a given level of effectiveness of parental selection, the selection response was largest when the maximum number of breeding populations was used. The effect of the number of breeding populations was minor, however, when selection was practiced among the parents or when heritability was less than 1.0. The results suggested that, in practice, large selection responses could be obtained with a wide range of combinations between number and size of breeding populations.Communicated by H.C. Becker 相似文献
