Do biological relations ground responsibilities between biological fathers and their offspring? Few think biological relations ground either necessary or sufficient conditions for responsibility. Nevertheless, many think biological relations ground responsibility at least partially. Various scenarios, such as cases concerning the responsibilities of sperm donors, have been used to argue in favor of biological relations as partially grounding responsibilities. In this article, I seek to undermine the temptation to explain sperm donor scenarios via biological relations by appealing to an overlooked feature of such scenarios. More specifically, I argue that sperm donor scenarios may be better explained by considering the unique abilities of agents involved. Appealing to unique ability does not eliminate the possibility of biological relations providing some explanation for perceived responsibilities on the part of biological fathers. However, since it is unclear exactly why biological relations are supposed to ground responsibility in the first place, and rather clear why unique ability grounds responsibility in those scenarios where it is exhibited, the burden of proof seems shifted to those advocating biological relations as grounds of responsibility to provide an explanation. Since this seems unlikely, I conclude it is best to avoid appealing to biological relations as providing grounds for responsibility. 相似文献

Moral distress in healthcare has been an increasingly prevalent topic of discussion. Most authors characterize it as a negative phenomenon, while few have considered its potentially positive value. In this essay, I argue that moral distress can reveal and affirm some of our most important concerns as moral agents. Indeed, the experience of it under some circumstances appears to be partly constitutive of an honorable character and can allow for crucial moral maturation. The potentially positive value, then, is twofold; moral distress carries both aretaic and instrumental value. Granted, this position is not without its caveats, but by making these clear, I provide a novel framework for policy recommendations regarding when, if ever, we should work to reduce moral distress. 相似文献

A central question in the ethical debate on the practice of relinquishing in vitro fertilization surplus embryos for family building is whether we ought to think of it more in terms of donating these embryos or in terms of having them adopted. Deciding between these two alternatives is more than a matter of mere terminology. It has an impact on normative questions, e.g., on the question of what criteria for parent selection ought to be applied to the recipients of the embryos, and on the moral evaluation of the act of ‘donating’ the embryo or ‘having it adopted’. In this article, I defend the view that we should conceptualize the relinquishment of spare embryos according to the adoption model, not as a donation. Section 2 sketches the outline of the argument by making clear how we may ground a defense of the adoption model in a theory of parental responsibility without implicitly elevating the moral status of the embryo. Section 3 contains a preliminary defense of the adoption model that draws on geneticism as what seems to me the most persuasive theory of parental responsibility. In section 4, I examine three objections to geneticism and either rebut them or, insofar as they are justified, try to accommodate them into my view. In section 5, I point out some features that distinguish embryo adoption from the adoption of (born) children. I contend, however, that these differences are compatible with the adoption model. Several recent articles have weighed in on the question of whether moral philosophers can be counted as moral experts. One argument denying this has been rejected by both sides of the debate. According to this argument, the extent of disagreement in modern moral philosophy prevents moral philosophers from being classified as moral experts. Call this the Argument From Disagreement (AD). In this article, I defend a version of AD. Insofar as practical issues in moral philosophy are characterized by disagreement between moral philosophers who are more or less equally well credentialed on the issue, non‐philosophers have no good reasons to defer to their views. 相似文献

According to Rivka Weinberg, gametes are like enriched uranium: both are hazardous materials. Exposing human beings to enriched uranium can result in radioactivity and decreased life expectancy, while exposing sperm and ova to each other can result in the creation of needy innocent persons with full moral status. Weinberg argues that when we engage in activities that put our gametes at risk of joining with others and growing into persons, we assume the costs of that risky activity. She calls this the Hazmat Theory of parental responsibility. The theory is novel and important, and has far‐reaching consequences for the ethics of procreation, parenting, and population, implying among other things that that the only way to avoid acquiring parental responsibilities may be to “abstain from sexual intercourse or surgically interfere with our gamete‐release system.” For these reasons the theory merits careful scrutiny. In this article I criticize the theory's account of how parental responsibility is acquired and its treatment of the standard of care expected of gamete possessors, and argue that it fails to properly account for a distinction between procreative costs and parental responsibility. Even if gametes are hazardous, it does not follow that parental responsibility in Weinberg's sense is acquired whenever one brings new persons into existence. 相似文献

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is a major threat to public health and healthcare worldwide. In this article, we analyse and discuss the claim that taking actions to minimize AR is everyone's responsibility, focusing on individual moral responsibility. This should not be merely interpreted as a function of knowledge of AR and the proper use of antibiotics. Instead, we suggest a circumstantial account of individual responsibility for AR, where individuals do or do not engage in judicious antibiotic behaviour with different degrees of voluntariness. Furthermore, we suggest a notion of responsibility as a virtue, in which individuals have the opportunity to develop a sensitivity towards the AR theme and, consequently, are capable of engaging, actively and voluntarily, in judicious antibiotic behaviour. The development of such sensitivity depends on the creation of adequate circumstances, that is individual capacities and availability of resources. 相似文献

While in the context of western societies sperm is attributed with a wide range of meanings, in the context of assisted reproduction it has increasingly been treated as an alienable commodity. Yet despite attempts by medical professionals to encourage a disconnect between donors and their sperm, the latter continues in many instances to operate as a synecdoche for the former. This can be seen, for example, both in donor-conceived children's desire to know their donor and in donors' investments in the use of their sperm. This paper explores the latter example by providing a discourse analysis of the narratives of 30 Australian sperm donors, with a focus on how they accounted for the value and meaning of their sperm. Three broad themes are discussed: sperm as a marker of genetic legacy, responsibility for sperm as genetic material, and sperm as a “gift” to others. The implications of these understandings of sperm among donors are discussed in relation to outcomes for all parties involved in donor conception, and suggestions are made for recognizing the investments that donors may have in their sperm. 相似文献

Recent trends in biobanking indicate that the practices associated with the collection and use of human tissue samples and related health information are increasingly becoming premised on networks of biobanks. These networks and partnerships often involve international collaborations, as well as public–private partnerships. This article reports on the results of a study of people's attitudes towards biobanking and the biomedical use of tissue samples in Finland. Three approaches were used to study these attitudes: a population-based survey, focus group interviews among members of patient organizations and short interviews with research participants. In particular, we look at the attitudes of respondents in these three studies towards the use of tissue samples and use them as a catalyst to discuss two dimensions of biomedical research: public/private and domestic/international. Our discussion highlights how notions of value related to the use of tissue samples vary and provide contrasting perspectives and ambiguity that people may have towards various types of research partnerships and the benefits that may arise from them. 相似文献

A prompt transplantation of skin allografts on patients with severe, large body area burns is a preferred treatment, but depends on a suitable supply of tissue donors. Limiting factors include donors' identification, families consent, and following the standards – exclusion due to assessed transmissible diseases. To increase the current rate of skin donations to our regional skin bank, we reviewed the data of all potential organ donors, identified at Soroka University Medical Center from October 1997 to December 2000 and evaluated the causes for exclusion, especially due to HBV serological profile. 114/168 (67.9%) patients did not meet the indicated standards for organ donation, among which 20/114 patients (17.5%) positive for anti-HBc (anti-HBc+). 54/168 persons were declared brain dead, with consents obtained from 21 families. To discuss the intriguing approval of skin from potential donors with anti-HBc+ serology, the literature was reviewed, specifically – the reported outcomes of organ transplants from anti-HBc+ donors, updates of HBV and skin, available tests, and finally a look for a safe commendable algorithm. The results suggested that HBV might be replicating in the skin, but proven communication of HBV has not been reported following grafting skin from anti-HBc+ donors. Unlike other procured organs and tissues, grafted banked skin is a temporary cover, storable up to six years, under appropriate conditions. Hence, banking of skin from anti-HBc+ donors might be considered for future grafting of patients with identical serological profiles, presumably immune to a subsequent HBV infection, until a further re-evaluation of the standards. A number of philosophers have argued that alcoholics should receive lower priority for liver transplantations because they are morally responsible for their medical conditions. In this paper, I argue that this conclusion is false. Moral responsibility should not be used as a criterion for the allocation of medical resources. The reason I advance goes further than the technical problem of assessing moral responsibility. The deeper problem is that using moral responsibility as an allocation criterion undermines the functioning of medicine. 相似文献

This paper examines a number of social, ethical and cultural issues related to the application of biotechnology. The focus of the paper relies on two different cases of governing biotechnology in Portugal, referring to donation of biological material: the act of donation of eggs and sperm; and volunteers for donation of DNA material for the forensic national DNA database. We analyze the discourses on donation of biological material framing them in rhetorical devices of gift, altruism, informed consent and social responsibility. This comes blended with still unclear and emergent regulation and policies of access, retention, preservation and governing of biological material and of donors' identification. The risks are mitigated by narratives of science and technology as social progress and providers of public good and health benefits, as well as by underlining the individual responsibility in this domain and by reinforcing the rhetoric of gene quality, based on socio-cultural and bio-genetic criteria. 相似文献

Sperm donation is a widely accepted and increasingly common practice. In the standard case, a sperm donor sells sperm to an agency, waives his parental rights, and is absolved of parental responsibility. We tend to assume that this involves no problematic abandonment of parental responsibility. If we regard the donor as having parental responsibilities at all, we may think that his parental responsibilities are transferred to the sperm recipients. But, if a man creates a child accidentally, via contraception failure, we tend to assume that the man does indeed have parental responsibilities. Assessing these contrasting conclusions requires a theory of parental responsibility. I analyse prevalent theories of what makes someone parentally responsible and show that none of these theories can withstand scrutiny. I propose a new theory of parental responsibility, which, I argue, is more plausible than the alternatives. My theory of parental responsibility is based on our ownership and control over hazardous materials, namely, our gametes. I show that neither my theory, nor the theories I reject, can support our contrasting intuitions. I conclude that sperm donors are fathers, with parental responsibility. I argue that the alternative conclusion, that neither sperm donors nor accidental fathers are parentally responsible for their resulting offspring, is less plausible. I then consider whether parental responsibility can be transferred and argue that it is far from clear that it can. Finally, I address objections and consider some practical implications of these views. 相似文献

Background. Transplant teams evaluate potential organ and tissue donors to exclude donation of tissues at risk for disease transmission. Standards dictate that serological tests be performed on every donor to assess the presence of transmissible diseases including: Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 & 2, Human T Lymphotropic Virus 1 & 2, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B surface Antigen, Hepatitis B core Antibody and Syphilis. A limitation of serological testing is the risk of false negative results due to the dilution of the serum. Hemodilution results from the transfusion of fluids (blood products, colloids and/or crystalloid). Confidence in the accuracy and sensitivity of donor serology testing is of utmost importance to ensure the provision of safe organs and tissues for transplantation.
Methods. In order to determine the preferred and validated methodology for determining hemodilution, if any; and to determine the level of hemodilution that jeopardizes serologic test results, we reviewed the literature and current testing practices. Tissue banks throughout Canada as well as accrediting bodies were contacted regarding the hemodilution algorithm they utilize.
Results. In the absence of a pretransfusion sample, hemodilution calculations are the prevalent methodology for assessing sensitivity of serology testing. A literature search and personal communications provided no documentation on the validation of any hemodilution algorithm or evidence that 50% hemodilution is an acceptable level for accurate serology testing.
Conclusion. A validation of hemodilution algorithms and the acceptable or unacceptable rate of hemodilution is required. The utilization of a validated algorithm should be mandated in standards to ensure continuity of practice by all transplantation centres. If validation cannot be obtained, alternative methodologies for serology testing should be investigated. 相似文献

Seasonal and diurnal variation and rehydration effects of pressure-volume parameters in Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco from a plantation in central Pennsylvania, USA, were evaluated during May-September, 1989. Predawn elastic modulus was lowest in overwintering and newly expanded shoots in May and June, respectively, whereas predawn osmotic potentials at full and zero turgor were lowest in May and in early September, following an August drought. Seasonal variation in predawn relative water content at zero turgor was highly correlated with increases and decreases in elastic modulus and osmotic potential. Diurnal osmotic adjustment resulted in nearly constant turgor pressure, despite decreases in bulk shoot water potential. Elastic modulus decreased diurnally on 1 August and increased on 3 September. Decreases in osmotic potential and/or elastic modulus on 24 June and 1 August lowered the relative water content at zero turgor. Plateaus in pressure-volume data caused by excess apoplastic water, were present in 67% of naturally rehydrated shoots and in all of the shoots artificially rehydrated for 3, 6, 12 and 24 h, and they increased in volume with rehydration time. Plateaus represented 80–95% of the excess apoplastic water lost during pressure-volume analysis. Correcting for plateaus via linear regression had no significant effect on osmotic potential at full turgor; however, uncorrected elastic modulus and relative water content at zero turgor were often significantly lower than the plateau-corrected values, particularly in artificially rehydrated shoots. Plateau-corrected osmotic potential at full turgor and osmotic potential at zero turgor were significantly higher in most artificially rehydrated shoots than in those naturally rehydrated as the result of loss of symplastic solutes. Corrected elastic modulus decreased following 12 and 24 h of rehydration and corrected relative water content at zero turgor increased in as little as 3 h of rehydration. These results indicate that seasonal and diurnal patterns of tissue-water parameters in Pseudotsuga menziesii vary with plant phenology and drought conditions, and that the length of rehydration period is an important consideration for pressure-volume studies. 相似文献
